“I really hope they willbe inspired to experiencethe expanded Tunnel vande Liefde when it bulgesup from the Currumbinsand at the southerlySwell,” he said.

Mr Cuvillier will build a40m sculpture in front ofthe Elephant Rock Cafe andwill continue the theme of

Tunnel van de Liefde. Theartist said he built the art-work in the Helensvale Li-brary atrium over sevendays and the name Tunnelvan de Liefde meant Tunnelof Love.

He said the sculpturesymbolised the link betweenboth ends of the Gold Coast

and it echoed the way peo-ple connected with eachother, as well as the placesand spaces they inhabited.

“Tunnel van de Liefde alsohints at the ever-changing,mercurial nature of our livesand loves,” he said. “We canbuild bamboo structuresthat have never been seenbefore and then they disap-pear. Only the curve in yourmemory will remain.”

The bamboo artwork willbe on display at the Helens-vale Library until the end ofthe Swell Sculpture Festival, which will run from Sep-tember 12-21.

Swell has been held onthe southern end of theGold Coast for more than adecade and it features aunique coming together ofculture, art, community andcoastal life.

KERRY Stokes’ Seven Network has shelled out about $40 million for the exclusive media rights to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

The deal continues Seven’ssport rights spree following its

$170 million acquisition of three Olympics from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Seven chief executive TimWorner said there was “nothing like a home Games to get Australians excited”.

Under the deal, which includes all digital rights,

Seven will pay about $10 million more than the $30 million Network Ten paid for the recent Glasgow Games.

Nine paid about $50 millionfor the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Mr Worner, a former Sevenprogramming chief, said he

remembered the drawing power of the Melbourne Games.

“We (Seven) had three ofthe top shows on television at the time in Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Lost, but Australians tuned in to watch the Melbourne Games,’’ he said.

New routes set to boost tour figures

ANIKA HUME

DOMESTIC visitor numbersare thriving but fewer travel-lers are passing through CairnsAirport’s international ter-minal, a report has found.

But business leaders saythere’s potentially new routeson the way set to change thefigures, outlined in HerronTodd White’s latest CairnsWatch paper, as internationalterminal passenger volumescontinue to decline.

The report showed airportpassenger volumes slipped atthe domestic terminal in Junebut this was attributed in partto a later than usual start tomidyear holidays, and num-bers have maintained reason-able trends since.

There was also a 1.5 per centtrend increase in numberspassing through the terminalin the year leading to June.

But international terminalpassenger volumes were lowduring June, and remain so.

The dip in international ter-minal numbers has alsodragged down the total num-ber of Cairns Airport passen-gers for the latest year.

While domestic passengermovements in 2013-14 as awhole were up a healthy 5.7per cent on 2012-13, an 8.9 per

cent drop in international trav-ellers over the same period lev-elled out the airport’s totalnumbers rise to 3.8 per cent, or130,000 passengers.

Tourism Tropical NorthQueensland chief executive

Alex de Waal said internation-al terminal numbers were im-pacted by the fact CairnsAirport was “structurally notwell aligned to aviation strat-egy at the moment”, which hesaid was focused on usingmajor population bases in Aus-tralia as hubs and transportinginternational passengers dom-estically from these centres, working to Cairns’ detriment.

“But we’re starting to attractattention from the Asian mar-kets, where we’ll see withoutdoubt in the near future an in-crease in direct internationalservices into Cairns,” he said.

Cairns Airport CEO KevinBrown said the increase in pas-sengers through the domesticterminal also included interna-tional visitors who were com-ing to the city and the GreatBarrier Reef region via dom-estic services.

“As well as this we are see-ing an upward trend in thenumber of passengers on theinternational jet serviceswhich did operate in both 2013

and 2014,” Mr Brown said.“Both of these factors re-

inforce our case for more

direct international servicesinto Cairns Airport.

“We are looking forward toa strong Chinese New Yearseason and also have someexcellent leads with regards tonew routes that will add to ourinternational connectivity.”

Both men applauded therise in domestic terminal pass-enger numbers as a positivefor the region, with Mr deWaal citing the impact adepreciated Australian dollarhas had on domestic travelaffordability as reason for theboost in numbers.

“The domestic market rep-resents about 60-70 per cent ofour visitation, making it a sig-nificant part of business thatwe’re very pleased to see in-crease,” Mr de Waal said.

He said it was also import-ant to note that Cairns wasshifting towards attractingmore visitors from high socio-economic target segments.

“A total 42 per cent of ourvisitation is now in the$100,000-$250,000 plus in-come bracket, so we’re attract-ing very high-yieldingvisitors,” he said.

Airport desperately needs an upgradeTHE news item which appeared in the Tweed Sun (31/7), “Plan for airport business hub” is an interesting article and not only for those implied economic and employment opportunities within the precincts of the Gold Coast Airport.

Reference to the airport’splanned expansion warrants some special attention.

This point was short on detail but hopefully any future expansion of this important travel facility will include the long-awaited installation of passenger aerobridges as a major priority.

It is a pitiful situation thatpassengers using Australia’s sixth-busiest airport have to contend with unsheltered walks and steep steps to and from domestic and international aircraft. If for no other reason the heavily-

promoted Gold Coast’s hosting of the 2018 Commonwealth Games should be sufficient inducement to rectify these archaic commuter amenities.

Understandably, Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) as the private operators of this airport together with three other regional airports in Queensland will most likely require a lot of persuasion to accept this financial obligation but as a major long term beneficiary from local government strategic planning of the airport precincts it will largely depend on what influence the local authorities can bring to bear on QAL as to how they respond. Hopefully it will be a win-win result for both the airport’s owners and the travelling public!

Centre’s upgrade‘a start’ JOSHALSTON

[email protected]

TOWNSVILLE’S dilapidatedEntertainment and Conven-tion Centre will receive a $1.8million facelift from theQueensland Government so itmeets minimum standards tohost Commonwealth Gamesbasketball matches in 2018.

But while Mayor Jenny Hillwelcomed the investment, shesaid council would continue topursue funding to build a newintegrated super stadium andconvention centre in the city.

Pool matches of thewomen’s basketball will beplayed at the existing enter-tainment centre as part of theGold Coast CommonwealthGames and upgrades are re-quired to bring it up to aninternational standard.

Improvements will includeupgrading the court, additionallighting, new furniture, secur-ity fencing, temporary offices, media hub and screen facilities.

Queensland Minister forTourism, Major Events, SmallBusiness and CommonwealthGames Jann Stuckey yester-day said the State Government

would fund the upgrades.“We have to adhere to

certain protocols and stan-dards,” Ms Stuckey said.

“An overlay is what isrequired for this specific sport, that is what Townsville will begetting.”

The upgrade comes on topof $5 million in funding givento Townsville City Council bythe Federal Government forthe Townsville Entertainmentand Convention Centre Refur-bishment Project.

Cr Hill said the double dose

of funding would allow councilto fix the facility in the shortterm but said the super stadi-um remained the ultimategoal.

“This is really just catchingup to keep the EntertainmentCentre running,” she said.

“We welcome the fundingbut it only keeps what we havegoing in the interim.

“In reality, we will still bepursuing an integrated com-plex that will meet the futureneeds of our city in the CBD.”

Ms Stuckey would not ruleout the future development ofa combined super stadium andconvention centre in Towns-ville despite the upgrades tothe existing facility.

“Every region needs to de-velop their long-term plans

and strategies,” she said.“We have actually asked

people (in the DestinationTourism plans) to think ambi-tiously and to think big.

“By everybody putting theirwish list … in together meansthat across Government, we’reable to look at how we’re ableto do that the best.”

Townsville Crocodiles gen-eral manager Errol McMillansaid the upgrades to the Crocs’former home was “positive”and he was optimistic the NBLclub could return to an upgra-ded “Swamp” in the future.

THINK BIG: Jann Stuckey.

LOCALSPUZZLEDBusinessman Michael Pulford on a CentralChamber of Commerce website:“It has been hugelydisappointing to see their (Games) money spentoutside the Gold Coast and for nearly four years I have been trying to get inthe door and keep hitting dead ends. They havebeen falling back on pre-existing QueenslandGovernment tenders or Local Buy tenders, bothof which favour Brisbanesuppliers or bigger national suppliers.”

Climate WaveEnterprises sustainable event manager Greg Howe, responding online:“Hi Michael, yes we must keep the pressure upbecause we know whatwill happen, it happens at every large-scale project/event — localslose out.”

Southport MP RobMolhoek in a letter to Games Minister JannStuckey:“Minister, I am happy to endorse Michael and his company and it doesconcern me that an established Gold Coastcompany has been so willingly overlooked.”

Minister Stuckey’sletter of reply:“The Gold Coast 2018preparations are in theearly stages … all agenciesare required to abide bythe Government’sprocurement policy andalso the local industrypolicy which utilises procurement and other

strategies to givecompetitive local businesses full, fair andreasonable opportunity to secure work related toGC2018.”

Mayor Tom Tate in anemail to Mr Pulford:“Your frustration inrelation to yourunsuccessful tender and procurement for theCommonwealth Games isclearly understandable. Ihave previouslyadvocated to GOLDOC and the Queensland Government to adopt thecity’s procurement policyfor GC2018, whichprovides greater local industry weighting to thescoring of tenders. While the procurement framework adopted bythe Government forGC2018 does provide weighting for localindustry, theirinterpretation of “local” differs. The difference means that suppliers insoutheast Queensland are entitled to some “local supplier” weighting in the evaluation of their tender.”

Seven will pay $40m for GamesJOHN LEHMANN

KERRY Stokes’ Seven Net-work has shelled out about $40million for the exclusive mediarights to the Gold Coast Com-monwealth Games in 2018.

The deal continues Seven’ssport rights spree following its$170 million acquisition ofthree Olympics from the 2016Rio de Janeiro Games.

Seven chief executive TimWorner said there was “noth-ing like a home Games to getAustralians excited”.

Under the deal, which in-cludes all digital rights, Sevenwill pay about $10 million morethan the $30 million NetworkTen paid for the recent Glas-gow Games.

Nine paid about $50 millionfor the Melbourne Common-wealth Games in 2006.

Mr Worner, a former Sevenprogramming chief, said he re-membered the drawing powerof the Melbourne Games.

“We (Seven) had three ofthe top shows on television atthe time in Grey’s Anatomy,Desperate Housewives andLost, but Australians tuned into watch the MelbourneGames,’’ he said.

Big-spending Seven senses ratings gold after victory in race for Games DARREN DAVIDSON

THE Commonwealth Games arereturning to Kerry Stokes’ top-rated Seven Network after recentflings with Ten and Nine in timefor a hometown celebration heldon the Gold Coast.

The 2018 Commonwealth

Games will be broadcast on Sevenafter the network signed a dealwith the Commonwealth GamesFederation. They were last broad-cast on Seven in 2002, when theGames took place in Manchester,England.

The coup continues Seven’saggressive push into sports broad-cast rights after the network paidan estimated $170 million for a

long-term partnership with theOlympics, beginning with Rio in2016.

It’s understood the Gold Coastdeal is worth more than the $30mTen forked out for the recentCommonwealth Games in Scot-land’s largest city, Glasgow, which

delivered bumper ratings for thenetwork earlier this month despitean unfavourable time zone.

Executives at Seven are confi-dent the Gold Coast deal repre-sents great value because thenetwork has paid less than the$50m paid by Nine for Melbourne2006, and includes all mediarights.

Chief executive of Seven WestMedia Tim Worner said home-soil sports events guaranteed bigratings, and pointed to the bumper

audiences pulled in by Sydney2000 and Melbourne 2006.

“Australians love watchingAustralians win and nothing rateslike a Games on home soil,” MrWorner told The Australian.

“It’s great for regional Queens-land where we have a big tele-vision business.”

Mr Worner said Glasgow hadput the quadrennial event back on

the map after an uninspired Delhi2010, which became a ratings flop.

“I thought Glasgow was greatfor the Commonwealth Games asa brand,” he said.

“It really revived it and took themovement to a level where itneeds to be, and I think the GoldCoast will build on that again.”

The media rights include allfree-to-air and subscription tele-

vision rights, online, mobile, socialmedia and radio.

Seven is planning to extend themain broadcast beyond the pri-mary channel to its two digitalmultichannels, and soon-to-be-launched broadband-poweredtelevision platform HbbTV.

The event is expected to create30,000 jobs and deliver $2 billionworth of economic activity.

Chance to forge next golden memories

LIKE most of us, I tunedinto the Commonwealth

Games watching with pride as our young athletes gave their all to win honour for our nation.

Knowing that some either came from or trained on the Gold Coast was especially rewarding,

I felt a connection, like part of a family.

There was also much tobe learned from the

excellent branding and marketing of host city Glasgow.

As much as the Games were about the triumphand sacrifice of our competitors, it was also about Glasgow and its people who welcomed and nurtured them.

Glasgow was on the world stage and it gave an Oscar performance.

Our Games are just under four years away. The Gold Coast will be in the spotlight. It is our opportunity to shine and

imprint our branding on a global scale.

The athletes and the venues are very much a part of it, but so is our city, the people who form its bonds and make up its character.

Our city has so much tooffer. Showing the rest of the world who and what we are before, during and after the Games should become second nature.

It is the memory that ourvisitors take home with them that can draw them back. Others will watch us in the comfort of their

homes. They, too, can be encouraged to visit.

It is time for unity, to putany differences aside, to put the cost in perspective, see it as an investment and work towards making our Games a welcoming and memorable occasion.

Four years is a short timeto show the rest of the world that the Gold Coast and its people ranks with the best of cities and is a worthwhile contender on the bucket list.Bob Janssen is president ofthe Gold Coast & Hinterland Business Alliance

Public pollbacks AquisAT last there is quantifiable evidence that

shows widespread support for the Aquismega-resort proposal at Yorkeys Knob.

Since the project was first announced morethan a year ago, the debate has been hijacked by the city leaders who have almost claimed the idea as their own and the opposition community group that is concerned about the impact of a resort-casino development of this scale.

The ReachTEL survey released to The CairnsPost shows what the average Joe or Jill thinks; tand it seems the Fung family have their support.

The survey is no half-baked attempt at gauging public opinion by asking loaded questions. It reached more than 1200 people – a credible sample for a city such as Cairns – and it was concise and direct.

The responses indicate how important the future of the economy is to the city’s residents. There is no doubt an $8.15 billion development will impact the environment and there are valid concerns about social issues such as skyrocketing housing and rental prices and an increase in problems associated with gambling.

In the pursuit of economic progress, these, itseems, are accepted risks; just ask the business owners and workers who endured the horrid years in Cairns during the global financial crisis. In their eyes the benefits – increased tourism and more jobs – will outweighs the negatives,

It’s not to say that the concerns raised by groups such as Aquis Aware should simply be dismissed. Rather issues, such as the ability of Cairns’ infrastructure to handle rapid population growth and the expected rise in problem gambling, should be heeded in each step of the application and, if the project does improve, there should be plans in place to address them.

But mere concerns are no reason to block a large development, nor is fear of progress, particularly when a development has the potential to return Cairns to its glory days.

Airnorth flies in to fill FIFO service gap

ALISTAIR BONE

AIRNORTH has made its firstDarwin-Gove-Cairns run, theday after Qantas scrubbed theroute.

The national carrier pulledout after Rio Tinto announcedGove alumina refinery, on theWestern side of the Gulf ofCarpentaria, had become unvi-able and would close, puttingmore than a thousand peopleout of work in the region, many of them FIFO workers.

Airnorth will operate anEmbraer E170 once a day

seven days a week on thethree-hour trip to Darwin.

The aircraft features a 76-seat capacity compared withthe 125 available on Qantas’Boeing 717s.

Passengers booked throughQantas will travel on a code-share arrangement.

Simone Saunders, Air-north’s CFO and general man-ager commercial was on thefirst flight into Cairns on Mon-day morning.

She said even when theGove shutdown is completethe route would still make

money. “We believe Gove is vi-

able, even without the re-finery,” she said. “We’reconfident this service will beongoing.”

She said the aircraft was fullout of Darwin and broughtsome 40 people to Cairns. Itsafternoon flight from Cairnsback to Darwin was fullybooked.

Janice Antonson, GM ofaeronautical development andmarketing for Cairns Airportowner North Queensland Air-ports, believed the route wouldnot just cater for workers, but

for a good number of businessand leisure travellers.

She said Cairns was grow-ing as a FIFO destination, witha 10 per cent rise in the catego-ry last year, even as other des-tinations were shrinking.

She put this down to super-ior lifestyle conditions locally.

Mrs Antonson said the nextprize to chase would be an Air-north link between Cairns andMackay, with Cairns Interna-tional becoming the point ofdeparture for Mackay travel-lers looking to make overseasconnections instead of Bris-

bane. She said the airport wasworking hard to get a direct

link to Singapore, with the E-gate self-service passport facil-ity already set up to handleSingaporean passports.

China Eastern Airlines willalso resume three times a weekdirect flights Shanghai-Cairnsfrom December 6.

Mrs Antonson said the air-line planned to operate the ser-vice through to Chinese NewYear in mid-February andwould decide whether it wouldcontinue after that based ondemand.

Plain need for direct overseas flights

THERE is no doubt that aviationis the lifeblood of the Far North’stourism and other industries.

Air travel shrinks the vastdistances between Cairns andthe southern cities and ensuresour connectivity to our tourismmarkets northwards, most par-ticularly China.

The arrival of another airline,Airnorth, to provide services toDarwin opens up more optionsfor travellers.

While international numbershave taken a hit at Cairns Airport

we are still attracting overseastourists who are determined to

get here via domestic services. But it is clear they would pre-

fer direct flights, particularlyfrom China and Singapore.

While China Eastern Airlineswill resume their three times aweek direct flights from Shanghaiin December and China South-ern are expected to operate char-

ters for the Chinese New Year, there is a need for direct sched-uled services as the Aquis mega-resort is looking more promising.

Aquis developer Tony Fungsays Cairns needs to becomea one-stop destination to attractthe one million visitors a year re-quired to make the project viable.

Senior airport executives areworking feverishly behind thescenes to shore up non-stop ser-

vices from the Chinese mainland. They are also moving closer to

securing connections to Singa-

pore with other routes on thewish list including Taiwan, Koreaand Bali.

Japan remains an importantlink with Jetstar adding the 787Dreamliner to its Tokyo route, providing more seats and in-creased fuel efficiency.

Passenger numbers are hold-ing up at the airport but what isreally needed are some more di-rect overseas flights to make iteasier and quicker for touristswho want to visit the region andspend more time and money.

Qantas Airways still loyalto frequent-flyer divisionWith a week to go before the QantasAirways' board meets ahead of itsresults announcement, there aregrowing doubts over whether directorswill approve a partial float of theairline's $2.5 billion loyalty division.

A final decision won't be made untilnext week. But those reading the tealeaves diinkit is more likely Qantas willdecide to keep all of the business ratherthan following the footsteps of QBEInsurance, which on Tuesday unveiledplans for a partial float of its mortgageinsurance business next year.

The fate of Qantas Loyalty has beenunder review for nine months, withMacquarie Capital and Citi providingadvice to the airline. The possibility ofselling a minority stake to a buyer suchas a private equity group is said to havebeen ruled out, with an initial publicoffering the only remaining optionunder consideration.

Market watchers with a keen eye on

the share register believe the likelihoodof a sale may have fallen in recentmonths due to the positioning of someof the airline's shareholders.

BT Investment Management andColonial First State, which have beenopen to a floatto help improve theairline's share price, have both reducedtheir stakes. Those share sales haveshored up Balanced EquityManagements position as the airline'slargest and most influentialshareholder. Balanced's AndrewSisson controls 9.4 per cent of theshares, and in concert with the rest ofthe Franklin Resources global network, the figure rises to 17.48 per cent

Sisson had long been opposed to thesale of a stake in the division, althoughearlier this year he said he was open-minded about the prospect dependingon the details and justification. Butthere are doubts in the market if anyreasoning or details put forward by

Qantas could satisfy his concerns aboutwhether it would prove value-adding inthe long term. The sale of a minoritystake would reduce Qantas's moststable earnings stream, which is also itslargest at the moment

Qantas chief executive Alan Joycehad ruled out the sale of a stake in thedivision, until just before the airline'sinvestment grade credit rating was lostin December. The majority of analyststhink it would be a poor long-termchoice even if it would provide a short-term boost to the share price.

They would prefer Qantas sell dieleases on its airport terminals inMelbourne and Sydney, after havingreached a deal with Brisbane Airport inFebruary. The airline is believed to beholding advanced talks withMelbourne Airport and SydneyAirport, but no agreement is expectedto be announced alongside Qantas'sfull-year results on August 28.

Seven grabs Comm GamesJake Mitchell

Seven West Media has bought thebroadcast rights to the Gold Coast Com-monwealth Games in 2018 for an esti-mated $43 million.

The agreement with Seven en-compasses the rights for free-to-air tele-vision, pay television, radio, digital, mobile and Hybrid Broadcast Broad-band TV. Seven, the No. 1 free-to-air tele-vision network, announced earlier thismonth that it had bought the rights forthe next three Olympic Games - the2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, the 2018Winter Games in Pyeongchang, SouthKorea, and the 2020 Tokyo Games.

"This is part of a broader strategy, which obviously involves the Olympicsacross the next decade," Seven chiefexecutive Tim Worner said. "We are inthe game of delivering the biggest audi-ences in television and we certainlyexpect to be in that game in 2018 and formany years to come."

Ten paid an estimated $30 million tobroadcast the Glasgow Common-wealth Games, which finished earlierthis month, while Nine EntertainmentCo paid about $45 million for the Mel-bourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.Seven last broadcast the Common-wealth Games in 2002 from Manches-ter in the United Kingdom.

Mr Worner said that while the GoldCoast event had been on Seven's radarfor "some time", the decision to bid wasonly made after the network ann-ounced the Olympics deal.

"Nothing rates like a home Games,"he said. "We saw that with Sydney in

2000 and we saw that with Melbournein 2006."

It had been reported there was a lackof interest from the free-to-air networksin the Gold Coast Games, although thesuccess of Glasgow on Ten seems tohave reignited interest in the Common-wealth Games generally.

Mr Worner recalled powerhouseshows on Seven such as Grey's Anat-omy, Lost and Desperate Housewivesbeing "wiped out" by Nine's coverageof the Melbourne Games. "We thoughtthey were bomb-proof at the time,"he said.

Seven chairman Kerry Stokes saidthe network was looking forward toworking with the CommonwealthGames Federation (CGF). "Importantly,

our agreements with the InternationalOlympic Committee and the Common-wealth Games allow our business tosupport Australian athletes across boththe Olympic Games and Common-wealth Games over the coming decade,and... these partnerships will play akey role in defining and building ourmedia presence," he said.

CGF chief executive Mike Hoopersaid the deal with Seven would ensurethe event would have the widest possi-ble coverage across Australia.

"Seven's commitment, coming offthe success of Glasgow, illustrates theenduring appeal and bright future ofthe Commonwealth Games as we lookahead to 2018 on the Gold Coast andbeyond," he said.

KERRY Stokes’ Seven Net-work has shelled out about$40 million for exclusive rightsto the Gold Coast Common-wealth Games in 2018.

Seven is focused on winningthe rights to more live sports,as illustrated by its recent ac-

quisition of American foot-ball’s NFL competition.

Mr Worner said Sevenwould look at negotiating withpay-TV channel Fox Sports tosell off some of the Common-wealth Games rights.

But he said Seven’s two ad-ditional digital channels, aswell as the forthcoming launchof Hybrid Broadcast Broad-band TV, meant it may use bigevent sports rights entirely forits own platforms.
