Karl Curtis, director of reserves and communityengagement, said: “Warwickshire Wildlife Trust isdeeply concerned that recent government proposalsindicate an intention to increase badger culling further.

“This is especially the case now Warwickshire isaffected by being part of a proposal of expanding cullzones.

“The trust will be responding to the government con-sultation on this. We also ask people to respond to theconsultations where it is appropriate to do so.

“We sincerely hope that these consultations and thebTB Review help us to reach an end to the cull infavour of strategic and wide-spread badger vaccina-tion schemes, and of investment in developing a cattlevaccine.

“In the meantime we will ensure that we keep aheadof any developments regarding a worrying roll out ofa cull in Warwickshire and will keep our membersupdated via our website and communications.”

Mr Curtis said the trust continued to support localvaccination through the Warwickshire Badger Groupby loaning equipment, and assist other trusts with theirvaccination efforts across Nottinghamshire by loaningtraps and equipment.

He added that if the cull is brought to Warwickshirethe trust will not permit the culling of badgers on anyland it owns and that it would continue to engage withland owners to promote the benefits of vaccination andother non-lethal control methods to reduce the spreadof bovine TB.

Badgers and their setts are protected by law and cur-rent government strategy, published in 2014, meansthat only ten new areas can be licenced for legal cullsevery year, but it is proposing to remove that limit.

The WWT said the strategy has resulted in over34,000 badgers being culled.

New cull zones are also proposed in Avon, Berk-shire, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Shrop-shire and Staffordshire.

New moves madeto cull badgers

WARWICKSHIRE Wildlife Trust (WWT)has said it will vigorously object to movesto cull badgers in the county.

An application for a cull licence has been sub-mitted to Natural England, although no details ofwhere the cull zone is being proposed or how thatwill be implemented have been published.

And the trust said there is no conclusive evidencethat culls have an impact on decreasing bovinetuberculosis (bTB) in cattle, and described them as‘ineffective, inhumane and expensive’.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust ‘deeply concerned’ at licence bid

ARCHIVE material from what wasone of the biggest names in themotor and aerospace industry hasbeen catalogued online for the firsttime.

Almost 3,000 items relating to the socialand industrial aspects of Birmingham-based Lucas Industries are now availableonline on the Discovery website, run byThe National Archives.

The digital project has been carried outby the British Motor Industry HeritageTrust (BMIHT), which is based at theBritish Motor Museum in Gaydon, andwas funded with £3,000 by the BusinessArchives Council.

The Lucas Collection was gifted to theBMIHT in 2002 and since then there havebeen additional acquisitions of subsidiaryrecords.

It contains extensive business and familyrecords, product development papers, cata-logues and manuals, company publica-tions, photographs, moving film, audio andartefacts.

There is also material about the familywhich founded it, their business practices, and what it was like to work for them.

In the 1850s, Joseph Lucas began sellingparaffin oil from a basket skip which hewheeled round the streets of Birminghamto support his family.

Twenty years later he was manufac-turing a range of items, most famously theTom Bowling ship lamp.

His eldest son, Harry, joined his father’senterprise and they began trading as JosephLucas and Son. Together they exploited thenewly-developing cycle industry, mar-keting a hub lamp for the ‘ordinary’ bicyclewhich they called King of the Road — aname which quickly became associated

with other Lucas products. The company grew with the transport

industry and Joseph Lucas Limited wasformed in 1897 before developing into themajor supplier of electrical equipmentknown as Lucas Industries.

Together with its notable subsidiaries,CAV, Girling and Rotax, it played a majorrole in the development of the motor car, commercial vehicle and aircraft industries.

Gillian Bardsley, BMIHT archivist, said:“Lucas Industries employed generations ofpeople in the Birmingham area, and theLucas Collection is one of our archive’shidden treasures.

“Now, thanks to this grant, we can openup this precious resource to everyone withan interest in this enterprising family andthe company they created, which so manyremember with great affection.”

Lucas merged with a number of compa-nies in modern times, and the trademark iscurrently owned by German company, ZFFriedrichshafen.

FASTER broadband connections will be installed at publicbuildings thanks to a £5.5million government windfall.

The CSW Broadband Project, which is bringing fasterbroadband to parts of Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshirewhere there are no commercial plans for upgrades, hasbanked the money from the Local Full Fibre NetworksChallenge Fund.

The bid will invest in 1Gbps-capable full fibre networksin the most expensive and hard-to-reach public buildingsacross the project area, such as rural schools, fire stationsand libraries.

The project will go out to tender for a contractor to carryout the public sector building connectivity upgrades, andthat the successful bidder will, at their own cost, upgradeconnections to residential and business properties along thefibre route.

Thirteen areas across the UK will share £95million fromthe first wave of funding from the Government’s £190mil-lion Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN), the Chancellor hasannounced in Tuesday’s Spring Statement.

The Gigabit Voucher Scheme, which allows small or

medium business to apply for grants of up to £3,000 toupgrade their broadband, and piloted in Coventry and War-wickshire, will also now continue as a national scheme.

Cllr Kam Kaur, portfolio holder for customer and trans-formation for CSW Broadband’s lead partner, Warwick-shire County Council, said: “This is a real opportunity toimprove connectivity at some of the hardest-to-reachschools and other public buildings.

“The ultrafast, gigabit-capable, network will be a realstep-change beyond the existing infrastructure and willbring exciting education, business and other opportunitiesto those who are able to connect to the new network.

“It is early days, and we do not yet have the detail of whathas been awarded, but the CSW Broadband team hopes tobe in a position to scope the work and to start the procure-ment process over the next few months.”

CSW Broadband is made up of Coventry City Council,Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and WarwickshireCounty Council, in partnership with British Telecom, theCoventry and Warwickshire LEP, the UK government andthe European Union.

ROUND-TABLE talks havebeen held following a sharpincrease in the number of roughsleepers in south Warwickshire.

A summit, organised by Warwickand Leamington MP Matt Western, was attended by 20 support organisa-tions, including national charitiesShelter and Crisis, as well as repre-sentatives from Warwick DistrictCouncil and Warwickshire CountyCounty.

They discussed finding practicalsolutions for those suffering fromhomelessness, with ideas put forwardincluding the need for housing-firstpolicies, innovative addiction treat-ments and the use of modularhousing.

Also raised was a sharp decline infunding available.

Mr Western said: “I was pleased toorganise and chair the housing andhomelessness summit, whichbrought together many organisationsworking hard on the issue of home-lessness in our local area.

“Representatives from nationalhomelessness organisations such asCrisis and Shelter travelled all theway from London and other parts ofthe country specifically to attend themeeting. I am delighted that War-wick District Council and Warwick-shire County Council supported theinitiative so we are not working inisolation.

“It is important to work together toaddress the causes and symptoms ofhomelessness by providing bespokeand holistic treatment services, aswell as fulfilling our duty to providesocial, council and affordablehousing.

“I welcome the new funding beingmade available by WarwickshireCounty Council and it is an impor-tant step that must be maintained infuture.

“Many organisations spoke of the

impact of budget cuts on the servicesthey provided, and delivered starkreminders of how rough sleeping hasincreased by 169 per cent since 2010.

“This demonstrates how vital it iswe take concrete and positive actionnow, and I look forward to workingwith homelessness charities andlocal authorities in future to endhomelessness and rough sleeping.”

The county council recently setaside £300,000 in its budget to tacklehomelessness, while Warwick Dis-trict Council has agreed to take on akey role in establishing night sheltersin Leamington and Warwick.

The Stratford District Council-runLink Project is seeking charitablestatus to open up access to morefunding to extend its services.

Cllr Peter Phillips, portfolio holderfor housing and property services atWarwick District Council, added:“There is an urgent need to tacklethe rising problem of homelessness

and rough sleeping in our districtand to be able to offer practical sup-port to the voluntary sector in theamazing job they do in helping themost vulnerable people in our com-munity.

“I very much hope that theannouncement of our plans to securea permanent home for the LWSNight Shelter and the purchase of aformer hostel in Warwick to providesupported accommodation for thehomeless will be a first step.”

IN BRIEF

Residentsin fuelpovertyMORE action must betaken to help the 28,774households in Warwick-shire experiencing fuelpoverty to help preventfurther unnecessarydeaths from living incold homes.

It is estimated that12.2 per cent of homesare ‘fuel poor’, meaningthey cannot afford tokeep warm at a reason-able cost given theirincome.

Households in ruralparts of the countyexperience on average a£700 gap between theirenergy bills and whatthey can realisticallyafford, more thandouble that of urbanareas.

Malcolm Farrow, ofOFTEC, which repre-sents the oil heatingindustry, said: “It isshocking that in 2018fuel poverty continuesto be such a majorproblem and a source ofgreat distress for somany. The cold weatherrecently has made thelast few weeks particu-larly difficult, especiallyin rural parts of War-wickshire where housestend to be less well insu-lated against the cold.”

The government pub-lishes annual fuelpoverty statistics.

TWO people werearrested on suspicion ofdrugs offences followingan operation by policein Stratford.

During the operationofficers used the latesttechnology, sending upa drone to help gatherintelligence.

The arrests on 7thMarch come as part ofthe police’s efforts tocombat county linesdrugs trafficking, wheredrug distribution net-works from largertowns and citiesattempt to establishmarkets in smallercounty towns.

PLANS for 250 homes near Warwickhave been rejected for a second time.

William Davies Ltd and Hallam LandManagement wants to built on a trian-gular parcel of land that is flanked byGallows Hill and Banbury Road.

But they have been sent back to thedrawing board again by Warwick DistrictCouncil’s planning committee.

Committee members said they werestill not satisfied that the houses — tenfewer than in the initial application lastyear — would not have a harmful effecton the historic landscape and adjacentheritage assets.

The site is within sight of WarwickCastle and its historic parkland, whichcelebrates its 950th anniversary this year.

One of the main objections wasoverdevelopment of the area, with landnorth of Gallows Hill already havingplanning permission for 425 homes, amedical centre, community hall, formaland informal green spaces, and sportsand recreation provision.

Both sites are in the council’s recently-adopted local plan, but for 630 homes —

fewer than the combined number.Another developer has permission for1,200 homes on neighbouring land.

Meanwhile, the Campaign for the Pro-tection of Rural England has dropped itsthreat of a legal challenge to the district’slocal plan.

The influential organisation said itoverestimates housing requirements, that

there was no adequate assessment ofalternative sites for the 5,000 homes thatwould be built on green belt land, andthat the ‘exceptional circumstances’ tojustify substantial loss of further greenbelt to develop an employment site.

It had previously also branded thepublic consultation on modifications tothe plan as ‘inadequate’.

Adams is remaining calmdespite Poppies thrashingSTRATFORD Townmanager Carl Adamswas in upbeat mooddespite a 4-0 thrashingagainst Kettering Townon Saturday.

Town were looking tobuild on a run of three winsin their last four, but theywere a comfortable secondbest on a bitterly cold after-noon at the MoodChimpStadium.

Brett Solkhon put thePoppies ahead from thespot in the 13th minute andthe visitors sealed victorywith second-half goalsfrom Michael Richens,Mathew Stevens and AaronO’Connor.

“I honestly don’t thinkwe played that badly,” saidAdams.

“I can’t really rememberthem, as daft as it sounds, carving us open.

“As stupid as it sounds,we’ve been hammered 4-0,but I don’t feel as if we’vebeen hammered for 90 min-utes.

“The killer was the

penalty. Once they scoredthat, we were rushing every-thing, we were anxious, wewere shooting from 40 or 50yards, it was ridiculous. It’sbeen a bad day at the office,as they say.

“We just have to say theyare a better team than us.When you can bring aplayer like Rene Howe offthe bench, a player who ison one of the highest wagesin the league.”

Town are back at theMoodChimp Stadiumtonight, Tuesday, when theytake on Tiverton Town.

“We’ve now got toregroup and go again onTuesday,” Adams added.

“If we can bounce back, then suddenly we’ve wonfour out of six games and itputs a different spin on itagain.”

FC STRATFORDboosted their hopes of pro-motion from MidlandLeague Division Three witha 2-0 victory over localrivals Shipston Excelsior atLondon Road. More in thisweek’s Stratford Herald.
