Customers are asking question about sustainability
but there are many definitions of sustainability used in the agriculture and food industry. A Canadian approach will permit us to define sustainability consistent with market demands but
reflective of modern grain farming.
Our competitors have a sustainability brand
U.S., Australia, Argentina, Brazil, for exampleEarly signs of success in using sustainability to gain market advantage (soybeans from US to
Japan and Korea)Many focused-on soybeans, but Australia including wheat and other oilseeds as well
Misinformation can create market access and public trust issues
“Canada is in danger of deforestation and agriculture is a main contributor”.
![Page 40: 2020 Western Canadian Wheat](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012807/61bd487761276e740b113f1d/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)

Participation by farmers is voluntary,The more farmers that adopt and support Responsible Grain
practices, the stronger the program and Canada’s reputation will
be with consumers and customers
Responsible Grain practices will not be tracked at the farm level.
Adoption of the practices will be measured over time via the
CRSC Metrics Platform by analyzing aggregate data at a
national or provincial level.

Major Canadian Wheat Classes
CWRS
Canada Western Red Spring
A hard wheat with high protein and
superior milling and baking
characteristics. Ideal for high-volume
hearth-style, pan and flat breads,
noodles and Asian product
applications.
CWAD
Canada Western Amber Durum
High protein content, strong and
extensible gluten, high semolina yield
and superior yellow color make CWAD
ideal for couscous, as well as dried
and fresh pasta, and hearth-style,
artisan and flat breads.
CPSR
Canada Prairie Spring Red
CPSR’s medium protein content,
medium kernel hardness and excellent
flour yields make it ideal for hearth-
style, pan and flat breads, crackers,
instant noodles and white salted
noodles.
CESRW
Canada Eastern Soft Red Winter
Grown largely in Ontario, with
additional production in Quebec and
the Atlantic provinces, CESRW’s lower
protein content is ideally suited for
cakes, pastry, cereal, crackers,
biscuits and filling.

2020 Growing Season
Seeding
▪ Cool spring temperatures resulted in a
slow start to seeding.
▪ Temperatures improved and dry
conditions accelerated field work.
▪ The crop’s establishment was
supported by good ground moisture and
well-timed rains.
Summer
▪ Generally good weather conditions
continued throughout the summer.
▪ Growing conditions were positive in
most areas.
▪ Some pockets faced pressure such as
hail, excess moisture or heat.
▪ Overall production and quality was
balanced by suitable conditions across
most areas, leading to above average
yields.
Harvest▪ Harvest progressed quickly across the
Prairies at a faster pace than the five-
year average.
▪ Warm and dry conditions accelerated
field work and supported high quality.

Export CapacityG r a i n H a n d l i n g S y s t e m
Record movement of grain by rail in Canada during the pandemic ensured stability of food exports in a time of need around the world.
Continued investments by Canadian grain handlers are improving capacity throughout the system, from in-land facilities to export terminals.
Canadian grain and oilseed exports have grown by 46% since 2010. Total export volume is forecast to reach over 46 million tonnes in 2020-21.
Canadian farmers, seed developers, grain handlers and exporters are working collaboratively via Cereals Canada with a focus on continued export-led growth.
