St. Ferdinand and St. Ladislaus Renew My Church Update January 23, 2021

Discernment Process St. Ferdinand and St. Ladislaus Parishes engaged in the Renew My Church (RMC) discernment process through the fall of 2020. The Grouping Feedback and Discernment team (GFDT), which was made up of members from each parish community, met to review and discern the future parish structure for the area. Our deepest apprecia on goes to the GFDT who prayerfully discerned the parish grouping structure during this challenging me. Based on their mee ngs and feedback gathered from the larger parish communi es, they submi ed feedback to the archdiocese. The Archdiocesan Standards and Recommenda ons Commission, which includes representa ves from across the Archdiocese of Chicago, reviewed the feedback and other informa on, including financial summaries, capital needs and parish trends. Cardinal Cupich and Bishop Manz are grateful to Fr. Torba, Fr. Ludwicki and the Grouping Teams who gathered throughout the past few months, and all parishioners who offered feedback through the recent discernment process. Outcome In the past few weeks, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, the archdiocese’s auxiliary bishops, and the archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council met to discuss the Commission’s recommenda on. Based upon those discussions and prayerful considera on, Cardinal Cupich made the following decisions regarding the parish structure for St. Ferdinand and St. Ladislaus:

The two parishes will remain separate parishes at the current me. The parish structure will be reviewed again in 2024 during the fi h year of the Society of Christ’s six-year contract to lead

St. Ladislaus Parish. St. Ferdinand School will con nue to serve as the parish school of St. Ferdinand Parish.

Between now and the formal review in 2024, both communi es are called to not only build a culture of evangeliza on within each parish by building Evangeliza on Teams, but also build a culture of invita on that is inherent to the meaning of evangeliza on. Reaching our neighbors first and foremost is where our outreach begins. Parish Structure Ra onale Each of the current parishes surpasses the RMC benchmarks around Mass a endance and meets its financial obliga ons. However, concerns were noted through the process about the long-term future of the parishes if stronger outreach to young adults and the local neighborhood does not bear fruit. With the Society of Christ’s commitment to fulfill their six-year contract at St. Ladislaus, se ng a formal review in 2024 will allow a fresh look at what will be needed at that me. Next Steps Each parish community will embark upon the next phase of renewal, focusing on strong evangeliza on to the world around us. The renewal process calls us to become a stronger, more sustainable presence for the future, capable of reaching more people in their work of making disciples of Jesus Christ, building communi es with one another and inspiring witness in the world around us.

Please Make Your Gift to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world

Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.” This is especially important during these trying and challenging times. Many in our parishes are affected financially by the pandemic, and we encourage giving at all levels to support this initiative. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Annual Catholic Appeal funds services in our own parish.

When we financially support the work of our parish, our archdiocese and the Catholic Church throughout the world, we experience a feeling of deep gratitude, especially when we contemplate God’s many gifts to us personally. By sharing our wealth through gifts to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal, we demonstrate our commitment to the Church and each other.

To make your gift, you can complete the mail-in giving envelope available at church or make a gift online at annualcatholicappeal.com

Parafia św. Ferdynanda i św. Władysława, Odnów Mój Kościół, Informacja z 23 stycznia 2021 roku

Etap rozeznawania Jesienią 2020 roku, w ramach inicjatywy Odnów Mój Kościół parafie św. Ferdynanda i św. Władysława zaangażowały się w proces rozeznawania. Komisja ds. Rozeznawania i Opinii, w skład której weszli członkowie z każdej parafii, spotkała się, aby omówić i rozeznać przyszłą strukturę parafii w naszym obszarze. Kardynał Cupich i biskup Manz składają swoje podziękowania ks. Torbie i ks. Ferdynanda i św.

Święto Ofiarowania Pańskiego wprowadził papież Gelazy I (zm. 496 r.).

Święto to zamyka cykl świąt Bożego Narodzenia.

PIERWSZY PIĄTEK MIESIĄCA Najbliższy piątek, 5 lutego to Pierwszy Piątek miesiąca. Spowiedź święta od godz. 6:00PM do 7:00PM. Msza św. o godz. 7:00.

  • ON UNANSWERED QUESTIONS, CHILDREN’S GAMES, AND PROPHETS AMONG US

Copyright 2021 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) On the third Sunday of Advent, the Gospel passage had

the religious elite of the day ques oning John the Bap st. “Who are you?” the priests and Levites begin. John answers, “I am not the Christ.” They con nue: “…Are you Elijah?” John responds, “I am not.” Then they ask, “Are you the Prophet?” John says no again. Finally, they ask, “Why then do you bap ze if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” So… Who is the Prophet?

John answers (“I am the voice of one crying out in the desert…” and “I bap ze with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize…”), but doesn’t ID the person in ques on. And I bring it up now because Moses in today’s first reading may be poin ng to the answer. Which is not to say he gives the answer, but were there a Scripture scholar in the house who knows the old children’s game, he or she might be telling me even now, “You’re ge ng warmer…”

Warmer because the footnote in my Bible re: last month’s reading says that the Prophet is “probably the prophet like Moses” and refers me to today’s first reading. Here, Moses says to the Israelites, “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin…” (Moses explains that this is exactly what the Israelites had asked God to do for them, and that God had indeed responded, “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin”). So, “Warmer…”

Warmer because the (Prophet) footnote on today’s

reading sends me to Acts, where Peter speaks of Jesus’s dying and rising and encourages faith in the Christ, saying, “For Moses said, ‘A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsman…” And per the footnote on that passage, “At the me of Jesus, some Jews expected a unique prophet to come. Early Chris anity applied this tradi on and text to Jesus…” So, Jesus is the Prophet! Or maybe, “Colder…”

Colder because the (Prophet) footnote in my Book on today’s first reading also says this: “It seems that Moses is referring in general to all the true prophets who were to succeed him…” Hence, maybe the Prophet is not the Christ. Even with this, however, the footnote adds “…since Christ is the Great Prophet in whom the prophe c office finds it fulfillment…this passage was understood in a special Messianic sense both by the Jews and by the Apostles.” So, seems that at least some label Jesus as the Prophet.

But you know what I think? I think that each of us is the Prophet! “Warmer…” I think that Jesus’s first miracle as noted by Mark in today’s Gospel--the cure of a demoniac--defines Jesus’s en re “prophe c office” (to quote a footnote): namely, the eradica on of evil. “Warmer…” Aren’t we called to be Christ for one another? Aren’t we called to oppose evil? I think that on our best days, then, we are the Prophet that God said he would send. I think that on our best days, that very Prophet is us! Remember, though. I’m no Scripture scholar. I only call ‘em like I see ‘em. “Hot!”
