WONDERS & WORRIES | 2019 YEAR IN REVIEW

RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIALDemonstrated significant improvements in key areas when families had access to Wonders & Worries’ services.

The Randomized Clinical Trial was completed in collaboration with The Steve Hicks School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin to evaluate the effectiveness of the Wonders & Worries’ six-week psychosocial curriculum. Sixty families participated and results showed significant improvements in eleven key areas. An article summarizing the data has been submitted for publication and is pending approval.

HELPLINE LAUNCHEDGive us a call.

We set up a helpline to ensure that anyone can have a quick conversation with Wonders & Worries’ expert child life staff on how to talk to children and teens about any adult illness.

It’s free and fast – no scheduling or commuting. Funded by St. David’s Foundation and the Burdine Johnson Foundation.

TEEN MOBILE APP DEVELOPEDCoping tools for the digital age.

We created a mobile app for teens who are experiencing life with a seriously ill parent. It provides different activities teens can do and share to help them cope with their situation.

Funded by St. David’s Foundation and the Burdine Johson Foundation.

FIRST VIRTUAL CEU CREATEDGet the tools you need.

Our online continuing education program will provide helpful information for clinical professionals who want to guide parents in how to talk to children and teens about illness. Clinicians will be able to gain CEU credit and learn valuable tools for navigating tough conversations.

Partially funded by ESC Region 13

VR TREATMENT CENTER TOURFunded by Texas Oncology, this Virtual Reality tour will highlight key components of a parent’s clinic visit for children to be able to see where their parents go when receiving treatment and gain education to address potential questions or concerns.

HOUSTON OFFICEWonders & Worries continues to expand into new communities, with the groundwork set for opening a new office location in Houston in 2020.

ACTIVITY BOOKS FOR PROFESSIONALSWonders & Worries is compiling our activity book including many of the activities used in their 6-week psychosocial support curriculum for use by professionals in other communities wanting to better serve children and teens impacted by a parent’s illness.

WONDERS & WORRIES TEEN CURRICULUMWonders & Worries is modifying our research validated six session Illness Education Curriculum to be more appealing to teens.

LATE STAGE CANCER STUDYA new curriculum was created specifically for families coping with late stage cancers. Research studying the effectiveness of this curriculum is being funded by the St. David’s Center for Health Promotion Research. Wonders & Worries is working with Dr. Elizabeth Kvale and Dr. Farya Phillips from Dell Medical School & Steve Hicks School of Social Work to conduct the study. (Research to be completed in February 2020).

BOOK SERIES FOR FAMILIESWonders & Worries is planning a book series to complement the array of books regarding illness currently on the market. Identified gaps in current literature include illnesses other than cancer, as well as books written with a dad as the character with the illness.

WONDERS & WORRIES REGISTERED CLINICIAN/INSTITUTION PROGRAMWonders & Worries is creating it’s own registration program to allow clinicians in other parts of the country access to education, guidance and support by our professional staff for implementing the Wonders & Worries curriculum in new communities.
