MON 27TH JULY - WED 29TH JULY NATIONAL BROODMARE SALE: SALE LIVE - VIEW HERE
James Harron yesterday seized the rare
opportunity to access the family of elite
stallion Pierro (Lonhro), a champion
racehorse who helped establish the
bloodstock agent’s career, by surpassing
the million dollar mark in order to secure the
Coolmore banner sire’s sister at the Gold Coast
yesterday.
The top-priced offering on day two of the
Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at
$1.05 million was the fifth seven-figure lot
of the southern hemisphere’s pre-eminent
breeding stock auction with the possibility of
further additions today.
Right Chord (Lonhro) added her name

“She’s a very exciting mare and she’s
obviously quite a rare commodity and Pierro is doing an incredible job at
stud,” Harron said.
“I’ve been lucky to be quite closely associated with Pierro through
the Kolivos family, so I was really excited to see this mare. She’s such a
beautiful type and I think she’s in foal to the perfect mating in Exceed And
Excel.”
Offered by Godolphin as Lot 384, Right Chord is not only a sister to
Pierro but also a half-sister to the three-time Group 1-placed Wakeful
Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Ambience (Street Cry) and two other winners.
She is also the most expensive horse Godolphin has sold at public
auction in Australia.
“It’s a premium family, as
evidenced, and we do have a
lot of sisters and half-sisters to
Pierro, but having said that, our
view was to expose a branch
of the family to the market,”
Godolphin Australia managing
director Vin Cox told ANZ
Bloodstock News.
“They become partners with
us in the pedigree, their IP is
valuable to us and they are obviously going to invest very heavily in the
mare and, together, we might be able to keep building the pedigree. That
was part of our thinking for selling.”
Harron said a mating for the 2020 breeding season would be determined
once the Magic Millions sale was completed.

“The page is outstanding and there’s a
lot of fillies in the Godolphin system being bred to the best stallions in
the country and they are being trained by one of the best trainers in the
country (James Cummings), so we can look forward to lots of updates,”
the respected agent said.
“With Pierro, he is just kicking so many goals for a young
stallion, so she was a must-have and once we saw her, we fell in love
with her.”
Harron said the first two days of selling had been “robust” while Cox,
the former managing director of Magic Millions, believes the global nature
of the thoroughbred industry had again been to the fore.
Cox said: “People can pick up a pedigree, whether they’re in Kentucky
or Newmarket in England or Ireland or here in Australia. You recognise
the pedigrees, you know the sires, so it is an international product.
“The fact that we can all compete and participate in each other’s
markets is a wonderful thing.
“We’re very fortunate here in Australia that we have a very strong
racing industry, a very strong breeding industry and also a very young
industry.
“Our participants are young, as evidenced by James Harron, one of
the younger guys in our industry. He has a magnificent business and
congratulations to him on his success and we wish him well with the
purchase of Right Chord.”
Yarraman keeps hold of young Pins mare Mark Two
Also yesterday, Yarraman Park joined forces with Magic Millions
supremo and retail king Gerry Harvey to ensure that young stakes-winning
New Zealand mare Mark Two (Pins), who is in foal to the Mitchell family’s
star sire, I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), remained at the Hunter Valley
farm.

James Mitchell of Mitchell Bloodstock
handled the bidding process on the new partnership’s behalf, going to
$600,000 to secure the rising six-year-old mare who was owned during
her on-track career by Kiwi syndicator Go Racing and trained by Stephen
Marsh.
“It was a partnership and the partner wanted to sell out, so the way it’s
fallen is that Yarraman will stay in with Gerry Harvey as the other partner,”
Arthur Mitchell said.
“She’s a nice young mare with good form and a nice pedigree, so if she
has a nice I Am Invincible or two, she’ll be fine. She’s a lovely mare.
“I think she’s perfect and Pins is also shaping up as a very good
broodmare sire, so I think it will
be a fine (mating).”
Catalogued as Lot 304, Mark
Two is a Group 2-placed sister
to the Group 3 winner Whistling
Dixie and a half-sister to Victory
Magic (Savabeel), who was
runner-up in the Hong Kong
Derby (Gr 1, 2000m).
She was purchased
privately off the track in New
Zealand before being sent to
the Hunter Valley and covered by I Am Invincible in her maiden season
at stud.
The same Yarraman-Harvey partnership combined at last year’s sale
to buy Set To Unleash (Reset), the dam of Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL,
1200m) winner Houtzen (I Am Invincible), for $900,000.
Set To Unleash had a sister to the former Toby Edmonds-trained
Houtzen last September.
Arthur Mitchell believed the price tag realised for Mark Two yesterday
was “about the money”.
“I think the nicer ones are selling well and the lesser ones probably
aren’t but there aren’t that many top-quality mares here,” he said.
A List’s Lee takes shine to PecansGold Coast-based Chris Lee’s bid to upgrade the quality of his growing
broodmare band received a big boost yesterday with the acquisition of the
dual Group-winning mare Pecans (Skilled) for $560,000.
Sold in foal to Pierro (Lonhro), the rising six-year-old has a date with
I Am Invincible this year as Lee ups his Australian breeding interests to
enable him to become a major player at the country’s select sales.
Pecans, who was consigned by Yarraman Park Stud as Lot 357, was
purchased for $405,000 by Australian Bloodstock and the Brave Smash
partnership at last year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale before being covered in
her maiden season by Pierro.
SHE’S A NICE YOUNG MARE WITH GOOD FORM AND A NICE PEDIGREE, SO IF SHE HAS A NICE I AM INVINCIBLE OR TWO, SHE’LL BE FINE. SHE’S A LOVELY MARE- ARTHUR MITCHELL

Continuing the trading windfall
that Pecans has been since being offloaded by Godolphin in 2017, the
daughter of Skilled (Commands) was bought for $50,000 by Tricolours
Syndications at the Inglis August Thoroughbred Sale and transferred to
Sydney trainer Joe Pride.
A half-sister to the Listed-winning juvenile Secession (Lonhro) and
the Group 2-placed two-year-old Purdey (Lonhro), Pecans went on to take
out the Belle Of The Turf Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) and the Hawkesbury
Crown (Gr 3, 1300m) before being resold.
“Pecans will really help and strengthen the A List broodmare band
and keep increasing the mare quality, which is why I purchased this
mare,” Lee said.
“I also have a good association with Darley, which is why this mare
appealed to me. I think the price represents value, considering she is in
foal to a stallion like Pierro and I am really happy.”
Yulong, meanwhile, showed no signs of slowing down on day two,
purchasing the first lot through the ring for $400,000 after securing $2.75
million mare Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) on Monday.
A noted acquirer of Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mares, Yulong principal
Yuesheng Zhang bought a mare by the late champion Cambridge Stud
sire, the five-time winner Glitzabeel and dam of Australasian Oaks (Gr 1,
2000m) victor Princess Jenni (High Chaparral). Catalogued as Lot 223, she
was sold in foal to Pierro by Bhima Thoroughbreds.
Later, Mr Zhang, bidding online, went to $575,000 for the Group
2-placed mare Storytime (Savabeel), who is in foal to I Am Invincible.
She was sold by Yarraman Park as Lot 455 inside the final half an hour
of the session.
Glitzabeel and Storytime will be covered by either Grunt (O’Reilly) or
Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice), the two Yulong resident stallions
this year.
Lot 342 Notre DameBreeding: Exceed and Excel - Divine Madonna by Hurricane Sky
Covering sire: Street Boss
Price: $320,000
Buyer: Musk Creek Farm/Boomer Bloodstock
Vendor: Godolphin
Musk Creek Farm and Boomer Bloodstock went to $320,000
yesterday to secure the unraced Notre Dame (Exceed And Excel),
who was the only mare offered at the sale in foal to in form Darley
sire Street Boss (Street Cry). “We thought she would go for about
$300,000, maybe a bit more and I’m stuck in Victoria, but from all
reports she’s a very good mare,” Musk Creek Farm manager Scott
Williamson said. “We’re quite a big fan of Street Boss and obviously
with the likes of Hanseatic still to come out as a three-year-old it’s
exciting times. He’s a very good, consistent stallion so we’re happy,
for sure. It’s still pretty fresh so we’ll sit down in the coming days and
hash out a mating. We’ve got a little bit of time as she’s about four
weeks away from foaling, but we’ll be looking at some of the nice
stallions in the Hunter Valley.”
Sunlight’s sibling to visit ZoustarCoolmore took home Sunlight for the massive sum on Monday and
it was left to James Bester to handle the purchase of her older half-sister
Solar Girl (Lonhro), who was signed for by the South African agent on
behalf of Sheikh Bin Khalifa and his advisor Tim Stakemire.
Offered in foal to first season sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice)
by Arrowfield Stud, the raced Solar Girl made $500,000 late in the session.
Bester confirmed that Solar Girl, understandably, would be covered
by Widden Stud’s champion first season sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor)
this year.
He had inspected the mare, who was sold in absentia, in the Hunter
Valley and was happy to endorse her prospects when his opinion was
sought by Stakemire.
“At that kind of price we think she is very well bought. There was
always the possibility that she could have cost more than that, but
obviously Sunlight with all her Group 1 wins was a different kettle of fish,”
the experienced Bester said.
“But she is an attractive mare and we were banking on the fact that she
wasn’t on the complex.
“The Autumn Sun (mating) was an attractive prospect, for sure. He is
likely to be a highly sought after first-season sire when this foal comes to
be sold - so my word that played a part.” Lot 357 Pecans MAGIC MILLIONS

FIRST WEANLINGSselling at Magic Millions
Solar Girl has a rising two-year-
old by Scissor Kick (Redoute’s Choice), who made $55,000 at the Inglis
Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale earlier this year.
Bester did not stop with Solar Girl, having earlier landed Santa Clara
(Foxwedge), the half-sister to New Zealand juvenile Group 1 winner Anabandana
(Anabaa) and AJC Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Gybe (Fastnet Rock).
Bester went to $190,000 to purchase
the Willow Park Stud-consigned
mare, who is in foal to “my favourite
stallion Justify”. Santa Clara was
catalogued as Lot 400.
“Again, I had inspected her
on the farm and actually noticed
she had a first foal by Sebring
that was outstanding. That is the
benefit of doing the pre-sale on
farm inspections and those were
the two I bought today,” Bester
said.
After a strong day one race
fillies and mares session, many
vendors had to work harder to
sell their in-foal stock yesterday outside those with horses deemed to be
of high quality.
“It has been patchy and very difficult to buy top-of-the-market-type
horses and I would imagine there are vendors out there who have found it
hard going,” Bester said.
“So many of us buy on spec, so horses that may not appeal to us on
catalogue, when you are at a sale the horses are on the complex and word
gets around and you can dart over and have a look at it and that helps a lot.
“This is one of the disadvantages (of the Covid-19 pandemic) at the
moment, but we need to be grateful and I think, given the circumstances,
it is holding up really well.”
Bowditch content with outcome of day twoDespite the sentiment and requirement for quality, those who have
met the market and been willing to trade have led to, all things considered,
reasonable and perhaps surprisingly positive figures, which has also been
borne out in recent Inglis and online breeding stock sales.
Last night, the average was sitting at $149,144, up 1.49 per cent on
2019, while the median was at $60,000, a decrease of $10,000 on the same
session last year. The clearance rate was at 72 per cent.
“It is hard to have clear expectations in the current times, but I thought
vendors on the whole did their best to meet the market,” Magic Millions
managing director Barry Bowditch said.
“There are a lot of opportunities for buyers. A lot of these horses have
got good covers and they are young mares and I expect anyone keeping
their lists long at this sale will have a (good chance of achieving a) fruitful
outcome in years to come.”

The number of mares sold in absentia,
as alluded to by Bester and others, added to the uncertainty of the marketplace
but Bowditch was still satisfied with how many lots found new homes.
“All in all, when you look at the figures and what the good mares made
today, I would have thought the vendors of those in absentia mares would
be pleased with the outcomes.
“The average is healthy and there are plenty of buyers here that have
got money to spend here on the right product and a lot of it is still in their
pockets, which bodes well for (today),
“For the guys that are bidding online and doing their research
and getting amongst it, I
think there is value and lots of

Group 1 winner Viddora (I Am

Montefilia on path to OaksDavid Payne has nominated Montefilia
(Kermadec) for the opening day of the season in
the hope that she can bolster her rating before
she heads on a campaign aimed at the VRC Oaks
(Gr 1, 2500m) in November. Montefilia, a maiden
winner at Newcastle in March before finishing
fourth behind Holyfield (I Am Invincible) in the
Schweppervescence Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m),
returned with a closing third in a 1400-metre
handicap on Randwick’s Kensington track on July
18. "If you look at the way the track was playing,
I think she was one of the best runs of the day,"
Payne said. "She can only improve on that run.
She's very smart. I've got quite a high opinion of
her. Her long-term aim is the Oaks. I just want to
get her qualified and then I'll give her a couple of
weeks in the paddock and then program for that
race, all going well.”
Brandenburg trials ahead of Winx assignment
While most horses assigned to Group and
Listed trials at Randwick yesterday will wait for
the rescheduled set on the Kensington track on
Friday, the John Sargent-trained Brandenburg
(Burgundy) instead took to the Polytrack for
a trial yesterday, finishing fourth over 1080
metres. Sargent said that a hit-out yesterday
fit better into his program, with another trial
scheduled for two weeks as the trainer attempts
to follow a similar path into the Winx Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m) that resulted in Brandenburg’s first-
up win in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
last preparation. "He just had a nice quiet trial
like he did last time," Sargent said. "He was very
fresh early in the trial and Hugh just sat on him
up the straight and was happy with him. He
pulled up with a big blow so he's on track for
where we're going."
Adkins to return next yearAndrew Adkins is facing more than six months
on the sidelines after his nasty fall at Rosehill
on Saturday. Adkins is in a high dependency
ward at Westmead Hospital, having had a rod
put in his tibia, a plate placed in his clavicle and
a tube inserted into his lung, which was set to
be removed yesterday; he also suffered eight
broken ribs. "He is on the road to recovery,
which is really good news," Racing NSW’s Dr
David Duckworth told RSN927. "His spirits
are reasonable considering what he has been
through. He knows it's a long road back to
recovery, which he will do because he's a pretty
determined guy. It will be a good six months
until he is back on a horse again, but he will get
over (his injuries) in the long term and he will
be able to ride again.”
Glenn confirmed as new Dashing Willoughby ownerProminent New Zealand owner Sir Owen Glenn
has taken a majority share in English stayer
Dashing Willoughby (Nathaniel) under his Go
Bloodstock banner. The acquisition of Dashing
Willoughby was reported earlier this week, but
Glenn - who has raced horses like Criterion
(Sebring), Monaco Consul (High Chaparral)
and Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock) in his
yellow silks - yesterday confirmed he was the
buyer. “Sir Owen is as determined as ever for Go
Bloodstock to target the top races in Australia,”
Go Bloodstock’s Steve O’Connor said. “Having
placed in the Melbourne Cup previously with
both Criterion and Second Coming, Sir Owen
was the driving force behind selecting Dashing
Willoughby as a Cup contender this year and
a horse to represent Go Bloodstock at the
top level for many years to come. We are very
excited by Dashing Willoughby and would like
to thank all agents, vets and anyone who played
a role in securing the horse, with a special
mention to long-time friend Paul Moroney who
assisted in sourcing and securing the horse on
our behalf with Armando Duarte Bloodstock.”
Magnier hopes Ballydoyle raiders a spring factorCoolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier
hopes that their Irish racing arm Ballydoyle will
be represented during the spring carnival, with
the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) a top priority.
"We'll work with whatever we're told we can
do," Magnier told RSN927. "We have a very
good team at Ballydoyle and Coolmore would
love to bring all the staff out. Logistically we're
not sure what's going on at the moment. If we
can get the people, the horses and the jockeys
out here we will, but it's a bit of an unknown at
this stage. We've never won a Melbourne Cup
and we're keen to get one of those obviously.
We'll talk to Aidan and try to get the best team
possible to come down here and all being well
we would like to bring down a big team this
year. If we get the green light to go, we'll be big
supporters of the spring carnival."

Age no barrier for Chop Three-time Group 1 winner Gailo Chop
(Deportivo) is set to return once more this
spring, with trainer Matthew Williams
confident that he can still perform as a ten-
year-old. Gailo Chop ran second in the
Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) in Perth
but struggled in Sydney during the autumn,
with Williams putting it down to struggling
on heavy tracks as he’s become more battle-
weary. "Down at the beach he's like riding
a three-year-old. You certainly have to keep
your guard up, he's still very active and (if )
someone comes running down a set of stairs
or something he will be the first one on to it,"
Williams told Racing.com. "He will head to
the Makybe (Diva) Stakes, kick off there, and
that will be a conditioning run for him. It will
be too short at the mile and then he can head
to the Underwood and the Caulfield Stakes,
he ran terrific in both races last year."
Whiteley suspended for two monthsLeading north Queensland rider Chris
Whiteley has been suspended for two months
after his beaten ride aboard a favourite at
Cairns last month. Silent Explorer (Lope De
Vega) was sent out as the $1.30 favourite in
a seven-runner open handicap on June 25,
but after jumping first from the gates, he was
restrained to near the rear by Whiteley. He
flew home but finished second, a half-length
behind leader Tambo’s Heart (Show A Heart).
Whiteley was found guilty of failing to take
all reasonable and permissible measures
to ensure Silent Explorer was given every
opportunity to win or to obtain the best
possible place in the field and was suspended
from August 4 to October 4.
Albury trainer banned for Covid breachTrainer Laura McCullum has been disqualified
for four months after providing misleading
information about a potential Covid-19 breach.
McCullum was interviewed by Southern
District chief steward Jason Shultz on June 22
about whether the Albury trainer had crossed
into Victoria to attend trackwork at Wodonga
racecourse. It was determined that she had
provided evidence she knew to be false.
McCullum pled guilty and, with her personal
circumstances taken into account, she was
suspended from July 24 until November 24.
Booker injured in training incidentTrainer John Booker was in a stable condition
but in intensive care yesterday after sustaining
a kick to the head while working horses at his
property in Kempsey. Booker, who trains a
small string, was taken to Newcastle’s John
Hunter Hospital yesterday morning.
NEW ZEALAND
Spring Carnival up in the air for New Zealand trainersMultiple Group 1 winner The Bostonian (Jimmy
Choux) is set to head to Sydney next month,
but whether he will race under trainer Tony
Pike’s name is still up in the air. The Cambridge
trainer, who also heads the New Zealand
Trainers’ Association, has been in discussions
with an Australian immigration expert,
however, there is still no clarity as to whether
any of his staff members can gain an exemption
to enter Australia. “At this stage there are no
problems in getting the horses across, but with
what has been happening in Victoria of late the
Government has probably got a little bit edgy
and things aren’t moving quite as quick as we
were hoping,” Pike told RSN927. “We are getting
closer to the spring carnival and if or when we
can get over is the million dollar question at this
point in time.”
INTERNATIONAL
History made at GoodwoodStradivarius (6h Sea The Stars - Private Life
by Bering) became the first horse to win the
Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) four times on
Tuesday when overcoming trouble in running
and seeing off Nayef Road (Galileo) into second
and Santiago (Authorized) in third. The six-
year-old entire is bred and raced by Bjorn
Nielsen, who nominated the Prix Foy (Gr 2,
1m4f) and then the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
(Gr 1, 1m4f) as likely targets for his star stayer
this season. Stradivarius is one of 13 elite
winners by Gilltown Stud stallion Sea The Stars
(Cape Cross), who commanded a career-high
fee of €150,000 this year.
Battleground flies home in VintageBattleground (2c War Front - Found by Galileo),
the first foal out of Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
(Gr 1, 1m4f) heroine Found, marked himself
out as one of the best juveniles this season
when landing the Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at
Goodwood on Tuesday, leading home Devious
Company (Fast Company) in second and
Youth Spirit (Camelot) in third. The Coolmore
homebred was following up on his win the
Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Royal Ascot
last month. He is the second son of War Front
(Danzig) to win the Vintage Stakes after War
Decree in 2016, with the latter now standing at
Inglewood Stud in New Zealand at a NZ$4,500
fee (plus GST).
Space Blues leaves rivals behind in LennoxSpace Blues (4c Dubawi - Miss Lucifer by
Noverre) recorded his fourth stakes win
and sixth overall in the Lennox Stakes (Gr
2, 7f) at Goodwood on Tuesday, with Duke
Of Hazzard (Lope De Vega) in second and
Escobar (Famous Name) in third. The four-
year-old Godolphin homebred shares his great-
granddam, High Spirited (Shirley Height), with
the 2012 Lennox Stakes winner Chachamaidee
(Footstepsinthesand), and is out of the
Challenge Stakes scorer Miss Lucifer, also the
dam of Group 2-winning miler Shuruq (Elusive
Quality). Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) - the sire
of 42 elite winners worldwide - has commanded
a £250,000 fee at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in
Newmarket for the past four seasons.

BY GEORGIE DENNIS
New Zealand Bloodstock
managing director Andrew
Seabrook yesterday confirmed
that the date for the 2021
National Yearling Sales at Karaka will be
announced on August 31.
In a statement released yesterday, the
auction house said that if there are no updates
as to whether Australian borders will reopen in
time for the regular January timeslot, then the
sale would be rescheduled for April.
“On behalf of New Zealand Bloodstock,
I would like to give you a further update on
the 2021 National Yearling Sales at Karaka,”
Seabrook said in the statement sent out by
the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Association
(NZTBA). “We believe that a trans-Tasman
bubble is very important to the success of
the Sale, and given the current outbreaks of
COVID-19 in Victoria, a January Sale is looking
more and more unlikely.
“After consulting a number of major
breeders over the past few weeks and to give
everyone some clarity going forward, we will be
deciding the date of the Sale on August 31.
“If by August 31, there is no likelihood of
our borders opening with Australia in January,
we will move the National Yearling Sales to the

Karaka sales ring NZB
week beginning Monday, April 19. Our NZB
representatives continue to canvas trainers,
owners and agents across Australia, all of whom
have been enthusiastic about attending our
Sale should it be in April.”
Seabrook called for the support of
the industry and added that if the sale is
rescheduled to April, NZB will hold an online
yearling sale at the end of January.
“If we move our sales to April, I can assure
you that we will be doing our absolute best to
achieve great results,” he said. “But we need
your support. We need as strong a catalogue as
we possibly can to get the best buying bench to
Karaka, physically and virtually.
“Our ability to assemble a strong buying
bench will be affected if we lose top end
yearlings to overseas sales companies. This in
turn will have a negative impact on your other
horses being sold at Karaka.
“So when deciding on where to sell your
yearlings, think about the aggregate of your
draft, not the average.”
New Zealand Bloodstock will also waive all
offering fees at the 2021 yearling sales in order
to support breeders and vendors.
“These are uncertain times for everyone
I know, so as a gesture of goodwill to all our
clients, New Zealand Bloodstock is going to
waive all offering fees at the 2021 Yearling
Sales,” Seabrook said.
“We are confident that we will make a
well-considered decision around the date of
our National Yearling Sale, that along with
our improvements in technology and online
bidding services will achieve the best possible
results for you and your yearlings.”

VERDICT Three silver medals leave SIGNIFICANTLY still in search ofgold but he shaped very well in a Listed race last time and looks
to have a good prize in him. He can go one better, perhaps at the main expense ofuseful filly Sardinia Sunset and the promising Steel Bull.[Steve Boow]

VERDICT This year’s Sussex Stakes is a crackerjack that has attracted twoClassic-winning 3yos and at least two very talented 4yos.
MOHAATHER, who was mightily impressive in the Summer Mile and has plentymore left in the tank, is taken to burst Siskin’s bubble and also fend off 2,000Guineas winner Kameko. Whatever the result, it should be a tremendous race towatch.[Steve Boow]
