512 W. Grant Ave. Pueblo, CO 81004 Driving directions: From Lincoln Street, turn southeast on W. Grant Ave. Go approx. 1/2 mile and the destination will be on the right.

The front garden of this contemporary mid-century house shows how xeriscape principles can be applied to create a space that reflects one’s own style, while being water-wise. The terraced rock walls, flagstone steps and walkway were installed by the former owner, as were the trees and larger shrubs. The current gardener focuses more on the uniqueness and interesting characteristics of individual plants – the type of specimen planting done in many botanical gardens. She also brought plants down from her prior home in Denver, particularly iris and roses. The iris are dotted throughout the garden, establishing visual continuity, and the roses are clustered primarily at the top of the slope, where they can be viewed close up. Having cultivated an alpine garden at her former home, she chose a location above the cutleaf sumacs where the intricate and delicate features of alpine plants can be enjoyed. The rock walls are the perfect foil to the tiny blooms and foliage of these sun lovers. To the left and along the street, cactus plantings accented with sedum and succulents are the focus of another specialty garden. The gravel groundcover shows off the unique colors, needle patterns and shapes of these drought tolerant species. There is also a section of the yard the owner calls “The Final Frontier”. This part of a terrace is still covered with black plastic and gravel, and is no longer attractive. These areas will be the focus of her next planting efforts.

Pueblo Tour Locations Saturday, June 1, 2019 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

535 Dittmer Ave. Pueblo, CO 81005 Driving directions: From Lincoln Ave. turn northwest on W. Orman Ave. approx. 1/2 mile. Turn left onto Dittmer Ave. The location will be on the right in approx. 1/2 mile.

Driving past the historic Pueblo Revival style house, built in 1939 by Harold Florman, at 535 Dittmer in Aberdeen you can see some but certainly not nearly all the extensive gardens filled with Xeric plants, cactus and other kinds of plants that fill the expansive property. Walk around to the back to discover the “secret garden” setting sure to make you eager to tour the two-acre estate in the middle of Pueblo. Andrew Conrad and his family have spent the past 14 years filling every outdoor space with hundreds of plants including a large cactus garden in an area built of stone that is reminiscent of the depression-era WPA work at City Park. He describes the gardens a combination of xeric, English garden and native plants which continue to be a work in progress. He has his favorites like the water-wise ground cover that is everywhere and cactus that he carefully tends despite the obvious dangers of working around their sharp needles and spines. This stop on the tour is a must-see.

145 Melrose Ave. Pueblo, CO 81004 Driving Directions: From Lincoln Ave., turn northwest on W. Abriendo approx. 1/2 mile. Turn left on Cleveland Street. Turn right on Melrose Ave and the destination will be on the right.

The shady front yard of this home is designed to be as

waterwise as possible. When the home was

purchased 8 years ago, the yard had many challenges.

After listing it on the Historic Register as built in 1926, the homeowner has truly overcome a property filled

with dead grass, goat heads and stressed Elm trees. The first winter was spent planning the garden. Then

the yard was modified by using cardboard, newspapers and mulch to suppress weeds and form new weed-

free planting beds. This method is also called lasagna gardening. Once the new waterwise plants were

established the plants now receive only nature’s watering. The homeowner does not do any additional

watering in the front!! The back garden is an edible oasis with so much bounty that is shared with

neighbors and friends. The homeowner grows many waterwise herbs, fruit trees and unusual vegetables.

No space is wasted.

Pueblo West Tour Locations Sunday, June 2, 2019 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Paradise Memorial Garden 434 S Conquistador Ave. Pueblo West, CO 81007

Driving Directions: At US Hwy 50 and S. McCulloch

(traffic light), turn south onto S. McCulloch. Proceed 0.2 mile. Turn right at Spaulding. Proceed 1.7 miles to

Conquistador Avenue. The Ecumenical Church will be on the right. Please park in the NORTH parking lot (nearer to the garden) so churchgoers can use the south parking lot

closer to the church entrance.

The inspiration for this garden, begun in 2001, was to provide a pleasant, peaceful place to inscribe a boulder or plant a tree in memory of a loved one. In 2001 and 2002, the team (called the Gardenin’ Angels) focused on the infrastructure: paths, rock, mulch, and drip irrigation. It is now a beautiful public garden, open for the community to enjoy. A classic labyrinth, added later, offers a spot for a peaceful walk and meditation. Plants are chosen that require little or no water. Volunteers are welcome to come help create this beautiful place for others to enjoy. The garden is on the back side of the church, please use the east side of the parking lot.

1650 N Gill Dr. Pueblo West, CO 81007 Driving Directions: From US Hwy 50, head north on N. McCulloch Blvd for approx. 3 miles. Turn left onto E. Platteville Blvd. for approx. 3 miles. Turn left onto East Hastings Ave. for approx. 1/2 mile. Turn right onto N. Gill Dr. The destination will be on the right.

Our house is located in the higher Pinon-Juniper forest area overlooking Pueblo West. Having just retired we decided, "All about easy," was the way to go. We immediately went out and bought iron plants (no watering and they look great in winter!). Then we removed half of the landscape plants in our yard. By editing out the overgrowth we are left with a natural, easy care, relaxed yard that requires almost no water and minimal maintenance of weed pulling and trimming. Now, our landscape of Pinon, Juniper trees, rabbit brush, yuccas, cactus and small grasses harmonizes with our area, and we have time to enjoy its simplicity.

Demonstration Garden at Cattail Crossing Pueblo West, CO 81007

Driving Directions: At US Hwy 50 and S. McCulloch (traffic light), turn south onto South McCulloch Blvd. Proceed 0.8 mile to Joe Martinez Blvd. Turn right and continue to the Desert Hawk Golf Course parking lot. Cattail Crossing and the garden are on the right.

The Xeriscape Demonstration Garden at Cattail Crossing was installed and is maintained by the Pueblo West Community Xeriscape Gardeners. They meet to work in the garden each Friday morning, weather permitting, so this is a good time to come and ask questions about the plantings or to help them. The garden has several hydro-zones ranging from moderate to very low.

101 E. Abarr Dr. Pueblo West, CO 81007 Driving Directions: From US Hwy 50 W, head southwest on S. McCulloch Blvd for approx. 1/2 mile. Turn left onto E. Abarr Dr. The destination will be on the left.

When the homeowners bought their home eighteen years ago the property came with several juniper bushes, cholla cactus, one

large yucca, and a handful of trees situated on a rock yard. The trees and plant species were sparse and neglected. They added a split rail fence and xeric gardens with various cacti, yuccas and agaves. They also added decorative rock, driftwood and other rock work with raised walls and walkways. Rose bushes, lilacs

and cherry bushes, purple sage, different types of grasses and a variety of trees and bushes adorn this hand watered property. The yard remains a work in progress with continued additions and deletions. While it has been a lot of work, it has also been a labor of love which they enjoy sharing with

friends and family, as well as their neighbors: quail, cottontail rabbits, doves, lizards, snakes and various other critters.

After moving to Pueblo West in 2010 we began implementing our vision for a landscape fitting harmoniously into our xeric high desert environment. The hardscape consists of winding pathways which provide different areas of interest and new vistas at every turn. Throughout the garden, several bridges over meandering dry stream beds create visual appeal and various seating areas present excellent opportunities for bird watching, relaxing, and enjoying the garden. Ornamental grasses were planted throughout to complement the natural environment and soften the hardscape by providing movement, texture and year-round interest. Defined perennial beds were established for ease of maintenance, emerging as islands of color from spring through fall. Interspersed with trees, shrubs, nesting boxes, bird baths and feeders, this landscape has become an ideal environment for attracting a large variety of birds, including hummingbirds, as well as butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. Irrigation of the entire landscape is accomplished via a 7-zone automatic system consisting of drippers, bubblers and pulsators. Additionally, there is a shut-off valve to allow for manual watering with a garden hose. Our garden continues to evolve yearly and changes with each new season.
