May 2011

The 20th Century was a time of great change in the world. People

who were born around 1900 probably could not have begun to predict

what life would be like by the time the century came to a close. What

causes change in society? Any 5th grader can answer that question

for you….change agents. People can be certainly be change agents, but

conflicts or events can be too. Change agents can come in the form

of cooperations, or even strong beliefs. Inventions are some of the

first change agents that people think about because they often change

the way we do something or what we can do.

Saigon South International School’s 5th grade class of 2011 took

some time to find out a lot more about the change agents of the 20th

Century. We each chose a change agent from the 20th Century that

caught our interest. We asked questions about it, researched, and

found out answers. We took time to teach our classmates all that we

knew about our change agents. Then, we used our powerful writing

skills to write feature articles about our change agents.

We would like to share them with you.

As you read, join us in learning about the agents of change from

the 20th Century that have made our lives much different than those

of our ancestors.

The Country Changer by Nayli Khairi

Starting the Conversation Let’s talk about something you haven’t really talked about yet: Prime ministers. Prime ministers are like Presidents. Who was a prime minister before? Do you think anybody could be a good prime minister? Let’s keep talking… Have you heard of a man named Tunku Abdul Rahman? Tunku Abdul Rahman was the first prime minister of Malaysia. And this article will talk all about this man and what he did.

What is a Change Agent?

A change agent is a person, place, thing, or events that changed the way people live, work, and do things. For example: Tunku Abdul Rahman was a change agent because he made Malaysia into an independent country, and changed how Malaysia is a bigger country.

What did he do to become a Change Agent?

Tunku Abdul Rahman, in 1963, made Malaysia a bigger country. He did this by making an announcement about bringing together the states of Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore, and Brunei. Tunku Abdul Rahman got all the states in Malaysia except for Brunei. That is why Tunku Abdul Rahman changed how Malaysia became a bigger country, now as big as Vietnam.

So what happened to Singapore?

What DID happen to Singapore? Well, in 1965, Tunku Abdul Rahman made an announcement to vote “yes” to take Singapore away from Malaysia to make Singapore one independent country.

Before Becoming a Prime Minister…

Tunku Abdul Rahman had to do a lot of things, right? So we are going back to see what he did BEFORE becoming prime minister: Tunku Abdul Rahman studies law and history and passed a lot of exams in his school, which allowed Tunku Abdul Rahman to study at Cambridge University in England. He stayed there for 12 years. After graduating, Tunku Abdul Rahman went back to Kedah, and became a district officer. A district officer is alike a boss or officer of that place, and keeps track of this district or town. For example, if somebody wanted to buy a piece of land in the district, the district officer will have to know about that and plan it out. It’s kind of like being a guard of that place. Tunku Abdul Rahman was a district

officer of Petani Lake, in Kedah, and that’s the second most important district, and made Tunku Abdul Rahman quite famous.

1945 was quite a big year…

Yes. In 1945, the war ended. And that was also when Tunku Abdul Rahman co-found, or helped find, the United Malays National Organization. (UMNO) The UMNO is a group or people who work in the political party that has to do with the government. The UMNO has many important people, like Prime Ministers, of bosses. Tunku Abdul Rahman was voted as chairman of UMNO, but later, because Tunku Abdul Rahman helped find UMNO, he became president of UMNO, and when you are president of UMNO, it is most likely you will be prime minister of Malaysia. And that did happen to Tunku Abdul Rahman.

1957 was also quite a big year…

In1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman won the Britain Independence. That was big for Malaysia because before Britain used to rule Malaysia. That also was when Tunku Abdul Rahman became the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. And that was also on Malaysia’s Independence Day, called Merdeka.

Closing the Conversation

Now you know who Tunku Abdul Rahman is, and why he was a change agent, and what a prime minister is. Tunku Abdul Rahman was a country changer. And maybe you can also be a president yourself; you could try changing your country. Now what about YOUR countries’ presidents or prime ministers? What have they done for your country?

Tunku Abdul Rahman helped find UMNO in 1945. It is a group of people who work together about the government and it is still going on today.

In 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman won the Britain Independence. The country flag has 14 stripes, which represents the 14 states in Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak. The points in the star also have 14 points.

Tunku Abdul Rahman, first prime minister of Malaysia, during their National or Independence Day, is called Merdeka, and it is held every year in August 31st.

Do You Like To Use Internet? by Jim Lin

Do you use Internet every day? Is it useful? Do you like to use it? Did you think that it should be invented I think it should. Did you ever think that internet was a change agent I think it is but first you need to know what can it do.

What does the Internet do?

Internet could let you find the information you want faster. It could let you look at news online and watch movies so you don’t need a TV to watch movies. You can also play online games download songs. Internet is a web browser that let people do lots of stuff. Also it was made in 1960.

Life Before Internet Was Invented

It was hard to find the information you want, you can’t look at news unless you have a TV or news paper but it needs money. If it’s internet you only need pay a little money for it or you need to be at the time it happen so it’s not so good. You also can’t chat to people that live far away.

Life After Internet Was Invented

When internet was invented you can find lots of information you want. You could look at news all the news all over the world. You could also chat to all of your family members or your friend that live far away.

Why is the internet a change agent?

I think it is a change agent because it could let you buy stuff without going. You could find lots of information all over the world. Also you could download songs, games and play online games. You could look at news without a TV or a piece of paper. You could chat to people that live far away if you really miss them. Also you could watch movies and there is lots of website but I always use YouTube.

Now I think you know what is internet and if you never tried it, you should like it because it will make life easier. Also you don’t need to buy any video games, you just need to have internet.

The Math Mind by Mendy Nguyen

Have you ever heard of the ANITA Mk 8? It’s pretty unpopular now but in the 20th

century it was very popular. Let me show you how the story begins…

First electric calculator

The ANITA Mk 8 was the World’s first electronic calculator. It was made around late 1960 in Britain. It was constructed by the Bell Punch Company.

Calculators for sale!

The ANITA was mainly sold in Germany, Holland, and Belgium. The price for the ANITA was £355 Sterling, or $1,000 USD. The reason why it was expensive is because it could do multiplication and division problems automatically.

Revealing the initial The “ANITA” stands for A New Inspiration to Arithmetic. The name ANITA is now the family name for almost all the electronic models built by the Bell Punch Company.

Popularity

Thousands of calculators were sold in only 2 years! It was popular because it helped the people do their work faster and easier.10000 calculators were shipped to England to be sold.

The negatives

These ANITA calculators had some negatives. One of the reasons was that the ANITA was too big. The calculator was as big as a cash register, and couldn’t be carried around. The second reason was that the ANITA is too heavy. It weighs about 30 pound also known as 13.9 kg. And finally it’s slow… compared the calculator today. But obviously it was faster compared to the mechanical one.

So you see that ANITA calculator is good for doing calculations, but don’t use it on your math test…unless your teacher says you can.

This photo is a photo of the Bell Punch Company.

This is the ANITA 1000.

This is the ANITA Mk 8.
