GENERAL POINTS RELATINGTO CHILD SEATS

Although one of PEUGEOT's maincriteria when designing your vehicle, the safety of your children also de-pends on you.For maximum safety, please follow

these precautions:

- Since 1992, all children under theage of 10 must travel in appro-ved child seats* suited to theirweight, on seats tted with a seatbelt or ISOFIX mountings.

- A child weighing less than 9 kgmust travel in the rearwards fa-cing position both in the frontand in the rear. PEUGEOT re-commends that children shouldtravel in the "rearwards facing"position up to the age of two.

-  Statistically, the safest seats inyour vehicle for the transpor-tation of children are the rearseats. PEUGEOT recommendsthat children travel in the reareven when a "rearwards facing"child seat is used.

- If a child is travelling on a boosterseat, check that the lap section ofthe seat belt passes over the child'sthighs correctly. The chest sectionof the seat belt must be positionedon the child's shoulder without tou-ching the neck. PEUGEOT recom-mends that you use a booster seatwith a back, tted with a seat beltguide at shoulder level.

- Remember to fasten the seat beltor the child seat harness keepingthe slack in relation to the child'sbody to a minimum, even for short journeys.

Special points relating to thetransportation of children on thefront passenger seat*

Children under the age of 10 must nottravel in the forwards facing position, unless the rear seats are already oc-cupied by other children or the rearseats cannot be used (absent or

folded). In this case, adjust the frontpassenger seat to the intermediatelongitudinal position and leave thepassenger air bag armed. The transportation of children in therearwards facing position is permit-ted. In this position, it is essential todisarm the passenger air bag. Other-wise, the child would risk being killedor seriously injured if the air bag wereto inate.

* According to current legislation inthe country.

"ISOFIX" MOUNTINGS*

The front passenger seat*, the rightside and left side* seats of the rearseat (saloon and 206 SW) and theone third section of the rear seat(206 RC) are tted with  ISOFIXmountings. These are two ringslocated between the seat back andthe seat cushion. The ISOFIX child seats  are ttedwith two locks which are securedeasily on these rings.Installing a child seat in a vehicleincorrectly compromises the protec-tion of the child in the event of animpact.

This ISOFIX system guarantees reli-able, safe and fast tting of the childseat in your vehicle.

The ISOFIX child seat approvedfor PEUGEOT vehicles and soldby PEUGEOT dealers is the IsoxKIDDY** child seat. It can be ttedin the "rear facing" position from birthto 13 kg and in the "forwards facing"position from 9 to 18 kg.

Installation of the Isox KIDDYchild seat

- In the "rear facing" position:•  in the front passenger seat, the

vehicle seat must be moved asfar forward as possible so thatthe body of the Isox KIDDYseat is in contact with or asclose as possible to the fascia.

•  in the rear, the body of the IsoxKIDDY seat must be in contactwith the seat back of the corres-ponding front seat.

- In the "forwards facing" position:•  in the rear, it is imperative that

the front seat is in the mid-waylongitudinal position, with theseat back upright.

In the 206 RC, the Isox KIDDY seatmust only be used in the sitting posi-tion. Refer to the child seat's installa-tion guide for this setting.

The Isox KIDDY child seat can alsobe used on seats not tted with ISO-FIX mountings. In this case it is com-pulsory to attach it to the vehicle'sseat by means of the three-pointseat belt.

Follow the instructions for ttingthe child seat in the seat manufac-turer's instruction booklet.

* According to specication.** You can only t ISOFIX child seats

approved by PEUGEOT and soldby PEUGEOT dealers on your ve-hicle's ISOFIX mountings.

ELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCEDISTRIBUTION (EBFD)

The ABS, in conjunction with theelectronic brake force distribution, increases the stability and manoe-vrability of your vehicle on braking,

in particular on poor or slippery roadsurfaces.

Note:  when changing wheels (tyresand rims), make sure that these areapproved.

The anti-lock braking system comesinto operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

In an emergency, this system ena-bles the optimum braking pressureto be reached more quickly, thus re-ducing the stopping distance.

It is triggered by the speed at whichthe brake pedal is activated. The ef-

fect of this is a reduction in the resist-ance of the pedal and an increase inbraking efciency.

In the event of emergency braking, depending on the force of the de-celeration, the hazard warning lightsare switched on automatically. Theyare switched off automatically on ac-celeration.

When this warning light co-mes on, accompanied by

a buzzer and the message "ABS fault", it indicates that

there is a malfunction of the ABS,which can cause a loss of control ofthe vehicle when braking.

STOP  and ABS warninglights, accompanied by a

buzzer and the message 'Brakingfault', it indicates that there is a mal-function of the electronic brake forcedistribution, which can cause a loss ofcontrol of the vehicle when braking.

Stop immediately. In both cases, consult a PEUGEOTdealer.

Normal operation of the ABS maymake itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal.

In emergency braking, pressvery rmly without releasing

the pressure.

g gto maximise the safety of the oc-cupants in the event of serious col-lisions. They work in conjunctionwith the force-limiting seat belts. The electronic detectors register andanalyse any abrupt deceleration of

the vehicle: if the triggering thresh-old is reached, the air bags inateinstantly and protect the occupantsof the vehicle.

Immediately after the impact, the airbags deate rapidly so that they donot hinder the visibility of the occu-pants nor their exit if necessary fromthe vehicle.

The air bags are not deployed in thecase of collisions which are not seri-ous, for which the seat belt is suf-cient to ensure maximum protection.

The seriousness of a collision de-pends on the nature of the obstacleand the speed of the vehicle at themoment of the collision.

Air bags only operate when theignition is switched on.

Note:  the gas escaping from the airbags can be a minor irritant.

FRONT AIR BAGS

These are folded in the centre of thesteering wheel for the driver and inthe fascia for the front passenger.

They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the passengerair bag is disarmed.

Special features of the automaticgearbox

When towing with all four wheels onthe ground, the following rules mustbe adhered to:

- gear lever in position N,- tow the vehicle at a speed less than

30 mph (50 km/h) over a distanceof not more than 30 miles (50 km),

- do not add oil to the gearbox.

TOWING A TRAILER,CARAVAN, BOAT etc.

Only use original PEUGEOT towbars that have been tested andapproved from the design stage ofyour vehicle.

The tow bar must be tted by aPEUGEOT dealer.

Your vehicle is primarily designedfor transporting people and luggagebut it may also be used for towing atrailer.

Driving with a trailer subjects the tow-ing vehicle to more signicant stressand its driver must be particularlycareful.

Air density decreases with altitude, thus reducing engine performance. Above 1 000 metres, the maximumtowing load must be reduced by10 % and so on for every 1 000 me-

tres of altitude.

Driving advice

Distribution of loads: Distribute theload in the trailer so that the heaviestitems are as close as possible to theaxle and the nose weight approach-es the maximum permitted withoutexceeding it.

Cooling: Towing a trailer on a slopeincreases the temperature of thecoolant.

As the fan is electrically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependenton the engine speed.

On the contrary, use a high gear tolower the engine speed and reduceyour speed.

The maximum towing load on a longslope depends on the gradient andthe outside temperature.

In all cases, pay attention to thecoolant temperature.

observing the recommended pres-sures.

Braking: Towing increases the braking

distance.

Lights: Check the electrical signallingon the trailer.

Side wind: Take into acount theincreased sensitivity to side wind.
