HOOP DECEMBER 2019 2019/2020 COMMITTEE PRESIDENT: Boyd Jones : SECRETARY: Heather Taylor TREASURER: Paul Reynolds AC Club Captain: Cliff Stuart GC Club Captain: Leslie Wilkinson Committee members: Ray Puckett, Neil Constable, Clive Taylor, Dick Sayer, . From your President 2019 is almost “done and dusted” It has been a good season so far for our club. 78 members and club days for AC and GC have excellent turnouts with enjoyment (sometimes frustration) for all. You will see from the results section in this edition of The “HOOP ” that club players and teams have been successful in external competitions. Our own club tournaments too, were a great success, all with full entries. A big thank you to our club captains, Leslie Wilkinson and Cliff Stuart who organize club day play and keep competitions running smoothly. A tough job well done. Brian Reintjies organization and running of the Business house and Twilight competitions is welcomed by all players participating and by our club. Peter Wright’s green keeping skills in sometimes awful weather conditions have made the lawns a delight to play on …thanks Peter! Finally, a big thank you to all club members who have helped the club in any way especially our committee members, the housekeeping team and our HOOP editor. On a sadder note we recorded the recent deaths of Derek Pleasants and John Groves, both long standing club members. They are missed and remembered. On Sunday 8 th December there will be a club Christmas get together for club members and partners. I hope many of you can attend this pre Christmas celebration to discuss the “missed shots”, “the missed hoop”…..or anything else! My best wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year; have fun, drive carefully and play croquet well… Boyd Jones President.

    2019/2020 COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT: Boyd Jones : SECRETARY: Heather Taylor TREASURER: Paul Reynolds

AC Club Captain: Cliff Stuart GC Club Captain: Leslie Wilkinson

Committee members: Ray Puckett, Neil Constable, Clive Taylor, Dick Sayer, .

    From your President

2019 is almost “done and dusted” It has been a good season so far for our club. 78 members and club days for AC and

GC have excellent turnouts with enjoyment (sometimes frustration) for all. You will see from the results section in

this edition of The “HOOP ” that club players and teams have been successful in external competitions. Our own club

tournaments too, were a great success, all with full entries. A big thank you to our club captains, Leslie Wilkinson and

Cliff Stuart who organize club day play and keep competitions running smoothly. A tough job well done.

Brian Reintjies organization and running of the Business house and Twilight competitions is welcomed by all players

participating and by our club. Peter Wright’s green keeping skills in sometimes awful weather conditions have made

the lawns a delight to play on …thanks Peter! Finally, a big thank you to all club members who have helped the club

in any way especially our committee members, the housekeeping team and our HOOP editor.

On a sadder note we recorded the recent deaths of Derek Pleasants and John Groves, both long standing club

members. They are missed and remembered.

On Sunday 8th December there will be a club Christmas get together for club members and partners. I hope many of

you can attend this pre Christmas celebration to discuss the “missed shots”, “the missed hoop”…..or anything else!

My best wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year; have fun, drive carefully and play croquet well…

    Boyd Jones

    President.

  • IN MEMORY OF JOHN GROVES It is with sadness we acknowledge the passing of John Groves. John joined the Club in 2001 when we played at Lexham Park. John was instructed how to play the AC game. He listened, and then he did it his own way. . . . . . He was an enthusiastic member who went around each Saturday morning acknowledging every club member and shaking their hand. He will be sadly missed.

Suspicious activity at the club during a windy day in September. . . . . .

Editor Heather had just finished her cleaning duties on one of those wintry days at the end

of September and was packing the car with the bag of rubbish and washing – you know

    how it is.

Over the fence pops the most nimble of a low handicap foursome, runs into the Clubhouse

and then races back out to let the said foursome out of the locked gate! How fortunate the

    Editor had her camera with her. . . . . .

  • TAURANGA MIDWEEK SPRING TOURNAMENT

This tournament was played in Tauranga on Friday 27th

September and was attended by 7 Katikati players.

It was a 2 division competition playing 3 handicap games and 3 level games and with players from as far

    away as Hamilton and Whakatane.

Division 1 was won by Robert Wyatt and Lennart Eldholt who won 4 of the 6 games with Dave Roberts &

Jim Peck as well as Neil Constable & Cherie Baunton acquitting themselves well.

Division 2 was won by Nigel & Graham from the Mount with 5 wins and runners up on differential were

Faye & Helen also from the Mount. Clive & Heather won 4 and were 3rd

    on differential.

The weather was pretty good, the games went smoothly and the company great. Clive Taylor

KAIMAI CHALLENGE AT CLAUDELANDS CLUB EARLY OCTOBER.

Clive, Heather T, Neil, Heather M, Dave and Alan made the ultimate sacrifice and got up at daybreak to

drive to Hamilton to become the Wildkats against the Classy Crew. A very friendly, but still competitive

match ended with victory for the Wildkats who won 17 games to the Classy Crew’s 7. Heather Metcalfe

KAIAI CHALLENGE 22 NOVEMBER – KATIKATI

The Mounties (Mt Maunganui) hosted the Wildkats at Katikati which gave Clive,

Heather T, Neil, Heather M, Dave & Alan home advantage and resulted in a 17-7

win on a very hot day. . . . Picture shows Neil & Heather T contemplating their

    next move.

    DOUBLES TOURNAMENT – CLAUDELANDS

Clive Taylor and Lennart Eldholt played in Open division levels Doubles tournament at Claudelands where

very heavy rains and mowing challenges almost caused cancellation of the event. Despite very slow lawns it

was a great day with Vanessa & Pam (Hamilton Esst) winning, Rob & Gavid (Claudelands) 2nd

(groundsmen! So really advantaged, LOL), and Clive and Lennart coming 3rd

    . Clive Taylor

DOUBLES TOURNAMENT ROTORUA – LABOUR WEEKEND

Heather M entered this tournament because she always wanted to experience playing in the beautiful

environment at this Club. Sue Brodziak from Warkworth had the same aspirations, so they enjoyed a great

day of friendship and fun – and came third into the bargain! Heather Metcalfe

  • MT MAUNGANUI DOUBLES TOURNAMENT 28TH

    OCTOBER

Won by Dave Roberts and Brian Sissan with Alan & Cath Wilkes (Te Aroha) 2nd

    on differential from Clive

Taylor & Alan Dodwell who were then 3rd

. Dave also won the Raffle – what a great day with fantastic

weather and some really enjoyable croquet. Clive Taylor

    THE BLOKES TOURNAMENT

The Blokes Tournament followed on 1st November and the Open Division was won by Dave Roberts and

Jim Peck (who was by all accounts, in im pecc able! form). Neil constable teamed up with Geoff Young

(Mt Maunganui) (a 4 combined handicap) and came a very good 2nd

, beating the young Coulter Brothers (-7

combined handicap) and then narrowly lost to Dave & Jim (-6 combined handicap). Well done, Neil &

Geoff. It seems Neil needs to be playing more in the Open Divisions.

In the Intermediate Division, Graham Wilson & Bill (Whakatane) came 1st with Clive Taylor & Lennart

    Eldholt coming 2nd

    on differential. Clive Taylor

    WHAKATANE TOURNAMENT BRINGS GREAT RESULTS

    Sunday the 17th

November 2019 Neil Constable & Clive Taylor travelled to Whakatane to play in the

Nicholson Level Singles as part of their annual tournament. It was an early start but a great sunny day with a

little cool breeze. It was fantastic to see that Council had ‘pineappled’ the Palms on the boundary removing

the nut problems that the club was plagued with. This week the 2 Cryptomerias will be removed allowing

them to start improving Lawn 1.

We played 6 games in Division 1 with Clive Taylor coming 1st with 5 wins and Neil Constable 2

    nd with 4

wins tied with Angus Coulter (-2) who he beat in their match. Players were from New Plymouth, Gisbourne,

Katikati and the Mount. Divison 2 was won by Sybil with 6 wins and Marshall Hyland 2nd with 5 wins.

This week Lennart Eldholt dropped handicap to 5, Neil Constable to 3 and Clive Taylor to 2. Good week

    guys.

    BOP INTERCLUB HOTLY CONTESTS

Katikati played a hotly contested BOP Interclub match against Mount Maunganui at the Mount on a day

with a few drifting showers and cool breezes. Team 1 didn’t make the most of some crucial opportunities

to go down 7 matches to 9 but with many games going to the 13th

. Team 2 held their own to draw 8

matches all despite Dave Roberts giving away so many Handicap shots but again good fun and great

company where games were played in good spirits.

  • BOP SILVER BADGES

The Finals were held in Whakatane on 3rd

November in glorious sunshine with little wind.

Open Division was won by Make Crazeley (-3) with our Chris Dixon (2) 2nd

. Chris had a win against

Mike in the 1st round. They played 2 rounds as there were only 4 represented – and I might add despite

hogging an additional lawn were last off the lawns! Ha! Well, done Chris, you made up a lot of points –

    next stop h/c 1.

Clive Taylor played in the 3-5 Division and won 3 of 4, coming 2nd

on differential in a 3-way tie won by

Brian Sissan (yes – the same Cuzzie from the Mount!).

    Robert Wyatt came 2nd

in the 6-8 division losing to Andrea 9Tauranga) who won all her games. Nice

    going, Robert.

Barry Lahmert played in the +8 Division which was won by Ian. Barry won some, lost some. Lawns were

fast with a few interesting obstacles like nuts from the palms.

    Summerset tournament

KKCC has success in our local Summerset Tournament.

Open Doubles: 1st: Dave (KKCC) & Scott (Manurewa. 2nd: Neil and Clive (KKCC) Division 3: 2nd: Elaine & Alison (KKCC)

  • MISSING . . . . . . . .

Alison Noble has lost a blue and white plate used at one of the October tournaments. Her name is on

the bottom of the plate and she would appreciate it if you would check to make sure you haven’t

    taken it home by mistake.

    Club gains new sponsor

Many of you will be aware that Aongatete Cool Stores was a regular sponsor for the club and some of you are

wearing the club shirts with their logo on the sleeve that they sponsored. In the last year they were taken over by

Seeka Ltd who own the cool store and packing sheds next to the croquet lawns. We asked Seeka if they would be a

regular sponsor for the club and they have agreed to give us $500 this year towards lawn care and maintenance. The

donation will be a big help and we thank Seeka very much for helping us.

    An “old and reliable” sponsor

While we acknowledge new sponsors frequently we often forget the important role our traditional and most

important sponsors have in helping the club for many years. Accumulus Accounting, a chartered accountancy

business in Katikati is one of those sponsors. Accumulus have sponsored the business house competition for many

years, recognizing the success of this competition and the enjoyment players from the club and local businesses have

from playing in the summer evenings. In addition they have prepared our annual accounts for the AGM at no

additional cost to the club. We thank Accumulus and Alan Dodwell for their special support over many years and

hope that it will continue. Members could recognize our sponsors if they need, in their case, accounting services.
