J 3, 2021

And We’re on Our Way . . .

With the start of our new liturgical year that began this Advent, the Church offers us a walk through

the Gospel According to Mark. Just about every Sunday from now till next Advent we’ll be hearing

readings from Mark’s biography of our Lord. (Since Mark’s is the shortest Gospel, we’ll also have

quite a few readings from John’s version later in the summer; but for the most part we’ll be hearing

from Mark.)

Mark’s seems to have been the first of the Gospels to be written, and it appears that Matthew and

Luke used it as the foundation for their own editions. Eusebius, an early Church historian, tells us

that Mark actually was Peter’s disciple and more or less his personal secretary. So Mark’s Gospel is

believed to have been put together from the stories about Jesus’s life and ministry that St. Peter

himself told as he toured Palestine and Rome evangelizing. As a result, the style is fairly choppy and

doesn’t seem to follow any fluid sequence of mission. Events happen abruptly, and just as

immediately end as things move right on to the next episode. For Mark, Jesus’s mission moves at a

breathless pace; His teaching and healing are hitandrun encounters, and He’s tirelessly on the

march toward Jerusalem.

This rapidfire montage of incidents, and Mark’s frequent use of the word immediately, creates a

sense of urgency to the mission. The time to act is now, not laterright at the outset of His public

appearance Jesus’s first announcement is “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand!”

The whole Gospel occurs at the decisive moment, when the believer is confronted with a constant

flashpoint.

This isn’t just because Mark’s is a roughhewn Gospel, slapped together piecemeal from various

accounts that the author “heard Peter tell. Mark was writing…” to a Church in crisis. His audience

was a community facing persecutionmost likely these were the Christians in Rome itself. Mark put

together his Gospel right around the time that the Emperor Nero had launched the first persecution

of Christians, and this hit the Church in the capitol city earliest and the hardest. Peter and Paul

already would have been in prison in Rome, awaiting martyrdom.

So Mark’s Gospel was aimed at steeling the nerves of those believers who were likely to be targeted

themselves at any moment. Their plight is the same that Jesus Himself faced: misunderstanding,

suspicioneven outright fearand, ultimately, execution as an enemy of the state. They are being

caught up into the very life of ChristHis saving mission is extended in their own persecution. To

share in His Resurrection and Glory means also that we share in His suffering; this is a key motif

that both Peter and Paul return to throughout their writings, and it’s demonstrated vividly in Mark’s

Gospel. Stand firm and bear courageous witness to the truth of Christianity now, he seems to be

saying, because there may not be another opportunity. The immediacy of the mission, the urgency

of Mark’s tone, all reinforce for his readers the dire importance of their fidelity and fortitude.

As we journey through Mark’s Gospel over these next ten months or so, as we follow the Lord’s

quickmarch to Calvary Hill that Mark presents to us, we should allow it to remind us of the reality of

the Christ event. No less than for his original readership, Mark urges us today to be ready to stand

firm for the truth of our faith in Christ, to have the bold integrity to bear witness to His saving grace

for humanity, and so to extend His mission into our own day. The time indeed is fulfilled, and the

Kingdom of God truly is at hand!

E estamos a caminho. . .

visitava a Palestina e Roma evangelizando.

o autor ouviu Pedro contar.

January 2021

Month of the Holy Name of Jesus

In the first part of January we continue to

rejoice and celebrate Christ's coming at

Bethlehem and in our hearts. We have the

wonderful feasts of Mary, Mother of God,

where we honor Mary's highest title, and

then we follow the Magi to the crib as they

bring their gifts of gold, frankincense and

myrrh on Epiphany. Finally we reach the

culmination of this season with the Baptism of Our Lord by

St. John the Baptist. With a touch of sadness we take down

our decorations and enter into the liturgical period known as

Ordinary Time where we will devote ourselves to the mystery

of Christ in its entirety.
