President’s Message Hello Everyone, Well our 39th annual convention is now behind us. Leslie and her team put on another great convention again this year. I would like to personally thank her and her team, the attendees, sponsors, vendors, and most of all, all the members that volunteered during the weekend. Planning has already started for the 40th convention and I would hope to see at least 2-3 members attending on average from each of the 28 clubs (soon to be 29). Folks, the convention is put on for our membership, in order to keep on holding the convention, we need our members to support us by registering. The auction was well attend and I thank you for that... Many NEC board members lead by example and support as many member club events as we can during the year, all we ask in return is please help us by supporting the NEC. Please get out there and support our sister clubs, you'll have a great time doing it, really! Linda Giza has been appointed chair of the nominating committee this year. Linda and her team will be canvasing for candidates for the board (officers and members-at-large). If you are interested, please contact Linda at [email protected]. If approached by Linda or one of her committee members, please give it serious consideration. If you have questions regarding the positions and duties, please contact Linda or me. It's a good experience and the environment is now more progressive due to the hard work of the current board. Just a reminder, any organized aquarium club or society can now apply for membership in the NEC. They should send an email to president@northeastcouncil for additional information. Also, NEC club dues are owed. Several reminders have been sent. Thank you to those who have paid. Question(s) should be directed to Joe Dinho. Clubs with outstanding dues have/will be contacted again. Clubs not paying their dues by March 1st are considered delinquent and “not in good standing” with the NEC. If clubs are having difficulties, please contact me directly... NEC meeting dates for 2014: General: 2Q – June 1 (CC) 3Q – Sep 14 (CC) 4Q - Dec 7 (CP) – Annual, Elections

Thanks to all our sponsors and donors, led by Amazonas Magazine’s Hospitality Room, FishMart’s donation of fish for our Sunday Auction, and Wet Pet’s sponsorship. NEC Photo Contest 2014 Photo Contest Chairman’s Note: Thank you to everyone who submitted photos to this year’s contest. I am very pleased with the number and quality of the entries. This was the first year that we took digital entries and it was a great success. This was also the first year that we had the judges critique the photos in front of an audience. I hope everyone takes the comments made as constructive and in the spirit that they were made. I hope to see everyone back again next year with even better photographs. I would like to give special thanks to our judges: Tony Terceira, Matt Pedersen and Ken McKeighen Jr. -Rich Pierce Newsletter Editor’s note: Due to space constraints the 1st place winning photos will be presented here. A more in-depth article written by the Photo Contest Chair, Richard Pierce will be posted on the NEC website along with all photo submissions. Judges’ comments along side each picture as well as excellent photo taking tips are included. Laura "Law" Mizii

Notice | Condolences Beloved wife of Joseph G. Mizii, Laura, was called home to her reward by our Almighty Father on Friday, March 28th, after a painful, long battle with cancer at the age of 47. She is survived by husband, Joseph, mother and father Mr. & Mrs. Albert Salemme, and brothers Anthony and Michael Salemme. Laura touched many lives during her shortened presence among us. Everyone who knew her loved her. Her beautiful smile, effervescent personality, and kind, loving and selflessly supportive heart will be sorely missed, but she will never be forgotten for the sheer presence she was. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church on Friday, April 11th, at 11 AM. In lieu of

flowers, donations may be made to the CaringBridge blog site for those suffering serious illnesses, at www.caringbridge.org. Published in the Orlando Sentinel on Apr. 6, 2014 at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/orlandosentinel/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=170513010 A consistent participatant in the yearly NEC Convention Logo Contest, Laura won the 35th with

a Caribbean theme (see logo on left). The logo was placed on an orange shirt. We join NJAS and send our heartfelt condolences.

There will be a Memorial Mass for Laura in

New Jersey on:

   TFCB’s 25th Anniversary Event!

The Tropical Fish Club of Burlington has learned the Holiday Inn hotel will sell out shortly and our block may or may not be extended. At best, rooms may be available at list price, not our $99 rate, so make your reservations now! You can always cancel if you are unable to attend. The Burlington Jazz Festival Week ends on the same weekend as our event so all hotels in the area most likely will be sold out. Call 802 863-6363 to make reservations at the Holiday Inn.

Shore Acres in North Hero VT (802 372-8722) offers a vacation atmosphere and is another option, but it costs more and it too may fill up as it is vacation time in the Islands… Please call Dave & Janine if you have any issues making a reservation and we’ll see what we can do to help you (802 372-8716). Thank you all for your support!

Saturday, April 26th 2014 at 1:00 PM a Joint Meeting with GWAPA

Planted Aquarium 102 - by Sean Murphy (GWAPA)

Sean has been keeping fish in water since he was old enough to have his mother say “Sean don’t get wet” every place they went. He started putting plants into tanks in earnest in 1985 when he was a sophomore at UMass getting a BS in Zoology, partially to encourage fish to breed, partially to conduct a predator/ prey/ cover relationship study for Limnology, Ecology, and Ichthyology, all three of which Sean was taking in the same semester. Sean earned his BS in 1986, and stuck around UMass to get his MS in 1991 in Fish and Wildlife Management, Sean's thesis concerned fish movement and use of high salt marshes in

Maine. The “claim to fame” from that study was that he has (had? Sean doesn’t know if anyone has a recent record further North) the northern most recorded capture of a spotfin butterfly fish in the US (see Bigelow and Schroeder's Fishes of the Gulf of Maine, Third Edition). Sean has been working for the federal government as a Fisheries/Wetlands/Wildlife Biologist for the last 23 years. Sean has been a member (at times) of the Pioneer Valley Aquarium Society, the Potomac Valley Aquarium Society, GWAPA, the Aquatic Gardeners Association (AGA) and a few other smaller clubs (killifish groups). He is also (or has been) a member of the American Fisheries Society, the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, the Estuarine Research Federation and a few others. Sean also has been a moderator on the Planted Tank forum, the AGA forum, and the Plant Geeks forum
