With its highest peaks located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of north-eastern Pakistan, the Karakoram is part of a complex of Central Asian ranges that includes the Hindu Kush to the west and the Himalayas to the south-east. These mountains, however, are distinctive. This is the most glaciated region on Earth outside the Arctic and Antarctic. Most of the world’s great peaks are almost blanketed in snow and ice, but the Karakoram is an exception: the mountains are so vertical that they rapidly shed snow, leaving their jagged granite outlines glistening in the sun. The name of the range comes from the Altaic term for ‘black gravel’ or ‘black pass’. The renowned landscape photographer Colin Prior was initially inspired to visit the Karakoram in his early twenties after being captivated by images in a library book of the fractured peaks and vast glaciers, and he has been passionate about these mountains since his first trip in the mid-1990s. His new book is the result of a fur ther five expeditions to the region. Because the range is so remote, each trip requires careful planning and miles of trekking with a team of porters and ponies. This elegantly produced volume showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Karakoram in 90 duotone and colour photographs. The images are accompanied by well-chosen quotations from historical accounts of early expeditions. The writer and film-maker Mick Conefrey contributes an essay on the importance of photography to mountaineering.

American art underwent a transformation in the period 1940–55, and nowhere is that change better exemplified than in the work of Ralston Crawford (1906–1978). Crawford’s painting during the 1930s had largely been a series of dazzling Precisionist works that reflected advances in industry and engineering. After the United States entered World War II, Crawford served in the Weather Division of the Army Air Forces. He created pictorial representations of weather patterns for pilots, and was exposed to countless photographs of air crashes. He continued working as an ar tist throughout the conflict, receiving a commission to paint the Curtiss-Wright aircraft plant in Buffalo, New York, and, in 1946, an assignment from Fortune magazine to document one of the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. These experiences had a profound impact on Crawford, and marked a major turning point in his life and art. This exciting new book presents a remarkable selection of Crawford’s paintings, drawings, photographs and prints from this pivotal time. Accompanying the ar tworks are five perceptive essays that consider Crawford’s war years in the context of developments in both aviation and American art; the evolution of his aerial imagery; his visual storytelling, particularly his work for Fortune; his use of photography and lithography; and early 20th-century paintings of aircraft and flight as a means by which to explore how aviation redefined our understanding of air, space and war.
