Kia Ora owner Ananda Krishnan also

has shares in Vinery Stud stallions Headwater (Exceed And Excel), All

Too Hard (Casino Prince) and Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) as well as

Newgate Farm resident Deep Field (Northern Meteor).

ANZ Bloodstock News last week broke the story that Kia Ora had

purchased a significant share in the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-

trained Farnan from Aquis Farm and Phoenix Thoroughbreds, which also

bred the valuable colt.

The deal for Farnan, whose only blemish in a six-start two-year-old

season came in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), was finalised

and the paperwork signed on Wednesday that will eventually see the colt

stand at the property which previously stood champion stallions such as

Midstream (Blandford) and Delville Wood (Bois Roussel).

“Mr Krishnan has a huge passion for the thoroughbred industry,

particularly in Australia, so it is something that he has always been

wanting to do but, as I said, he’s been waiting for the right horse at the

right time,” Wright said.

“At this stage, when you are in the stallion business, you are always

looking for the right horse, so as I mentioned earlier, we’re not going to

stand ten stallions, we have no interest in that, but we could stand one or

two more, that could be a possibility. We want to stand the right horse and

not stand something for the sake of it.

“It’s a hugely exciting time and to get back into the game with a horse

of Farnan’s calibre is a magnificent way to start and underlines what we

are trying to do.”

Aquis Farm relinquishing standing rights in Farnan, who also won the

Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) and the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

last season, may seem unusual for a three-state stallion operation but there

is a recent precedent with prominent American operation WinStar Farm

selling unbeaten US Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) to Coolmore.

Aquis Farm managing director Shane McGrath, who selected

$670,000 Magic Millions Yearling Sale graduate Farnan as a young horse,

said yesterday that the proposal put forward by Kia Ora was compelling.

“We are still heavily involved in the horse but from a business point of

view, and Tony Fung’s a businessman, when we presented the business

case to sell or not to sell, the head led the heart,” McGrath said,

“The exciting part from the industry’s perspective is that there was no

bigger way for Kia Ora to announce themselves on the stallion stage than

through the acquisition of Farnan.

“I would say for every colt investor going forward, it shows that there’s

another serious player in the game.”

Out of Group 3 winner Tallow (Street Cry) and a three-quarter brother

to Listed-winning sprinter Sandbar (Snitzel), Farnan is due to trial for the

first time this campaign in heat one over 850 metres at Randwick tomorrow

against Group class horses including Kolding (Ocean Park), Probabeel

(Savabeel) and Rathlin (Fastnet Rock).

“A big positive for us buying into him was

the way he was looked after as a two-year-old. Instead of continuing on (to the

Sires and Champagne) after the Slipper when he was in good form with a three-

year-old campaign in mind, they gave him a very good spell,” Wright said.

“There’s a lot of rain coming through Sydney at the minute and that is

something we have to keep an eye on but he couldn’t be in better form. They

did a very good job with him as a two-year-old and his race record reflects that

and we’re hoping for a very good three-year-old campaign.”

When Farnan does retire to Kia Ora Stud, Wright believes the collective

broodmare power at the partnership’s disposal will give the first season

stallion an incredible start at stud.

“I Am Invincible arrived in my second year at Yarraman, so I have seen

his rise from the very beginning from when he was a $10,000 stallion up to

what he is now: in my eyes the most magnificent stallion and an absolute

breedshaper,” he said.

“At Yarraman, we never dodged the fact that in Vinnie's first couple of books,

the mares were of an OK to average quality, but he did it himself and proved how

elite he is just by doing it himself.

“But with Farnan starting off, being a Slipper winner and being by Not

A Single Doubt with a nice pedigree and such a good-looking horse, he

will get a very good calibre of mare. With the broodmare band of our own,

Aquis and Phoenix, he will get the best chance of any stallion who has

retired in Australia in years.”

Wright was recently on the Gold Coast at the Magic Millions National Sale

attempting to add to the depth of Kia Ora’s broodmare band, but came away

empty handed.

“Mr Krishnan has one of the best broodmare bands in Australia. His love

for the game is just so high and now bringing stallions back to Kia Ora is so

exciting,” he said.

“We were up at the Magic Millions and it was very tough buying at that

top level. There were a lot of people there supporting the market, but we will

definitely have our eyes open and ensure, at our end, that Farnan gets good-

class mares in his first season.”

Bobbie Lewis next for Home Of The Brave

Following his win in the Aurie’s Star

Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m), James Cummings

will make the most of Home Of The Brave’s

(Starspangledbanner) talent down the straight

with the Godolphin head trainer setting the

nine-year-old for the Bobbie Lewis Quality

(Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington on September

12. “I thought he performed very strongly,”

Cummings said on RSN 927 on Sunday. “He’s

got a lot of straight track experience from

his racing overseas and it continues to show

whenever we run the horse up the straight he

always performs so well. It was great to see him

win again by three quarters of a length to the

horse who beat him two starts ago, Great Again,

he’s got that bit of winning form about him

now and I’d like to think he can keep it up. We

haven’t locked anything in right now but to me

the Bobbie Lewis would be a nice race to keep

him on the fresh side and give him another look

up the straight.”

Alligator Blood wins trialGroup 1 winner Alligator Blood (All Too

Hard) ramped up his spring campaign with a

strong jump out victory at the Sunshine Coast

yesterday. The David Vandyke-trained four-

year-old, who took out the Australian Guineas

(Gr 1, 1600m) in February, took on three rivals

in the 1000-metre hit-out. He ran home strongly

to win by about half a length with Micheal

Hellyer on board. Vandyke has suggested that

Alligator Blood will have another course proper

trial at the Sunshine Coast on August 25 before

resuming on September 12 at Doomben in a

Quality Handicap (1110m) with 61 kilograms.

A Sydney campaign after the Doomben race is

most likely for the gelding.

Big names to step out at FlemingtonA number of high-profile horses including

leading Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) contender

Russian Camelot (Montjeu), Melbourne Cup (Gr

1, 3200m) winning stablemate Vow And Declare

(Declaration Of War), sprinter Tofane (Ocean

Park) and three-year-old Hanseatic (Street Boss),

are all set to have jump outs at Flemington this

morning. Also scheduled to jump out in the

course proper heats are fellow Flemington-

trained horses Lyre (Lonhro), Buffalo River

(Noble Mission) and last-start Bletchingly Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) winner Viridine (Poet’s Voice).

Fifty Stars to make belated spring returnThis year’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner

Fifty Stars (Sea The Stars) will not feature in the

Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) after suffering a slight

knee injury. The Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m)

on October 17 has been earmarked as a first-up

target for the European-bred six-year-old who has

won ten of his 23 starts for the Lindsay Park stable

and owner Gerry Ryan. Fifty Stars has not raced

since his Australian Cup victory on March 7.

Global Gift opens Australian accountGlobal Gift (Invincible Spirit), a 110,000gns

purchase at last year’s Tattersalls Autumn Horses

In Training Sale, landed his first win in Australia at

Bendigo yesterday, leading from point to post in

a BM78 handicap. Trained by Ciaron Maher and

David Eustace and owned by Highclere Australia,

the five-year-old gelding never looked in doubt

winning by two and three-quarter lengths on the

bridle and could now be set for bigger and better

things leading into the spring.

The Face off to the paddockPromising three-year-old The Face (Rubick),who

won impressively at Gosford when having his

first start, will be spelled after his third behind

runaway winner Anders (Not A Single Doubt)

in the Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on

Saturday. Trained by Gerald Ryan, homebred

The Face finished six and a half lengths behind

the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-prepared

Anders. Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) was second in

the $140,000 three-year-old race.

Vain option for RulershipRulership (I Am Invincible), who was scratched

from the Rosebud, will be nominated for the Vain

Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield this weekend

by Peter and Paul Snowden. The three-year-old,

owned by the Newgate Farm-China Horse Club

colts syndicate, showed promise last season,

winning his first start at Randwick in January

before finishing runner-up to Hanseatic (Street

Cry) in the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr

3, 1100m) in February. He was spelled after his

fourth to Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt) in the

Kindergarten (Gr 3, 1100m) in April. Connections

will make a decision on Wednesday as to whether

Rulership is sent to Melbourne.

Kiwi Heptinstall celebrates successful periodExpatriate Kiwi breeder, owner and racing

enthusiast Tommy Heptinstall is reaping the

rewards of his decision to move a number of his

current racing team across the Tasman, with

two winners in the space of four days getting the

venture underway on a high note. Wertheimer

(Tavistock) started the ball rolling when he broke

his maiden status over 1300 metres at Cranbourne

on Wednesday for trainers Trent Busuttin and

Natalie Young, while Aqueduct (Dundeel) picked

up his second career victory when successful

over 1400 metres at Murray Bridge on Saturday

for trainer Michael Hickmott. A retired real estate

agent and living in Melbourne for the past four

years, Heptinstall is delighted with how events

have panned out in the past week. “It has been

a fantastic few days, as any time you win a race

anywhere is good,” he said. “We had this plan to

bring some of our horses over here to Australia

and so far, so good. We brought eight over with six

going to Michael in Adelaide and the other two to

Trent and Natalie at Cranbourne.”

Covid scare for Warren stableJason Warren was forced to scratch all of his

runners this weekend after a member of his staff

came into close contact with someone who tested

positive for Covid-19. In a statement, Racing

Victoria said yesterday it "was advised by the

Jason Warren stable on Friday evening that a staff

member had been identified as a close contact

of a person who has tested positive to Covid-19"

and that "this staff member works at Mr Warren’s

private training facility, does not interact with all

staff members at the stable, and has not attended

a race meeting for several months". "Acting with

an abundance of caution and in the best interests

of the industry, Mr Warren withdrew his horses

from yesterday’s race meetings at Flemington

and Moe so that no staff members would be in

attendance," the statement said. "In addition, Mr

Warren determined that he would keep all horses

at his private training facility on the Mornington

Peninsula whilst the matter is further investigated.”

Riordan suspendedLiam Riordan’s stellar day at Flemington on

Saturday has been soured after the apprentice

jockey was handed a fine and suspension for

breaching whip rules. Riordan has been fined

$1,000 and suspended for eight meetings for

his winning ride on Jittery Jack (Desert King)

in the $75,000 Rubaroc Handicap (1410m). The

23-year-old used the whip ten times prior to

the 100-metre mark, five more than permitted.

His suspension will start after Wednesday's

meeting at Sandown and conclude in time for

the Bendigo meeting on Friday, August 21.

QRIC investigating Barcaldine placingsThe Queensland Racing and Integrity

Commission has launched an investigation into

the incorrect placing of Bound To Me (Ferocity)

in Saturday’s Pat Ogden Family Handicap

(1000m) at Barcaldine on Saturday. The Ross

Meek-trained seven-year-old was placed fourth

with weights declared in the race, when replays

clearly show Pointstohappiness (Warhead)

finishing ahead in what was a blanket finish to

the final race of the day. QRIC’s chief steward

has demanded a report into the incident.

NEW ZEALAND

James’ big names to trial at TaupoThe two open class trials to be held before the

Taupo meeting on Wednesday will see a host

of New Zealand’s best horses step out for their

first serious hit out, including a high-class trio

from the Roger James and Robert Wellwood

stable. The Cambridge trainers will line up

dual Group 3 winner Concert Hall (Savabeel)

and lightly raced six-year-old Sherrif (High

Chaparral) in the first heat, while Two Illicit

(Jimmy Choux), one of the top three-year-old

fillies of last season, will contest the second of

the 1100-metre heats. “We traditionally don’t

have many runners over the winter months

and we’ve kept to that again this year,” James

said. “I’m delighted with the condition of the

three horses we are taking to the two trials at

Taupo although I’m not expecting too much

from them. It is an ideal opportunity to get

a line on them and to then plan for where

we head next although we are hampered

at present with limited programming

information available from New Zealand

Thoroughbred Racing to allow trainers to

make those decisions.”

Australia ruled out for Two IllicitMeanwhile, Roger James has ruled out

campaigning the Trelawney Stud-owned Two

Illicit in Australia during the spring because

of the current Covid-19 situation. “We will see

where we go with her (Two Illicit) after the trial

but Australia has been discounted under the

current circumstances,” he said. “It’s often not

the worst thing for a four-year-old mare to have

a quieter spring as it can be a hard time for them

going from age group company to competing

against the older horses. We will concentrate

domestically with her and if all goes well, we

could look at Sydney or Melbourne in the

autumn. I’ve been pretty careful with her on the

wet tracks at home so she is going to Taupo for a

gallop to bring her on.” Stablemate Concert Hall

could target the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m)

while the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) is a

potential option for Sherrif.

Schofer celebrates six-win haulHazel Schofer was yesterday attempting to come

to terms with her achievements at Hawera on

Saturday when the three-kilogram apprentice

rode six winners on the 12-race card. The

winning haul took her to the top of the jockeys’

premiership a week into the new season and

pencilled her name into the record books

alongside James McDonald for most wins in

a day by an apprentice in New Zealand, albeit

noting the advantage of a 12-race card. Since

1995, only six senior riders have matched the

feat in New Zealand, with luminaries including

Lance O'Sullivan (twice), David Walsh (twice),

Cathy Treymane, Michael Coleman and Chris

Johnson. “I went into the day knowing I had

some good rides and if I rode them well enough,

I might be able to get two or three wins, but I

definitely didn’t expect the day I had,” she said.

“I just went out there to try my best and they just

kept winning. I don’t really have an explanation

for it but I did manage to get into a nice place in

most races on horses that were travelling well

and we managed to get some momentum built

up which carried us home.”

Treble for MauriceIt was a breakout weekend for former Arrowfield

shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero), who sired three

new first-crop winners in Japan. On Saturday,

Stutti (2 f ex Lilavati by Zenno Rob Roy) was the

first of winners as she broke her maiden over 1600

metres on debut at Niigata, followed by T O Mary

(2 f ex Reagle Mary by Afternoon Deelites) scoring

over 1200 metres at Sapporo. Then yesterday,

Infinite (2 f ex Morganite by Agnes Digital) ran

out a comfortable winner over 1600 metres at

Niigata. Maurice shuttled to Arrowfield for three

seasons beginning in 2017 and covered a total

of 278 mares. Given current travel restrictions,

the multiple Group 1 winner has not returned to

Australia this year but his first two-year-olds are

set to hit the track down under this season. Stutti, T

O Mary and Infinite join Kaiser Nova as first-crop

winners for Maurice, bringing his tally to four.

ex Miss Lucifer by Noverre) saw the Godolphin

colt burst through off the inside rail and claim

a maiden Group 1 success in the Prix Maurice

de Gheest (Gr 1, 1300m) at Deauville yesterday.

Victory also provided his sire Dubawi (Dubai

Millennium) with a 43rd top level winner.

Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) recorded further

Group 1 black type for owners Cambridge

Stud in finishing three-quarter lengths behind

in second, with Lope Y Fernandez (Lope De

Vega) third. Space Blues is quickly asserting

himself as one of the most progressive horses

in Europe this season, having already won the

Lennox Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Glorious Goodwood

last month for trainer Charlie Appleby. Out

of Group 2 winner Miss Lucifer, he is a half-

brother to leading UAE miler Shuruq (Elusive

Quality) in turn the dam of American Oaks

(Gr 1, 9f) placegetter Antoinette (Hard Spun).

Dubawi stood at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud for

a fee of £250,000 in 2020.

Group 3 winner for ArrowfieldThe silks of Arrowfield Stud were in Group

3 winning form at Deauville yesterday as

Skyward (Camelot) returned to the winners’

enclosure to claim a hard-fought victory in the

Prix de Reux (Gr 3, 2500m). A winner of all three

starts last year as a three-year-old, including

the Prix Turrenne (Listed, 2400m), Skyward

had been beaten on his two starts this term

before yesterday’s victory for trainer Fabrice

Chappet. Skyward is a half-brother to Group 3

winner and Prix Jean Romanet (Gr 1, 2,000m)

runner-up Siyoushake (Siyouni), with his dam

Shakeyourbody (Giant’s Causeway) a sister to

Grade 1 winner Frost Giant.

Three for Vadamos Rich Hill Stud shuttler Vadamos (Monsun)

sired his third first-crop winner on Saturday

when Tarhun (2 c ex Miss Purity Pinker by One

Cool Cat) broke his maiden over 1500 metres at

Naples in Italy. Purchased at the Goffs Ireland

Autumn Yearling and Mixed Sale for €4,500,

Tarhun is the only foal out of Miss Purity Pinker

(One Cool Cat), who herself is a half-sister

to multiple stakes winner Azzeccagarbugli

(Kodiac). Group 1 winner Vadamos stands at

Rich Hill in New Zealand for a fee of NZ $15,000

(plus GST) in 2020.

Six for Gleneagles

Third in the Prix du Lys (Gr 3, 2400m) last

time, Measure Of Time (3 c ex Inch Perfect

by Theatrical) claimed his first stakes success

yesterday at Deauville when landing the Prix

Michel Houyvet (Listed, 2800m) for Andre

Fabre. The Coolmore runner was making it three

wins from five starts, having won on his only

start last year and following up at Clairefontaine

on his return in May, and became the sixth

stakes winner for his sire Gleneagles (Galileo).

He got the better of the favourite Zeyrek (Sea

The Stars) by a head in a close finish, while the

German raider Manoucheer (Adlerflug) was

three-quarters of a length away in third. Dual

2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Gleneagles

stands at Coolmore in Fethard and his 2020 fee

was €35,000.

Seven for MaysonA surprise victory for 20-1 shot Maystar (3 g ex

Oakley Star by Multiplex) in the Prix Moonlight

Cloud (Listed, 1200m) saw Mayson (Invincible

Spirit) claim a seventh career stakes winner.

Ridden by Hollie Doyle for trainer Archie

Watson, the three-year-old defeated Botch

(Fuisse) by half a length with Galadriel (Dutch

Art) a further length back in third. Mayson

stood at Cheveley Park Stud for £5,000 in 2020.

Regal Reality scores Sovereign success

Cheveley Park Stud homebred Regal Reality

(Intello) returned to the winners’ enclosure

for the first time since winning the Brigadier

Gerard Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) over a year ago

when scoring in the Sovereign Stakes (Gr 3, 1m)

at Salisbury yesterday. The victory took the Sir

Michael Stoute-trained five-year-old’s tally to

three wins at Group 3 level and four wins from

15 starts with five placings. Hitting the front

in the final furlong he strode clear to win by

three and a half lengths. Beat Le Bon (Wootton

Bassett) held on for second by a head from

Positive (Dutch Art) and there was a further

four lengths back to Bless Him (Sea The Stars)

in fourth.

Glen Shiel strikes in Phoenix SprintSnatching victory in the final strides, six-year-

old Glen Shiel (Pivotal) added a second stakes

success to his CV yesterday in the Phoenix

Sprint Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the Curragh. The

Archie Watson-trained gelding had ran second

in the Prix de Ris-Orangis (Gr 3, 1200m) last

month and took out a Class 3 conditions race

at Newcastle last week but was sent off as an

unfancied 16-1. He got the better of Sweet

Mimosa (Listed, 6f) winner Sonaiyla (Dark

Angel) in a blanket finish which saw Group

1-placed Forever In Dreams (Dream Ahead) a

head away in third and multiple Group winner

Speak In Colours (Excelebration) a further

short head back in fourth.

Carl Jaspers Preis (Gr 2, 2400m) at Cologne

in May, Be My Sheriff (Lawman) claimed a

second Group success of his career and fourth

stakes victory in the Furstenberg-Rennen at

Berlin-Hoppegarten (Gr 3, 2400m) yesterday.

The Henk Grewe-trained six-year-old was sent

off as the evens favourite and he duly obliged,

getting the better of Moonlight Man (Reliable

Man) by a length with Notre Ruler (Ruler Of

The World) a close third of the seven runners.

The entire has now won six of his 21 starts with

13 placings.

Tarnawa goes back to back in Give Thanks At her first start for the year, the Dermot Weld-

trained Tarnawa (4 f Shamardal - Tarana by

Cape Cross) made it back-to-back wins in

the Give Thanks Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f ) at Cork

was last seen finishing ninth in the British

Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (1m3.5f ),

defeated Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f ) runner-

up Cayenne Pepper (Australia) by a length

and three-quarters with Passion (Galileo)

a further three and three-quarter lengths

away in third. Tarnawa is one of 148 stakes

winners for her late sire Shamardal (Giant’s

Causeway).

Another Grade 1 for Tiz The LawTiz The Law (3 c Constitution - Tizfiz by Tiznow)

added a fourth Grade 1 win to his CV on

Saturday when winning the Runhappy Travers

by five and a half lengths ahead of Caracaro

(Uncle Mo) with Max Player (Honor Code)

coming home a further two lengths away in

third. Tiz The Law, a winner of six of his seven

starts, is the only top flight winner for his sire

Constitution (Tapit).

Gamine scores Longines TestThe Bob Baffert-trained Gamine (3 f Into

Mischief - Peggy Jane by Kafwain) made it

two elite level wins in a row when scoring

impressively in the Longines Test Stakes (Gr

1, 7f ) at Saratoga on Saturday. The three-year-

old filly, who took out the Acorn Stakes (Gr
