What is the UNI Spectrum Project?
A Saturday program that combines music, movement, drama and art for children with differing abilities. Activities use the performer’s ideas with direction from UNI students.
Our performers come from the Cedar Valley and as far away as North Liberty. We range in age from 5 to 20 and meet each Saturday beginning in January.
Buddies in the Spectrum Project are students from UNI, Allen College and Hawkeye Community College who volunteer each weekend to work with our performers. Each performer is paired with a Spectrum Project Buddy for the duration of the project.
The Spectrum Project is a continuation of efforts to provide performing arts experience for children with differing abilities in the Cedar Valley. This effort began with Spectrum Theatre, founded by UNI Theatre Professor Gretta Berghammer in 2012. The Spectrum Project is modeled after the Ball State Prism Project, founded by Ryan and Amy Hourigan in 2009 at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
This project is supported through the UNI School of Music and community supporters.

Meet our guest…
Max Miller 17-year-old Max Miller, from Denver, Colorado is an artist and author on the autism spectrum. Max wrote his first book, Hello, My Name is Max and I Have Autism as a way of sharing what autism was like through his perspective. Non-verbal until the age of six, Max struggled with language and used art to express himself. By the age of 10, he learned how to read and write. At 12, he published his first book as he wanted to make a difference for other children, especially for those who could not speak. His intention is to help create compassion, awareness and understanding for children affected by autism.
Max wanted to take his advocacy further and created the Blue Ribbon Arts Initiative (blueribbonartsinitiative.weebly.com). A portion of his royalties benefit his foundation. Max said, "Art saved him," and he wants to share the gift of art with other children. He is doing so by providing low-income ASD children Art Start Kits to help them get started with their creations and by hosting an art show to celebrate the work of kids on the spectrum.
You can help support the Blue Ribbon Arts Initiative by visiting his store as each purchase helps the foundation. If interested in utilizing Max's book for fundraising purposes, please contact us for information. Max will be signing copies of his book in the lobby during intermission and after the show.
