NEW LOOK COACHING STAFFAfter a down year in 2019, the Titans and Head Coach Rick Vanderhook come back with a revamped coaching staff. Vanderhook put the Big West Conference and the country on notice when he went out and hired one of the best recruiters in the country, Sergio Brown, to be the associ-ate head coach. Brown spent the last four seasons at the University of Arizona where he brought in the two top-five recruiting classes. Brown won a national championship with the Titans as a player in 1995. Brown returns for his third stint as a coach at Cal State Fullerton after serving on the staff from 2001-03 and 2007-10.

Just one week later, Dan Ricabal was added to the staff as the Titans new pitching coach. Ricabal spend the past three years at Long Beach State where he helped lead the pitching staff to the seventh best ERA in the country in 2017. Ricabal played two seasons at Cal State Fullerton from 1993-94. As a senior he helped lead the Titans to the College World Series in Omaha and finished the season with a 12-1 record, giving him the ninth best winning percentage in a single season in the history of the program. Over his two-year career Ricabal finished with a 23-4 record which ranks seventh all-time in career winning percentage.

Vanderhook and the Titans then added Andy Jenkins as the team’s volun-teer assistant coach. Jenkins spent the past last seven years as an assis-tant coach at Oregon State where he helped lead the team to a national championship in 2018. Jenkins also won a national championship as a player at Oregon State in 2006.

JUST LIKE ‘92?It’s no secret, in 2019 Cal State Fullerton missed the postseason for the first time since 1991, breaking the second longest streak in the country for most consecutive postseason apperances. But as Hooky said, “streaks are meant to be broken and all we can do now is start a new streak.” After missing the postseason in 1991 the Titans bounced back in a big way in 1992 as they were right back where they belonged, playing for the Na-tional Championship in Omaha. The 2020 Titans will look to respond from missing the postseason 2019 the same way the 1992 Titan responded.

ONE STREAK STILL STANDSWhile the Titans did miss the postseason in 2019, breaking a 27 year streak of consecutive appearnaces while also breaking the streak of 30 win seasons. Fullerton still is one of the programs in the country to never have a losing season. Since the program entered Div. I in 1975, it has gone over .500 every single year.

DEPTH ON THE MOUNDIn 2019 the Titans had their struggles on the mound with a very young pitching staff. Freshman and sophmores pitched 369.8 innings of the 468 total innings thrown last year. 2020 will see a much more experienced staff take the mound with starters such as Michael Knorr, Joe Magrisi and Kyle Luckham having another year of experience under their belt. Along with relievers Titus Groeneweg, Michael Weisberg. The Titans only lost two pitchers from last year’s squad in Gavin Velasquez and Jimmy Ender-sby who threw a combined 47.1 innings.

Knorr was the Saturday starter throughout much of the season in 2019, finishing the year with a 5.90 ERA in 61 innings pitched to go along with a record of 4-4. Even though he finished the year with a .500 record, the team was 7-4 when Knorr started on the mound.

Luckham was in and out of the starting rotation throughout the sea-son, starting six games and finishing the year with a 4-6 record. Look for Luckham to also have a big impact at the plate this year for the Titans. Luckham will likely come out of the pen for the Titans as a late reliever or closer.

Magrisi had to work back from an injury during the 2019 season, leading to him only pitching 21.1 innings throughout the year. Magrisi had a fan-tastic summer, pitching in the West Coast League with the Yakima Valley Pippins where he was named Pitcher of the week two times while making the all-star game with a 0.63 ERA along with 53 strikeouts.

In addition to the experience of the young arm talent, the Titans have ace Tanner Bibee back for his junior year in what will likely be his last season at Cal State Fullerton. Bibee is ranked as the No. 146 college prospect by D1 Baseball going into the 2020 MLB Draft.

2020 TITAN BASEBALL

HELP FROM THE PENThe Titans depth on the mound continues into the bullpen where they have several returning relievers. Seniors Dillon Brown and Matthew Sancehz headline the pen with two of the lowest ERA’s from last season. Brown finished the 2019 season with a 2.06 ERA while Sanchez had a staggering 0.93 ERA.

Titus Groeneweg is another talented freshman returning with more experinece under his belt and looks to have an expanded reliever role. Groeneweg showed his growth this summer in the West Coast League where he was named Pitcher of the Week one time while also earning a trip to the all-star game. With the Portland Pickles, Groeneweg went 1-0 and finished with a 3.85 ERA.

Top closer from a year ago, Michael Weisberg, also returns for his sopho-more season. Weisberg started off the year on fire before slowing down a bit later in the year. In his first five apperance, Weisberg had a 1.50 ERA with a 1-0 record and two saves while only allowing four hits.

SOPHOMORE STUDSThe Titans look to last year’s No. 18 ranked recruiting class to have even more of an impact on the team in 2020. In addition to the previous mentioned sophomore pitchers, Fullerton returns talented field players Kameron Guangorena, Jason Brandow, Jackson Lyon and Zach Lew.

Guangorena showed flashes throughout the year of why he was one of the most highly-touted high school prospects in 2018. The second year catcher finished the year with a .261 batting average along with 26 RBI and 30 runs. Guangorena was drafted in the 38th round by Toronto Blue Jays coming out of high school.

Right away Brandow showed off his power at the plate, bombing a grand slam in his very first collegiate at-bat and against defending national champions Vanderbilt. Brandow finished his freshman campaign hitting .256 with 15 RBI and 18 runs. Coming out of high school Brandow was taken in the 22nd round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jackson Lyon started off the year on fire before being plagued by an injury that kept him to playing only 14 games his freshman season. In his first six games of the year, Lyon hit .353 with four runs, two RBI and two walks.

Lew might have been the biggest surprise of the highly touted freshman

• Fullerton’s streak of eight consecutive Regional victories came to an end in 2011, but won its 23rd Regional title in 2018. Overall it has won 23 Regional titles – including a national best 13 on the road (two each in Fresno, Baton Rouge and Stanford and one each at USC, Austin, Starkville, Stillwater, South Bend, Tempe, San Diego). The Titans NEVER hosted a regional before 2000 but have since hosted 12 at home (10-2) – they lost the first (USC, 2000) and won eight in a row before being eliminated by Illinois in 2011. In 2015, they went 3-0 at the Fullerton Regional, defeating No. 4 seed Pepperdine twice and No. 2 seed Arizona State.

• The Titans have NEVER gone winless in Regional play., the only program with more than 38+ appearances (8 total) to do so. They have gone 0-2 only twice in a Super Regional (2008 & 2013) and seven times in Omaha (1975, 1982, 1990, 2007, 2009, 2015 and 2017).

• The Titans’ all-time NCAA record is 165-89 (.646) including in Regional (106-43, .711); Super Regional (21-14, .625) play and 34-31 (.523) in Omaha. The Titans’ CWS appearance in 2017 was their 18th, which is now tied with LSU for seventh most. Fullerton is ranked No. 2 in the Super Regional Era (since 1999), making nine appearances in Omaha. (LSU, North Carolina, Rice, South Carolina and Stanford have made six). Miami has made seven.

class. In his first year out of Orange Lutheran High School, Lew hit .313, which ranked fifth on the team, with 16 RBI and 24 runs to go along with three home runs. Lew had a coming out party against USC early in the year, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run while recording three RBI and four runs.

IMPROVING AT THE PLATEFullerton has improved its batting average each of the last three seasons while making a big jump in 2019, going from a .269 average in 2018 to a .289 average in 2019. The Titans .289 average last year was the highest average since 2010 when the team hit .337.

TITANS SHINE IN LATE INNINGSCal State Fullerton’s offense has been clutch in late innings as they have scored 45 runs in the sixth inning, 52 runs in the seventh, 40 in the eighth and 19 in the ninth. The Titans 52 runs in the seventh is the most out of any inning while the pitching staff has only allowed 10 runs in the seventh. Ful-lerton has outscored its opponents 156 to 83 in the final four innings of play.

REPLACING BERRYHILLSenior Mitchell Berryhill was nothing short of spectacular for the Titans in 2019. Berryhill led the team with a .415 batting average which ranked fourth in the entire country. With his .415 average, Berryhill ranks fifth all-time for the highest batting average in a single season in the history of the program. The senior led the team with 25 multi hit games and was fourth on the team in multi RBI games with seven leading to a total of 27 RBI. In Big West Confer-ence play in 2019, Berryhill is hit .409 with 11 RBI and 13 walks to go along with a .500 on-base percentage and a .495 slugging percentage.

The Utah native had 47 game on-base streak dating back to the 2018 season snapped in the third game of the series against UCI. The streak was the longest active streak in the country and was the third longest streak in 2019 behind teammate Hank LoForte (64) and Vanderbilt’s JJ Bleday (47).

In the Titans three-game series against Cal Poly, Berryhill had a next to per-fect weekend as he went 10-for-12 at the plate (.833) with four walks and a hit by pitch to reach base in 15 out of 17 plate appearances. The senior had at least three hits in every game while also recording a career-high four hits in Saturday’s game. Berryhill reached base safely in his final 12 plate ap-pearances. The Utah native earned his first Big West Field Player of the Week honor after his performance against the Mustangs.

FILLING THE GAPSThe Titans have more to replace in the lineup than just Mitchell Berryhill. Replacing top-notch field players like shortstop Sahid Valenzuela, sec-ond baseman Hank LoForte, catcher Daniel Cope and first baseman Jake Pavletich. Both Valenzuela and Cope were drafted in the 2019 MLB Draft, being taken in the 13th round by the Oakland Athletics and Colorado Rockies, respectively. Fullerton did have a jump on preparing for the loss of Valenzuela and Cope as Valenzuela missed the last 14 games of the season while Cope missed the last 13 games.

FULLERTON’S FANTASTIC FIELDINGCal State Fullerton has always been known for its defense and the 2019 season was nothing different. The Titans are currently ranked ninth in country in fielding with a .980 fielding percentage with only 39 errors on the season.

DAY N’ NIGHTThroughout the 2019 season the Titans have played much better in day games as opposed to playing under the lights. In day games last year, Fullerton was 16-8 with a .320 batting average while 15 of the Titans 20 home runs were in day games. Fullerton had nine players that are hitting over .300 when playing in day games opposed to just three when playing in night games. The Titans record in night games in 2019 was 11-18 while the batters hit just .263 at the plate. Tanner Bibee was brilliant in the four day games he started throughout the 2019 season with a 2-0 record and 3.63 ERA to go along with 16 strikeouts.

GARCIA’S GREATNESS First-year transfer Isaiah Garcia has been instrumental for the Titans offense in 2019. Early in the season against Arizona State and New Mexico, Garcia went 8-for-15 hitting .533 with five RBI and five runs while recording a double and his first Division I home run. Garcia finished the 2019 season second on the team with a .323 batting average along with a .394 on-base percentage and a .437 slugging percentage. Garcia’s .323 batting average ranked 10th in the Big West Conference. The senior finished his first Div. I season with a team-high 39 RBI.

TITANS IN THE BIG LEAGUESThe Titans have had 67 former players ascend to the major leagues since their first products, Dan Whitmer and Tim Wallach, got there in 1980. Nick Ramirez and Thomas Eshelman made their MLB debuts in 2019, becoming the 66th and 67th Titans, respec-tively, to make it to the show.

DRAFTED TITANSFullerton had two players taken in the 2019 MLB draft as Daniel Cope and Sahid Va-lenzuela were taken in the 13th round. Cope was taken 399th overall by the Colorado Rockies while Valenzuela was taken just a few picks later with the 404th pick by the Oakland A’s. With the two players taken last year, the Titans have now had at least one player taken in the MLB Drafter for 45 consecutvie years. In total, the Titans have had 308 players drafted.

PRESEASON POLLSEven after a tough season where the Titans missed the postseason for the first time in 28 years, heading into the 2020 season Cal State Fullerton has been picked to finish first in the Big West Conference by the conference coaches in the preseason coaches poll, along with D1 Baseball and Perfect Game.

BY THE NUMBERSHONORS

After two seasons at the helm of the Cal State Fullerton baseball program, head coach Rick Vanderhook quickly ingrained a hard-working philosophy, and he was rewarded with a five-year contract extension through the 2018 season on April 15, 2013. He signed a contract revision on Oct. 13, 2015 which extended his deal through the 2019 season and included an increase in base pay as well as an increased bonus structure for him and his coaching staff. It also included an automatic extension clause contingent on the Titans reaching the NCAA Super Regional round, which was accomplished in 2017 as Fullerton advanced all the way to Omaha. The appearance marked the team’s 18th trip to the College World Series and the second over the last three seasons under Vanderhook.

Fullerton then signed Vanderhook to a five-year contract extension through the 2023 season prior to the start of the 2019 season after the team made the Super Regional once again in 2018.

The 2019 season was his 29th year as a Titan, and his eighth as the program’s skipper.

During the past seven years, Vanderhook has won five Big West Conference championships, garnered five Big West Coach of the Year awards and has guided the Titans to seven straight NCAA postseason appearances. The Titans made their 18th appearance in the NCAA College World Series in 2017 after also leading Fullerton to Omaha in 2015, ending a five-year drought which was the longest in program history.

The individual success hasn’t hindered the team success, as Vanderhook’s head coaching record stands at 298-178 (.626) through the 2019 season.

The 2017 campaign proved to be one of the best coaching jobs of Vanderhook’s career, as he guided a an injury riddled Titan squad back to CWS with an overall record of 39-24, despite serious injuries to preseason All-American pitcher Colton Eastman and slugger Ruben Cardenas. Eastman suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out nearly four months, while Cardenas went through a lower back injury that eventually ended his season.

Fullerton advanced to the NCAA Postseason for the 26th straight season and recorded a 30-win season for the 43rd straight year.

The only thing better than seeing the Titans make the coveted trip to Omaha, was the fact that they were able to knock off long-time rival Long Beach State at Blair Field in the Super Regional round on the way there. The Titans claimed back-to-back wins over LBSU after dropping six of the first seven head-to-head contests vs. them during 2017.

In all, the skipper coached seven athletes to All-Big West honors, including five first teamers in Scott Hurst, Sahid Valenzuela, Brett Conine, Connor Seabold and Dillon Persinger. Valenzuela was also named the league’s Big West Freshman of the Year. Seabold was named to Collegiate Baseball’s All-American Second Team, while Conine was placed on the publication’s third team. He also was a finalist for the Gregg Olson Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top closer.

In 2016, Vanderhook earned his fourth Big West Conference Coach of the Year award in five seasons. He led the Titans to a 36-23 record during the season and a Big West Conference title, the 21st in the program’s history and his fourth in five years.

In 2015, Vanderhook was named the American Baseball Coaches Association West Region Coach of the Year. There have been 32 Titans selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in Vanderhook’s six seasons at Fullerton, including seven more in 2017. He has also coached 20 All-Americans and 11 Big West Conference Player of the Year honorees, including the Freshman of the Year in 2017 (Sahid Valenzuela), the Field Player of the Year (Dalton Blaser) and Freshman Pitcher of the Year (Colton Eastman) in 2016.

Vanderhook also led the Titans to a 51-10 record in 2013, the second best winning percentage (.836) in program history, trailing only the national championship squad from 1995 (57-9, .864). The 51 wins were also the fourth most in program history.

In six years, Vanderhook has led the Titans to four conference titles, three Super Regionals appearances and two College World Series appearances. He reached 100 head coaching victories on March 23, 2014 against Long Beach State at Goodwin Field, becoming the second fastest coach in Titans history to reach the mark, doing so in 139 games, four more than Titans legendary coach Augie Garrido.

On June 24, 2011, Vanderhook was announced as the program’s fifth Division I head coach. He will enter his 27th season with the Titan baseball program in 2018, as he’s surpassed Garrido as the longest-serving baseball coach in school history.

Prior to being named the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, in 24 seasons as a Division I assistant coach (21 at Fullerton), Vanderhook accumulated a total of 12 conference championships, 20 postseason appearances, eight Super Regionals appearances, 11 trips to the College World Series and two national championships.

Vanderhook spent the better part of a quarter century under head coaches Garrido, Larry Cochell and George Horton.

He began his coaching career as an assistant to Garrido from 1985-87, serving as the bullpen coach for the first two years before stepping into the third base coaching box and working with the hitters and defense in 1987. He remained on staff in 1988 under Cochell but then spent two seasons (1989-1990) as an assistant to former Fullerton assistant coach Bill Kernen at Cal State Northridge. Vanderhook returned to Cal State Fullerton with Garrido in 1991 and remained through the 2007 season.

Vanderhook then spent three seasons (2009-11) as an assistant coach to John Savage at UCLA, where he helped lead the Bruins to a conference title, a pair of postseason appearances and a runner-up finish at the 2010 College World Series.

A product of the prominent Cerritos College program where he played for Horton, Vanderhook originally came to the Titans in 1983 when he took a redshirt season. He was a member of the Titans’ 1984 national championship team, earning his first of three Cal State Fullerton championship rings.

Vanderhook prepped at Lakewood High School and received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Trinity University in 2003.

Vanderhook and his wife, April, reside in Yorba Linda, Calif., with their daughters, Noelle and Autumn, and their son, R.J.

CAL STATE FULLERTON BASEBALL / NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1979, 1984, 1995, 2004

After spending the last four years at the University of Arizona, Sergio Brown returns to Cal State Fullerton for his third stint as a coach. Brown serves as the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.

“We are very excited to welcome Sergio (Brown) back to the Titan family,” Vanderhook said. “He’s proven himself to be one of the top coaches and recruiters in the country. His knowledge of the game and the West Coast will be a huge asset for our program.”

Brown, who won a national championship as a player with the Titans in 1995, returns for his third stint as a coach after serving on the staff in 2001-03 and 2007-10.

“I am honored to have been offered the opportunity to become associate head coach of the Cal State Fullerton baseball program and return home. My wife Olivia and I know that our foundation was built around the great education we both received at Cal State Fullerton. Our lives have been enriched by the doors that have been opened to us because of our alma mater. We are thrilled to wear the Titan pinstripes once again.”

“I would like to thank President Virjee, Athletics Director Jim Donovan and Senior Associate Athletics Director Steve DiTolla for working to make this all happen. Most of all I would like to thank Rick Vanderhook. Rick is my former coach, a mentor and a true friend. I am honored that a coach with over 30 years of National Championship pedigree has entrusted me to be a part of his coaching staff. Each of my three previous stops here have led to trips to Omaha and I cannot wait to see this year’s Titans touch the ‘1,544 Miles to Omaha’ at Goodwin Field.”

In his time at Cal State Fullerton, the Titans won three Big West championships in 2001, 2008 and 2010 and finished seventh at the 2009 College World Series. Brown helped lead the Titans to three Super Regionals and 14 total postseason wins.

As the recruiting coordinator in 2009, he boasted the nation’s fifth-best class, while in 2010 his group was ranked eighth and in 2008 it was tabbed 14th nationally. During his final two seasons at Fullerton, Titan hitters led the Big West in batting average, hits, runs, RBI, on-base percentage and sacrifice bunts.

In his second stint at Fullerton, Brown helped develop

11 All-Americans, seven All-Conference players, and numerous student-athletes that have since gone on to log over 1,000 games of Major League Baseball experience. The program excelled on defense during his time with the Titans as well - the 2008, 2009, and 2010 squads all posted fielding percentages that rank among the top 10 marks in school history.

Brown also played an instrumental part in the Titans 2010 offense that went down as one of the best in school history, ranking among the top 10 years in program history in batting average (2nd), triples (T-2nd), hits per game (3rd), slugging percentage (6th), and total bases (7th).

Brown comes back to Fullerton after spending four seasons at Arizona where his second recruiting class in 2016 was ranked No. 4 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball while his recruiting class in 2018 was ranked No. 3 in the country by Collegiate Baseball.

Under Brown’s tutelage, numerous Wildcat position players have been tabbed with All-American honors by an array of national publications including: Zach Gibbons (2016), Cody Ramer (2016), JJ Matijevic (2017), Alfonso Rivas (2017), Jared Oliva (2017), Nick Quintana (2017, 2019), and Cameron Cannon (2019).

Brown’s work with the hitters helped shape the Wildcats 2019 offense that ranked as one of the most potent in the country. Arizona’s offense averaged 9.8 runs per game, the second-best mark in the nation and the best mark posted by an Arizona team since the 1975 team averaged 10.07.

Arizona finished 2019 season ranked second in the nation in slugging percentage and on-base percentage and third in batting average. In addition to spectacular team numbers, multiple players also thrived - Quintana led the Pac-12 during the regular season with 77 RBI while Cannon finished the year leading all Division I players in the nation with 29 doubles.

2020 TITAN BASEBALL CAL STATE FULLERTON GAME NOTES

Former Long Beach State top assistant/pitching coach Dan Ricabal joined the Cal State Fullerton baseball program as its new pitching coach, head coach Rick Vanderhook announced on Sept. 25, 2017.

In his role as pitching coach for the Titans, Ricabal will help develop, mentor and coach the Titans both on and off the field, as well as assist in recruiting.

“We are lucky to be able to add someone with the knowledge and experience that ‘Rico’ (Dan Ricabal) has to our coaching staff,” Vanderhook said. “He definitely knows the rich history we have of great pitchers at Cal State Fullerton from his time as a Titan and will be a great addition to this program.”

Ricabal brings coaching experience at multiple levels of baseball, having coached in the junior college ranks, at multiple Division I programs along the West Coast, and within the minor league system of the Los Angeles Angels.

After beginning his college career at Cerritos, Ricabal came to Cal State Fullerton in 1993 and immediately proved to be a standout pitcher. He lead the team in wins as a junior with 11 and while also leading the team in strikeouts with 106.

Following his outstanding career as a Titan, Ricabal was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994 and pitched a handful of seasons in the minor leagues. He then turned to coaching in 2000, serving as the pitching coach at College of the Canyons.

In 2001, Ricabal returned to Fullerton as an administrative assistant, then spent the next three seasons at UC Santa Barbara as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. From there, he moved to the Angles minor league system, where he would spend six years as a pitching coach at various levels of the organization. During his time with the Angles, Ricabal coached a number of future big leaguers like Garrett Richards, Jordan Walden, Tyler Chatwood, Sean O’Sullivan, Trevor Bell and others.

Ricabal oversaw a record-setting season on the mound

for Long Beach State pitchers in 2018, led by First Team All-Big West selection Clayton Andrews. LBSU pitchers earned eight of the 15 Big West Pitcher of the Week awards during the season, with Andrews claiming five by himself and each of the last four awards given. Under Ricabal’s tutelage, Andrews finished the season with a 1.99 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 99.2 innings pitched, becoming the first Dirtbags pitchers since Jered Weaver in 2004 to lead LBSU in ERA, innings pitched, and strikeouts in the same season.

In his first season with the Dirtbags, Ricabal guided a successful Dirtbags pitching staff that had a team ERA of 3.07 and produced a pair of All-Americans in starters Darren McCaughan and Dave Smith. LBSU ranked second in the country in shutouts with 12, third in WHIP with a mark of 1.12, and seventh in the country in ERA in 2017. McCaughan was named Big West Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season, and Smith and closer Chris Rivera were tabbed second team All-Big West selections.

During his tenure at LMU, Ricabal’s pitching staffs posted Top-10 LMU season ERAs in each of his five years. Ricabal is also responsible for developing four of LMU’s Top-10 best individual season ERAs, including Sean Watkins’ 1.89 in 2015 (third-best) and Colin Welmon’s 2.30 ERA in 2013 (sixth-best). Prior to Watkins and Welmon, no Lion pitcher had turned in a sub-2.31 ERA in a season since 1971. Training under Ricabal throughout his four-year career, Welmon posted the third-best ERA in LMU history (2.82).

CAL STATE FULLERTON BASEBALL / NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1979, 1984, 1995, 2004

Andy Jenkins joins the Cal State Fullerton baseball staff after seven seasons at Oregon State as an assistant coach. Jenkins helped lead the beavers to the programs third national championship in 2018.

Jenkins played two seasons at Oregon State, helping guide the Beavers to the 2005 College World Series. He played professional baseball for the Florida Marlins and Texas Rangers organizations before returning to Corvallis as an undergraduate assistant coach in 2012.

Jenkins lettered for the Beavers in 2004 and 2005, helping guide the team to its first visit to the College World Series in more than 50 years his junior season.

Jenkins, a native of Salem, Ore., was also the most prolific Beaver offensively during the team’s postseason run. He batted .459 - leading the team by more than 100 points - and tallied two home runs, two doubles and 13 RBI while slugging .784.

His .388 average as a senior in 2005 still stands as the 10th-best figure in team history. He also had 56 runs batted in that season.

He ended his two-year Oregon State career having played in 98 games, batting .343 with 12 home runs, 15 doubles, 86 RBI and 41 walks while striking out just 44 in more than 340 at bats. His .343 career average is just shy of being in the top 10 for a career at Oregon State.

After his Oregon State career, Jenkins was selected in the 11th round of the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Florida. He played six seasons in the Minor Leagues with Florida and Texas, reaching the Triple-A level in 2009 and 2010. His six-year career saw him tally 2,341 plate appearances and he batted .268 with 32 home runs, 116 doubles, eight triples and 277 RBI.

Jenkins came to Oregon State after a two-year career at Mt. Hood Community College where he batted .358 as a sophomore, and as a freshman, was named first-team all-league at catcher.

Jenkins graduated from Oregon State with a degree in psychology in 2012. He is a native of Salem, Ore., and married the former Jessica McGee in January 2013. They have two children, Blakely Drew and Presley.

• Cadyn Grenier was named the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2018, giving the Beavers three straight selections, following Logan Ice (2016) and Nick Madrigal (2017).

•Madrigal, Grenier and catcher Adley Rutschman were all named First-Team Pac-12 and earned All-American honors. Grenier was also named the Brooks Wallace Award recipient as the nation’s top shortstop.

• Jenkins, who oversees the team’s infield and catchers, saw three of the team’s infielders named Pac-12 First Team in 2017 - Nick Madrigal, KJ Harrison and Cadyn Grenier. Madrigal was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year and its Defensive Player of the Year. Madrigal is just the second player in the conference to earn both honors in the same year over the last two decades.

• Two Oregon State players under Jenkins’ tutelage - Logan Ice and Nick Madrigal - earned major Pac-12 Conference honors in 2016. Ice was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Madrigal was named the Freshman of the Year.

• Madrigal’s selection gave the Beavers two consecutive Freshman of the Year honors as he joined KJ Harrison, who won it in 2015.

• Ice was named a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award in 2016. The honor is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate catcher. Rutschman was named a semifinalist in 2018.

• Ice was charged with just one passed ball in 2016, and threw out nearly 45 percent of basestealers attempting against him.

• Oregon State’s catchers have thrown out at least 50 percent of opposing basestealers in four of Jenkins’ six seasons as an assistant coach. The Beavers are the only team in the Pac-12 Conference who have accomplished that feat.

• The Beavers have allowed only 127 stolen bases over that stretch, an average of less than 22 per season. They’ve thrown out 139 - an average of nearly 24 a season - for a 52.2 percentage.

• Oregon State’s fielding percentage has been at .972 or better in each of Jenkins’ six seasons. The 2014 Beavers finished with a school-record mark of .979, which was equaled by the 2018 team, which led the Pac-12 with 52 double plays.

• Since 2013, the Beavers have also turned 293 double plays, one of the top totals in the Pac-12.

• In the past four seasons, since 2014, OSU has committed just 24 passed balls. Ice, the team’s starter for three years during that stretch, was charged with only four.

• Ice, who was a second-round selection by Cleveland in the 2016 MLB Draft, ended his Oregon State career with a .996 fielding percentage and threw out 49-of-101 (48.5 percent) of opposing basestealers.
