The SA Innovation Summit has grown into a premier event on the annual South African Innovation
calendar. Created to support and promote innovation and facilitate collaboration among multi-helix
actors, the SA Innovation Summit is a crucial tool to inspire sustained economic growth. The outcomes
achieved by the Summit, amplify and revive South Africa’s renowned competitive edge and it is a powerful
tool to bring together thought leaders and connect with peers. The theme for the 2016 Innovation
Summit was Accelerate. Innovate. Ignite! What this means is that we were looking beyond great ideas; we
were interested in how great ideas become innovations and how these innovations could be accelerated
to reach the market for social, environmental and/or financial impact. The Summit provided the tools,
knowledge, networking and funding opportunities, as well as hosted connectors such as competitions,
discussions and introductions necessary to help take innovations from idea to market.
Participation in the SA Innovation Summit meant rubbing shoulders with prominent Innovation
practitioners!

SUMMIT OVERALL STATISTICSThe SA Innovation Summit is a platform for nurturing, developing and showcasing South African
innovation. Annually, the Summit offers numerous opportunities for entrepreneurs, innovators, thought-
leaders, policymakers, inventors and investors to drive innovation in South Africa and inspire sustained
economic growth. The following section will provide an overview of the main activities and outcomes of
the 2016 SA Innovation Summit.
Figure 1: 2007-2016 statistics and participating countries.
Figure 1 shows how the SAIS grew from 78 attendees in 2007 to 4200 in 2015. In 2016, 3500 people
attended a variety of platforms within the SAIS. SAIS 2016 also attracted attendees from no less than
19 different countries and more than 50 international Delegates. Key international partners for the 2016
included Switzerland Business, Universities, start-up companies and various Finnish Universities. This is
a crucial number that illustrates the growth of our international potential for importing and exporting
innovations from and to South Africa. It positions the SA Innovation Summit as the landing place from
where to get to know the innovation landscape in South Africa.

Figure 2 provides a breakdown of the types of roles delegates play. A healthy balance between the private
sector, public sector and academia indicates a balanced approach in activities that support the SA
Innovation System and content that the Summit presents. The Summit reflects a solid representation of
investors, small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as media, large private sector and the
public sector. This shows the strength that lies within the SAIS to bring together a cross sector of society,
collaborating in the innovation space to impact the space.

Figure 4 depicts other themed accelerator platforms that took place at the Innovation Summit.
The Match and Invest platform aimed to accelerate, by connecting SA businesses and entrepreneurs
with funders, corporates, academia, new and foreign markets, and others. This was realised with 694
meeting scheduled and 78% of these, being actioned, during the course of two days. This platform was
very popular this year and delegates and partners alike, were impressed by it.
Ignite! - A new platform introduced at SAIS in 2016, showcased a celebration of the spirit of innovation
– with business leaders and innovative movers and shakers igniting the stage, along with entrepreneurs,
artists and entertainers. The focus was motivation and igniting the fire of innovation.
The thought leadership aspect of the Summit is always anticipated by delegates as it provides the learning
and benchmarking part of the Summit. This is the area where an array of speakers, South African and
international, come together to share their expertise in a multitude of industries.

THE MEDIA COVERAGE RECEIVED
Table 1: The media Value for the SA Innovation Summit for 2015 and 2016.
Figure 5 shows the meteoric rise of our media footprint
in 2016. The main reason being our partnership with
SABC Education, but another contributing factor is
our partners that collaborated with the SAIS in terms
of press releases and more.
Another interesting fact that came to light, was the
120 000 000 impressions of our website measured by
Google Analytics.

SUMMIT CONCLUDES WITH A CELEBRATION OF INNOVATION
IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2 November 2016After four days of igniting, innovating and accelerating opportunities to take our country and its innovators
to the next level; South Africa’s favourite innovation conference, the SABC Education SA Innovation
Summit 2016, concluded on Saturday, 24 September 2016. The Summit mesmerised delegates by hosting
various activities such as the Market on the Edge, the Inventor’s Garage, CEO panel discussions and
the Ventureburn Pitching Den at the Birchwood Hotel in Ekhuruleni from Thursday, 21 to Saturday, 24
September 2016.
“A key takeaway from the Summit is that there are a lot of opportunities in this country. All that we need
to do is keep innovating and tap into our networks, such as the ones provided by the Summit,” says
Audrey Verhaeghe, chairperson of the SABC Education SA Innovation Summit 2016.
One of the highlights of the conference was the Ventureburn Pitching Den. The pitching den provided
bright startups with an opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of judges. After two successful
days of presentations, delvv.io
was awarded the winning pitch at
the award ceremony. Delvv.io is a
platform that provides professional
feedback for creative concepts, in
order for businesses or individuals
to test the effectiveness of their
concept before launching it.

Trevor Wolfe, the brainchild behind delvv.io, will be representing South Africa at the Startup World Cup
2017, hosted by Fenox Venture Capital, in Silicon Valley, San Francisco on Friday, 24 March 2017. “In order
to be considered for the Startup World Cup, Pitching Den finalists were evaluated according to their
scalability, possible revenue, marketing strategy and expertise. Delvv.io fulfills all of these requirements,”
says Azola Lojitza, SABC Education SA Innovation Summit coordinator.
Delegates were also introduced to paradigm-shifting ideas, products and prototypes of the top 30 finalists
that participated in the Inventors Garage Competition. The overall winner of the Competition was the
hearScreen smart phone application (app), designed by Nic Klopper, who won R10 000 in prize money
to further his invention. The hearScreen app provides a mobile health solution for the early detection of
hearing loss.
An additional prize was awarded by Innovation Edge, a social innovation fund that assists underprivileged
children aged between three months and five years old. The organisation awarded R20 000 to Grade 11
student, Clarice Greyling, for compiling a box of educational materials that aims to teach young children
about maths, science, technology and engineering in a fun way; while adhering to the South African
school curriculum. The materials used are mostly made up of up-cycled rubbish and is accompanied by
a teacher’s manual.
“The youth was a definite focus point at the 2016 Summit,” says Verhaeghe. Educational activities that
took place at the Summit aimed to stimulate innovation from a young age and included fun events such
as: an interactive ‘MatheMagics’ show that teaches children about math in an exciting way; a Lego future
city development area where young and old got together to build their idea of a future aerotropolis (a
city developed around an airport); and a Lego robotics challenge to teach children critical thinking skills.
“Taking our future into account by concentrating on our youth led us to focus on green innovation as
well,” explains Verhaeghe. “Thought leaders addressed the importance of finding sustainable and
feasible environmentally-friendly solutions for business and the global society,” she continues. Chanru
Wadhwani, Joint Managing Director of Extrupet (the largest and most advanced recycler of polyethylene
terephthalate (PET) bottle materials on the African continent), highlighted the fact that innovation has
to be meaningful and sustainable. “Meaningful innovation is needed to ensure that solutions are scaled
to address the growing environmental issues and problems that we are faced with; most importantly, it
has to factor in efficiency,” says Wadhwani. “Luckily, events such as the SA Innovation Summit provide a
platform where critical issues, such as the need for innovative green solutions, can be brought up and
addressed,” he adds.
“This year was a very exciting year for us,” says Verhaeghe. “The 2016 Summit hosted very interesting
discussions touching on the future of innovation in South Africa and provided exciting new possibilities
to accelerate meaningful change. We look forward to a bigger and better Summit in 2017!” concludes
Verhaeghe.
