2021 game notes

This Is It: Today’s game marks the final regular season game for the High Point Rockers in 2021. High Point can still qualify for the playoffs through the wild card, but need the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to lose and the Long Island Ducks to win. The Blue Crabs play the Lexington Legends, and have won the first three games of the series, while the Ducks have won the first two games of their series against the York Revolution. A Blue Crabs win automatically knocks the Rockers out of the playoffs. If the Rockers make the playoffs, they’ll play at the Long Island Ducks in the North Division Championship series on Monday, and play at home on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Another Close One: Going into the ninth inning Saturday night, the Rockers were tied 3-3 with the Lancaster Barnstormers, but Randy Norris lined a single to drive in the game-winning run in a 4-3 Rockers win at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Rockers tallied 14 hits on the night, the most in a game since they had 14 at Gastonia on September 19. They also tallied a hit in eight of their nine innings. Rockers starter Tyler Garkow went on the strikeout tear again, retiring his first five outs via the strikeout and totaled seven before he departed in the fourth. The win was the 24th all-time against the Barnstormers, the most wins against any franchise in Rockers history. Recapping the Year: The Rockers failed to win either half, but hold the second-best overall record in the Atlantic League and best overall record in the South Division. After falling to 18-23 in the first half, the Rockers went on a torrid run to end the half, going 11-6 in their final 17 games to end up at 31-29. In the second half, the Rockers held on to first place for almost three straight weeks, at one point finding themselves three games up after starting the half 18-9. They posted a winning record in every month after going 10-15 in June, going 51-38 since July 1. The Rockers were also one of four teams to win at least 35 games at home, going 35-24. Racking Up the K: With 14 strikeouts during Saturday night’s game, the Rockers pitching staff has struck out at least 10 batters in 10 of their last 13 games. Over that stretch, they’ve set the season-high for the staff with 15 and have struck out 12-plus four times. Since September 25, the Rockers have struck out a league-best 88, more than 15 clear of the nearest team (Charleston, 72). For the Rockers: The Rockers will go with veteran Craig Stem (5-11, 6.97 ERA) in the regular season finale on Sunday. Stem is 1-1 in his last two starts and will be facing Lancaster for just the second time this season. On 6/3, Stem took the loss against the Barnstormers, allowing 10 hits and six runs over 5.0 IP in a 10-3 loss at Truist Point. This will be Stem’s 24th start of the year and tie him with Joe Van Meter (2019) for the franchise record for season starts. For the Barnstormers: LHP Augie Sylk will finish out the year for the Barnstormers on the mound, facing the Rockers in the finale. The lefty is making his 22nd start of the year. His last handul of starts have been shaky, allowing three- plus runs in each of his last eight starts, and allowing five-plus in two of his last three.
