Lately it seems as if I have a one track mind, the topic which keeps coming to
mind is aquatic invasive species. Wisconsin has a multitude of risks from the
Great Lakes to the Mississippi River but the ones that keep haunting me are
Curly Leaf Pondweed and Eurasian Watermilfoil. These two are the most
likely to invade Nelson Lake and could cause drastic changes that would im-
pact how everyone uses the lake.
Recently I looked at a map which showed which lakes in Sawyer County had one
or both of these. There are 13 lakes that have Eurasian Watermilfoil in Saw-
yer County and 6 that have Curley Leaf Pondweed. Many of these are popu-
lar lakes that are fished by local fisherman as well as tourists. In reviewing
the boat launch inspection reports of the 638 boats that were inspected at
Gerlach Landing, it was not uncommon to have boats that came directly from
one of these lakes. Fortunately, people have become much more aware of the
threat and are taking preventive action.
So what can we do? First, if we take our boats to another lake, make sure we
inspect our boats, trailers, and equipment, remove all attached plants and
animals, and drain all water from boats, vehicles and equipment before leav-
ing the other lake. Second, know how to identify Eurasian Watermilfoil and
Curley Leaf Pondweed. And third, when you are on the water be alert and if
you suspect you have found some report it to any of the NLA Board members.
Early identification and rapid response is critical.
The office of Vice President, Secretary and two Directors at Large will expire in
June and an election to fill these positions will be held at the annual meeting on
June 8 th. The Nominating Committee will recommend candidates for each po-
sition. If you are interested in running for one of the positions please contact a
member of the Nominating Committee:

NLA Invasives Program By: Bill Wilcox
Page 4 Nelson Lake Spring 2013 Newsletter
Prevention
The first priority of the NLA Invasives Program is to prevent any invasive from entering the lake. We
are doing this with signage that reminds boaters to clean, inspect, and drain.
The second line of defense is the boat launch inspections at Gerlach Landing. This is not the only land-
ing that boaters use but it is the only one that we can justify a paid inspector. The inspections not only
make sure the boats are ok but the people get a reminder that this is important. Not only did Donna
Ritter inspect 638 boats last summer but she gave the message to 1,620 people in the process.
Early Detection
Since it is not possible to inspect every boat that enters the lake, it is important we detect any introduc-
tion as early as possible. To do this we have divided the lake shore into 31 segments of approximately 1
mile each and have solicited members to check a section twice a year. All sections don’t always get
checked so we have asked some members to do a special inspection of the high risk areas, the boat
launch areas.

In addition to the actions above, we want every member to know how to identify Curly Leaf Pondweed
and Eurasian Watermilfoil, be alert while on the water, and report immediately if they suspect they have
found any.

Many of the roads around Nelson Lake are kept clean of trash by
members who want to keep our roads free of litter. If on, your
travels, you should happen to spot a can, bottle, or other litter,
please take the time to stop and pick it up. Thanks.

Nelson Lake Association….30 Years Old This Year By: Bill Wilcox
On August 16, 1983 Jeanne Nelson held an organizational meeting of the Nelson Lake
Property Owners Association at the Ranch Supper Club in Hayward “to ascertain if there is
interest in forming such an organization in the first place”. Listed benefits on the invite in-
cluded: town roads, shoreline, boating controls, fish management, zoning, pollution control,
and “last but not least, taxes”. 106 signed in at the door, about 40 couldn’t get in, and she re-
ceived an additional 29 letters of interest. 14 people volunteered to draw up a set of bylaws.
There was an organization named Nelson Lake Association, Inc. at the time but mem-
bership was limited to businesses and to be a full member you had to be a resort owner.
Somewhere along the way that organization changed its name to Nelson Lake Resort Owners
Association, Inc. and in 2001 the Nelson Lake Property Owners Association changed its name
to the Nelson Lake Association, Inc.
The steering committee met on August 24, 1983 to work on
proposed by-laws. Those present were Lloyd Nelson, Gene High-
ley, Graham Thoresen, Chancey Smith, Bob Eytcheson, Jeanne
Nelson, Hazel Hoff, Ron Redmond, Isla Hams, and Ralph Johan-
nessen. The first annual meeting was held on September 23, 1983
and called to order by “acting chairman” Ralph Johannessen who
then outlined a brief history and development of the organization
to date. He then proceeded to read the proposed by-laws and en-
tertained questions from the floor. With a few minor changes the
by-laws were accepted and election of officers followed and Ralph
Johannessen became the first President of the new Nelson Lake
Property Owners Association.
The by-laws stated: “The purpose
shall be to protect and preserve the envi-
ronment, of Nelson Lake, to maintain the
natural beauty of Nelson Lake, to keep
Nelson Lake clean and safe for all people
and to provide a forum for the collection
and exchange of ideas and to pursue any
other lawful objectives”. The purpose of
the organization has remained much the
same over the past 30 years with some ad-
ditions necessary to qualify for DNR
grants and qualify for IRS 501(c)(3) tax
exemptions.

Fish Sticks Phase 2 By: Rick Lindner
Page 8 Nelson Lake Spring 2013 Newsletter
The work on the Fish Sticks project went extremely well during the winter. With the preparations com-
pleted last fall we were able to proceed with tree placement on January 17th. Although we intended to
use about 2000 feet of shoreline, the coordinates on the permit limited the work to about 1500 feet along
the north side of North Bay.
The 50 ft hardwood trees were donated by Sawyer County and marked by the Sawyer County Forester.
The Wisconsin DNR provided resources to cut the trees. Trees were cut along the new trail and from the
county forest land adjacent to Jolly Fisherman Road. A backhoe from J-R Excavating was used to pull
trees out to the road. J-R Excavating also built the trail from Jolly Fisherman Road to the lake last fall.
With excellent participation by volunteers from the association we were able to hook and drag trees to
the ice as fast as they were cut. Two volunteers were positioned to attach cables to the trees and hook
them to the tow vehicles. About 6 volunteers used their pickups and SUVs to pull the trees down the
trail and out onto the ice. Two more volunteers were on the ice to unhook the trees.
May 2013 Page 9
Trees were placed in an “A” pattern on the shoreline by Gruel Landscaping using a bobcat. This pattern
provides anchor points on the shoreline and a stable structure to resist movement by wind and/or water
current. On April 8th volunteers completed the project by cabling the trees to the shoreline.
Due to prior planning and all the volunteer help the project was completed in two half-days. The first
half day completed all the cutting, dragging, and placement (it was estimated to take about two days
based on last year’s experience). The second half day completed all the cabling to anchor the trees to
the shoreline and tie them together. The total cost of the project was $1668.00, well below the original
estimate of $4026.00. The cost was shared by the Nelson Lake Association, Town of Lenroot, Nelson
Lake Resort Owners Association, Walleyes for Northwest Wisconsin, and the Northwest Area Builders
Association.
Thanks to all the participants in the phase 2 project this winter. Special thanks goes to John and Linda
Welter for providing lunch at Nelson Lake Landing for everyone working on the project on the day the
trees were cut and placed on the ice.

Since 2011, the DNR biologists have teamed up with Nelson Lake Association, Nelson Lake Resort
Owners Association and Walleyes for Northwest Wisconsin to aggressively stock “extended –growth”
walleye fingerlings that are 6-8” to avoid being eaten by largemouth bass. The 2013-2014 DNR mini-
mum length limit for walleye on Nelson Lake is 18 inches in hopes that increased numbers of larger
walleye will eat enough small bass and panfish to establish a desired state of balance. Below is the
chart of stocking from 2004 through 2012 with a DNR commitment to stock 12,515 extended growth
walleye’s in the fall of 2013.
