Born and raised in Oakland, she immediately led new initiatives to offset the cost of living crisis, reduce crime, improve transit and infrastructure, and expand educational and career opportunities for the city’s most vulnerable residents.

MayorSchaafdevelopedOakland’s“17K/17KPlan”toprotect17,000low-incomehouseholdsfromdisplacementwhileproducing17,000newhousing units by 2024. She created the city’s firstDepartmentofTransportation,anurbandesign unit to connect safe streets with housing and transportation. She also championed MeasureKK,a$600-millioninfrastructureandaffordable housing bond, which Oakland voters passed with 82 percent approval.

MayorSchaafreceivednationalattentionforlaunching the Oakland Promise, an education initiative that will triple the number of college graduatesfromOaklandby2025.Todate,theprogram has sent 1,000 high school students to college with scholarships and will soon provide every baby born into poverty in Oakland with a $500collegesavingsaccount.

Mr.Normanhasworkedcollaborativelytodeveloporfinanceover2,000unitstotalingmorethan$400million.Heiscurrentlypartnering with Piedmont Housing Alliance in Charlottesville, VA to plan the development of a400-unitmixed-incomehousingcommunitywith onsite amenities and supportive services. AspartoftheStateofNewYorkEmpireStatePovertyReductionInitiative,Mr.Normanleda team gathering data and collaborating with families living in poverty to tackle systemic issues related to housing, employment, and wrap around services. Carol Ross Barney has been in the vanguard of civic space design since founding Ross BarneyArchitects in 1981. With a career that spans over40years,shehasmadesignificantcontributions to the built environment, the profession, and architectural education. As an architect,urbanist,mentor,andeducator,Ms.Ross Barney has relentlessly advocated that excellent design is a right, not a privilege. Her body of work occupies a unique place within the panorama of contemporary architecture, being exclusively composed of work in the public realm.

Ms.RossBarney’sprojectsvaryintypeandscale but uphold a deep commitment to the rolearchitectureplaysinlifequality.Thishasmanifest itself in spaces that transition urban dwellers from point A to point B and enrich the metropolitan experience; to buildings that are environmental stewards, showcasing sustainability in an overtly compelling way; to spaces that inspire young children and the brightest minds of tomorrow to learn, invent, and break boundaries.

Her work has been honored with over 100 major designawardsincludingtheAmericanInstituteofArchitectsThomasJeffersonAwardforPublicArchitecture,theAIAChicagoLifetimeAchievementAward,andtheandtheAIAIllinoisGoldMedal.Shewasnameda“Gamechanger”byMetropolismagazinein2018.

PriortojoiningTheKregeFoundation,Ms.Coletta was Vice President of Community and NationalInitiativesfortheJohnS.andJamesL.KnightFoundationwhereshemanagedaportfolioofmorethan$60millionannuallyingrantsandateamof18in26communitiestodrive success in cities. Sheledthetwo-yearstart-upofArtPlace,auniquepublic-privatecollaborationtoaccelerate creative placemaking in communities acrosstheU.S.andwaspresidentandCEOofCEOsforCitiesforsevenyears.

Previously,Ms.ColettaservedasExecutiveDirectoroftheMayors’InstituteonCityDesign,ranaMemphis-basedpublicaffairsconsultingfirm,Coletta&Company,andwashostandproducer of the nationally syndicated weekly public radio show Smart City. She continues producing conversations with urban leaders as a regularpodcast,“TalkingaboutCities.”

The Rudy Bruner AwardAmerican cities embody our nation’s greatest triumphs and most daunting challenges. At their best they showcase the rich diversity, cultural achievement, and democratic values that characterize the American spirit. At their worst theyreflectourcountry’smostpersistentsocialills – economic disparity, hopelessness, neglect andabandonment.Yettherearethoseplacesthatare developed with such vision and imagination that they transform urban problems into creative solutions. By recognizing these extraordinary places, the Rudy Bruner Award (RBA) seeks to promote fresh and innovative thinking about cities, and to encourage us all to demand excellence in our urban environments.

Excellenceexistsineverycity.Itcanbefoundin downtowns, neighborhoods, in small cities and largeones.ThepurposeoftheAwardistodiscover places that embody economic, and environmental factors.

Theseplacesoftentranscendtheboundariesbetween architecture, urban design, and planning.Theyarebornthroughprocessesoftransformation – the renewal of something old, or the creation of something new that resonates in thehistoryofcommunitylife.Theseextraordinaryplaces enrich the quality of the urban experience, and serve as models for placemaking in cities across the country.

Eligibility/Who May Apply• The project must be a real place, not just a plan or program. Programs alone will not be considered.

• Since site visits are integral to the award process, the project must have been in operationforasufficientamountoftime to demonstrate success.

•Theprojectmustbelocatedinthe contiguous 48 states.Itisnotfeasibleto conduct site visits at international locations or in Alaska or Hawaii.

•Therearenodistinctcategories.Projects may include any type of place which makes a positive contribution to the urban environment.

• Urbanenvironmentisbroadlydefinedto include incorporated cities, towns, or villages; a neighborhood within a city; an urban county; or anofficiallyrecognizedregionmadeupoftwo or more cities.

• Applications may be initiated by any person who has been involved in the planning, development or operation of a project.

•PreviousapplicantsandHonorableMention winnersmayre-apply.Previouswinnersarenot eligible. Please do not apply more than three times.

Establishedin1987,theRudy Bruner Award recognizesoneGoldMedalWinnerandfourSilverMedalwinnersineachbiennialcycle.TheRudy Bruner Award is distinguished from other award programsbyitsbroadeligibilitycriteria;themulti-disciplinary Selection Committee; and the detailed on-siteevaluationofeachfinalist.Eachawardcycleisdocumentedinabook,whichincludesin-depthcase studies of the winners and a distillation of the SelectionCommitteediscussion.Thepublicationsare available in paperback book format and digitally ontheRudyBrunerAwardwebsite.TheFoundationdoes not restrict the kinds of projects that may apply.Urbanexcellenceisadynamicandchangingconcept, and the Award is enriched by a diversity of applications. Rudy Bruner Award winners are not selected through an established set of criteria. Rather, the issues emerge from the Selection Committee discussion of the applications.
