Welcome to HumberI would like to start by thanking you for taking the time to consider Humber as an option. We are focused on your future and take the responsibility of your education very seriously.

I am glad Canada is on your ‘consideration list’ of education options around the world. We have been educating thousands of international students from around the world – more than 130 countries at last count – for many years. Students have told us that they chose Canada, Toronto and Humber because of our global outlook, incredible international sensibilities and tremendous career-focused education. Our student surveys tell us that we continue to exceed student expectations on these items.

Over the past year, we have all had to face changes in the way we live and learn beyond what any of us had imagined. Even with all the change, some things have remained constant.  Humber’s commitment to ongoing quality education remains, and can be seen in the incredible investment and energy we have put into making our online studies unique, relevant and student-focused. Our faculty members have fully embraced online learning and are developing truly innovative ways to engage with their students and for students to engage with each other, from wherever you are in the world.

Our commitment goes beyond the classroom. We will continue to provide you and your fellow students with career-focused education and connections to industry in a supportive and student-focused environment.

I look forward to welcoming you to Humber soon!

Andrew Ness Dean, International Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning

DIPLOMA, PHOTOGRAPHY

Choosing the right institution was very important to me – a college that would provide me with the best learning experience and make me career ready. Photography was my passion and now I wanted to pursue it as a career. Humber, with their expert faculty, modern labs, devices that meet the industry standards and multiple resource centres, was exactly the kind of college I was looking for; I wanted to learn from the very best.

As part of my program at Humber, I also decided to go to Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand for a summer abroad experience. The idea of gaining academic credits while travelling sounded like a perfect summer plan to me. It was a chance to meet students from around the world and learn the cultural history of the country.

I gained valuable Canadian experience by working as a Global Learning Student Ambassador and also as a photographer for the Humber Hawks. Both jobs provided me with a mix of skills and experiences that I can add to my resumé, which is going to be very useful for my future employment.

When I look back to my first day on campus and remember how overwhelmed I was, I feel fortunate to have come this far with the support of many, including my peer mentor. I have so many new friends now and have expanded my network by getting to know new people in the industry.

Watch why each year 6,500 international students from 130+ countries choose Humber Collegetinyurl.com/HumberGlobalStudentStories

Toronto is the city that holds my heart. I live in Vaughan which is located in the north of the city, but Toronto’s Entertainment District is where I socialize with my friends. Torontonians are very friendly, and the city is culturally diverse, which is why you can easily become friends with people from all over the world. During summer I enjoy biking around the city and in winter I like tobogganing. If you are a basketball fan then I suggest you watch a Toronto Raptors game, our professional basketball team.

DIPLOMA, ADVERTISING AND MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

Before coming to Canada, I worked in communications and marketing for ten years in Colombia. I built a successful career, but I felt some gaps in my digital marketing skills. Humber’s program was the right fit for me. It helped me improve my skills especially in social media, copywriting, and media planning. I further polished my skills by working in a part-time job at Humber and during my social media marketing internship.

I am now working as a Junior Communications Specialist at Loblaws, Canada’s largest retailer. I am amazed by this opportunity with lots of learning and growth potential, and I’ll take full advantage of it.

I am completing my internship with the Accessible Media Design program at Humber and my goal is to become a director of photography for TV shows and movies.

BACHELOR, MUSIC

I first came to Canada through a working holiday program, and although I was a jazz vocalist for 10 years in Japan, I couldn’t sing in English. I started taking weekly private singing lessons at Humber College after work. As time went by, I became more interested in the Bachelor of Music program at Humber. One day, I sat in a first-year vocal master class and was impressed by their performance. They were all professionals. I wanted to improve so I enrolled at Humber.

During the program we also learned about the history, new technologies, production and the business of music. My goal is to educate and develop the music culture in Japan.

The best thing about this program is the teaching faculty and how they help you to connect with the industry. We had CEOs and managers come to our classes and speak to us. This exposure increased my confidence, and networking helped me land full-time job offers.

My professors also helped me work through assignments to develop interpersonal skills, like public speaking.

The most significant moment for me was getting my co-op placement in an independent adjusting company. This opportunity came as a result of a Humber College partnership and connections with the industry.

These opportunities also empower you to think critically, solve problems, and become a leader of change as you start your career.

Anxhelo Mecollari, Elbasan, Albania

ADVANCED DIPLOMA, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

I visited Canada multiple times before as a tourist and fell in love with Toronto. I had a dream to study mechanical engineering and as I was researching, I came across the program at Humber and also a professor who was from my country, Albania. We scheduled a phone call and he provided me with some in-depth information and insights into the program. I knew that Humber was the right choice.

Each year, I found myself learning new concepts and skills that prepared me for the upcoming projects. In my fourth semester, I designed and built a hydraulic automated gripper that can utilize pick and place robotic systems weighing up to 4 kg from point A to B.

My program also had a capstone project component, where our group along with students from other similar programs, worked on a project with SEW–EuroDrive. We designed an attachment for an automated guided vehicle that could handle large size but lightweight payloads of up to 400 kg. We also created additional storage space for extra batteries and tools.

Currently, I am working as a research assistant at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation. I enjoy assisting with various projects, mechanical services, and also training students on how to operate various equipment.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA, GAME PROGRAMMING

Video games have always been a part of my life, but I never thought of making a career out of it. Until one day I was playing a Ubisoft game and it inspired me to follow a path in the video game industry.

Game Programming is a video game-focused program, but the skills you learn are transferable to other industries. Depending on your career goals, you can either choose to work for a video game studio or a software developer.

Thanks to Humber’s networking opportunities, I landed my first job while I was still in my first semester. For the past three years, I have worked with two different companies as a game developer and a junior developer. Since 2019, I have been working part-time as a programmer for UP360, a start-up based in Toronto.

During the same time, I also worked as a Peer Tutor at Humber College and initiated an ongoing project that involved the Faculty of Media & Creative Arts and the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation. The goal was to build a financially affordable breath controller that would help people who have motor neuron disease so they can interact more easily with video games.

I also represented Humber College at hackathons across North America, such as Hack the North, BostonHacks and MHacks. These hackathons helped me gain new skills and also provided me with the opportunity to work with real-world issues.

A Humber education helps you go from classroom to career, gaining real-world experience along the way.tinyurl.com/HumberGlobalCareerOutcomes

Roberto Chediak, Margarita, Venezuela

BACHELOR OF COMMERCE, INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

I studied in Scotland on a semester exchange at Robert Gordon University (RGU), one of the partner institutions of Humber. I decided to choose RGU for its impeccable reputation in the United Kingdom and also the many festivals and industry events that take place around the city. It was a great way to meet new people and also build a professional network. At the university, I enjoyed the history, people and the teaching style of the professors. I made many new friends from all over the world including Germany, Finland, Denmark and many other European countries.

Coming to Scotland and combining the experience with Humber has further enhanced my study abroad experience and I have learned so much more about different cultures, traditions, lifestyle and unique teaching styles. I can say this with complete confidence that studying abroad has enriched my experiences two-fold and provided me with the opportunity to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, inside and outside of the classroom. I plan to take all these experiences back home and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

BACHELOR, DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS

I wouldn’t change a thing about my time at Humber! During the program, I was encouraged to explore new ideas and to create thoughtful work. Some highlights of the program include industry professionals visiting to talk to us about their journey, classroom discussions, and working on my capstone project.

Along with my studies, being involved in the school community was very important to me. I worked for First-Year Experience (FYE), IGNITE, and volunteered with the International Centre throughout my four years. I loved being involved and helping students have a better experience.

In 2019, I worked as a Digital Communications intern for a public relations agency. At the end of my internship, I was fortunate to be offered a part-time position as I finished up my final year at Humber. Once I graduated, I was offered a full-time job as a Creative Account Coordinator. I have learned so much about public relations through this role and the creative industry as a whole. I’m very excited to keep learning and growing in this field!

DIPLOMA, FITNESS AND HEALTH PROMOTION

Humber is more than a college to me, it’s a place that gave me a sense of belonging. Being an international student can be challenging, but with the resources and support available on campus including IGNITE Student Life, I had the most memorable years of my college life.

In my first year, I created the Humber Chinese Students Association – a platform for Chinese students to share our culture, values and traditions with everyone else. Especially the Lunar New Year, which is the biggest cultural event celebrated in China and other Asian countries.

Gaining international work experience is important and that’s why I worked part-time at the International Centre and then as a First-Year Experience mentor. You make so many new friends by volunteering on campus and by attending events. Apart from studying, I enjoy going to the gym and taking meditation classes.

In my free time, I explore Toronto. You will find me at Woodbine Beach in summer (yes, Toronto has beaches). And in winter, I go snowboarding at Blue Mountain.

ONTARIO GRADUATE CERTIFICATE, ADVERTISING MEDIA MANAGEMENT AND ONTARIO GRADUATE CERTIFICATE, MARKETING MANAGEMENT

My degree in Mass Media from Mumbai University helped me explore the creative process of the advertising industry. It also gave me the chance to work with big clients such as Coca-Cola and McCain Foods, but I wanted to learn more. I decided to move to Toronto for the vast career opportunities and also for all the rights I could enjoy as a gay man.

In 2018, I started the graduate certificate program in Marketing Management at Humber and later enrolled into the graduate certificate in Advertising Media Management with the drive to learn and understand all the aspects of the marketing industry.

At Humber, I had the opportunity to work on some really exciting projects, including working with real clients and conducting analytical research to achieve client needs and goals.

My main goal now is to work as a marketing assistant and become a brand manager in the next couple of years. Recently, I was hired at Bell (Canada’s largest telecommunications company) as a client strategy intern. Toronto has many work opportunities and I hope to soon see myself working full-time for a large company such as Bell. Humber is not only helping me achieve my career goals, but it also has some incredible resources including LGBTQ+ Resource Centre that has provided me with all the support that I needed to feel safe and included.

Hear from our students and graduates on how Humber’s hands-on, career-focused learning helped them chart the best path towards their goals.tinyurl.com/HumberGlobalStudentStories
