Haring-Inspired Chalk Drawing

Materials Used• Tru-Ray Chalk Pad, 9x12” (P-6591)• Crayola Anti-Dust Chalk, White(B-1402)• Crayola Model Magic, Assorted Colors, 1 oz. per project• Pencil

Step 2Knead approximately 1 oz. of Model Magic until soft. Make a flattened ball for the head, a rectangle for the body and snake-like shapes for the arms and legs. Attach to the paper. Add small accents for the hands and feet.

Step 3Study the elements (semiotics) commonly used in artwork by Keith Haring. With white chalk, add elements that are similar in style to Haring’s work. Add action lines for your figure and elements.

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols, individually or grouped, that can give us more insight about the source and meaning of the artist. Haring used semiotics to portray words and themes in his artwork.

Step 1With a pencil, draw a stick figure in an action pose.

Tip: If your Model Magic starts to get hard, knead it for about a minute and it will soften. Soft Model Magic will stick easily to itself and paper.

Pop Art Tennis Shoes

Materials Used• Pacon Cardstock, 8-1/2 x 11”, White (P-101188)• Elmer’s Extra Strength Glue Stick(E-E527)• Colored Pencils, Markers and/or Crayons• Pencil or Pen• Scissors• Hole Punch• Yarn

Step 1Draw a shoe template, as shown, on an 8-1/2 x 11" sheet of card-stock. You can also download this template from our website, UnitedNow.com under Projects, look for Pop Art Tennis Shoe.

Step 2Design a pattern and color the shoe with your favorite colored pencils or markers - we used Mr. Sketch Scented Markers to make it a "smelly shoe"! Make sure you keep a bold dark outline.Cut out the pieces with scissors and fringe the tabs on the heel piece and toe insert. Use a hole punch for the eyelets.

Step 3Glue the heel piece to the sole of the shoe by applying glue stick to the tabs and to the sole of the shoe. Fold the tabs underneath and attach them to the sole, starting at the ball of the shoe and wrapping around

the heel to the other side. The tabs allow you to easily

round the heel.

Step 4Next, apply glue to the tabs on the toe insert and

on the inside of the toe side panel. Attach the top toe insert to the toe side panel to create the toe assembly.

Step 5Apply glue to the tabs

on the bottom of the toe assembly and to the front of

the shoe, then adhere both parts.

Step 6Fold the bottom

edge of the tongue underneath itself and glue

to the toe assembly.

Step 7Fold the eyelets in and "lace up" the shoe with yarn.

Be creative and make several designs! Watch our YouTube Video for ideas on decorating

shoes with WonderFoam, plus making a soft sculpture shoe with canvas.

Step 1Dirty Pour Method: Mix equal parts of Elmer’s Washable School Glue and acrylic paint in a plastic cup. Add water until the mixture has a pourable consistency, stirring well. Repeat this step with all the colors you want to use, in separate cups.Free Pour Method: Mix all the colors of paint and glitter glue you want to use in separate cups, as described in Steps 1 and 2. Once all of your colors are ready, pour a single color onto a piece of foam board or canvas, dripping or drizzling however you want. Repeat with a second and third color. Continue with Step 6.

Step 2For glitter effects, mix glitter glue and water in a plastic cup until the mixture has a pourable consistency. Repeat this step with all the glitter colors you want to use, in separate cups.

Step 3Slowly pour several colors into an empty plastic cup, one at a time. Do not stir.

Step 4Add any glitter colors last.

Step 5For best results, place an old baker’s cooling rack on top of a marbling tray or drip pan. Place a piece of foam board, canvas or other rigid surface on top of the cup, hold tightly and flip over quick-ly, setting the board on the rack. Wait a moment for the paint to settle to the bottom of the cup, then remove the cup. Excess paint will drip through the rack to the tray beneath, making cleanup easier.

Step 6Let the paint spread; you can also pick up your painting and tilt it in various directions so the paint covers the entire surface. Watch our YouTube video for optional tips, including adding silicone lubricant to create cells within the paint!

Basket Weaving Basics

Step 1Our example uses a 4" round basket base, which has nine holes. You may need to adjust the measurements listed in each step to make larger or smaller baskets.

Step 2With wire cutters, cut nine 15" pieces of #4 wood reed; these will be the vertical spokes of the basket. Soak the reed in water for 5 minutes. Do not over soak. (Scissors can be used to cut the reed; however, we recommend using wire cutters.)

Step 3Insert one spoke into each of the nine holes in the basket base; the spokes should extend approximately 3" below the base.

Step 4Weave the 3" sections together. Start by bending one spoke in front of the first spoke to its right, then behind the second spoke to its right. Continue this pattern with all the spokes; they should overlap and hold each other in place. Tuck the last spoke underneath the second spoke to its right. To complete the footer of the basket, trim any spokes that extend beyond the edge of the base.

Materials Used• Basket Base, 3”, 4” or 5” (C-6480,C-6481,C-6482) • HomeTools Wire Cutter (SUR-32148)• Round Reed #4 (1/8”) (ITC-RC4)• Bucket• Water

Step 5Cut a few more lengths of reed and soak. Tuck a soaked reed behind a spoke and weave in front of the next spoke, then behind the following spoke. Continue this pattern to build up the basket. When the first reed runs out, tuck in another reed and continue weaving.

Step 6Once you reach your desired height, re-soak just the exposed spokes. Weave the rim in the same fashion as the base, tucking the last spoke underneath the second spoke to its right. All the spokes should now be pointing "out" of the basket. Take one spoke back over the top of rim, inside the basket, and back out through a hole in the rim. Repeat this with all of the spokes; two spokes can come out of the same hole if necessary. Trim any excess to finish.

Cyanotype Printmaking

Materials Used• Jacquard Cyanotype Sensitizer Set (JP-JCY1100)• C-Line Clear Transparency Film (CLP-60837)• Digital Camera• Photo Editing Software• Printer• Bristol, Watercolor Paper or Fabric• Tray or Tub with water (for rinsing)• Measuring Cups • Paintbrush• Cardboard• Tape

Step 1Take a black and white photo or find one online. Open the photo in your favorite photo editing software.

Step 2Using photo editing software, invert the photo to create a photo-negative. Remember, if there are letters or numbers on the image, they will print backwards.

Step 3Print the inverted photos on transpar-ency film.

Cyanotype is an antique photographic process

distinctive for producing Prussian blue

monochromatic prints. It is the original

sun-printing process and one of the earliest

photographic techniques ever developed.

Cyanotype may be used to create detailed prints from

virtually any object that casts a shadow!

11Free Shipping Starting At $99!** | www.UnitedNow.com

Step 4In low light, mix equal parts Jacquard Cyanotype Part A and Part B, according to package instructions. Paint the solu-tion on your choice of fabric or paper according to the package directions. Allow to air dry in the dark; keep it cov-ered until ready to expose.

Step 5Tape the dry sheets of paper or fabric to a board, and tape the transparencies on top of the sheets. Take outside and expose to direct sunlight for 1 to 30 minutes. A longer exposure will pro-duce a darker print. After exposure, remove the transparencies and rinse the prints in a shallow tray of cool water for 5 minutes. The prints will continue to oxidize during the next 24 hours to their final, deep blue color. To instantly oxidize the print to its final color, submerge in a diluted bath of hydrogen peroxide after washing, then rinse and dry.

Step 6Watch our YouTube Video for tips on creating a transparency with a Sharpie, bleaching a cyanotype print, and toning a print with other mediums, such as coffee and tea!

Easy Paper Kite

Materials Used• Richeson Newsprint Pad, 12x18” (J-100211)• Round Reed, #5 (9/64”) (ITC-RC5)• Box Sealing Tape (3M-3710C)• Scissors• Pencil/Pen• Colored Tissue Paper• Ruler• Crayons, Colored Pencils or Markers• String•Glue Stick

Step 1Cut 6" off a 12x18" sheet of newsprint, so you have a 12x12" square. Rotate the square 45 degrees so you have a dia-mond shape. From the left corner, measure 5" up and make a mark. From the same corner, measure 2" down and make a mark. Draw a line between the two marks.

Repeat this on

the right side. Draw a

vertical line down the center of

the diamond. Measure 2" up from the bottom

corner and draw a horizon-tal line that bisects the center

line. Fold the side flaps and the bottom flap in. This is the back of your kite.

Step 2Flip the

paper over and create a design on

the front. Our example features a

checkered pattern.

Step 3Color your design with

crayons, colored pencils or markers.

13

www.UnitedNow.com

Step 4Reinforce the top edges with clear box sealing tape to keep the paper from tearing.

Step 5Cut a 14-1/2" piece of round reed for the center spine and tape in place along the vertical line on the back; tape only the top half for now. Trim the reed at the 2" horizontal line and fold the bottom flap up, then glue the flap on top of the spine. Cut a 22-1/2" piece of round reed for the top cross spar and soak it in warm water for 5 minutes so you can shape it easily. Shape the reed so that it traces the top edges of the kite, creating an arch in the center. Fold in the side flaps of the kite and glue, enclosing the reed on both sides; trim the ends if nec-essary. Tape the reed in place along the edges, and tape it to the center spine. Watch our YouTube Video for a visual demonstration of this pro-cess!

Step 6Cut a 13-1/2" piece of reed for the center cross spar and soak in water; shape so that it bows in the center. Insert the reed underneath the center spar and tape in place, keeping the bow shape. The kite will now be slightly rounded. Tape the bottom of the center spine for added strength.

Step 7Cut strips of tissue paper and glue them to the bottom of the kite to create a tail. Create a bridle by attaching a length of string to the front of the kite. With a needle, poke a hole from front to back and thread the string around the top cross spar and spine, then back through to the front. Tie a knot. Repeat the pro-cess about 2" from the bottom of the kite to complete the bridle. Tie the kite string to the bridle and fly your kite!

Step 1Print out our 7-piece King Tut mask template found on UnitedNow.com under Projects - look for King Tut Project #98. Cut out each outline and tape the pieces together (except the beard), lining up the outline to form the headpiece, which is called the nemes. Trace the ears and nemes template on a sheet of 12x18" Art 1st mixed media paper. Trace the beard pattern in the center of the sheet.

Step 2Paint every other strip of the nemes with metallic gold acrylic, keeping the pattern symmetrical on both sides. Continue the pattern on the beard, and paint the ears gold, too. When finished with gold, paint the remaining parts blue. Paint a 5" section of the center blue as well; this will be the center of the nemes at the top of the mask. Once the paint is dry, cut all the pieces. Cut the nemes in half. Outline each piece with a black Sharpie marker.

Step 3Glue the blue section to the forehead of the paperboard mask.

Step 4Glue the nemes pieces to the mask on either side of the blue center section, then trim off the excess blue at the top.

Step 5Roll the beard into a cone shape and attach with glue. Glue the ears in place.

Step 6Optional: Sculpt figurines with air-dry clay to add to the top of the nemes, if desired. Our example features a cobra and a vulture, which symbolize lower and upper Egypt.

Step 7Paint the face with gold acrylic. Add details with more paint and gemstones.

Step 1Using a white chenille stem, create a cir-cular loop that measures at least 1/4" smaller than the opening of the glass jar and twist to secure. Attach a second stem to the loop, shape into a half-circle, and attach to the other side of the loop. Continue to add stems in this manner, criss-crossing and wrapping around the stems to create a spherical, dome shape. As you add stems, the holes between them will get smaller; try to make them as small as you can. Allow the ends of the stems to poke into the center of the dome. Attach a final chenille stem to the top of the dome, and wrap the opposite end around a craft stick so that the dome can hang freely inside the jar. Make sure there is 1/4" of space on all sides, or you won’t be able to remove it from the jar after the crystals have formed.

Step 2Boil 4 cups of water and pour into the jar, leaving a little bit of room at the top. Measure 1 cup of borax. Add a little bit of the borax to the hot water and stir to dissolve. Continue adding a small amount of borax at a time, stir-ring as you go. Once the solution becomes supersaturated, the borax will stop dissolving and no more borax is needed.

Step 3To dye your crystal, choose a color of Handy Art Washable Liquid Watercolors. Add 3 tablespoons of liquid for lighter colors; 6 tablespoons for darker colors. The crystal will dry lighter than the color of the water. You can mix two or more colors together to create your own custom hues. Place the chenille stem dome into the solution, letting the craft stick balance on the jar opening.

Step 4DO NOT move the jar, as this will hinder crystal formation. Wait 12 to 24 hours before removing the dome. After removing the dome, cut off the hanging stem and allow to dry.

Step 5Using Marblex Self-Hardening Clay, create a 1/4" thick slab, roughly the same size as the dome, and attach it to the outside of the dome. Take a small rock and press it into the clay several times to create a realistic rock texture. Allow the clay to dry overnight.

Step 6As the clay dries, it will shrink slightly and may crack. Fill any unwanted cracks with a little more clay. Paint the clay with acrylics and let dry.

Experiment with the liquid watercolors to create crystals in an assortment of colors! You can also make white crystals by not adding any color to the solution in Step 3.

Step 1To complete this project, you will need 4 colors of 9x12" construction paper: sky blue (or light blue), green, red and white. Cut the green sheet in half to 4-1/2 x 12". Cut the red and white sheets in half to 9x6". You will use the entire 9x12" sheet of sky blue as the background.

Step 2Cut a 1x12" strip off the green sheet of construction paper. Using a ruler, draw a line about 1/4" in from the bottom edge of the 12" long side. With marker, color the area below the line brown. Above the line, draw green grass strips. Use scissors to fringe the grass strips, being careful not to cut past the line.

Step 3Using Roylco’s Child’s First Stencils set, trace the barn and silo on the red sheet of construction paper.

Step 4Flip the stencil over and trace the other side of the barn and part of the roof that is next to the silo.

Step 5Add details to the barn with markers. Our barn has a dark roof, doors, a window and wood grain. The silo also has curved sides and a roof.
