Dear Friends,

It is impossible to adequately thank our donors for their extraordinary

support in 2020. COVID-19 hit Nantucket in full force last March,

creating immediate and overwhelming need, and our donors’ support

allowed the Community Foundation to respond immediately.

Our ability to help Nantucket’s nonprofits in the vital work they do

is dependent upon our donors. Our team was inundated with an

unprecedented number of requests for help, and in true Nantucket

fashion, an equal number of offers to help. Throughout this report,

we highlight our activities, including a remarkable $2 million plus of

grant-making through our Emergency Relief Fund awarded last year.

Our work is ongoing as we all navigate what we hope is a return to

some sort of normalcy. It became very clear through the pandemic

that there have been unmet needs in our community for some time.

Our goal going forward is to identify and address those areas of

concern to make long-lasting change on the Island.

We are greatly appreciative of the outpouring of assistance we

received last year and very proud of our work.

FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF

Although 30 miles out at sea, the island of Nantucket and its residents felt the deep

impact of the COVID-19 crisis in 2020. New and emerging needs surfaced with a

velocity no one anticipated. Existing challenges intensified. The Nantucket Fund for

Emergency Relief was created last March in response to the rapidly developing effects

of the pandemic on the people of the island, businesses and nonprofits.

In 2020, the Foundation awarded over $2 million in Emergency Relief grants directed

to food, rental assistance, child care and mental health. The chart below highlights

these and other areas of need that came before the Foundation through December

of last year and the total category awards: From March through December, we funded over 9,800 meals.

Arts & Culture: 10%

An anonymous donation to the Nantucket Fund for Emergency

Relief was made to address food insecurity. This donation and

others allowed qualified nonprofits to purchase meals from local

restaurants for their constituents, congregation or members and

be reimbursed through the Fund.

This past year we could not have survived without the Community Foundation for Nantucket’s help as our requests for assistance tripled since last March. We could never have served so many islanders were it not for CFN’s help, guidance, and moral support. The CFN and their Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief is a treasure that the island nonprofits and Island residents are so lucky to have.

Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, we were very impressed with how quickly

CFN assessed the impact of the pandemic on our community, prioritized the

various needs, coordinated with the local nonprofits, and galvanized forces to

distribute much needed support to the local organizations providing essential

services to our community. This is why we donated to the Nantucket Fund for

Emergency Relief. We knew our donation would make a difference and help

those in need during the pandemic.

The Nantucket Fund is the permanent endowment for the Island of

Nantucket and awards annual grants to vital organizations providing

critical services. In 2020, we awarded $185,000 in grants supporting

everything from pre-kindergarten readiness programs to accessible

summer camps for children with disabilities, trauma therapy programs

and affordable housing initiatives.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we have not lost sight of our ongoing

commitment to endow the Nantucket Fund™. Generous donations to

the Nantucket Fund make annual grants possible, and in 2020 we are

over halfway to our goal to establish an endowment of $10 million.

In 2020, members of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital

Community Health Initiative unanimously agreed to

award one large grant through their CFN fund rather

than the many individual grants that had been awarded

in previous years. The Nantucket Emergency Medical

Travel Fund at the Community Foundation was

created through a generous $500,000 grant. This

vital endowed resource will be managed by the staff

at Nantucket Food, Fuel and Rental Assistance to

support emergency medical travel and related

services for Island residents.

Faregrounds has developed a great working

relationship with the Community Foundation

for Nantucket. CFN quickly found a way

to support a community in need and the

businesses that had been shut down. The

Nantucket Fund for Emergency Relief Food

beneficial to all parties involved. Faregrounds

was partnered with Fairwinds Counseling

Center and The Landmark House, and we

have become invested in these organizations.
