Spanish 3

In third year Spanish, studentscontinue the study ofgrammatical concepts with anemphasis placed on theintegration of previouslylearned material. Use of thelanguage in oral and writtenform is encouraged. The coursealso focuses on the differentcultural aspects of the manySpanish speaking countrieswhich will be introducedthrough traditional literature,historical selections and shortstories.

Spanish 4 Honors

IPrerequisite: Spanish 3Vocabulary and grammar skillsare developed through anemphasis on oral participation.Selected readings of bothclassical and contemporarySpanish literature are used toillustrate Spanish history andculture. Special assignmentsand drills will be used toprepare for the SAT ll and/orAdvanced Placement Exam.

WorldLanguageCourses

Spanish I & IIItalian I & IIFrench I & IILatin I & II

AP Spanish

Emphasis will be placed ondeveloping fluency inspeaking as well aslistening, reading, andwriting. Students willcontinue to studycontemporary works (plays,novels, short stories) ofauthors from Spain andother Spanish speakingcountries. Specialassignments and drills willbe used to prepare for theSAT II and/or AdvancedPlacement Exam. Studentsare strongly encouraged totake the AP examination.Completion of a summerassignment is required.

Prerequisite: Italian 2Andiamo! Having afoundation of basic Italian,students are now ready forthe expression of morecomplex ideas. Vocabularyand grammar throughcommunication areemphasized. Students willhave contact with Italy'srich culture, folklore,history, and artisticexpression.

AP Italian

Italian 4 Honors

Prerequisite: Italian 3 Avanti! Students will continuetheir study of the more complex yet subtle modes ofexpression through vocabulary and structure. Fluencyis emphasized in speaking and writing while readingskills are further developed through contact withItaly's literary tradition. Students are encouraged tocontinue their interest in the Italian Language andculture both within the classroom and beyond.

Advanced Topics inLatin I & II

The purpose of this course is tocontinue the development ofthe skills of those studentswhose abilities and desireshave taken them to theadvanced stages of the Latinlanguage. They will meet newgrammatical complexities andcontinue to develop their skillsin translating Latin to English.Students will continue to studyRoman history and culture andits effects on the developmentof Western Civilization.Advanced Topic I will focus onthe writings of great prosewriters: Livy, Caesar, Cicero andPetronius and an in depthanalysis of Roman history fromthe Late Republic to the heightof the Empire. Advanced TopicII will focus on the writings ofthe poets: Virgil, Ovid andCatullus and an in depth studyof the legends and myths ofAncient Rome.

Mindfulness For Students

Grades 11, 12 “Mindfulness meanspaying attention in a particular way;on purpose, in the presentmoment, and non-judgmentally.” –Jon Kabat-Zinn (1994) The goals ofmindfulness education are to helpstudents learn and improve: ● Self-awareness ● Empathy andregulation of emotions ●Techniques to calm and focus themind ● Communication skills ●Display grit and determinationStudents who are taught, andmake use of, mindfulness andmindful practices suffer from lessstress, become more socially aware;they are able to better managestressful situations and able to carryon their work loads with more ease.Regulate emotions such asimpulses, aggression, and self-destructive behaviors. Grades 11, 12 Tomorrow’s Teachers isan elective course for high schooljuniors and seniors who aspire tobecome teachers and wasdeveloped by the Center forEducation, Recruitment, Retentionand Advancement (CERRA).Tomorrow’s Teachers is aninnovative course designed toattract talented young people whopossess exemplary interpersonaland leadership skills to consider acareer in teaching. The programseeks to provide high schoolstudents insight into the nature ofteaching, the problems ofschooling, and the critical issuesaffecting the quality of education inAmerica's schools. As such, theprogram also encourages theseaspiring teachers to also becomecommunity leaders with insightsabout teachers and schools thatwill enable them to be advocates ofeducation.
