  • YEAR 7 STUDENTS OF THE WEEK Every Friday the students in Year 7 nominate a peer that they have noticed displaying our school values and being an all round good sort in the classroom. The two students with the most nominations are named the ‘Students of the Week’! Last week's 'Students of the Week' are William Bryant and Kayla Proudfoot. Awesome job guys!

Careers in Educational Psychology As part of a Digital Employer Connection series, the Ministry of Education hosted a Zoom information session this week with Psychologist, Megan Fitzpatrick. Alisha Roberts was one of two year 11 students who joined the Zoom hui. This is what Alisha has reported about her experience: “For a while now, I have been intrigued by the way the mind works. The why it does what it does and things that can influence it. I also think that I would enjoy teaching and being able to help children, therefore this seems\ed like a great opportunity to explore” What did I learn? “While on the call with Megan Fitzpatrick, because of questions from myself and others, I was able to find out what subjects would be useful to take in high school, making it easier to study psychology in University as well as what the job of an Educational Psychologies would be like. While every day is varied, her recent events had included working closely with the children and their families and writing out behavioural management plans for their schools to put in place. From this I found that this may not be exactly where I want to go, but this was extremely helpful, giving me options similar in Psychology that I may want to look into”.

THE COURIER Did you see this amazing feature on our Gateway students in last Thursday’s Courier!

  • What’s New in the Library?

HYPNOPOMPIA Edited by James Norcliffe & Glyn Starnge

The 19th in the brilliant Re-Draft series, Hypnopompia brings together New Zealand’s very best young writers from schools throughout New Zealand, in yet another dazzling collection. Wake up to the new world as seen by the most talented of our post-millennial writers. The 80 young writers featured in the collection have grown up with the century and Hypnopompia is their very woke report card on its perplexities, perils, passions, and never-ending variety. At times funny, at times dark, always engaging, their stories and poems are never less than perceptive and open-eyed. Hypnopompia is an impressive and entertaining message to every generation.

THE GIRL THE SEA GAVE BACK by Adrienne Young

For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse. For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell

are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again—a home.

FIVE FEET APART by Rachael Lippncott

Stella Grant likes to be in control - even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions. The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments, or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals. Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment. What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too?
