Dear Parishioners,
I am excited to announce that we have a new Communication
Director for the parish. Most of you know Jen Bussiere who has been
the office manager. She has accepted the position of
Communication Director with the responsibility of working on the
website, social media, live streaming, and the parish app. We have
invested a lot of time trying to stay connected to everyone in the
parish during the pandemic, and I believe it has paid off. I am
always touched by the very kind messages of gratitude from
parishioners for all that the staff has done to continue to minister to
you these last few months. It is clear that many of you appreciate
how committed they are to you and the Church.
I want to continue to promote our new parish app. Please go on to
the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and search for Prince of
Peace Parish. The app is free and it is designed to help you stay
connected to us with your smart phone. At your fingertips, you can
register for Masses, watch live streaming events, check the parish
calendar, read the bulletin and read parish news with just the tap of
your finger. After you have a chance to use it, feel free to tell us what
we can do to make even more information available to you from your
smart phone and our parish app.
We are now live streaming all morning long to help you begin your
day with praying with your parish. We have the rosary, Mass and
Morning Prayer from the Basilica from 6:30 to 8:00 AM and then the
Rosary, Mass and an hour of Adoration from Holy Trinity from 8:00
AM to 10:00 AM. Begin your day with praying with your parish live
online. The power of prayer is amazing especially when done in
numbers and in community. Also remember that the priests want to
pray night prayer with you each night at 9:00 PM live streamed on
the parish website, Facebook and YouTube.
Peace, Fr. Daniel

St. John Berchmans,
Religious (August 13)
John, the son of a
shoemaker, was born in
Belgium in 1599. He
entered the newly-opened
Jesuit College at Mechlin in 1615, and
soon joined their novitiate. Two years
later, he journeyed to Rome on foot to
continue his studies there. After three
years of studying Philosophy, his
superiors selected him to take part in a
public debate, but John became ill
before the debate had ended. On his
deathbed, he held his rosary, his
crucifix, and his book of rules, saying,
“These are my three treasures; with
these I shall gladly die.” He passed
away on August 13, 1621.
Patron of Altar Servers
St. Maximilian Kolbe,
Priest and
Martyr (August 14)
Born in 1894 in Poland,
Maximilian joined the
Franciscan Order. He
developed tuberculosis and recovered,
but remained frail all his life. Before his
ordination, Maximilian founded the
Immaculata Movement, which was
devoted to our Lady. After the Nazi
invasion, he was arrested and sent to
the concentration camp at Auschwitz. In
1941, a prisoner escaped; in
reprisal, ten men were chosen to die.
Maximilian offered to take the place of a
young husband. After enduring two
weeks of starvation and neglect, Father
Kolbe died. Francis Gajowniczec, the
man whose life was saved, was present
at Father Kolbe’s canonization in 1981.

St. Tarcisius, Martyr of
the Holy Eucharist (August
15)
During the persecution of
Valerian, many Christians
were thrown into prison to await trial
and execution. In the year
257, Tarcisius, an acolyte or perhaps a
deacon, was carrying the Blessed
Sacrament to them one day when he
was stopped by a group of pagans who
demanded to know what he was
carrying so carefully. He refused, and
they tried to force his arms away from
his heart; when this miraculously failed,
they beat and stoned him until he finally
died. His assailants then forced his
hands open, but could find no trace of
the Eucharist. Patron of First
Communicants

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ August 9, 2020
Dear Friends of St. Dom’s,
In just a few weeks, Saint Dominic Academy
will be back in our school buildings and
the elementary faculty and staff in our Pre-K
through 5 Lewiston campus is excited to
return. Although things will look a bit differ-
ent this year, our commitment to our four pillars, study,
prayer, community and service, remains the central to the
operations of our school. At St. Dom’s we focus on the
needs of each individual by encouraging them to take an
active role in their community and to face each challenge
with courage, conviction and a love for learning – traits
that serve our students well during their education and
throughout their lives.
The staff at the St. Dom’s have spent many hours
preparing for the return of our students this fall. With the
support and guidance of the Diocese of Portland, the
Maine Department of Education and the Maine CDC, we
have developed a plan for in person instruction that will
keep the integrity of our mission while providing for the
health and safety of our students and staff ensuring that
our children remain, safe, loved and educated.
We have learned to always be kind during this pandemic
and beyond, as each of us is stronger with the love and
support of others. Our entire staff loves working every day
at St. Dom’s, and we love and respect each of our
students and their families. They are truly a gift and
blessing from God. Our faith is enhanced by the way the
children treat their families and one another, and the
sacrifice to put one’s children in a Catholic School shows
the depth of one’s love and helps them to grow in their
faith lives. I continue to feel blessed and thankful for the
children of St. Dom’s, and it cannot go without saying how
lucky and thankful we are to have families and
parishioners who are so supportive of what we are doing.
It is through times such as this that I feel most blessed to
be a small part of the rich and deep history of Catholic
education in Lewiston, Maine.
I ask for God’s blessings for all of us,
Alanna Stevenson—Elementary School Principal

The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette minister to
people of every race, language, culture and way of life –
beginning at the La Salette Shrine in France where our
Blessed Mother appeared in 1846. Her final words,
“Well, my children, you will make this known to all my
people,” echo Jesus’ Gospel mandate. It is little wonder
that the La Salette Congregation has always been
mission orientated. When called upon by the Vatican to
preach the Gospel in foreign lands, they eagerly
responded. This spirit brought them to mission in 27
countries, especially among the poor in Angola, Argenti-
na, Bolivia, Brazil, Haiti, India, Madagascar, Myanmar,
Namibia, the Philippines, Tanzania and most recently,
Mozambique. With your cooperation, the Missionaries
of La Salette can continue to provide spiritual and
financial assistance to these mission countries as they
bring God’s reconciling message to the poor.
Thank you for your donation through WE SHARE or your

Pilgrimage for Restoration
Come to restore. The rest will come.
What is the Pilgrimage for Restoration?
In its third decade, the 25th annual pilgrimage is a spiritual journey of the faithful to the place where Ss. Isaac Jogues, René
Goupîl, Jean de la Lande and heroic convertnatives of New France were martyred now 378 years ago. It is conducted in
public honor of Christ Our King, for the restoration by grace of new Christendom, and in reparation for sins against the
Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Invoking the intercession of America’s saints and martyrs, pilgrims desire that Catholic Faith restore every dimension of our
lives: hearts, families, workplaces, parishes, neighborhoods, cities, dioceses, the American nations.

The pilgrimage is an exercise of penance and prayer, of contradiction and restoration, having both a personal & social
character. Modeled on the annual Pentecost Pilgrimage to NotreDame de Chartres, France, we embrace the traditional
doctrine & practice of Holy Church, with all its demands.

A special intention of the pilgrimage is the restoration of the Catholic family, civil society and the specifically Roman
liturgical & spiritual inheritance. We hope thereby to show our attachment to the Church’s tradition East & West and the
riches it contains: not with an intention of reverting to some bygone era, but rather of drawing benefits from the ancient
sources and putting them to work in the world today.
