A team of 12 Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Regency Park, South Australia, visited the hospital and the INF Nepal Gorkha GRACE Project on 30th of Falgun and 1st of Chaitra (14th & 15th March). The purpose of their visit was to observe INF’s hospital and community work. For some of the group it was their first visit to Nepal. The Rotary Club has been supporting INF for many years. Recent support from the Club has enabled us to purchase an anaesthetic machine, a portable x-ray machine and an autoclave. Tika Devi Baral (name changed for anonymity), a 59-year-old poor farm worker from Kaski district is also a leprosy affected patient, undergoing treatment in GPHRC.

When she was in her early 40s she started taking medication for diabetes prescribed by a physician. After two years she started having an unusual sensation in her leg and also developed a wound in her left foot. Three years ago she was diagnosed with leprosy and after having been diagnosed, surgery was conducted on her previously developed wound (foot). Although the doctors were reluctant to send her home immediately, she went home and did not carry out any self-care work which resulted

into worsening of her deformity including her both hands and eyes. She developed clawing of both hands and she was unable to carry out her daily chores. Instead of visiting the hospital, she started taking ayurvedic medicine which did not did not make any significant difference to her already deformed hands, eyes and insensate feet. The wounds on her feet had also worsened by this time. Now, having received reconstructive surgery on her left thumb and left eye, she has been under rehabilitation and continuous self-care in GP for the last 6 months. She needs further reconstructive surgery for her claw hand and right eye, which is planned for the near future but it also depends on her physical condition. She is slowly improving but recently she has been affected by a cataract. Despite the social stigma, she has been receiving the full support of her family to fight against the disease. Approximately 0.7 million rupees (including surgery and accommodation) is required for her treatment. Your generosity allows us to continue to provide the treatment and care for those who cannot afford it. Whatever you can give will make a difference.
