Day 4: Sat, Feb 11 – BUENOS AIRES – EXCURSION TO FIESTA GUACHA. In Argentina ranches dedicated to cattle breeding and to growing grains are called Estancias. Today, enjoy a complete day at an estancia in the pampas, where Buenos Aires ends and the home of the gauchos begins! This full-day excursion is an ideal opportunity to absorb the atmosphere of rural life and a colorful feast in the heart of the pampas. Lunch includes world-renowned Argentine beef and live entertainment by gauchos in their native costumes. After lunch, the folklore show will begin with its music and dances. The day will end with demonstration of typical activities at an estancia: regional games on horseback such as the carrera de sortijas, where two teams gallop at full tilt under a wooden arch and try to pass a pin through a small ring hanging from the arch. After returning to your hotel, your evening is at your leisure. (B, L)

Day 19: Sun, Feb 26 – BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – DISEMBARK NORWEGIAN STAR – EXCURSION TO MARKETS. Your Tour Director will greet you upon disembarkation to lead you on our THREE MARKET TOUR. You will go to the various markets, which are held in very famous places in Buenos Aires. First stop will be made in LA BOCA, which is literally Buenos Aires’ most colorful barrio. It was settled and built up by Italian immigrants along the Riachuelo, a sinuous waterway. Much of La Boca’s color springs from the brightly painted houses and corrugated metal roofs of the Caminito, a popular pedestrian walk and former rail terminus that takes its name from a popular tango. At the Caminito, painters are offering their pictures representing Caminito Street or typical tango scenes. At the end of the Caminito, guests will find a market offering handicrafts. Continuing our tour you will reach the next barrio SAN TELMO which is an artist’s quarter where bohemians find large spaces at low rents. San Telmo is the best kept historical neighborhood and oldest district of Buenos Aires. Here you have time to stroll around Plaza Dorrego, where you can find many antique shops. On Sundays PLAZA DORREGO is a “MUST,” as there is an antique market. Finally you will visit Recoleta. Among the areas to which the upper-class Portenos of San Telmo relocated after the yellow fever epidemic of the 1870s, Recoleta is today one of Buenos Aires’ most fashionable districts. At the CEMETERY OF RECOLETA you will find the grave of Eva Duarte who became famous as Eva Perón (Evita). The cemetery is the center of this aristocratic district. Here you will find the Municipal Cultural Center, elegant boutiques and excellent restaurants, surrounded by centennial trees. During the weekend on the Plaza Francia a handicraft market is held and many street artists are representing their skills.
