Welcome to our Electives Program – spring 2020 edition!
As usual, ISH offers a wide choice of after school activities. Most of them are for PYP, but some are
specifically targeted for MYP students as well. Among the very popular ones, such as Robotics, Ballet
and Drama, we have a few new proposals: Yoga, Fencing, Time travelers club… check them all out!
As you will infer from the list, some of the activities are running for the whole school year, but you have
now the possibility to sign up your children just for this semester. Please ask your facilitator about this
opportunity.

PYP ELECTIVES
TENNIS
Mini tennis classes with Coach Ed focus on improving children's hand eye coordination in a structured, fun and engaging style. Children will learn the basic shots and be given lots of encouragement to ensure they enjoy what we hope is the start of their tennis journey. There will be a demo lesson in September 2019 free of charge.
Day: Friday
Time/Ages/Location: 2-2:50pm for 5-6 year olds (6 students maximum) and 3:10-4pm for 7-8 year olds (8 students maximum)

FENCING
Situated just 5 minutes away from the School is the largest and one of the most successful fencing clubs in Denmark. Rooted in military tradition, Fencing Club Trekanten has evolved to become an important part of the international fencing community. Fencing is an exciting and fun sport that teaches students important mental skills, like strategy and patience, physical skills like coordination, balance and stamina. Fencing will also teach respect and discipline, as you are responsible for your own success in an individual sport. That being said, we do all this while keeping in mind, that it should be fun to engage in sports. The class being offered is Sabre fencing – the fastest and most exciting of the three weapons in modern fencing. The student will join the club as a regular member and will therefore have access to all our classes, facilities and other club activities such as camps and social events. We have our own facilities, with 10 permanent strips, strength & conditioning room, lounge area with TV, kitchen and a common work area with free WiFi. We offer a FREE tryout before committing to the class. Included in the membership is equipment rental the first three months.
Day and Time: Mondays at 4:00-5:30pm – students will have to go at the fencing club on their own; Pick up by parents at Trekanten fencing club.

VOLLEYBALL
Gentofte Volley and International School of Hellerup (ISH) have started a volleyball partnership this year (2019/2020): “The ISH-teams in Gentofte Volley”. Being one of the leading volleyball clubs in Denmark, Gentofte Volley has opened a volleyball group exclusively for students at ISH. The students sign up for the ISH-team in Gentofte Volley at ISH, and they will be members of the club (Gentofte Volley). Beginners as well as experienced players may join the ISH-team which would be headed and coached by instructors from Gentofte Volley.
Day & time: Mondays from 3 pm
Ages: 6-11 years old
Location: Gentoftehallen, Ved Stadion 14, 2820 Gentofte (students will be transported from school to training – pick up will be by parents at the sports venue).

PYP FOOTBALL CLUB
The content of the club will be football training, based on play with ball, exercise on different techniques, and playing a lot of games. We will be participating in different tournaments during the year.

STREET DANCE
Street Dance classes for Beginners comprise of commercial and urban street styles. This is an introduction to basic moves from Hip Hop dance styles connected with Gymnastics. Throughout the course, your child will explore several different styles of street dance and begin building creativity, balance, flexibility, coordination and patience. Dancers will not only practice exciting choreography but they will also learn to improvise with confidence. Street Dance classes incorporate other styles such as Hip Hop, Breakdance and House, and basic of Gymnastics.
Day: Thursdays – first lesson 12th September – new enrollments accepted from January

BALLET
This class aims to instill the joy of dance with the grace and discipline of Ballet. We will learn about the stories of the ballet and some of the dances as well. Class requirement: leotard (any colour), footed tights (pink), leather full sole ballet slippers (fitted with room for growth). Skirts are permitted. Hair must be out of face and if long enough in a ponytail or in a bun.

MONKEY KBH - DANCE & DRAMA WORKSHOP
We believe performing art education is complement in developing social skills, personal self-esteem, overcoming excessive shyness, finding “gusto” in a creative language/discipline and both dance and theater education are powerful instruments to create healthy relationships among peers. This year our final show will be titled HOME and will be performed in May 2020.
Day: Fridays from 14:30 to 16:00
Season: from September to December 2019 - ending with a little public demonstration; from January to May 2020 - ending with the final big performance.
Ages / Grades: PYP3-5 in PE room

LEARNING TO MOVE AND MOVING TO LEARN
Movement is the most widespread, important and even more serious activity children can practice. As they move and play, they learn "spontaneously" and train the intellectual, physical, social and emotional skills needed for a good development. Physical activity improves children’s motor skills, psychological well-being, social competence and emotional maturity. Learning to Move and Moving to Learn optimizes children's resources and boosts their development throughout appropriate activities and lots of fun!

- Travel the dangerous Silk Road as spicy merchants
- Meet the knights of Dark Ages

DRAWING COURSE
During this 8-week course, students will continue working on drawing lines, shapes, colors, forms and proportions to make shape collage. Shape collage will be practiced both by drawing and also cutting shapes and gluing them. Students will do several drawings to gain concentration skills on their technique and imagination. This course will benefit the students to become creative, learn about design and patternmaking as well as experimenting with different resources. The class is mainly taught using pencil and will add colors with crayons, colored pencils, markers and water colors. Material will be provided.

ART COURSE FOR PREK AND KINDERGARTEN
During this 8-week course, students will continue working on drawing lines and basic shapes to start creating stick figures. They will also be introduced to observational drawing where they will go outside, observe and draw a leaf/tree in the two seasons (Winter and Spring). This will support the students in learning how to record what they actually see to deepen their thinking & understanding and provoke questions. It will also contribute to advance their motor skills, visual learning, creativity and concentrating.
The class is mainly taught in pencil and will add colored pencils, crayons, markers and watercolors. Material will be provided.

MATHEMAGIC
Mathemagic is an interactive, stress-free approach to classroom Math. Students will work around application-based Math using Mental Math strategy, highlighting use of steps and more. The idea is to strengthen foundation while having fun.

BE A SPELLING BEE
(based on America’s Spelling Bee model)
Imagine what your child can do by learning more words and more about words (their origin, spelling rules, etc). Be a Spelling Bee, elective invites PYP children to expand their spelling foundation orally. It is a fun and exciting ways to boost your child’s confidence and command over their work. Materials for the elective will be provided.

ROBOTICS CLUB
This is the official Robotics Club of ISH… reloaded! Last semester the students had the opportunity to explore many interesting STEAM concepts. They practiced their creativity while designing and executing experiments with aim to engineer and program robots that solve real-life problems. The students explored building a fast car, an earthquake simulator, a rescue helicopter, a moon rover and a lot more and discovered many facts about natural phenomena!
This semester the course will continue with many engaging topics and themes from the world of nature, science and art. Our school will be in fact one of the first schools in the world to use the LEGO SPIKE Prime robot set that guarantees students’ engagement through playful learning activities. At the same time, we will continue using our LEGO WEDO kits for our beginners as well as our LEGO MINDSTORMS kits for the more advanced students. The course will also welcome new students who are completely new to robotics! Please feel free to sign up and join our Robotics club, a club where students build strong team-work skills as they work to complete fun challenges.The capacity of the club is 12 students and works on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a waiting list once it is full. Students are welcome to join the classes after the starting date, if there is capacity.

Get started with computer programming with Scratch, an easy to learn visual programming language for children. Learn the fundamentals of computer programming and game development while playing and making games! In this course we will make games inspired by arcade and home video games of the late twentieth century. No prior experience required.

Do you want to learn one of the most versatile programming languages available? Come join us at this introduction to Python where you will learn the basics of programming while you make fun projects! We will learn to perform calculations, create computer graphics, code interactive software and simple games.

MATH EXPRESS CLUB “ALGEBRA”
The second phase of the Maths express club this year is going to start by January 21, 2020. This time
the focus of the club is ‘algebra’. The sound of ‘algebra’ might seem difficult to some, but the participants
will be surprised how powerful tool algebra is to solve problems. In the second phase of the club, language
of algebra, constructing algebraic expressions and equations, how to solve problems by using equations
will be practiced which is foundation of calculus and beyond. Selected participants will meet once a week
on Tuesdays after school.
