2020 BEER AWARDSThe Beer Awards, reinvigorated in 2019 after a long hiatus, invites the top brewers from across Australia to compete for national recognition. Featuring a dedicated team of brewers, beer writers and industry figures, the competition offers a comprehensive snapshot of the quality of Australian brewing and a trustworthy guide for consumers.

The competition looks to further the Australian beer industry by providing educational bursaries for winners. A $5,000 education bursary is available for the 2020 Grand Champion Beer winner.

The 2020 competition also sees the return of the Desalinated Water Feature Category, thanks to its presenting partner The Queensland Water Industry Alliance, whereby a $10,000 education bursary is on offer for the 2020 Champion Beer Utilising Desalinated Water. All exhibits entered into this Feature Category of the 2020 Beer Awards will be eligible for the award.

In 2020, exhibitors will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Royal Queensland Beer Festival, a brand new public facing event to be held on Saturday 7 March 2020. This event will create an opportunity for exhibitors to share their recent achievements and showcase their

5 COMPETITION SCHEDULE AND ENTRY PROCESS

$10,000 DESALINATED WATER FEATURE CATEGORY BURSARYThanks to The Queensland Water Industry Alliance, presenting partner of the Desalinated Water Feature Category, up to 20 South East Queensland breweries will have the chance to claim a coveted $10,000 education bursary. The Feature Category, which was extremely popular in 2019, will go ahead again in 2020, pitting brewery against brewery to create a top tasting craft beer utilising desalinated water.

The funds can be used for travel, training and education, aimed at furthering the brewer’s knowledge and to further advance the Australian beer industry.

$5,000 GRAND CHAMPION BEER BURSARYThe RNA will be awarding a $5,000 educational bursary to the 2020 Beer Awards Grand Champion Beer of Show.

The winner of the fellowship will have the opportunity to develop their own educational experience.

The funds can be used for travel, training and education, aimed at furthering the winner’s own knowledge and advancing the Australian beer industry.

ROYAL QUEENSLAND BEER FESTIVALThe RNA is pleased to announce the introduction of a public-facing event celebrating the award-winning beers and their makers from the 2020 Beer Awards. The event, to be held on Saturday 7 March 2020, will aim to showcase exhibitors of this year’s competition, along with previous winners of the Awards. To be held in the Upper Exhibition Building, it will allow exhibitors to share their beers and stories directly with the wider Brisbane community. The event will consist of 2x 3.5 hour sessions with capacity of approximately 1,000 attendees each session.

With only 20 exhibitor spaces initially available, interested exhibitors are encouraged to enter the competition and submit an online application form for the event. Applications for the event close on Monday 11 November at 5.00pm.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDThe 2020 competition will also feature a new People’s Choice Award thanks to The Queensland Water Industry Alliance, presenting partner of the Desalinated Water Feature Category. Breweries will have their beers brewed with desalinated water judged on taste and not style by a panel of professional judges and by the general public. Judges will determine the finalists for this award and the general public at the Royal Queensland Beer Festival will then determine the winner. The beer deemed to be the most drinkable in 2020 may have future promotional opportunity become available throughout the year, with the RNA committed to purchasing a nominated amount of kegs of the winning beer to be showcased at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in August.

To be eligible for the People’s Choice Award (Drinkability), the following criteria will have to be met:

n Beers must be made with desalinated water;

n Breweries must have a stand at the Royal Queensland Beer Festival;

n The beer must be available for sale at the Royal Queensland Beer Festival (minimum 1x 50L keg); and

6 COMPETITION SCHEDULE AND ENTRY PROCESS

ENTRY ELIGIBILITYBREWERY ELIGIBILITY

AUSTRALIAN BREWERIES

Australian brewing companies that are producing beer for commercial sale are eligible to participate.

ELIGIBILITY COMPLIANCE

Breweries-in-planning and/or those not in commercial operation as of the 31st January 2020 are not eligible to participate.

BEER ENTRY ELIGIBILITY

A maximum of 600 entries will be accepted into the competition in 2020. If this threshold is reached, entries will close regardless of the entry close date.

A brewing company may enter unlimited beers into the competition.

No single beer may be entered in more than one style. Packaged and draught versions of the same beer must be entered into the same style.

Collaboration beers may only be entered by one party, which must be the party that has the greatest ownership (financial interest) of the beer. If financial interest is equally shared, the beer must be entered by the brewery where the beer was produced as long as they have equal ownership.

Many styles require additional information in order to assist the proper judging of entries. You will be prompted during the online entry process where additional information is required.

The additional information provided is subject to editing by the Competition Coordinator and the Chief Steward to ensure the additional information provided does not identify the beer being judged.

If a brewing company or beer entry does not meet the eligibility requirements above as of the 31st of January 2020 and has registered for the Beer Awards, the brewing company and/or beer entry is subject to disqualification without further notice and no refund of fees will be issued.

The RNA retains sole discretion to determine eligibility for competition at the Beer Awards.

DESALINATED WATER FEATURE CATEGORY ELIGIBILITY

This Feature Category is open to a maximum of 20 breweries located in South East Queensland. Places are limited and successful breweries are based on time of entry and geographical location.

Breweries can submit desalinated beers into both Feature Categories.

To be eligible to enter the Feature Category, a brewery must:

JUDGING PROCESSJUDGE SELECTION

Judges for the competition are selected from the Australian brewing industry and include brewers, sensory experts, suppliers, consultants and writers. Judges are selected on the basis of their sensory ability, industry and peer recognition, knowledge of beer styles and the brewing process, and their judging demeanour.

Judges perform several important roles in the Beer Awards. They determine winning beer entries that meet stringent award criteria. They are also expected to provide concise, accurate written feedback to entering breweries regarding their entries, describing positive attributes as well as defects noted during the competition.

JUDGING PROCESS

Each entry is judged at a table of judges consisting of not less than

four judges, plus an associate judge. The judge table is led by an experienced panel chair. The panel chair protects the integrity of the competition, facilitates table discussion and ensures the judging runs smoothly.

Judges very rarely evaluate more than 30 beers in any one three-hour session and never evaluate their own product in which they have a concern.

Judging is conducted blind, with no brand knowledge of any kind provided to judges.

Each beer is judged individually on sensory merits and adherence to the competition style guidelines available online at http://www.rqfws.com.au/beer-awards/

Judges individually fill out online judging forms for each beer during the first round only. Once all beers in the flight have been judged, each beer is discussed as a group and then determined to be gold, silver, bronze or no medal. Comments for each beer are entered and sent to the entering brewing company after the competition.

GOLD

An outstanding beer displaying the correct appearance, aroma, flavour and balance according to style with a high level of technical merit; a world-class example.

SILVER

An excellent beer maintaining close adherence of appearance, aroma, flavour, balance appropriate to style; an excellent example.

BRONZE

A very good beer that has minor deviations from style parameters and/or appearance, aroma, flavour, balance appropriate to style; a fine example.

10 COMPETITION SCHEDULE AND ENTRY PROCESS

DESALINATED WATER FEATURE CATEGORIESSUPPORTED BY THE QUEENSLAND WATER INDUSTRY ALLIANCE

Bacchus Brewing Co, winner of the 2019 Desalinated Water Feature Category, enjoyed an educational journey split into three legs. They first travelled to New Zealand for the Hapi Symposium and learnt invaluable new techniques for Hazy IPA’s. They then flew to Melbourne for Good Beer Week where the brewery team attended may workshops and learnt from their peers. The final leg of Bacchus’ education journey was a trip to the United Kingdom for Ross Kenrick where he visited some of the leading breweries for Alcohol-Free beer in the world. On winning the bursary, Ross said that “the Award has been invaluable to the brewery, especially in light of the fact that the information learnt is not available in textbooks.”

BEER UTILISING DESALINATED WATER

For the second year running, South East Queensland breweries will have the opportunity to create a beer using desalinated water. Successful breweries can enter their desalinated beers into the correct class as per normal and tick the box to indicate that the beer utilises desalinated water.

Beers entered into this Feature Category will be judged to style and judged alongside non-desalinated beers for a fair assessment.

Gold medal winning desalinated beers are eligible for all trophy awards.
