Courses and Speakers

The Continuum of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry-The Impact of Medical Management of Caries - Joel H. Berg, DDS, MS

This course will provide the most up-to-date information regarding emerging technologies to manage caries in your practice, also in non-restorative ways. The talk will review the science behind caries management developments and will provide the framework and back drop for a movement toward “a new kind of dentistry”. It will discuss the big trends in the dental profession and indicate how medical management of caries is at the hub of much of product development. This talk will set the stage for the speakers to follow over the 2-day program.

After attending this seminar, the participant will be able to:

• List currently available caries detection devices

• Describe new technologies and how they will detectcaries at a very early stage

• Describe methods of risk assessment for dentalcaries

• Understand some of the emerging science relatedto oral biofilms and its impact on our understandingof dental caries including the use of silver diaminefluoride

• Describe the use of glass ionomer materials as anexample of caries management

Joel H. Berg, DDS, MSAn Joel Berg, DDS, MS is an industry-respected consultant, lecturer, author, and thought leader in dentistry. A board-certified pediatric dentist, Joel was President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) from 2012 to 2013 and President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry from 2018 to 2019. Joel is also the former Dean at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and was a principal in the creation of a 26-chair, state-of-the-art facility that provides comprehensive oral health services to children. He continues to practice pediatric dentistry part-time in Phoenix, and stays connected to organized dentistry through his consulting business, industry research and published works, and various philanthropic roles.

Joel is co-editor of the book “Early Childhood Oral Health,” and has published extensively on subjects, including dental restorative materials for children and medical management of dental caries. He lectures to dental professionals regularly on “Medical Management of Dental Caries” and “Moving Toward a New Kind of Dentistry.” He is currently looking at the trends in the profession that have been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and which may have a

positive effect on the future of dentistry.

Joel is also the host of “Pedo Teeth Talk,” a podcast that invites AAPD leaders, experts, and professionals in the field to talk about all things pediatric dentistry. The podcast takes a holistic approach to its coverage and its wide-ranging topics include the best infection control practices, behavioral management, how to manage your business online, innovative ideas for best practices, and discussions on policies and legislation that could affect pediatric dentistry. Given the popularity of “Pedo Teeth Talk,” Joel hosts the AAPD-launched podcast series, “Newly Erupted,” which targets pediatric dental residents and new practitioners. The topics are selected by a committee of young members of the profession.

In his free time, you can find him lounging by the pool, hanging with his Great Pyrenees puppy named Walden, or spending time with his two daughters.

Minimal Intervention Approaches for Caries Management in Children. The Specialist Approach. - Dr. Yasmi Crystal, DDS, DMD, MS

Traditional operative treatment using different restorative materials, is taught in pediatric dentistry programs to treat the dental destruction caused by dental caries. Although it beautifully restores form and function with success, it is invasive, technique sensitive, costly, and requires significant cooperation from the patient. Many patients are unable to receive this treatment because they are too young, anxious, have medical conditions that limit their cooperation, or lack the resources to access care. The advent of new materials, concepts and products, have allowed the introduction of Minimal Intervention Approaches to manage caries lesions that allow us to give patients an alternative option. This presentation will discuss the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride, ITR/ART and the Hall Technique as Minimal Intervention Approaches in the management of caries in Pediatric Dentistry, from the specialist perspective.

With this presentation, attendees will be able to:

1. Differentiate the concepts of minimally invasive dentistry, minimal intervention approaches and personalized optimal interventionsunderstanding the needs and advantages of these approaches.

2. Understand the scientific basis for current recommendations for SDF, ITR/ART and the Hall Technique as well as their indications, prosand cons.

3. Acquire the knowledge and techniques and pitfalls required to implement these approaches into a specialty pediatric dentistryclinical practice.

Dr. Yasmi Crystal, DDS, DMD, MS

Dr. Yasmi Crystal is the founder and senior specialist at Comprehensive Pediatric Dentistry in New Jersey where she has been in private practice for over 30 years. Concurrently she is Clinical Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry, and on the medical staff of the Robert Wood Johnson, Rutgers University Hospital.

Dr. Crystal has a DDS degree from Universidad Tecnologica de Mexico (UNITEC), a DMD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Pediatric Dental specialty training from Eastman Dental Center, University of Rochester and a MSc in Clinical and Translational Research from CTSI, NYU School of Medicine.

Dr. Crystal is a Diplomate and an Examiner for the written and oral sections of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is a past trustee of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), a member of the Editorial Board of Pediatric Dentistry Journal, an AAPD spokesperson, a member of the AAPD Council on Scientific Affairs and consultant on special projects of Evidence Based Dentistry. She is the current President of

the Pediatric Oral Health Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research and Fellow of the American Society for Dental Esthetics, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

Dr. Crystal is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the IAPD and past Chair of their Scientific Committee. She is a current member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Dentistry (Revista ALOP) and a manuscript reviewer for several major journals including Pediatric Dentistry, JDR, JADA, IJPD, BDJ, JOCPD and several others.

As a leader in inter-professional relations, she has worked as Oral Health consultant, speaker and preceptor for the AAP, NJAAP, and is a faculty member for the Family Practice MD program at Somerset Medical Center, NJ, with her clinic being a rotation site for family practice MD residents.

Dr. Crystal has participated in the writing of national guidelines to improve the practice of Pediatric Dentistry. She has presented lectures and continuing education courses to varied health care audiences in the US and across the world. She has published numerous research articles in peer reviewed scientific journals on topics of Caries Management, Risk Assessment and Minimal Intervention Approaches including Silver Diamine Fluoride therapy and the Role of Conscious Sedation for delivery of care in Pediatric Dentistry.

As a researcher, educator and with over 30 years’ experience as a private primary care provider, her presentations blend evidence-based recommendations with down to earth approaches that work for the provision of care in public and private settings in the US and abroad.

Minimal Aerosol Production During the Restoration of carious Primary Teeth - Dr. Jed Best

As the Pandemic caused by Covid-19 has waned it , according to the WHO, will not completely disappear. There will be periodic outbreaks and the WHO and epidemiologists predict that the time interval between these and other catastrophic events will decrease over time.

Dentistry has done an excellent job since the presence of HIV of being up to date with infection control and the advisories of the CDC, FDA, WHO and OSHA.However there is still a hesitancy of parents to bring their children to the dentists. In the February 2021 issue of the ADA Huddle it was claimed that forty percent of parents are still keeping their children away from our offices. In the future, pediatric dentists will need to be agile and flexible to deal with these parents and children.

What can we do? While the transmission of Covid-19 was almost nil in US dental offices we do have alternatives from “normal” restorative procedures to help ally parent’s fears. The advances in material science offer us techniques that restore primary teeth with permanent restorations and which can eliminate the need for the air/water spray. In addition, certain types of handpieces also provide a reduction in aerosol production. Finally, certain LED curing lights are adjuncts to the facilitation of use of these new materials.

It is this latter paragraph that we will discuss. The pros and cons of the categories of materials and devices will be highlighted so that the clinician can make informed decisions. The practitioner should leave this talk as an “educated consumer” of what treatment options and techniques are available.

Prevalence, Problems and Practical Restorative Approaches for Developmental Defects of Teeth - Dr. Tim Wright, DDS, MS

There are hundreds of conditions including genetic and environmental conditions that can affect tooth development. Some conditions such as molar-incisor hypomineralization are common in the general population and can present marked restorative challenges. Defects in anterior teeth are an esthetic challenge. There are numerous approaches that can be used to manage these clinically diverse developmental dental defects. A variety of materials and restorative techniques can provide protection from bl’eakdown, esthetics, help manage hypersensitivity and provide form and function. This presentation will discuss the different materials and treatment options and the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques, and the evidence related to different restorative approaches. Cases illustrating digital workflows for restorative care of both anterior and posterior teeth will be presented providing information that you can adopt in your pediatric dental practice.

Learning Objective:Understand the cause and prevalence of the more common developmental defects of teeth.Understand the application of different restorative approaches to manage developmental defects of teeth.Be familiar with materials and their indications for use in both direct and indirect restorative approaches including those used in digital workflows.

Dr. Jed BestDr. Jed Best earned his dental degree from Case Western Reserve University and went on to complete a pediatric dental residency at the University of Minnesota. At the end of his residency and thesis defense he was awarded an MS degree and subsequently was a AAPD Graduate Student Research Award winner.

He is a past president of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; The International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. Dr. Best has been in clinical practice for almost forty years and holds teaching positions at Case School of Dental Medicine, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and New York University College of Dentistry.

Dr. Timothy Wright, MS, DDS

Dr. Wright currently serves as interim chairman of the Department of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. He is a professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, and is a former chairman of the department.

Dr. Wright completed his D.D.S. degree from West Virginia University and went on to pursue his pediatric

dentistry residency and a National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship in Caries Research at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, prior to joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Wright has authored more than 100 publications and his research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of developmental defects in teeth resulting from hereditary and environmental condition as well as and understanding normal tooth development.

Dr. Wright has served as chair for the American Dental Association’s and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Council on Scientific Affairs and maintains an active private practice that includes providing care to patients with special medical and dental health care needs.

What Materials Are Available -When, Where And Why? - Dr. Kevin J. Donly, DDS, MS

This course will discuss glass ionomer cements and their development through the contemporary photopolymerized glass ionomers, including clinical utilization, advantages and disadvantages. Bioactive restorative materials, their unique formulation, and clinical utilization will also be addressed. The use of resin-based composites in Pediatric Dentistry will be reviewed, including the concept of using hybrid, flowable, universal and condensable resins. Appropriate clinical utilization, indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages will be discussed.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will:• have an understanding of the clinical utilization of traditional, photopolymerized glass ionomer cements and bioactive restorative materials,including indications and contraindications.

• be exposed to the newer commercially available resin-based composites, including universal resin, and dentin bonding resins, understandtheir mechanism of action and visualize clinical utilization of these materials.

Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics For The Common Good - Dr.s Scott Goodman, DDS, MS and Gerry Samson, DDS, ABO, FACD, TE

Allowing that pediatric dentistry and orthodontics are two sides of the same coin, both specialties have a natural potential to function in and for the common good. Examining the history of that statement shows a mix of good and not-so-good results. This presentation will offer real-life clinical as well as business examples and analysis of those relationships which were successful and those which were not.

Presentation objectives:

1. Indications and contra-indications for primary and mixed dentition orthodontic treatment2. Improve your practice image and value by understanding and applying age-appropriate orthodontic treatment3. Improve practice communication and documentation4. Specific risks and benefits of having an orthodontist join your pediatric practice5. Specific risks and benefits of a pediatric dentist joining an orthodontist’s practice.

Kevin J. Donly, D.D.S., M.S.

Dr. Donly is currently a Professor and Chair in the Department of Developmental Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He received his D.D.S. in 1984, Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 1986, and M.S. in 1986 from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Donly is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, was on the Board of Trustees for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, was on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, is the previous Chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Council on Post-doctoral Educa-tion, is Past-President of the American Society of Dentistry for Children and was the Pediatric Dentistry Commis-sioner to the Commission on Dental Accreditation. He is currently the Immediate Past-President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has published over 350 chapters, manuscripts and abstracts associated with pediatric dentistry, prevention, dental restorative materials research and clinical utilization.

Scott Goodman, DDS, MS Dr. Scott Goodman is a 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University Dental School. He completed a GPR residency at the Memorial Hospital, Worcester, Mass and a fellowship at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University prior to obtaining his Master’s degree and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Iowa in 1983.

Scott is a Diplomat of The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He enjoys lecturing to residents at multiple dental schools and residency programs, concentrating on pediatric growth and development, interceptive orthodontic therapy, practice management and intra office conflict resolution. In addition, Scott has been a consultant to management organizations and private practices to improve office protocols, chart documentation, and practice productivity.

In private practice limited to pediatric dentistry, Scott is the founder of a group pediatric practice in the Charlotte, NC Metropolitan area. He has worked with national/ state dental organizations and state/local governments to improve access to pediatric dental care and has been the local clinic coordinator for the Charlotte- Mission of Mercy Clinic since its inception.

Gerry Samson, DDS, ABO, FACD, TE Described as an educational entertainer, Gerry completed pediatric dental residency at Emory University, 1979 and orthodontics at Northwestern University, 1981 under the direction of Dr. Hal Perry.

For 39 years, from 1981 - 2016 Gerry had an exclusive orthodontic practice in Atlanta, Georgia USA, is a Diplomat of

The American Board of Orthodontics and Fellow of The American College of Dentists. Currently, Dr. Samson holds formal faculty appointments at 6 university postgraduate programs in the USA, lectures extensively, reviews articles submitted for publication to The American Journal of Orthodontics, The Angle Orthodontist and the newly formed AJO-DO Clinical Companion. In addition, Gerry is orthodontic clinical director for Specialty Dental Brands and consultant for White Oak Orthodontic Products.
