04/30/2019 - 05/03/2019 (3-1/2 Days)Watercolor/MixLevel 2 & Up$550, WKSHP-00780

In this workshop, our very own “Cheap Joe” Miller will cover “everything” you need to know about watercolor painting and introduce you to some of his mixed media work using various materials, surfaces, and techniques. Joe will briefly review the basics like composition, value, and color, etc. There will be a demo each day using dif-ferent techniques like wet into wet, dry brush, texture, etc. Joe’s positive group critiques help you to see and improve your work in various ways. You will take home a head full of information that will serve you down the road on your journey of art. The only prerequisite is that you have painted several paintings in the last 6 months and that you have a desire to learn. This workshop begins on Tuesday. There is no Monday class.

Joe Miller, founder and owner of Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff began his professional career as a pharmacist and drug-store owner. In the mid-1980s, he decided to follow his long-standing fascination with watercolor painting and later began selling art supplies in the drugstore. Now, Cheap Joe’s is a world renowned mail order and inter-net art supply business, with three retail stores in North Carolina. Joe is an award winning artist and nationally known art instructor. In 2006, he received the presti-gious Dolphin Medal of the American Watercolor Society designated for persons making outstanding contribu-tions to watercolor and to art in general. He is a lifetime member of the Florida Watercolor Society, the Water-color Society of NC, and the High Country Watermedia Society. He is also proud to hold the title of HSG (high school graduate). Joe has had many solo shows and he is the author of four books. He has produced several in-structional DVDs and YouTube tutorials, as well as being featured in numerous magazines and newspapers.

Joyce Hicks Beautiful Watercolor Paintings From Easy-to-Paint Shapes

05/06/2019 - 05/10/2019Watercolor Level 3 $595, WKSHP-00782

During this workshop Joyce will teach you how to create a unique visual language from common symbols found in the landscape! You will begin painting a ref-erence journal of easy elements like a variety of fence types, country roads and paths, tree forms, clouds, win-dows, grasses, cottages, barns, flowers and more! Then you will use your new symbols to create paintings from your imagination! Emphasis will be on concepts, tech-niques and strategies for turning ordinary scenes into extraordinary ones with watercolor. Joyce will show you how easy it is to deconstruct complicated scenes with her simple methods for turning boring subjects into ex-citing works of art. Afternoons are devoted to one-on-one time with students. She brings her passion and love for teaching to inspire and motivate in a fun, fast-paced art workshop.

Joyce is an award winning, internationally recognized artist. She is a three time award winner and Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society. Her work is widely published and also appears in many of the popular Splash Series Watercolor Books. Her painting “Out Santa Rosa Creek Road” was chosen by Watercolor Artist Magazine for the cover of their April 2011 issue and also included a full length feature story about her work and travels. Her latest accomplishment is a Fine Art Book published by North Light Books called “Painting Beau-tiful Watercolor Landscapes.” She travels frequently in search of beautiful places to paint and enjoys conducting national and international watercolor workshops, giving gallery talks, demonstrations, and juroring watercolor exhibitions across the USA.

Dongfeng LiExploring Watercolor Portraiture On YUPO Paper

05/13/2019 - 05/17/2019WatercolorLevel 2 & Up$595, WKSHP-00784

In this workshop, students start by reviewing basic portrait construction techniques in traditional water-color, then focus on the structure of facial features through shaping. Next, students will explore how to adapt to watercolor painting techniques on Yupo paper. Students will learn how to set up layers of watercolor, including how to lay down fundamental colors and how to glaze and manipulate colors. Using their previous knowledge of watercolor, students will learn how to highlight the vibrancy and luminosity of colors through dynamic brush strokes, washes, and textures. Students will explore watercolor through innovative ways on Yupo paper: printing, spraying, and are encouraged to invent unique processes. Throughout the course, students will also learn how to handle the tools necessary to work on Yupo paper. Students need to have basic portrait con-struction knowledge in drawing and watercolor to take this workshop.

Dongfeng Li, AWS, with an MFA in painting & draw-ing and a Master of Art Education has conducted many painting workshops nationally and internationally in-cluding 5 international painting workshop trips to China. Li has received a considerable amount of awards and commendations which include: 2016 Missouri Interna-tional Annual Exhibition Best of Show Award; First Place Award of 2016 Georgia International Annual Exhibition; First Place Award at 2015 Illinois Watercolor Society Na-tional Annual Exhibition; Best of Show in 2011 Alaska Na-tional Annual competition; Three times First Place Award in Kentucky Watercolor Society Aqueous USA National Exhibition (2012, 2015 and 2016).

Sign up for the fun In this workshop and join David on a Watercolor Journey, learning the most valuable watercolor concepts and techniques. This workshop will save you countless hours of trial & error by demonstrat-ing approaches in an easily understood manner that will open new doors of discovery and creativity. Participants will be provided with reference photos, drawing guides, typed outlines, and step-by-step instruction through all stages of the painting process. David R. Smith began his artistic journey studying Chinese Brush Painting in the United States and China. A decade later, he was introduced to Western style wa-tercolor painting and was amazed at how enjoyable and forgiving it was compared to working on rice paper. Ever since, he has been hooked on watercolor painting, and has become a popular artist and instructor nationally, as well as a sought-after juror. David is an award win-ner and signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and his work has earned him numerous “Best of Show” awards, signature memberships, showings in galleries and museums across the United States, and inclusion in publications including SPLASH—The Best of Watercolor and the International Artist Magazine. With over 20 years of experience as a public school teacher, he is skilled at breaking down complex concepts and skills into easily learned chunks to help students find success. Antonio Masi A Modern Approach To Watercolor

06/03/2019 - 06/07/2019 Watercolor Level 2 & Up$525, WKSHP-00790

In this class, the focus will be on how to approach watercolor from a contemporary point of view, power-ful, emotional, and as an expressive medium. Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn unusual perspec-tives, attention to details, and create poetic, moody works. He will demonstrate every morning, explaining the materials (paints, paper, palette, brushes, etc), his set-up, and how he applies color. Although he is known as the “Bridgemaster”, he will demo landscapes, sea-scapes, etc. The aim is for each student to discover the unique qualities of watercolor and be inspired to find their own style.

Antonio Masi is President of the American Water-color Society and has had feature articles in The Artist’s Magazine, PBS’s “Sunday Arts”, and NBC-TV “Weekend Today in New York”. He was featured in August 2008’s “Bridgemaster”, and in June 2009 he had a solo exhi-bition for The New York Centennial Commission of the Queensboro Bridge. In 2010 Masi had a solo show at The Forbes Gallery in New York City, and The New York City Transit Museum in 2012, and he also had a show at The Salmagundi Club of New York. He was featured in The New York Times video in September 2014, titled: “Living City: A Tale of Two Bridges”. Fordham University Press published a book on his paintings, titled: “New York’s Golden Age of Bridges”, with essays by Joan Marans Dim.

Robin Poteet Draw Your Way To Better Paintings

06/17/2019 - 06/21/2019 Graphite/Watercolor Level 2 & Up$495, WKSHP-00794

This workshop gives equal time to drawing and paint-ing skills. Mornings will be filled with drawing demos, exercises, and experimentation; afternoons are all about watercolor techniques as you paint from your drawings. A confident drawing is your map to a great painting and it can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the creative process. You’ll create a new painting each day. Topics covered are: how much drawing detail do you actu-ally need?, giving up the ruler, perspective demystified, how to creatively trace a photo, exaggerating realistic subjects, drawing with your brush, painting outside the lines, watercolor techniques, and more. Subjects include architecture, animals, people and landscapes. This work-shop is designed to help students of all levels use draw-ing as a springboard for freedom and confidence, along with improving their watercolor skills.

Annie GlackenCreating Beautiful Handcrafted Watercolor Journals

07/22/2019 - 07/26/2019Mixed Media Level 2 & Up$495, WKSHP-00802

In this workshop you will design and create your own unique watercolor journals. There is something so satis-fying about sketching and painting in a journal you hand crafted yourself. This class is perfect for those who have never made a journal. You will begin by designing and painting the paper for the journal covers. Next, you will learn to hand tear your paper in order to have beautiful deckled edges on the pages. This will give your jour-nal much more character than a perfect machine made journal. After punching the holes in your pages, you will learn three different stitches and finish two hand sewn 8" x 10" journals and one 5" x 6" accordion journal. The journals will be open spine journals with beautiful deco-rative stitching embellishing the spine. The instructor will provide a very generous handout with step-by-step instructions.

Annie loves creating anything with watercolor: studio paintings, pen and ink sketches, and batiks. She holds active memberships in the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, High Country Watermedia Society, Cabarrus Art Guild, and the Mooresville Art Guild. Her award win-ning art has been exhibited in many North Carolina juried exhibitions, judged shows and galleries. Currently you can find Annie’s art at these North Carolina venues: The Billy Graham Library, The Billy Graham Training Center, and The Guild Gallery in Concord. In addition to exhibit-ing and selling her art, she enjoys teaching workshops in watercolor painting, sketchbook journaling, color mix-ing, watercolor batik, and book-binding. Annie’s desire is to produce art that would cause the viewer to reflect on the beautiful creation of the Master Artist—The Cre-ator!

In this multimedia art workshop, you will see and learn how to use color in a new and powerful way. From the first basic steps to the final painting, Julie will take you on a journey in which you will discover a painting method you’ve never seen before. Learn how to use red, yellow and blue to build 3-dimensional form, and use warm and cool colors for “temperature painting”. You’ll never see color the same way again! The easiest me-diums for learning this method are: Oil, Water-Soluble Oil, Acrylic and Pastel. The skills you learn here can also be applied to transparent mediums such as watercolor. The workshop will be based on her new book, “Fire and Light, A Method of Painting for Artists who Love Color”, in which Julie presents a comprehensive approach to painting using full color. It is recommended that you have this book during the workshop, although not man-datory.

*Please talk to Julie first for more information if you plan on using pastel in the workshop.

Born in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Julie Hanson lives in Sarasota, Florida with her family. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Ringling School of Art & Design. After an extensive study of the human figure during her apprenticeship with Leslie T. Posey (Who’s Who in American Art), her strong interest in color led her to the impressionist painters’ magnificent use of color. Julie is an award winning artist and a well-respected teacher who has taught many workshops locally and nationally. Although painting is her passion, she is accomplished in multiple other artistic fields as well. She is a member of the Florida Artists Group, Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society. Her commissioned portraits and paintings are in many private collections.

This workshop requires that you be at least an intermediate level watercolorist with adequate draw-ing skills. This workshop begins on Tuesday and ends at 1pm on Friday. There is no Monday class.

Having been introduced to the medium in college, Richard Stephens re-discovered transparent water-color in the early 90’s. He quickly garnered a reputa-tion nationwide for his confident, loose, impressionistic paintings. For the past 17 years Stephens has shared his passion for the medium by conducting painting work-shops around the country. The son of school teachers, Stephens’ comfortable personality and easy style is well adapted to the classroom.

2019 GLOBAL WORKSHOPPER

It is amazing how taking a workshop can help take your art to the next level. I have taken many and appreciate all that I have learned from them and the many friends I have made in each class. It is one of the best gifts I have ever given to myself and my art. I can name professional artists who regularly attend workshops. If you ask them why, you might be surprised at their answers. “It keeps me young” - “It’s entertaining while we learn” - “I wanted to jump start my art and it did.” I could go on and on. Each workshop listing that follows includes the sponsoring organization in red italics, the instructor’s name, date, class level, location, and contact information. Where the contact info remains the same, only the first entry has it listed. Enjoy! Joe
