Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Community Services Center!

We have all faced a challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we hope that you and your loved ones remain healthy, safe and secure, wherever they may be.

After a very busy summer of unprecedented activity at the Center, we are moving into this new fall semester with our usual wide array of classes and tours. Through our activities program we offer you the opportunity to explore the local culture, learn new skills and meet others with similar interests. We have many great activities for you to join this fall--from Taiwanese cooking and yoga classes to neighborhood foodie tours and mountain hikes.

If you are new to Taiwan, you might want to consider joining one of our Survival Chinese language classes. These classes are designed to help you quickly learn some of the phrases and vocabulary you need to shop, get around town and eat in local restaurants. They are also a great way to connect with other newcomers.

The Center is a place to learn about Taiwan, make new friends, come for help and support when you need it, and sometimes just a place to come when you need to see a smiling face (or maybe smiling eyes, with our current office mask policy!).

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Shi Dong Market Tour or “What is That Vegetable and How Do I Cook It?”

Tue Sep 15 1 9:00am - 11:30am $ 600

Shi Dong Market Entrance 2

Ivy Chen

Bright, colorful and noisy, the Shi Dong Market is the place for all your produce needs. Join Ivy and learn some helpful hints and tips on what to buy, where to buy it, and how to be sure it's fresh. Ivy will also show you how to select fresh fish, seafood and other items of interest. Time permitting, this informative tour may include stops at various smaller area markets. If you get hungry or thirsty during the tour, don't worry, there are many options to satisfy your cravings!

2The Grand Hotel: History, Rumors and Secret Tunnels

Thu Sep 17 1 9:30am - 12:30pm $ 800 Grand Hotel

Lobby Jennifer Tong

Once the tallest building in Taipei (between 1973-1981), the Grand Hotel serves as a majestic city landmark with its classical Chinese architecture and impressive rooftop. Built on the site of an old Japanese Shinto shrine, the hotel is nestled against Yangmingshan and overlooks the Keelung River, offering its guests impressive views of Taipei city. Over its long history, it has been host to many dignitaries and foreign visitors to Taiwan. Join the Center for a fascinating tour of the Grand Hotel and learn about its history, folklore and colorful past. This is also your chance to visit one of its infamous secret passageways (maybe not so secret anymore), which for many years were the object of much speculation.

3 Neigoushan Trail Hike Tue Sep 22 1 9:00am - 2:00pm $ 800

Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center MRT Sta., Exit 6

Jennifer Turek

This hike begins with a walk around one side of Jinlong Lake. Wandering along a quiet road we will see many small farms until we reach the start of the trail. We will stop for a quick visit at Cui Lake then make our way up the mountain. This hike offers moderate inclines and declines with ropes for assistance. There are some wonderful viewpoints of the Xizhi Mountains and Taipei City as we loop around the trails. The trails are usually full of life and it’s not uncommon to spot magpies, eagles, barbets, spiders, snakes, lizards, etc. The trails are mostly along well-used dirt paths or wooden steps. There are several ways down the mountain and we will choose a trail on the day of our hike depending upon the speed of the group. Once out of the mountains, we will go back along the small farm road and loop around the opposite side of Jinlong Lake before catching taxis back to the Donghu MRT. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip; bring change for shared taxis, lunch, water and rain/sun/insect protection as needed.

A Movable Feast: A Foodie's Tour of Old Taipei's Wanhua District

Tue Sep 29 1 9:30am - 12:30pm $ 1200

Longshan Temple MRT Sta., Exit 1

Ivy Chen

The city of Taipei offers its residents and visitors an amazing array of food to eat. On any given street corner, lane or alley you will find a restaurant, food stall or market with delicacies to tempt your palate. But, with so much to choose from--where do you start? Well, how about with the Center in historic Wanhua, Taipei’s oldest district? This tasty tour with Ivy, our resident foodie, includes stops at a selection of small shops, vendors, and eateries as well as at one of the city’s oldest coffee shops. By the end of this tour you will be on your way to becoming a true connoisseur of eating Taiwanese! Cost of tastings included. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hearty appetite! This tour ends at the Ximen MRT Station.

6Magnificent and Scenic: Silver Stream Cave Hike

Wed Oct 07 1 9:50am - 2:00pm $ 800 Xindian MRT

Sta. Dory Chung

Silver Stream Cave is a tiny temple built into a cliff face behind a tall waterfall in the hills around Xindian. After taking a bus from the MRT to the trail head, this hike starts by climbing up some stairs (about ten minutes) to the temple and passes right behind the waterfall, offering us magnificent views through the water and out over the hills below. This is where you can have your photo taken as you pass behind the waterfall and peer through. From the temple we will hike up to the Maokong area and walk along the scenic Zhanghu and Zhangshu trails, which are both relatively flat. We will take a bus from the Zhangshu Temple to the Taipei Zoo MRT Station where we end our journey. This is an easy hike for fit and regular hikers, and moderately strenuous for beginners. Please wear proper hiking shoes; bring water, snacks, and rain/sun/insect protection as needed.

7 Marvelous Maokong Thu Oct 15 1 8:50am - 3:00pm $1400

Maokong Gondala Taipei Zoo Station

Helen Chen

Dedicated to the Daoist deity Lü Dongbin, Zhinan temple is well-known for its more than 1000 steps starting at the bottom of the hill. Lucky for us, it's now only a 10-minute walk from one of the Maokong Gondola stops. Built in 1890, Zhinan is one of Taiwan's oldest and most important Daoist temples. Folklore says that unmarried couples will break-up after visiting the temple together. Like many temples in Taiwan, deities from Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism are all honored and revered within its different halls. We are fortunate to have a professor of religious studies from Taiwan's National Chengchi University as our temple guide. From the temple, we will take the gondola up to the top to visit a family owned tea farm with more than 100-years of experience in tea growing and production. We will meet with the current owner, a 5th generation family member, tour their tea processing area, and learn about the family’s unique history. We will sample different types of tea and learn how to distinguish between the varying qualities. From there we will retrace our steps and end our tour at the Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo Station where our day began. This tour involves a good amount of walking (some up and down), along mostly paved and gravel paths, so sturdy and comfortable walking shoes are a must. Tea tasting, tea snacks and a one-way fare on the gondola are all included. Please bring water and a packed lunch; your EasyCard for the gondola ride down; and rain/sun/insect protection as needed.

8 Pingding Historic Canal Hike Tue Oct 20 1 9:00am -

2:30pm $800 Jiantan MRT Sta., Exit 1 Jennifer Turek

From the Jiantan MRT Station we will take the bus to Pingding Village where we will start this scenic hike along the Pingding Historic Canal. The trails we will follow are mostly downhill, along stone pathways and steps. The pathways are mostly shaded and very picturesque. There are three levels of waterways that date back about 150 years to walk along and explore. The canals were built to provide transportation, irrigation and drinking-water for the village. The trails eventually bring us to Zhishan Road where we will catch the bus back to the Jiantan MRT. If time permits, we will make a quick run across the street to look at the Shengren Waterfall. The falls can only be viewed from a distance but they are lovely to see. This is an easy to moderate hike, depending on your fitness/hiking experience. Wear proper hiking shoes; bring your Easy Card for the bus; water, lunch and sun/rain/insect protection as required.

9Sanxia Old Street, Zushi Daoist Temple and Indigo Dye Center

Thu Nov 05 1 9:30am - 3:30pm $800

Yongning MRT Sta. Exit 4

Jennifer Tong

Join Jennifer for an adventure to Sanxia, with its endearing old street and beautiful Zhushi Daoist Temple. Included in this tour is a visit to one of the town’s indigo dye centers where you will have the option of creating a hand-dyed item of your choosing (cost not included). Explore Taiwan the way the locals do—using MRT and public bus. Bring your Easy Card and a packed lunch. You may also choose to have lunch in one of the small local eateries or enjoy tasty treats and snacks available on the Old Street. This tour ends back at the Yongning MRT Station.

10 Hike to Nanshan Fude Temple Wed Nov 11 1 9:30am -

2:00pm $800Nanshijiao MRT Sta., Exit 4

Dory Chung

This moderately strenuous, 10km hike begins at the Nanshijiao MRT Station. The trail is a mix of dirt and paved stone, and not very steep (only about an altitude difference of 220m). The highlight of this hike is the Hongludi Nanshan Fude Temple, dedicated to Tudigong (Chinese God of Earth). There is a huge (about 22m high) statue of the Earth God on the roof with two big dragons on either side. Inside the temple is brilliant. There are several different gods who are in charge of different aspects of life. You can pray for a romantic relationship, good fortune, having babies, etc. But, to get to the temple, you must climb up more than 1200 stairs! This is the real workout portion of this hike. From the temple you will have one of the most beautiful views of Taipei city. Our way down will be on a mountain trail where we will pass by a small, but well-decorated Burmese-style temple. We finish back at the Nanshijiao MRT Station. This hike requires a reasonable level of fitness. Please wear proper hiking shoes; bring water, snacks, and rain/sun/insect protection as needed.

11The Culture of Tea: A Hands-on Tea Brewing Class

Fri Nov 13 1 10:00am - 12noon $1200 The Center Yasuko Hondo

Drinking tea in Taiwan goes beyond just quenching one’s thirst. It is also a social and cultural activity, which can be traced back to ancient China and is embedded into the culture of the country. For the Taiwanese, tea culture includes tea production, tea arts and wares, traditional tea ceremonies and the social aspects of consuming tea. In this hands-on class Yasuko will demonstrate the proper way to prepare tea and then each participant will be able to brew their own two different types of Taiwan tea: Alpine Oolong (Four Seasons Spring Flower Oolong) and Honey-flavored Black Tea. You will learn the correct amount of tea to use, the best type of tea pot (yes, this does affect the taste of your tea), and how long to let your tea steep to make that perfect cup of Taiwan tea. Some light tea snacks to enhance your enjoyment of these teas will also be served.

Historic Pingxi: Coal Mines, Old Streets and a Magnificent Waterfall

Thu Nov 19 1 8:30am - 3:30pm

$1600 or$1850

Corner of Zhong Shan N. Rd. Sec. 6 and Lane 290

Helen Chen

The first stop on this tour is the beautiful Shifen Waterfall, the widest in Taiwan and nicknamed Taiwan’s Niagara Falls. It’s a great place to enjoy the beautiful scenery and take some striking photos. The next stop of the day is the Taiwan Coal Museum, established on the old site of an actual coal mine that began operations in 1965. At the Museum we will be able to see how coal was extracted underground, sorted through a series of conveyor belts, and transported through the tracks of the Pingxi Line that merges into the main Taiwan railway system. For lunch, you may bring your own or you may purchase a special miners’ lunchbox, complete with a metal lunchbox, handkerchief and stainless steel chopsticks to keep as a souvenir of our day. (Must be reserved in advance.) From the Museum we will ride the little coal train to our last stop, Shifen Old Town, where we will have some free time to walk around, browse the shops or send up a sky lantern where the well-known tradition originated. (We will introduce you to a vendor who offers eco-friendly lanterns--this is optional and at your own cost). Accompanying us on our tour will be Mr. San-Yuan Lin, formerly of the Chunghwa Telecom Foundation and Microsoft. Mr. Lin grew up in Pingxi and is very knowledgeable of its history, geography and people. Following his retirement, he passed the street entertainer license test and has promoted the art of straw weaving, a skill he learned from his mother. Affectionately known as the “Straw Weaver CEO,” Mr. Lin will be our insider guide to Shifen. Transportation, special guide and entrance fees included.

14Hiking the Baoshan Trail to Elephant Mountain

Tue Nov 24 1 9:00am - 1:00pm $800

Yongchun MRT Sta., Exit 4

Jennifer Turek

This moderately strenuous hike begins at the Yongchun MRT Station and takes us up to the top of Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain) for some stunning views of Taipei city below. Led by Jennifer, the first part of the trip is easy and offers some very nice scenery of flowers, streams and rock cliffs. But that is just our warm up. Starting from the Baoshan trailhead (about 20 minutes walk from the MRT), we will climb up some stairs and work our way up until we reach the beautiful Tianbao Temple. At the temple we will be able to see a huge statue carved into the cliff side. Then, we will climb some steep stone steps to the top of Elephant Mountain, catch our breath and enjoy a panoramic view of Taipei 101. We then make our descent down some very steep steps and walk to the Xiangshan MRT station. Sturdy shoes with a good grip are essential. A hiking pole may help with the steps. Bring water, snacks and sun/rain/insect protection.

15 YouBike Ride: Xinpu to Bitan Wed Dec 02 1 9:30am -

1:00pm $700 Xinpu MRT Sta., Exit 1 Dory Chung

Join Dory for a scenic 20K bike ride along some of Taipei’s lovely riverside trails. We begin this trip at the Xinpu MRT Station where we will rent our YouBikes and ride about 1km over to the riverside area. We will follow a bike trail along the Dahah Stream, passing some creative wall paintings along the way. We connect to the Xindian Stream at the Huajiang Bridge and then pass under the Huazhong Bridge. Thousand Year Feast at the Ningxia Night Market, Plus a Walking Tour of Chifeng Street

Thu Dec 03 1 5:30pm - 8:30pm $1100

Zhongshan MRT Sta., Exit 5

Helen Chen

The night market is a culinary must-eat destination in Taiwan. The biggest challenge is: how to possibly enjoy all the delicious food in a single visit? Challenge solved! The vendors at Taipei’s historic Ningxia Night Market have teamed up to create the “Thousand Year Feast,” where guests can enjoy 20 different small eats - each from a different stall. The menu rotates from one night to the next, but includes dishes like braised pork on rice, oyster omelet, fried rice vermicelli, drinks, and desserts. Each vendor has been in business for over 50 years; multiply that by 20 dishes and you have one thousand years of experience and deliciousness! Included is a walking tour of trendy Chifeng Street, historically known for its smithies, and more recently, a place to buy auto parts. Today, it is a hipster neighborhood filled with creative handicraft and food stores. Please note: special dietary restrictions cannot be accommodated on this tour.

The trail is narrow and we recommend long pants because it could be a bit overgrown. After we reach Mt. Dinghu the trail becomes wider and there are many steps. Although it is hard work to climb up all the stairs, the forest is beautiful (about 2.5km with 200m ascending and 200m descending). When we get to Mt. Zhongzheng we will have an amazing view as our reward. From this vantage point, we can see Mt. Qixing, which is the highest mountain in Taipei, as well as Mt. Shamao. After some time to rest and eat our lunch, we will go down by stairs (380m descending) and walk to catch our bus back to the MRT. The total distance of this hike is about 5.1km with 470m ascending and 580m descending. Chinese Medicine: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Acupuncture but Didn't Know Who to Ask

Tue Dec 8 1 12:30pm - 2:00pm $600 The Center Dr. Dustin Wu

Acupuncture and moxibustion have played an important health care role in Chinese society for over 4000 years. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a product of observing nature and direct experience. Before there were codified systems of medicinal practice, people would instinctively hit or massage an afflicted area to feel better. Over many generations these areas or “points” became more clearly identified, and over time, research and training methods developed and refined. In this century, these two main methods of TCM have received an increasing amount of international recognition and are used to treat a variety of medical conditions including pain relief, eliminating inflammation and swelling, organ function enhancement and calming of the nervous system, among many other things. In many western countries acupuncture is most often used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Have you been curious about trying acupuncture as a possible treatment but didn't know if it might be the right choice for you? Would you like to know how it works? Is it safe? Does it hurt? Then join this informative class with Dr. Wu and learn everything you may have always wanted to know about acupuncture but didn't know who to ask.
