INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS

Grace Lutheran Primary School provides tuition in a range of instruments covering a broad range of musical genres.

All instruments are taught by trained professional

‘Teaching Artists’. We believe in students engaging in

instrumental lessons from a very young age, however,

some instruments are best learnt at a slightly later age due

to the physical demands of ‘blowing’ or fine motor strength. At times a student may be recommended to

begin on a different instrument and transfer their skills

when they are physically ready. Please refer to the table below for instrumental offerings and corresponding age

requirements.

INSTRUMENTS

Instruments are not provided by the school. Families will need to purchase or rent instruments through external

suppliers. Please note that there are many brands and

suppliers of instruments. Some instruments sold on

second hand sites, Aldi etc are not setup for students to

play and often will require substantial investment to get

up to a playing standard. We recommend and use the following suppliers, please click on their logo to head to

their website.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES

Students enrolled in instrumental lessons at GLPS are encouraged to enrich their lessons by playing in one of our

ensembles. Our Band is open to beginning Woodwind, Brass and Percussion students in their first year of private/paired tuition after completing our Year 3

Immersion Program. Senior Band, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Rock Band and Percussion Ensemble are open to students who have been learning their instrument for a

minimum of 6-12 months and dependent on their readiness as determined by the Director of Performing

Arts.

In rehearsals and performances, students learn to play with others, developing musicality, expression, articulation

and musical notation skills whilst being immersed in the sounds of various instruments. The social aspect of

ensemble playing is an integral part of the development of each child. These skills transfer into their social and team

interactions in a variety of settings and build concentration stamina. Instrumental Ensembles are

offered at no additional cost to private and paired lesson enrolment.

Students in ensembles participate in weekly rehearsals, showcase events and assembly performances. They will also perform at community events throughout the year.

(commencing in Term 3).

Choral ensembles are offered at no additional cost.

Students in ensembles participate in weekly rehearsals,

showcase events and assembly performances. They will also perform at community events throughout the year

including important school ceremonies, events and

SPEECH AND DRAMA LESSONS

Speech and Drama classes are made up of a range of drama and voice-related activities designed to improve self-

confidence, communication skills and presentation skills. Classes incorporate monologues, poetry and prose to

engage and inspire students and to foster a love of reading and literature as well as mime, public speaking,

improvisations and acting/dramatics. Students can enrol in either private, paired or small group lessons which

occur during school hours in our studios. Participants have the opportunity to take part in an assortment of

performance opportunities including Speech & Drama Showcases, Eisteddfods and audition preparation.

The 30 minute lessons will provide students with strong foundations for public speaking, building confidence in

speech and drama. Students will also learn theatre skills such as characterisation, improvisation and voice

projection, whilst developing self-confidence and learning about the importance of non-verbal behaviour such as

facial expression, movement and gesture.

Group drama workshops are offered before and after school hours as a part of our Musical Theatre Program.

These workshops provide students with the foundations for the acting craft through role play, character

development, improvisation and develop social skills through interaction with peers and group discussion. These workshops focus on theatre skills such as team

building, improvisation, basic character building and age appropriate text/script analysis.

MUSICAL THEATRE PROGRAM

We have a Musical Theatre Program which caters from Students in Grades 1 through to High School. The Program

consists of three age group structures; • Years 1-3 • Years 4-6 • High School

Students who are excited by musical theatre are

encouraged to apply for our Musical Theatre Programs. These programs are made up of a paired or private singing

lesson with our vocal teacher, a group drama class focusing on theatrical works and skills, and enrolment in

one dance troupe.

Students enrolled in this program have both their dance and drama work outside of class time and have their

paired vocal lesson in class time. Students may be required to supply simple costumes for performances as

communicated by the drama teacher.

Enrolment in the Musical Theatre Program is subject to enrolment numbers and students may be asked to audition

for a position within this program if enrolment numbers are high. Fees for this program is at a discounted rate to

enrolling in each lesson individually, perfect for those students building their triple threat skills in singing, drama

and dance!

Pre-Prep Piano classes are group classes of up to 6 learners. Children learn the foundations of playing piano, singing songs, playing percussion and learning through music and movement. Learners attend classes with one

supervising adult and are taught by one of our piano teachers. Engagement between the caregiver and child at

the piano, enables families to engage in music practice throughout the week, ensuring that music practice is fun,

play based and easily supported at home. This class consists of 30 minutes of focused tuition with an additional

15 minutes of play based instrumental exploration. This enables our young learners to engage in social music

making, developing their language and social skills whilst building new friendships.

Please note that due to the group setting and limited

enrolments of these classes, no makeup lessons are offered in the event of holidays, sickness or inability to attend.
