SESSION 4

4A: Q & A Panel Session

VCE Geography Expert Panel

This session wil l provide an opportunity to ask

questions, clarify points of the new Study

Design, and share ideas for 2022 and beyond.

4B: New to VCE

Trish Douglas, Eltham College

Lynne Griffiths, Ivanhoe Grammar School

(Retd)

Specifically designed for teachers new to

teaching VCE Geography. This session wil l cover

key concepts, tips and ways of approaching VCE

Geography teaching. It wil l provide

opportunities for attendees to ask questions and

build l inks with other teachers in a similar

situation.

4C: Indigenous Geographies: examining

the role of traditional owners in land-use

change and conflict

Theo Hartman, Coburg High School

Surprisingly there is no mention of aboriginality

or indigeneity in the study design, despite

traditional owners being integral to the

sustainabil ity and integrity of environmental

systems globally. This session wil l be a global

overview of the role that indigenous groups play

around the world in terms of land management

and land use practices, lore & wisdom, and

conflict & disasters. Specific cases from each

continent wil l cover legal issues, resistance, use

and occupancy mapping and indigenous

knowledge as key sustainable environmental

outcomes. These cases are key to understanding

the whole picture in Units 1-4, but especially in

Unit 3 Changing the Land.

SESSION 3

3A: Designing (not so) hazardous

fieldwork!

Micah Wilkins, Camberwell Girls Grammar

School

Tom Clark, Camberwell Girls Grammar School

In this session, you'l l be introduced to a range of

ideas to help you create and design your Unit 1

fieldwork. It wil l cover how to select a fieldwork

location, pre-fieldwork activities, collecting and

sorting data (both primary and secondary),

compile and write the fieldwork report. Graphic

organisers wil l be used to step teachers and

students through the process. A range of

examples wil l be provided, including bushfires,

introduced species, as well as traffic hazards.

3B: Remote Sensing: how to integrate and

invigorate with live and relevant data

Theo Hartman, Coburg High School

Remote sensing is a new direction in the VCE

study design - but what qualifies as remote

sensing? We wil l cover essential satell ites and

instrumentation in orbit, aerial sensing, ground

truthing and UAV telemetry - all of which can be

integrated into your student case study and

fieldwork endeavours.

3C: Unit 3: AoS 2: Land Use Change

Catherine Holmes, Xavier College

This presentation wil l go through the changes to

the new VCE Geography Study Design for Unit 3

Area of Study 2: Land Use Change. It wil l help to

familiarise and strengthen your understanding of

these changes and include ideas relating to

classroom teaching, embedding concepts and

skil ls, facil itating fieldwork, application in

geospatial technologies, and assessment.

PROGRAMFIELDWORK DAYTuesday 30.11.2021 > F2F

FIELDWORK 3: Fishermans Bend

Fieldwork

Location: Kirrip Park, South Melbourne

Karoline Walters, Camberwell Girls

Grammar School

Fishermans Bend is an exciting urban

development project that offers much as a Unit

3 Geography fieldwork site. This session

focuses on the Montague Precinct, the first of

five precincts to undergo a specific

development plan and aligns with the newly

released fieldwork resource published by the

GTAV in partnership with the Department of

Jobs, Precincts and Regions. On this fieldwork,

take a walking tour discovering the key

features of Montague and trial a range of

primary data collection methods, including the

application of geospatial technology. Leave

with an understanding the Precinct and with a

starting point for planning your own Montague

fieldwork.

Please note: the Fieldwork Day is a face-to-

face event and as such we are required to

observe the Victorian Government COVIDSafe

settings.

All participants wil l be required to check-in at

the fieldwork location using the Service

Victoria app.

You wil l need to show evidence of being fully

vaccinated or carry evidence of a medical

exemption to participate. To make things

easier, get your COVID-19 Digital Certificate

and link it to the Service Victoria App.

PRACTICAL: Use of geospatial

technologies in fieldwork

Location: Kirrip Park, South Melbourne

RMIT University

Be introduced to and practice easy-to-

implement ways of integrating geospatial

technologies into fieldwork.

Applicable to Units 1-3.

FIELDWORK 1: Plastic Pollution in our

Waterways

Location: Port Phillip EcoCentre, St Kilda

Pete Linder, Canopy of Care

Neil Blake OAM

Plastic pollution in our waterways has significant

environmental, social and economic

consequences and as such provides a

contemporary and highly relevant case study for

Unit 1 Hazards and Disasters. This case study

also lends itself to accessible and affordable

fieldwork opportunities whether that be on

school grounds, local streets, nearby rivers or

the beaches surrounding Port Phil l ip Bay.

FIELDWORK 2: Examining nature-based

tourism

Location: The Tan, Royal Botanic Gardens

Theo Hartman, Coburg High School

Come visit the Tan and enjoy the serenity of the

cultivated nature-scape, but also to better

understand how natural assets are being

leveraged to foster growth in the tourism sector

and to build biodiversity and resil ience in cities.

The session wil l cover primary data fieldwork

best practices as well as discuss key secondary

resources such as the DELWP Biodiversity 2037

Strategy. The session wil l be complimented by a

presentation from a garden ranger as well as a

short tour on the Garden Explorer.
