Aubrey 380 Area Chamber of Commerce

LETTER OF APPRECIATION

As the Chamber begins another year, we like any business face new challenges and new opportunities. Each year one-third of the board seats expire and are

required to be filled through a nomination and election process. This process brings a challenge of maintaining continuity, while at the same time capturing the new opportunity brought about from the fresh minds and ideas of new Board members. This year 2 members are being reseated and the remaining 2 seats are being filled with new members to the board.

It is with extreme gratitude and appreciation that we extend to Danny Mitchell and Jay Whetsell for their unselfish time and commitment each demonstrated for the betterment of the Chamber and our business community at large. Danny and Jay served on the Board for a combined 17 years. Each brought to the table specific strengths and both were accomplished leaders in many ways. Their contributions have been well noted and their impact will be lasting. Danny served as Board President 3 of his 9 year tenure. Jay headed up the membership ribbon cutting program for all of his 8 year tenure. Both of these individuals were among

the fathers of our annual golf tournament. Under their leadership, the tournament has grown from concept to one of the finest events in our area. While each asked that they not be considered for reelection again to the board, each will remain active in our Chamber, continue their work with the golf tournament, and remain a participant in various other activities. The Board and the business community extend our thanks for a job well done and look forward to their continued support and involvement with the Chamber and community.

We are pleased to welcome Margaret Hines and Steve Coomes as they join the Chamber Board for a 3 year term. It is exciting to see members of our business community step up and declare their willingness and commitment to take a more active role in the growth and development of the Aubrey 380 area. We welcome their enthusiasm, ideas, and contributions that they will make as board members.

Margaret Hines is a woman of considerable achievements. She graduated from Denton High School in the top 10% of her class. Margaret enrolled in TWU, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Science. She began her medical career working in Dallas as a Critical Care RN, where she achieved her certification in

Critical Care. Later became a Critical Care Nurse Educator at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton, where she trained new graduate RN’s to become critical care nurses. She has continued her own education, graduating Summa cum Laude, with a Master’s degree in Science as well as certification as a Nurse Practitioner.

In 2010 Margaret opened Springhill Medical & Aesthetics. She believes in being a truly patient-oriented professional, committing to the concept that the patient and she form a partnership to develop an individualized and a lasting health plan.

Margaret describes herself as an astute medical professional, teacher, partner, advocate, fearless and will go the extra mile. These are traits and skills that will serve her well in becoming a significant contributor to our Board and our community. Margaret has lived in Aubrey with her husband Brad since 1992 and states her roots are here; she intends to stay as part of a growing community. She has been active in community affairs such as the annual Peanut Festival, Christmas on Main, Casino Night. Additionally, she has offered her time and skills to give free high school physical exams.

Steve Coomes is a local native, born in Denton, Texas. He completed his education

at Denton High and then focused on pharmacy studies at Howard University, receiving a B.S. degree in Pharmacy in 1991. Since then he has been involved in our surrounding area business communities and other social/civic activities. Steve is the proud owner of Aubrey Health Mart Pharmacy, a recent relocation and major expansion of his business and facility which houses other medical related businesses. The development and financial expenditure in his new facility demonstrates his commitment in the positive economic environment of our areas. This approach and belief in taking action will serve him well in making contributions to our Chamber.

His business philosophy is centered and focused on patient-oriented care and providing a complete selection of related goods and services. When off the job, he may be found focused on amateur motor racing, wakeboarding, or aviation.

Again, I want to thank Danny and Jay for their many contributions and years of service. And thank you to Margaret and Steve for their willingness to serve on our Board.

MEMBERS WANTEDEstablished Chamber seeks forward-thinking individuals to join our team of dedicated, active professionals. You need us to help promote and grow your business. We need you to further develop a vital, thriving business machine in the Aubrey 380 Area. Experience a plus, but not required. All welcome. Will train.

Would you like to host a Chamber Mixer to bring folks into your place of business? Here are a few ideas to keep in mind:

Develop a “sales mentality” toward your mixer. Don’t think of this as just another party for your Chamber friends — it’s an opportunity to showcase your business. This is your chance to give a positive impression to a large group of influential people and prospective customers for very little expense!

Publicize, publicize, publicize! Schedule your mixer 45-60 days in advance to allow adequate time for promotion in the newsletter, emails, etc. Make sure everybody knows your mixer is going to be a good one. Issue personal invitations to key people. Get names from the Chamber office. Get a “calling tree” in operation on the day of the event as a reminder.

Find ways to make your guests feel comfortable. Have a pleasant greeter at the door to welcome your guests right away. Make sure everybody gets a neatly printed name tag. If newcomers arrive alone, have an employee on hand to introduce them to others. Provide refreshments and snacks. Offer tours if appropriate. Get rid of tables and chairs to encourage mixing.

Surround your guests with images of your business. Create a large welcome poster or banner with your store/firm name or logo. Display or demonstrate something of interest

that will stick in people’s minds about your business—a unique product or service. Urge guests to pick up your coupon, flyer, or brochure on the way out. Collect business cards and hold a drawing of goods or services related to your business. (The cards become a useful file for follow-up sales calls.)

Put some effort into a welcoming speech. If given a chance to address your guests, be sure to give a brief history of the store or firm, introduce owners and employees, describe your best products or services and reveal goals for the future. Don’t be afraid to brag a bit about the things of which you are most proud. Keep the speech under five minutes and close by thanking guests for coming and telling them you would appreciate their patronage.

To schedule a mixer, or for more information, contact Donna Sims at 940-365-9781.
