2020 OSANA Election

Chuck Tabbert MSN, CRNA President Elect Employment: Northern Anesthesia Providers Joined AANA: 2016 OSANA Office(s) Held: President, President-Elect, Board of Directors, Student Board Representative OSANA Committee(s) Served: State GRC Finance Student Programs

Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities: Adjunct Faculty Lourdes University I am running for this position because…

CRNAs in Ohio have done an amazing job making-up ground to establish OSANA as a player in Ohio's healthcare politics.

That hard work led to our ordering bill passage, but there is more work to be done. I'm running for president-elect to

continue the consistency as our association tackles

- The holes in HB 224

- The strict supervision laws (OH one of a few states have)

- The current legislative attacks by

* AAs claiming equal scopes of practice * PAs asking to perform anesthesia * RTs creating an advanced practice provider that can prescribe

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

Maintaining a voice in Ohio Healthcare politics. Now that we are a recognized profession in the statehouse, we need to

grow those relationships as we look to advance our practice, protect our practice, and provide guidance on healthcare

crisis affecting Ohio.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

Cesarean Section

- utilize regional anesthesia techniques to control pain without narcotic - understanding differing physiology - available to assist in neonatal transition care - get to be present during a very exciting time for mom and dad.

Susan Newell, MSN, CRNA Secretary Employment: Newell Anesthesia Malabar Anesthesia Joined AANA: 2002 OSANA Office(s) Held: Board of Director 2018-2020

OSANA Committee(s) Served: 2016-present Government Relations committee; 2019-present PAC committee chair Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities: Current Doctorate student at University of Cincinnati; Current FNP student University of Cincinnati; Opioid Stewardship Committee Ohio Health; Creator of Peer Support Group associated with Obstetric unit for Women with SUD called Moms Getting Sober

I am running for this position because…

Continue to be present for the work I have been a part of these last four years. Help define and structure the committee

and committee chair roles for continuity in transition. The goal is to help in efficiency and productivity of the board

overall.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

It is imperative for OSANA to capitalize on the momentum that has been achieved over the last few years. Defining

future direction of the organization and clarifying the structure so the work can continue when the present leadership

moves on will continue to bolster the health of the organization. We need to keep the culture of "We Can Do It" going.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

Obstetric anesthesia is my passion. In the last five years I have transitioned to a primary position in obstetrics. I still work

in the OR, but this is my full time contract. This specialty has broadened my role as a CRNA in ways I didn't anticipate

when I first began in anesthesia. I enjoy working as a regional anesthesia expert. Obstetrics typically lends itself to a

more autonomous role, allowing me to grow as a practitioner. Finally, the involvement on the floor with the care of the

patient overall has been a great experience for me.

Ryan Wells, MSN, CRNA Director Employment: FT: Akron Children’s Hospital; Per Diem: Aultman Hospital; Per Diem: NorthStar Anesthesia Joined AANA: 2017 OSANA Committee(s) Served: Federal Government Relations Committee, Chair

Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities: Akron Children’s Hospital: Health Policy Subcommittee, Member Former adjunct faculty at The University of Akron School of Nursing; Featured on ONA: Year of the Nurse 2020 Testimonials

I am running for this position because…

I had the privilege of working with the OSANA board as a student while completing my anesthesia program at the

University of Akron. During that time I was able to begin the process of building relationships with the Board of

Directors, committee members and CRNAs and SRNAs who worked tirelessly in their advocacy efforts for our profession.

Those individuals inspired me to further invest into my new and developing career from day one. I desire to take this

knowledge and continue to develop and grow my own understanding of our field as well as to cultivate and empower

those seeking to advocate for the advancement of our great profession of nurse anesthesia.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

We have made incredible progress with our legislation and would like to see us continue to work at state and federal

levels to secure supervision removal; to further motivate the entirety of our profession to become politically active in

any capacity possible; to continue investing into our PAC and to ultimately see Ohio CRNAs come together in a unified

invested, passionate way for the improved outcomes of our patients across this state.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

While I still consider myself the “freshman” of the team here at Akron Children’s, I have fallen in love with the

neurosurgical and plastics cases that we do here. From cranial remodeling to tumor debulking and removal, these cases

challenge me both in skill and in knowledge. I have the privilege of working with children who are facing frightening and

traumatic chapters in their lives and provide them with comfort and relief while they’re in my care.

Beau Schultz, MSN, CRNA Director Employment: Consultant Anesthesiologists Inc.; CRNA Joined AANA: 2017 I am running for this position because…

To help advance the profession into the new era of never before seen

independence.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

Work with the Ohio Board of Nursing to find a way for CRNA's to achieve prescribing status like NP's have.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

Any kind of joint replacement. There are so many options for a good anesthetic with these cases. This allows me, the

CRNA, to have a wide range of flexibility when coming up with the safest anesthetic plan to fit different patients' needs.

Kim Riviello DNP, MBA, CRNA Director Employment: Anesthesia Services Group President/CEO Joined AANA: 1987 OSANA Committee(s) Served: Government Relations Committee; Communications Committee; Southwest Ohio Region Director

Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities: Adjunct Professor at LaRoche University, PA for the DNAP Program

I am running for this position because…

I have slowly becoming more involved with OSANA and I am at a point in my career that I feel I can commit more time to

the organization.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

I strongly feel that OSANA needs to work towards "opt out."

My favorite kind of case to do is…

Actually at this point in my career I truly enjoy managing the business aspect of anesthesia. It is challenging to keep

things organized and running efficiently but rewarding to acquire new facilities and attract new CRNAs to the group.

Melinda Rakesmith, MSN, CRNA Director Employment: Full time CRNA, Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center Joined AANA: 1997 OSANA Committee(s) Served: PAC 2019-2020 Peer Assistance 2019-2020 Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities:

Mentoring SRNAs

I am running for this position because…

I have been a CRNA for over 20 years. In the last year I have been listening to “Beyond the Mask”, a podcast by Jeremy

Stanley CFP, AIF and Sharon Pearce MSN, CRNA. This podcast has taught me the importance of knowing the history as

well as the politics of my profession. Through this education my eyes were open to the fact that I need to be active in my

profession to support others now and in our future.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

Educating CRNAs and SRNAs about the importance of being active in their professional organizations.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

I love to do trauma and big abdominal cases. I use many of the skills and knowledge I’ve learned throughout my

anesthesia career to manage these critically ill patients. It’s rewarding to start out with a critically ill person and watch

how what I’ve learned and mastered makes a difference in that patient’s outcome.

John Reichert MSN, CRNA Director Employment: Adena Regional Medical Center- Staff CRNA Otterbein Univ/OhioHealth Grant Med Center Nurse Anesthesia Program- Part-Time Faculty Joined AANA: 2009 OSANA Committee(s) Served: State Government Relations- 2019-2020

I am running for this position because…

I have always been deeply passionate and proud of the nurse anesthesia profession. As an SRNA at my first AANA Annual

Meeting I realized how important it is for CRNAs to get involved at the state and national levels with advocacy and

promotion of the profession. I am at a point in my life and career when I have the extra time and energy necessary to be

a dedicated OSANA Director. I am excited at the possibility of having this opportunity. I am impressed with the energy

and passion within OSANA over the past few years and the positive legislative changes that have resulted. I am

committed to keeping the momentum going so that all Ohio CRNAs can practice to the full scope of their license,

certification and training.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

I think it is important that we continue to foster our positive relationships with legislators and key contacts in the Ohio

Statehouse. We have had positive legislative outcomes in the past year and I think we should continue to move forward

and attempt to remove all supervision requirements for Ohio CRNAs.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

I enjoy any robotic case. Since I started doing robotic cases years ago my depth of knowledge of abdominal and thoracic

anatomy has greatly increased. It is also amazing over the last 5 years how the technology of the surgical robots

themselves has improved. I especially like doing thoracic robotic cases and the close communication that is necessary

between the surgeon and the anesthesia practitioner.

Brandy Cooley-Debolt, MSN, CRNA Director Employment: Northstar Anesthesia at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge OH Joined AANA: 2004 OSANA Office(s) Held: Current Southeastern Regional Director

I am running for this position because…

I want to be more involved with OSANA events and getting more CRNAs involved.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

Getting more member involvement.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

I love doing c-sections, being able to help comfort and encourage a mom as she’s in such a vulnerable state is very

gratifying.

Clinical Coordinator for UC Nurse Anesthesia Program at Highland District Hospital. Active in helping the CRNA legislation move forward 2016-2019.

I am running for this position because…

I am running to further support and serve the the CRNA profession. I love my profession and would like to give back on

a higher level.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

Public Relations to educate the Ohio public about the CRNA profession and our role at the health cate table. And of

course, keep working to achieve full authority of practice to the highest level of education and training.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

I love everything I do and the variety of cases, blocks, techniques is what ensures I am always learning and striving to be

better.

I am running for this position because…

I am running for nominations committee to enhance my involvement and understanding of our professional

organization and activities. I would like to learn more about the workings of OSANA/AANA in order to become more

empowered to make change and advocate for our profession. I am also excited for the opportunity to network and to

foster new relationships with fellow CRNAs.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

OSANA has been doing a fantastic job of getting members more involved and to support the PAC. I think we should

continue to get even more of our community involved and knowledgeable about what this organization is doing for its

members.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

My favorite case to do is an idiopathic spinal fusion. I particularly enjoy these cases because they are more technically

difficult cases we perform at our institution. They require a detailed, specific set up and a lot of collaboration with the

perioperative team. Although we have a typical anesthetic "cocktail" for these patients I enjoy trialing different

multimodal techniques with these patients. The procedure is usually fairly predictable, yet every patient can have

different issues arise that keep me vigilant and using my critical thinking skills. It also helps that I enjoy working with the

surgeons who have, over time, learned to know and trust me.

Nichole Kimmet, MSN, RN, CRNA Nominations Committee Employment: Nationwide Children's Hospital, Staff CRNA Joined AANA: 2009 OSANA Committee(s) Served: Recently joined the State GRC

Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities: Coordinator for NCH Anesthesia Department Annual meal event at The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio; Department Representative to Hospital Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Council

I am running for this position because…

Throughout my last 8+ years as a practicing CRNA, I have seen the challenges, incredible efforts, and recent successes

that our State organization has experienced. I would love to be a part of this effort by offering my time and skills to

advance the practice of Nurse Anesthesia.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

In the coming year, I believe that member engagement should continue to be a focus of the organization. We all have

our own experiences and talents that can be utilized to benefit the organization and if we all make the effort to "lean in"

to the challenges we face, we will all succeed. We are all stronger together.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

My passion is in pediatrics. I love the unique environment that this population requires to return them wellness so that

they can just be a kid again. That being said, I love variety when it comes to surgical procedures. I enjoy rotating through

various specialties within the pediatric population. It keeps me engaged and on my toes!

Other Nursing/Healthcare Activities: HIMSS Northern Ohio Chapter, Cuyahoga County Heroin Task Force, College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME)- Opioid Task Force and Policy Sub-committee, CCF Nurse Anesthesia Program Clinical Faculty.

I am running for this position because…

This will be a continuation of my existing position on the Nominations Committee. Has 2020 been a strange year, or

what?! I hope my running for a second term will ensure continuity of our successful trajectory despite missing many

important moments in person. I have truly enjoyed meeting new peers in this state and look forward to making

additional connections in the upcoming term.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

OSANA has made hallmark strides in the past year! My only hope is to keep the momentum going: continue strong PAC

donations and presence with our legislators and community, be one step ahead of the curve and stay on our toes, be a

conduit of information and opportunity for our members.

My favorite kind of case to do is…

I love working in ENT/Plastic Surgery. The kinds of patients we see are going through a horrifying illness: a tumor

involving their face and identity, affecting their daily function such as sight, ability to eat, breathe, swallow, or show

facial expression. I find that this population demands much from the anesthesia team: paramount airway management

skills, advanced hemodynamic management, pain control, as well as considering all of the patient needs during a 4 to 24

hour surgery. After surgery, there are often serious defects as a compromise to complete resection- still a loss for the

patient. I am humbled to be present for the patient going through this massive transition.

I am running for this position because…

I would like to get more involved with OSANA and help continue the incredible work that many others have started in

order to advance our profession.

In the coming year, OSANA should focus on…

Legislation. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come as CRNAs in Ohio, and I look forward to being a part of where we’re

going!

My favorite kind of case to do is…

Anything pediatrics! Because I love the kiddos and the diversity of cases in the OR and all of the off-site locations.
