University is the third (tertiary) level of education in Australia, where you can focus on studying for your chosen career.

Qualifications available at universities are known as ‘degrees’ - for example, a Bachelor degree, Master’s degree or Doctorate.

Some universities also offer Certificates, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas while some TAFE institutes and private training colleges offer Certificates and Diplomas that you can build towards a degree.

These non-degree qualifications can provide an alternative pathway to university if you don’t get the required Year 12 results to go straight into a Bachelor degree.

H O W I S A D E G R E E S T R U C T U R E D ?

School-leavers will enrol in an undergraduate Bachelor degree or Diploma.

BACHELOR DEGREEAn undergraduate award of 24 subjects which is commonly the entry qualification for many professions or further study. Each subject has a value of 10 credit points (cps). Some subjects may only be worth 5cps; others may be worth 20cps if they involve a major industry project or thesis.

Ultimately, the value of subjects successfully completed will need to total 240cps for a standard Bachelor degree. (Exceptions includeBachelor of Laws and our Medical Program^.)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSAdmission to a Bachelor degree is based on Year 12 academic results (OP, ATAR, IB or equivalent) or on the completion of a recognised pathway program.

From 2020, the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) will replace the Overall Position (OP) as the pathway to tertiary study for Queensland Year 12.

The ATAR will be introduced for students commencing Year 11 in 2019, who will graduate in 2020 and seek entry to tertiary programs from 2021. This will bring Queensland in line with other Australian states and territories.

DIPLOMADiplomas are non-degree offerings which are offered in practical and occupational fields of study.

A Diploma can also be completed as a pathway for students who do not meet the academic requirements for direct entry into their chosen Bachelor degree.

CORE SUBJECTSEvery undergraduate degree (excluding Medical Program^) at Bond includes our three University Core subjects that will help you develop the key transferable skills that will help prepare you for the careers of the future:• Critical Thinking and Communication• Ethical Thought and Action• Leadership and Team Dynamics

^The Medical Program is comprised of two sequential degrees – the Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMedSt) and the Doctor of Medicine (MD). All students selected for entry into the Medical Program will have to complete both the BMedSt and MD to be eligible for registration as a medical practitioner in any state or territory in Australia or New Zealand. Both degrees are awarded at the completion of Year 5.

BEYOND BONDThe University-wide Core subjects are underpinned by Beyond Bond – a unique professional and personal development program only available here at Bond University and a compulsory element of every Bond undergraduate degree.

Run by our Career Development Centre, it encourages students to become involved in extracurricular activities and extension programs such as volunteering, community leadership, internships, industry projects, competitions and more.

It also incorporates career guidance and planning to ensure every Bond graduate has the ambition, drive and strategy to achieve their goals in life.

FOUNDATION SUBJECTS AND ELECTIVESEach degree will comprise a specified number of compulsory foundation subjects and electives.

In many cases, Bond allows electives to be chosen from any Faculty, enabling you to design your degree to suit your individual career ambitions or personal interests.

MAJORS, MINORS AND DOUBLE MAJORSA major is a cluster of six elective subjects selected from one area of specialisation, a minor is three subjects and a double major is 12 subjects.

COMBINED DEGREESBond’s accelerated schedule inspires many students to undertake a combined degree.

Bachelor of Laws combinations are particularly popular, with the Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws taking just 3 years and 8 months (11 semesters).

Undergraduate-postgraduate pathways are also in demand. A Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Accounting can be completed in 3 years 4 months (10 semesters).

This is just one more reason why Bond graduates stand out from the crowd - you could graduate with two degrees in the same time it takes for others to complete one.

TEACHING STYLEWhen it comes to class, you’ll discover that there’s a big difference between a university like Bond with less than 5,000 students, and a big campus where you’ll be one of 50,000!

Our lectures and tutorials are delivered live and in person – not via video-link to a separate lecture hall because the first one is full; or live-streamed to an empty room because everyone is watching online.

Our classes are dynamic and discussion-based; it’s about listening, learning, forming your opinion and sharing it with others. You can’t do that by attending classes remotely or studying alone at home.

STUDY FACILITIESEven outside of class times, we encourage our students to spend time on campus; working with fellow classmates in study groups and on team assignments. This is where lifelong friendships start – and we have some great study spaces to help that happen, such as our collaborative Multimedia Learning Centre with LCD screens, meeting

tables and game consoles; our general and law libraries; and our computer labs with both Mac and PC monitors.

There are also plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants where our students love to get together to socialise on campus.

REAL WORLD EXPERIENCESome subjects also incorporate practical training where you will get to work with a company or organisation in your chosen field. Your practical experience may be in the form of an internship, clinical placement, industry project, work placement, international study tour or even attending an industry conference, ensuring that you become ready for the workplace before you even graduate.

As a full-time uni student, you will usually complete four subjects per semester. As such, completing a 24-subject Bachelor degree will take six semesters – which equals two years at Bond under our accelerated three-semesters-per-year timetable, or three years at most other universities.

Independent study to do more reading and research on the subject and complete various assignments.

Lectures presented by our world-renowned academics.

Tutorials of small groups where you can discuss the lecture material in more detail.

Bond has a real community feel and vibrant student social life.

L I F E O N C A M P U S

Our Bondies say that you’ll know everyone in your classes by the end of the first week and almost everyone on campus by the end of your first semester.

A lot of that has to do with our campus clubs and societies.

Signing up to our special interest groups helps you meet people that you have something in common with. From bushwalking and photography to book clubs, vocal groups and the Student Philanthropy Club (which organises trips to Kununurra during the semester break for our students to work with Save the Children Australia), you’ll have lots of options to fill your social calendar.

If you love your sport, there are plenty of sporting clubs to join – rugby union, swimming, cricket, athletics, golf… you name it. We’ve even got cheerleading and snow sports groups.

Our clubs and societies are run by the Bond University Student Association (BUSA) and they hold a big sign-on day each semester where you can learn more about what’s on offer.

There are also plenty of general social events – including free student barbeque lunches by the lake every Wednesday, Res Wars for students living in our on-campus accommodation and Thursday nights at Don’s Tavern.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTRETo do this, we have a Career Development Centre (CDC) right here on campus.

Our Employment Services Specialists connect with every student from early on in your degree to help you find internships and work experience placements, as well as part-time and holiday employment.

As graduation approaches, you can talk to them about career planning, resume writing, job applications and interview preparation.The CDC also has a team of Business Development Specialists who work with prospective employers, encouraging them to give Bond recruits first preference.

IT’S ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOWOne of the main reasons why we encourage and help our students to secure internships and work placements throughout their degree is that it puts you in front of potential employers and gives them a chance to see what you are capable of.

Similarly, going to industry conferences or being part of international competitions gives you the chance to meet industry leaders and influencers who may be able to help you find your dream job.

You’ll also build relationships with your Bond professors and fellow students that will last long after you finish university and will become the foundation of your professional network.

A key priority for us at Bond is to make sure our graduates have the knowledge, skills and personal attributes that will make them stand out in the workforce. We call this ‘graduate employability’.

WORK EXPERIENCEStart building up your resume by looking for work experience, community service and / or volunteering opportunities. Sporting, cultural and other extracurricular activities will also help you stand out to future employers.

GAINING INDEPENDENCEUniversity is not like school where teachers monitor attendance and chase up homework. You will need to manage your own timetable and study schedule, making sure you get your assignments in on time. A big part of this is knowing when to reach out for help. If you don’t understand what’s required, be sure to ask questions and find out who the right person is to give you more information.

MANAGING YOUR MONEYAnother key aspect of being independent is being able to support yourself financially. Ask your parents for some lessons in budgeting – how much will you need to cover rent, food, electricity, clothing, entertainment, transport, internet, phone and other living costs? And don’t forget your text books and study materials!

FUNDING YOUR STUDIESIf you’re an Australian citizen or Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder, you may be eligible for an interest-free student loan through FEE-HELP, HECS-HELP or VET FEE-HELP. You should also look into AUSTUDY and ABSTUDY to see if they can help offset your living costs.

SCHOLARSHIPSEducational institutions, community organisations and even some government departments offer scholarships to cover all or part of your tuition fees. They are usually looking for school-leavers who have an outstanding record for academic, sporting and / or community achievement, but there are also a range of equity scholarships available.

MOVING AWAY FROM HOMEIt probably sounds like a big step right now but living on campus at university will be more fun than you can imagine. You’ll be with lots of other new students who are also moving out of home for the first time and you’ll make friends from all over the world. Just make sure you’re responsible enough to look after yourself and manage your studies.

As you enter the last years of high school, take some time to think about your future and how you can prepare for the next phase of your life.
