The Financial Aid Offices at City Colleges of Chicago work closely with students and families to provide financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, and work-study from federal and state resources. ACADEMIC AND STUDENT POLICY MANUALAll students at all times are subject to the current Academic and Student Policy Manual, unless a new board rule has superseded the text in the policy manual. It’s never too early to begin planning for transfer. City Colleges of Chicago Transfer Centers exist to help students plan for a seamless transition to four-year institutions. The Transfer Director at each college oversees an annual cycle of programs and services. At your Transfer Center you can:

• Find out about CCC’s partnerships with four-year institutions

• Identify four-year institutions that might be a good fit

• Match your graduation plan with your transfer goals

• Obtain college application fee waivers (pending eligibility)

• Receive scholarship assistance during the transfer process

TRANSFER EVENTS AT CITY COLLEGES

• Fall and Spring Transfer Fairs: Over 100 colleges and universities come to City Colleges annually to recruit students. Students are encouraged to attend these fairs to plan for transfer.

• College Recruitment Visits: When school is in session, colleges and universities recruit students by making “table visits,” Monday through Thursday at every City College.

• The Transfer-mation Conference: This District-wide event provides students with the opportunity to learn about career options, transferring with ease to colleges and universities and how personal goals can become a reality. Current students and alumni are invited to attend.

• Transfer Scholars: Eligible students can receive on-site admission, meet with selective enrollment admissions staff and get their financial aid packages up to one year prior to transferring.

• College Success: T hese classes include introductions to transferring for new students.

Partnerships between City Colleges of Chicago and four-year institutions provide a smooth transition for CCC students into the college or university of their choice. The CCC Transfer Pages are continually updated with new transfer resources.

TRANSFER PARTNERSHIPS WITH CITY COLLEGES

• Star Partnerships: CCC has partnered with colleges and universities across the state to provide continuing financial and transfer support for Star Scholarship recipients who participate in these partnerships.

• Admission Partnerships: Consider signing up for Dual Admission, Guaranteed Admission, and Dual Enrollment partnerships with local, outstanding universities.

• Pathway Partnerships: CCC has partnered with several universities in creating Pathway Partnerships. All students are put on a Pathway at CCC. Once you choose your destination college, using the Pathway Partnership document will show the classes preferred per major.

• Transfer Guides: Almost 50 colleges and universities have created Transfer Guides for CCC students to use when planning for transfer.

Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) City Colleges participates in Illinois Articulation Initiative, or IAI, a comprehensive state-wide effort among more than 100 colleges and universities in Illinois to facilitate the transfer of general education credits. Advisors will direct students to take IAI general education courses to fulfill the general education requirements whenever possible, since transfer is guaranteed by so many Illinois colleges.

• Students who complete the AA or AS degree at CCC or complete the CCC General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) Credential, and meet the admission requirements of an IAI-participating baccalaureate degree-granting institution to which they transfer, will have completed the lower-division general education requirements for an associate or baccalaureate degree in lieu of the receiving institution’s general education requirements.

• Students who complete courses with IAI status at the college where the course is taken have the assurance that the course will be accepted for transfer, often as a direct equivalency, at participating institutions.

MyCreditsTransfer Powered by Transferology MyCreditsTransfer is a statewide initiative designed to facilitate transfer within Illinois using the nationally available tool, Transferology. Within Transferology students can find out how courses transfer between institutions, how courses satisfy degree requirements and the different majors institutions offer. City College students can create an account in Transferology and with the touch of a button can import all of their CCC courses, allowing students to see how they will transfer to colleges by major. City College advisors and students use this system every day to plan for transfer.

Reverse Transfer of CreditIf you transfer to another college or university before completing your degree at City Colleges of Chicago, you can still earn an associate degree through the Reverse Transfer of Credit. Students who transfer to a four-year college or university can transfer back college credits to satisfy degree requirements at CCC.

Richard J. Daley College’s main campus and its satellite

campus Arturo Velasquez Institute serve Chicago’s Southwest

Side. The college prepares students to head directly into

careers and to transfer to four-year universities, offering

associate degrees, shorter-term certificate programs, free adult

education classes, and special interest courses. Daley College is the center of excellence in engineering and advanced

manufacturing. In 2019, it unveiled a state-of-the-art Manufacturing Technology and Engineering Center (MTEC), enabling

students to participate in a hands-on curriculum that prepares them for the technological advancements in the engineering

and manufacturing industries. With more than 75% percent of its student population identifying as Hispanic, the college

has earned the designation of an Hispanic Serving Institution.

Harold Washington College is located in the Chicago

Loop area and serves students from throughout the

city. The college is located in an area considered to

have the largest higher education footprint in Illinois

with several colleges and universities nearby. Many

students start at Harold Washington to jumpstart their college career and transfer on to complete a bachelor’s degree at

institutions across the nation. Harold Washington College is the center of excellence in business and professional

services. The college is also home to the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, and hosts an array of arts

programs, including a partnership with the Joffrey Ballet that provides students with the opportunity to earn an Associate

Degree in Art with a focus on dance. Starting in Fall 2019, the DePaul Harold Washington Academy, a first-of-its kind

partnership, will provide Star Scholar students with an affordable pathway to a bachelor’s degree. Harold Washington

College was recently recognized for institutional excellence and reaccredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Kennedy-King College embodies the commitment to academic

excellence and civic responsibility espoused by its namesakes, civil

and human rights activists Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr. KKC’s main campus is in Englewood on the south side of

Chicago and includes the Washburne Culinary & Hospitality

Institute; and the Dawson Technical Institute (the college’s satellite campus in Bronzeville). KKC serves is a

comprehensive community college, offering credit classes in a wide range of subjects, as well as continuing education

classes, and free high school equivalency and ESL courses. It is City Colleges’ center of excellence in culinary and

hospitality, as well as construction technology education, and works with industry experts to ensure students are prepared

for careers in those fields.

Culinary and hospitality courses are offered at Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute—where students receive hands-

on training at restaurants serving the public, including on-campus restaurant Sikia. Dawson Technical Institute offers

career opportunities in construction technology at companies, such as ComEd and Peoples Gas, and through major trade

unions representing workers in the field.

Olive-Harvey College is located on the southeast side of Chicago.

Situated on 67 acres, Olive-Harvey College is the largest physical

campus within the District. Olive-Harvey also includes the South

Chicago Learning Center (the college’s satellite campus). Associate

degree, certificate and short-term training programs are offered to

prepare students to transfer to bachelor’s degree programs or to move directly into the workforce. ESL courses help

students master the English language while adult education courses prepare students to earn their high school

equivalency. Non-credit classes range from short-term job training/career skills courses to personal development courses

in a wide variety of areas.

Olive-Harvey College is the center for excellence in transportation, distribution, and logistics, and opened a state-of-the art

Transferring College Credit into City CollegesA large population of students at City Colleges transfer from another college. Students must submit all college transcripts during the admission process so that the credit can be evaluated. This will help you get placed in the right course while at CCC and complete your degree more efficiently. Be sure to have your official transcript sent to the Registrar’s Office at City Colleges at the time of admission.

The General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) CredentialThese courses are offered at all seven City Colleges

You can complete the GECC Credential in order to satisfy most core requirements in any major you choose after you transfer. In order to complete the GECC Credential, you are required to take at least 12 to 13 courses (37 to 41 semester credits). If you complete the GECC Credential, more than 100 colleges or universities in Illinois have agreed to accept all of these credits from students transferring from City Colleges of Chicago. Students take classes in five general areas: communication; mathematics; physical and life sciences; humanities and fine arts; and social and behavioral sciences. Within each of these general areas, you will choose among many possible classes that qualify as GECC courses.

This set of general education courses is part of the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide transfer agreement among Illinois colleges and universities, including City Colleges of Chicago and numerous four-year institutions in Illinois.

ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degrees are occupational programs that are structured for students primarily interested in acquiring Career Technical Education (CTE) skills in order to enter the job market. However, a number of four-year institutions offer baccalaureate degrees designed to accommodate AAS degree graduates. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should meet with an advisor from the institution to which he/she plans to attend to discuss transferability of the AAS degree and individual courses.

Students seeking an AAS degree must select a program of study, (e.g., Child Development, Manufacturing Technology, Nursing) in order to determine the specific general education courses, the program core courses, and electives that are required to complete the program. An AAS degree is comprised of 50 to 75% of required technical core and specialty course work. Additionally, the AAS degree requires a minimum of 15 credit hours of general education. Students are required to take at least one course that fulfills the State of Illinois Human Diversity (HD) requirement for the Associate in Applied Science degree.

The Associate in Arts (AA) degree prepares an individual for transfer to a four-year college or university. Consistent with the IAI model and the ICCB Administrative Rules, City Colleges of Chicago requires that the degree is inclusive of a minimum of 37 semester hours of General Education.

For students who want to earn an associate degree before transferring to a four-year institution, the Associate in Arts degree (AA) is the traditional choice for most students. The AA degree indicates a student has mastered the basics of higher education. This degree plan provides you with the IAI General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) courses explained above, and in addition, you will select elective classes (25 credit hours).

Students are required to take at least one course that fulfills the State of Illinois Human Diversity (HD) requirement for the Associate in Arts degree.

The Associate in Science (AS) degree prepares an individual for transfer to a four-year college or university. For students who already know they are interested in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (the “STEM” fields), the Associate in Science degree, or even the Associate in Engineering Science (AES), is probably the one to pursue. This is also a transfer degree, and it is similar to the Associate in Arts. The main difference early-on concerns the selection of specific math and science courses, which will be different for students who want to major in a STEM field. Again, working closely with your advisor will ensure that you enroll in the right classes to achieve your goals.
