COVID19 & FLYING TO SABLE ISLAND

Safety measures related to the flight to Sable Island are mandated by Transport Canada’s Interim Order which places certain flight restrictions and requirements on both Sable Aviation and its passengers. Violation of these requirements, or falsifying information, may result in a fine of up to $5,000 for individuals, and up to $25,000 for corporations.

All passengers of Sable Aviation must complete a health survey and travel questionnaire that asks if guests have:

● Symptoms of fever, coughing or breathing difficulties. Or have a medical certificate indicating their symptoms are not COVID-19 related (asthma, etc)

● Been refused boarding on an aircraft in the past 14 days due to a medical reason related to COVID-19

● Are not subject to a mandatory quarantine order due to recent travel or an order issued by a provincial/local public health authority

Face masks are mandatory in the airport lounge and during both flights. Guests must have two face masks in case one is lost. Any non-medical mask or face covering must be:

● Made of at least 2 layers of tightly woven material such as cotton or linen ● Large enough to completely cover the nose and mouth without gaping ● Able to be secured to a person’s head with ties or ear loops ● Will wear their face mask at all times during the flight ● Will comply with instructions from the pilot regarding wearing the mask

A passenger will be denied boarding if they:

● Answer any of the above questions in the negative ● Refuse to answer any of the above questions ● Are found to have falsified any answers ● Exhibit COVID-19 symptoms

If a person is denied boarding due to COVID-19 symptoms, they are further banned from boarding all flights for 14 days unless they can provide a medical certificate indicating that their symptoms are not related to COVID-19.

COVID19 & EXPLORING SABLE ISLAND  While Picture Perfect Tours has signed the POST Promise, a tool to educate businesses and their employees on the five key steps to workplace and customer safety. This was created to be consistent with what has been recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada.  Parks Canada have made changes to the protocols and dynamic of visiting Sable in order to protect their

staff. The biggest change is that we have no access to Main Station, Parks Canada’s home on the island. Usually, we use Main Station as our kitchen, bathroom, rest area and home base for the day. On Sable Island, some of the changes will include:

● Where the plane lands will be our base for the day  ● No interaction with Parks Canada staff unless beyond a 2m distance ● No transport or vehicle access from Parks Canada ● A temporary toilet shelters will be built by Parks Canada near the plane ● We will only be able to explore where we can reach by foot ● Guests must maintain 2m distance between while hiking ● Hands must be washed or sanitized before entering the plane ● Everyone must practice proper respiratory etiquette ● Guests are responsible for providing their own food and beverages ● Potable water will be available to fill personal water bottles ● If medical attention is required by visitors, PPE and protocols for

handling patients in a close-up situation will be followed

In previous years, if a group had been unable to find wild horses during their hike on Sable Island, Parks Canada staff would escort the group by vehicles to an area where horses had been congregating. With new physical distancing requirements, Parks Canada staff this is not possible. There is a risk of not being able to see horses on Sable Island. With wildlife we can’t control or guarantee their location and we may have to enjoy the immense beauty and solitude of this remarkable ribbon of sand in the North Atlantic.

CONDITIONS:

Sometimes the most memorable experiences in life are also the most difficult - and this journey is no different.

Weather conditions or logistics may prevent our charter flight from taking off. If the tour is cancelled prior to take off, a full refund will be issued. We are guaranteed a 2-day travel window (Saturday and Sunday) by Parks Canada and guests must be available in Halifax during that time.

Participants must be in good physical shape, as the experience includes a full day (8 hours) of hiking in sand. Outside of COVID19 related symptoms, participants must not have any prior medical conditions that could affect their involvement (ie; heart conditions, breathing difficulties, mobility issues, pregnancy, etc). If you are on any medications, you must bring at least a week’s worth, in the unlikely event we are unable to leave the island. If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know.

As mentioned earlier, there are no guarantees when encountering wildlife in their domain. Sable Island is over 42 km in length and we can only venture on foot from where the plane can land. The possibility exists that we may not find any of the island’s 500 wild horses with Parks Canada unable to assist with vehicle transport.

If this was easy to do and simple to get to, then everyone would have been here. Flights generally are able to land 50% of the time on Sable Island. But this is one of the most wild and remote places left in the world, and the reward for making the journey - is one of the most unforgettable experiences you will ever have in your life! Guaranteed.

NON-COVID19 ITEMS TO KEEP IN MIND: Given that the aircraft could potentially land several kilometres from the Main Station, we need to be prepared for a long day in the summer heat in terms of remoteness, lack of shelter and facilities, coming prepared with proper clothing, sunscreen, hat, footwear, water, etc..

● The plane has a strict weight limit of 1370 lbs. Sable Aviation will need to weigh everyone and everything before departure

● Parks Canada require a name and number for an emergency contact(s) ● Liability waivers for both Picture Perfect Tours and Sable Aviation must

be read and signed before departure ● There is no cell phone reception or WiFi on Sable Island ● This experience makes for a really long and exhilarating day, usually over

13 hours. Please keep this in mind if making a long car journey afterward ● To prevent the introduction of new insects or disease, ensure that your

clothes, footwear and equipment is clean. Do not bring clothing that has been worn at horse farms or stables without cleaning and disinfecting

● All footwear will be brushed and disinfected for biosecurity ● There are no mosquitoes or ticks on Sable Island ● Visitors must maintain a 20m distance from all wildlife on Sable Island ● Wear appropriate footwear. Sneakers or hiking boots with a coarse mesh

quickly fill with sand ● It is generally cooler on Sable with cool breezes coming off the ocean.

Layering in comfortable active wear is the best approach  ● The UV index on Sable can be high, even on cloudy days. Make sure to

bring sunscreen, lip balm with an SPF rating, hat and sunglasses ● Have a backpack to carry items and extra clothing ● A walking stick can be helpful while hiking through sand   ● Bring at least a week’s worth or more of any critical, prescription or

allergy medications in the unlikely event that your visit ends up longer than intended

● Don't forget your camera with spare batteries, memory cards and your binoculars

● And last but not least - bring your keen sense of adventure!
