Additive Manufacturing of 3D Printing of Multi-material Composite Systems

Additive manufacturing, or three-dimensional (3D) printing, of composites is a grouping of different shaping processes that allows the fabrication of structures through robotic deposition of material by means of a computer model. This technology is a very promising avenue for the implementation of many mechanical and aerospace systems. My research team focuses on the development of advanced composite materials offering multiple functionalities (where multiple properties are desired for a given application) for additive manufacturing (e.g., FDM, SLA, solvant assisted, extrusion-based). My research team innovates with freeform, multi-material and multi-functional printing of complex mechanical/aerospace systems.

The intern will assist a senior graduate student (MS or PhD) with the realization of his or her research project. The main tasks are: design of composites, mixing of fillers, characterization of various material properties, tailoring of printing parameters, design of experiments, CAD design, robot programming, and 3D printing.

• Strong Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or Material Sciences background • Interest for applied research, 3D printing technologies, CAD, robot programming • Interest for material characterization (e.g., optical microscopy, SEM, mechanical) • Good team worker with good communication skills

Twisted String Actuation in the Design of an Artificial Finger

The aim of the project is to use a novel type of actuation in the design of artificial fingers, namely twisting string actuation (TSA) but in a novel implementation. Twisting string actuation is a type a mechanical transmission which is cheap, simple and efficient to transmit the torque from an electric motor to artificial limbs and is especially attractive for artificial fingers. Based on a previous design built in our lab and using a bench system we have developed to measure the performance of this technology of actuation we are looking to design and built a better demonstrator comprising one or two fingers, an electric actuator, and the TSA.

- Modelling and optim. of the TSA actuation system and the driven artificial finger - Fabrication of prototypes (3d printing and/or laser cutting) - Experimentations

- Familiarity with Matlab and at least one CAD software (Inventor or Catia preferred) - Minimal knowledge in robotics and mechatronics - Kinematics and statics of mechanisms - Fabrication

Self-healing Properties of Conducting Polymer Films

Self-healing materials possess the ability to repair a mechanical damage. We will explore the self-healing properties of conducting polymer films included between two metal electrodes. A voltage will be applied between the electrodes to permit a current flow in the films. The films will be successively cut with a sharp object. The damage will likely interrupt the current flow. If the material is self-healable, the current is expected to recover after a certain time. We will also investigate healing assisted by liquids or vapors. The healing mechanism will be studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy.

The student will perform microfabrication, synthesis of self healing conducting polymers, electrical and electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammeter, scanning ion conductance microscopy).

Catalytic Depolymerization of PMMA in an Extruder

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a kind of important thermoplastic material inmany fields. The solid stability of PMMA under common natural environmentprevents it from being depolymerized naturally. In order to achieve the disposal andsimultaneously recycling of waste PMMA, the high-efficient PMMA depolymerizationtechnology needs to be developed. A good idea is to integrate a catalyticdepolymerization reaction into an extruder to achieve the high-performance PMMAdepolymerization and the simultaneous disposal of recycling residues. The ultimategoal for this project is to achieve the recycling of end-of-life PMMA materials in anextruder and the production of value-added chemicals from waste PMMA.

1. Scale up the extrusion process;2. Optimize the operating conditions of PMMA depolymerization in an extruder: e.g.temperature, catalyst feed rate, residence time, recycling rate;

1. Research and Analysis 2. Critical Thinking 3. Collaboration 4. Communication skill

Photochemical Surface Engineering of Nanomaterials

Often, we need the surface of a material to serve a different function from what its native properties allow. In that case, we must engineer the surface to meet the needs of a given process. Photo-initiated chemical vapour deposition (PICVD) shows promise as a scalable process to facilitate surface engineering. Work at Polytechnique Montreal's PhotoSEL (photochemical surface engineering laboratory) has focused lately on adapting this method at near atmospheric pressure and under mild conditions to tailor the surface properties of metal surfaces, polymer substrates and nanoparticles of various types at both small and large scales. This internship would aim to modify powders, nanoparticles and nanostructured surfaces finding use in 3D printing, transportation and water harvesting.

Plan and execute experiments, analyze experimental results, construct/adapt reactors, write progress reports, present results orally.

Reactor engineering (a must), photochemistry (or a desire to learn), nanomaterials (or willingness to learn), chemical analysis (basics)

Effect of Climate Change on the Reclamation of Mine Sites

Mine wastes often contain sulfides which can generate acid mine drainage (AMD), characterized by low pH and high concentrations of sulfates and metals. Reclamation of reactive waste disposal sites are usually based on oxygen barrier covers which are very sensitive to in situ water balance. However, climate models predict an intensification of droughts during summer periods by 2100 in some mining regions of Canada. Longer and more intense drought periods could reduce the performance of reclamation. The objective of this project is therefore to assess the effect of climate change and propose solutions to improve the sustainability of reclaimed mine sites. This project is part of a large research program at the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME) UQAT-Polytechnique.

Characterization of hydrogeological, geotechnical and geochemical properties of different mine wastes. Physical model (medium scale) experiments in the laboratory. Initiation to numerical modelling. Support to Master's and PhD students. Collaboration with climatologists.

Basic knowledge in hydrogeology and/or geochemistry. Depending on the student’s background and interests, the internship may focus on laboratory experiments and/or numerical simulations. Therefore, some experience in the lab or with numerical models could be useful.

Integrated Mine Waste Management to Prevent Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)

One of the most critical issues for the mining industry remains the management and safe disposal of the important quantities of solid wastes (mine tailings and waste rock) produced during extraction. These materials often contain sulfides which can oxidize upon contact with oxygen (air) and water, producing acidic effluent with high concentrations of sulfates and heavy metals (known as acid mine drainage, AMD). Reclamation of reactive waste disposal sites is best achieved when it is planned in advance and integrated into the mining production cycle. Integrated mine waste management is therefore at the core of the research carried out at the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME) UQAT-Polytechnique.

Characterization of hydrogeological, geotechnical and geochemical properties of different mine wastes. Physical model (medium scale) experiments in the laboratory. Support to Master's and PhD students. Initiation to numerical modelling.

Basic knowledge in hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering and/or geochemistry. Depending on the student’s background and interests, the internship may focus on co-disposal of mine tailings and waste rocks in open pits, valorization of waste rocks in roads, dams and cover systems, and/or effects of climate change on mine sites.

Scale Effects on Hydrogeotechnical Properties of Coarse Waste Rock

Waste rock can contain particles which size ranges from clay size grains to meter wide boulders. The characterization of the hydrogeotechnical properties of such material is therefore very complex. Laboratory tests usually require sieving the material which can modify its properties. To better evaluate the properties of coarse grained materials in the field, new relations between mechanical properties and maximum grain size need to be established and validated. In this project, new and relatively unique geotechnical equipment recently acquired by the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME) UQAT-Polytechnique will be used. Large scale triaxial and shear tests will be carried out on various fractions of waste rock and compared to properties measured in the field.

Characterization of hydrogeological and geotechnical properties of coarse waste rock. Large scale triaxial (30 cm diameter) and shear box (30 cm diameter, 15 cm height) tests in the RIME-laboratory at Polytechnique. Possibly field work on mine sites. Engineering and Operations of a Data-Intensive Software System

Modern web applications like Facebook, Netflix or Tinder are "data-intensive", i.e., they train and use data mining models to, for example, predict the next Facebook page the user should click on. Each user has her own model, which needs to be updated on-the-fly as new activity of the user and her friends stream in. While algorithmically simple, the software engineering repercussions of updated models are far less clear. Which software architecture do data-aware applications require? What is the optimal deployment strategy to make a new model available to the end user as soon as it is built? How should one manage the operations of such a system?

The project basically consists of empirical studies on "real" data-intensive web installations. Our lab has significant expertise in such studies as well as the necessary tools and infrastructure. To get up to speed, the project will start with a survey of books and blog posts on data-intensive web applications and release strategies.

The student needs the motivation to quickly dive through source code, data and documentation to understand the major components and dependencies of a data-intensive system. The student should be familiar with typical scripting languages and should have the desire to learn R to statistically analyze and visualize data.

Control of a Multi-Robot Planetary Exploration System

The aim of this project is to develop the software infrastructure needed for one (or more) human(s) and a swarm of robots to collaborate in the exploration of hardly accessible planetary environments. For example, we envision that an astronaut shall be able to explore a lava tube on the moon aided by a swarm of small size robots controlled through an audio-visual interface. As the robots advance, they shall place themselves so that network connectivity is guaranteed. The overall goal is to increase the performance as well as the safety of the humans involved in the exploration.

The project requires the evaluation of progressively more refined robot controllers (including features such as connectivity, collision avoidance, etc.). These test phases will include both simulations and field-experiments. The intern will be tasked with setting-up and carrying the simulations/experiments, as well as data collection.

Required: C/C++, sh/bash, Python, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian), MATLABPreferred: experience with simple microcontroller kits (e.g. Arduino), ROS, GitDesired: experience with robotics simulators (ARGoS, Gazebo), experience with DJI/3DR drones, wheeled robots (kheperas, footbots),

Swarm Programming for Tiny Robots

Swarm robotics is a discipline that studies fully decentralized approaches for the coordination of large-scale teams of robots (swarms). Research in this field is ambitious: robot swarms are envisioned for scenarios for which solutions are today impractical, too dangerous, or non-existent. From drones to self-driving cars, robot swarms are becoming pervasive, and are used in many kinds of applications. Examples of swarm robotic applications are search and rescue operations, industrial and agricultural inspection, space exploration, and surgical activities.

The intern will learn to use the Buzz Virtual Machine developed in Dr. Beltrame laboratory and deploy it on small wheeled robots and indoor flying robots available in the laboratory. The resulting hardware and software combination will be tested with coordinated swarm behaviors.

Flexible real-time systems for closed-loop stimulation in neuroscientific research

When short sounds are presented at specific phases of ongoing brain activity during sleep, learning is enhanced (Ngo et al., Neuron, 2013). Subsequent work demonstrated that the phenomenon could be useful as a therapeutic intervention to improve sleep quality, increase learning, and as a research tool to investigate mechanisms of human memory. However, it is technically challenging to process electrophysiological signals and return auditory stimulation with high temporal precision. Existing systems that are able to do so are expensive and large, or are too inflexible for research use. This project involves developing an inexpensive, FPGA-based solution to support neuroscientific studies.

Working closely with real-time experts and with neuroscientists, the successful candidate will develop and test a closed-loop system that takes electrophysiological data as an input and plays sound files during specific phases of brain oscillations up to 20 Hz.

The candidate must have knowledge of real-time systems, signal processing, ability to build prototypes. He or she must be organized, and able to work in an interdisciplinary team.

Supporting Early-stage User-centered Design with Machine Learning Technologies

User-centered design is a widely adopted methodology to create interactive software systems. During its early stage, designers create and access a large number of design artifacts to ideate and communicate with users and other stakeholders. Two types of artifacts are frequently used: (1) sketches of rough design concepts and (2) examples representing analogical design ideas. With little tool support, however, designers are usually frustrated when managing the huge collection of design artifacts. This research project aims to resolve this issue by leveraging recent machine learning technologies to help interaction designers organize, reuse, and retrieve design knowledge from these artifacts.

- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of data about design artifacts - Develop machine learning techniques to identify design elements and their relationships in design artifacts - Empirically evaluate the techniques (potentially with user studies)

- Knowledge about machine learning, image processing, and/or user-centered interaction design - Programming skills (Python, JavaScript, HTML and CSS)

Automatic Detection of Convexity for Optimization

Modeling languages for optimization translate the mathematical description of objective functions and constraints to computational graphs for purposes of efficient evaluation and differentiation. The same computational graphs could be used to automatically detect convexity and other properties of the functions involved, and thus determine properties of the optimization problem. Knowledge of such properties about a problem can aid in modeling and in selecting an appropriate solver for the problem. In this project, we will work with the Julia programming language (julialang.org) and the JuMP modeling language for optimization (juliaopt.org).

Acquire a solid understanding of how JuMP stores the computational graphs associated to a problem and how they can be accessed and examined. Based on prior work using other modeling languages, implement automatic discovery rules, including convexity, linearity, quadraticity, etc.

Excellent programming skills and fluency in the Julia language are required. An understanding of computational graphs and optimization help but are not required.

Automatic Detection of Partially-Separable Structure

In practice, the objective and constraints of optimization problems are often partially separable, i.e., compositions of simpler functions that only depend on a small subset of variables. Exploiting such structure improves efficiency, both in gradient-based and derivative-free solvers. Modeling languages translate the description of objective functions and constraints to computational graphs for purposes of efficient evaluation and differentiation. The modeler does not typically specify the partially-separable structure. By walking the computational graph of a function, we may detect it automatically and transmit it to solvers. In this project, we will work with the Julia programming language (julialang.org) and the JuMP modeling language for optimization (juliaopt.org).

Acquire a solid understanding of how JuMP stores the computational graphs associated to a problem and how they can be accessed and examined. Based on prior work using other modeling languages, implement automatic detection of partially-separable structure in computational graphs.

Efficient Solution of Ill-Posed Optimization Problems

Certain optimization problems in economics have numerous redundant constraints, which causes typical solvers to run into numerical difficulties. The recent NCL solver, tailored to a specific tax problem, combines the AMPL modeling language and either the IPOPT or KNITRO solvers, works around such difficulties but is currently a serial code. The first part of this internship consists in arranging so NCL can exploit multi-core architectures and solve larger problems. The second part of this internship consists in implementing a robust general-purpose NCL that is not limited to the tax problem. The latter will be done using the Julia programming language (julialang.org) and the optimization infrastructure developed in my research group.

Acquire an understanding of the NCL algorithm and its relation to the classical augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Arrange for AMPL to instruct IPOPT and KNITRO to take advantage of multiple cores. Develop a Julia version of NCL based on IPOPT or KNITRO and benchmark it on large collections of problems.

Intermediate knowledge of constrained optimization and in particular the augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Basic knowledge of AMPL helps but is not necessary. Good knowledge of the Julia language is recommended. Solid computer proficiency (Linux or macOS) is required.

Infrastructure of the GALAHAD Library for Optimization

The recently open-sourced GALAHAD library for optimization (https://github.com/ralna/GALAHAD) contains a collection of solvers tailored to several problem structures. Implemented in Fortran 2008, the library does not currently interface well with languages such as C or interpreted languages such as Julia. The objective of the internship is to develop ISO_C_BINDINGS interfaces to one or several GALAHAD modules so as to make them interoperable with other languages. In particular, a Julia interface to GALAHAD is very desirable.

Acquire an understanding of the structure of the GALAHAD library and how to install it. Develop ISO_C_BINDINGS interfaces to one or several module and implement a Julia interface to those modules.

Design and Fabrication of a Legged Robot Prototype : Phase II

This project aims at designing a second generation of a legged robot we have developed. This leg has a very simple control scheme and rely on a mechanical system to react to collisions and produce a leg motion overcoming unexpected obstacles, see https://youtu.be/2zo5aSJEjhY. This approach is different from that of a fully actuated robotic leg and seeks to provide good traversability using a single actuator with constant input velocity. While encouraging results have been obtained for this single leg prototype, further experimentation with an improved design based on previous experiments and combining multiple legs is needed.

- Analytical modelling of the linkage - Numerical optimisation - Production of a CAD model and drawings - Fabrication of a prototype and experimentations

- Solid mechanics, Robotics and Mechatronics - Skilled with Matlab and 3D modeling experience (Inventor or Catia preferred) - Basic programming skills (Arduino) might be useful - Rapid prototyping familiarity (3D printing & laser cutting)

Optimisation, Fabrication and Test of an Adaptable Vice-grip

The aim of the project is to create a clamping device working with a principle similar to vice-grips but built from a single piece of material (no assembly required). This device will be shape adaptive, ie. it will mechanically adapt to the shape of the object to be grasped without relying on sensors. It will consist of a pair of fingers as well as a handle through which a user could control the device (think scissors). To minimize cost and complexity, this grasping tool will rely on flexural hinges and be lasercut from a single sheet of material (or 3D printed). That technique will also allow for a very compact design compatible with the targeted application, namely a surgical grasper. A schematic of the tool will be provided but its actual geometry needs to be established by optimization

- Modelling of the mechanism - Numerical Optimization - Fabrication of prototypes (3d printing and/or laser cutting) - Experimentations

- Familiarity with Matlab and at least one CAD software (Inventor or Catia preferred) - Solid mechanics, Mechanics of materials (experience with Ansys would be useful) - Kinematics and statics - Fabrication

Experimental Study of the Effective Thermal Conductivity of Granular Beds

Over the last decades, advanced composites have experienced a steady growth in several major industries such as aerospace, ground transportation and civil engineering. However, as composite parts are getting much larger and more complex, manufacturing costs rapidly become prohibitive. To open up new applications of high performance composites, it is necessary to reduce these costs. The proposed project is part of a larger research program investigating the potential of new adaptive tools with the capability of changing the shape of mold skins. The thermal conductivity of the new material used in this innovative tooling concept will be measured in the laboratory to validate a predictive software based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) developed at Polytechnique Montreal.

The following activities will be undertaken over a period of 4 months: 1) Literature review and laboratory training (1 month); 2) Effective thermal conductivity measurements and analysis (1.5 month); 3) Comparison of experimental results with numerical simulations (1 month); 4) Final report redaction (0.5 month).

1) Basic scientific training in Mechanical and/or Materials Engineering; 2) Experience in laboratory would be appreciated; 3) Basic knowledge in programming is an asset, but not mandatory; 4) Teamwork capability is expected; 5) Either English or French can be used during the internship.
