In general we have followed the story of Jesus’ life in Mark’s Gospel. This does not always provide the fullest account but is simple in structure. However it does mean that at times we need to add in some extra information from the other Gospels. This is one such section, though we shall not spend much time here as it is not necessarily about the life of Christ but about his teaching and that will be covered in other courses.Friday, 4 October 13

This includes:- 2 sections in Matthew, chapters 10 and 18- the main central section in Luke 9:51-18:34- the visits of Christ to Jerusalem and controversies therein in John 5-11

Matthew 10 & 18

Missionary Teaching9:36-10:42At some time during his Galilean ministry Jesus started to send out the disciples to replicate his work- they were to teach, preach and heal- the harvest was / is plentiful, workers few 9:35- teaching on what to do and how to deal with coming persecutionFriday, 4 October 13

11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you.14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.7 As you go, proclaim this message: “The kingdom of heaven has come near.”8 Heal those who are ill, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a]drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.9 ‘Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts –10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.

What Jesus taught about going- to the Jews initially (others later 28:18ff)- travel light- depend on peoples hospitality10:17-42 deals with the future- there will be hostility, it is inevitable- the HSp will enable them- be on guard but do not worry (17,19)- in all of this fear God not man- this will show the need for a response; follow Jesus or reject himFriday, 4 October 13

It will be worth it all in the end!‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.’

Luke’s central section9:51-18:14

This is also known as Luke’s travel narrative and is almost exclusively teaching material of Jesus.9:51 starts as if it is going to be a geo/chronological episode...As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.But little else is then mentioned - only 3 indicators

1. 9:52-56 Jesus is rejected in Samaria - does he go to another village or change route along the eastern side of the Jordan?2. 10:38-42 is with Mary & Martha in Bethany (Jn 11:1)3. 17:11 he is travelling the border between Galilee and Samaria

Much is made of the structure of this section:- is it simply a gathering of the teachings of Jesus as he approached the cross- do we need to read it all as being “in the shadow of the cross”?- is it an extended chiasmus with the pronouncement of 13:31-35 as the climactic centre?

11:20 - Martha rushes out (in her busy fashion, Mary stays at homeMary is portrayed as thinking more and understanding in greater depth who Jesus is (and what he can do)- Jesus cries 11:35 upon arrival and then gets angry 11:38 - the word translated “deeply moved” here is more often used for anger (is the anger also referring to unbelief of the people?)

This is arguably the greatest miracle Jesus performs - it is a climactic event that divides Johns gospel.- Jewish tradition said your soul hovered near your body for 3 days after death- Jesus emphasises God’s timing in leaving it 4 days- the result is that God will get the glory 11:4 - in effect this was not God’s design but he will use it- 11:1-16 set the scene - compare with Lk 10:38-42

- verifying 11:25, Jesus calls Lazarus out- the only miracle Jesus prays before - it is for the benefit of the people not for himself 11:41-42- Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin pronounce it is better for this man to die than live- 11:50 is interpreted by John as referring to the atonement whilst for Caiaphas it is to avert Roman disapproval- Jesus withdraws to Ephraim
