VIKINGS OPEN 2019 SEASON WITH FIRST-EVER SEC OPPONENT Portland State will have an unprecedented start to the 2019 football season when it plays Arkansas in Fayetteville this Saturday. The Viking program, now in its 73rd season, will be facing a member of the powerful Southeastern Conference for the first time ever, and could potentially play in front of the largest crowd in PSU history. The Vikings and Razorbacks meet in a 3 p.m. Central Time game, that will air at 1 p.m. in Portland. The game will be televised on the SEC Network. A live audio stream airs on www.GoViks.com with live stats at www.ViksLive.com. Both Portland State and Arkansas will be trying to set the tone for an improvement in 2019. The Vikings were 4-7 in 2018, 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference. That was actually a four-game improvement over a dismal 2017 season. The Razorbacks were 2-10 last year, 0-8 in the SEC West Division. That was a dip from a 4-8/2-6 season in 2017. PSU, an NCAA I FCS member of the Big Sky Conference, plays up against an FBS-level program for the first of two times this season. It will be the 43rd time in school history that Portland State has played an FBS team. The Vikings are 4-38 all-time, including 2-6 under Head Coach Bruce Barnum. The Vikings won Barnum’s first two meetings with FBS opponents, Washington State (24-17) and North Texas (66-7) in 2015. Since then, the Vikings have lost six in a row to FBS teams, the closest being a 35-32 decision at Oregon State in 2017. The Vikings are opening a 12-game schedule that includes six at home and six on the road. It is just the third 12-game regular season in school history (2013, 2014). With an extra Saturday before Thanks-giving this season, FCS programs have an extra week to schedule prior to the playoffs.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE VIKINGS Portland State opens its 24th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference. Head Coach Bruce Barnum (16-29) begins his fifth season at the helm and 10th overall with the Vikings. PSU returns 46 letterwinners and 15 redshirts from last season. Nine starters on offense, eight start-ers on defense and two special teams starters return. Featured is consensus All-American SR TE Charlie Taumoepeau. Despite spending some time injured in 2018, he totaled 28 catches for 580 yards and five TDs. His 45 catches in 2017 were the most by a Viking TE in 29 years. PSU also returns JR QB Davis Alexander (2,210 yards totals offense, 23 total TDs) and the entire receiving corps. On defense the Vikings will have a middle linebacker and whip linebacker in the starting unit, but return strong defense tackle and defensive backfield groups. The Vikings ranked eighth in scoring offense (27.5 points) and total offense (393.6 yards) among 13 teams in the Big Sky last year. PSU was 10th in scoring defense (36.2) and eighth in total defense (419.3). PSU was 4-7 overall, 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference (2-3 at home, 2-4 on the road).

ON THIS DATE This week’s game marks the second year in a row that Portland State will play on Aug. 31 and the Vikings are 1-1 all-time on the date. PSU defeated Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 31, 2002 and lost at Boise State on Aug. 31, 2018. This marks the eighth time ever that Portland State has played in the month of August. The Vikings are 3-4 all-time in August games.

SCOUTING THE RAZORBACKS Arkansas is led by second-year Head Coach Chad Morris. The Razorbacks were 2-10 last season, 0-8 in the SEC West Division. Arkansas beat its only FCS opponent last year, Eastern Illinois of the Ohio Valley Conference, 55-20. Arkansas averaged 21.7 points per game and allowed 34.8 per game last season. The Hogs totaled 335.7 yards of offense per game while allowing 413.2. Sixty letterwinners return for Arkansas, including six starters on offense, six on defense and two on special teams. The top offensive player returning is Rakeem Boyd. The junior running back rushed 123 times for 734 yards (6.0) and two touchdowns last season. Wide receiver Cheyenne O’Grady (30-400-6) also returns. Senior linebacker De’Jon Harris leads Arkansas’ defensive unit. Harris had 118 tackles last season, nine for loss, two sacks and five pass breakups.

VIKINGS VS. FBS COMPETITION Portland State is 4-38 all-time against programs at the FBS level dating back to 1968. The Vikings will play FBS members Arkansas (SEC) and Boise State (Mountain West Conference) this season. Athletically, Portland State has competed at virtually every level of competition, except the FBS. PSU began as Vanport Extension Center - a two-year school - in 1946-47, but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) from 1950 to 1964. Portland State became a four-year institution in 1955 and competed at the NAIA level. PSU joined the NCAA in 1965 and competed at the College Division level (the fore-runner of NCAA II). PSU was an NCAA 1-AA member from 1978-80, then moved back to Division II in 1981, where it competed through the 1995 season. In 1996, Portland State moved to the Big Sky Conference and up to the NCAA 1-AA (now FCS) level. Below is a listing of all PSU games against members of the NCAA I FBS level of competition.

• PSU’s best record ever at the FCS level was 9-3 in 2015 (4-2 at home, 5-1 on the road).

CAPTAINS NAMED Portland State has named for captains for the 2019 season. They are SR TE Charlie Taumoepeau, SR DT Kenton Bartlett, JR QB Davis Alexander and SO S Anthony Adams. This is Taumoepeau’s second season as a captain and will be his third as a Viking starter. Bartlett also begins his third season as a starter on the defensive line. Alexander is slated to be a starter at quarterback for the second season in a row. Adams, just a sophomore, is one of the top returners on the defense and will start again at safety.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN• The Vikings return nine starters and 25 letterwinners on offense. They return eight starters and 19

letterwinners on defense. Two starters return on special teams. In all, 46 letterwinners and 15 redshirts return for 2019.

• The Viking roster consists of 19 seniors, 27 juniors, 20 sophomores and 33 freshmen (including 10 redshirt freshmen).

2019 SEASON NOTES

CHUCK IN CHARGE: PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN, PAYTON CANDIDATE If the reviews and previews are accurate, Portland State tight end Charlie Taumoepeau should be headed for a big senior season. Taumoepeau as he has been named a pre-season first team Division I FCS All-American by Stats Inc, Hero Sports, Athlon and Phil Steele. In addition, he has been named to the 25-player Walter Payton Award Watch List. The Walter Payton Award goes annually to the top offensive player in the nation at the FCS level (effectively the FCS version of the Heisman Trophy). The 6-3, 245-pound senior from Federal Way, WA has been the Vikings top offensive threat the past two years. Taumoepeau had 45 receptions for 673 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore. It was the most receptions by a Viking tight end in 29 seasons. Last year, Taumoepeau started the season on fire, making eight receptions for 255 yards and four touchdowns in back-to-back weeks against Nevada and Oregon. Taumoepeau was leading the nation in yards per catch (36.2) and touchdowns (5) after three weeks, but he later missed time with a mid-season ankle injury. Taumoepeau still finished with 28 catches for 580 yards and five scores, ranking sixth in the nation in yards per catch (20.7), first among tight ends. He was named a consensus second team All-American despite being limited due to injury. For his career, Taumoepeau has 81 receptions for 1,402 yards and nine touchdowns. He is within reach of PSU’s all-time top 10 for receptions and receiving yards going into his senior season. Taumoepeau is a two-time All-Big Sky Conference selection. Other Big Sky Conference Players on the Payton Award Watch List include Troy Andersen (MSU), Eric Barriere (EWU), Case Cookus (NAU), and Jake Maier (UCD).

TAUMOEPEAU, BARTLETT NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG SKY Portland State seniors Charlie Taumoepeau and Kenton Bartlett were selected to the Big Sky Presea-son All-Conference team in voting by league media in July. Taumoepeau, an All-American tight end, and Bartlett, an all-conference defensive tackle, will lead the Vikings into the 2019 season. Bartlett and Taumoeapeau were among 29 players in the Big Sky Conference selected to the presea-son All-Conference team. Taumoeopeau is a two-time All-Big Sky performer at tight end. He was a consensus second team All-American pick in 2018, and has made preseason All-America lists in 2019. Taumoepeau, a 6-3, 245-pounder from Federal Way, WA, has 73 receptions, 1,253 yards and eight touchdowns in his last 20 games played. Bartlett earned third team All-Big Sky Conference and Academic All-Big Sky honors in 2018. A fixture in the middle of the line, he has started 21 of 22 games the last two seasons. Bartlett, a 6-3, 270-pounder from Boise, ID, has 66 tackles and six tackles for loss over that span.

PHIL STEELE LIKES THE VIKS Viking tight end Charlie Taumoepeau notched another preseason honor when he was named Pre-season 1st team All-American by Phil Steele Publications. Taumoepeau was also named preseason Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year. He was on the All-Big Sky first team list. Earning second team All-Big Sky Conference were JR OL Korbin Sorensen, SR DT Kenton Bartlett and SR LB Romeo Gunt. On the third team list were JR DT Semise Kofe, SO K Cody Williams and SR LS Riley Shackelford.

A FULL-TIME MOVE TO HILLSBORO Portland State Football moves to Hillsboro Stadium in 2019 as its full-time home venue. The Vikings join the Viking softball and soccer programs, which already use the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in Hillsboro, as a full-time home. The move to Hillsboro for football was made due to increasing challenges for home scheduling at Providence Park. Portland State had used Providence Park as its home venue since the 1960s. However, conflicts with Portland Timbers soccer in recent seasons had forced the Vikings to occasionally have to move out of the stadium for home games. In 2018, PSU played four of five home games at Hillsboro due to schedule conflicts. The logistics and cost of moving back and forth between venues, and occasionally not knowing if Providence Park would be available (due to potential MLS post-season games), helped necessitate the move. Having Hillsboro as a consistent home should be more beneficial to the program, fans and staff, as well as be financially more prudent. Portland State has played 17 games all-time at the surburban stadium. PSU played the entire 2000 and 2010 seasons at Hillsboro due to construction at Providence Park. In 2018, the Vikings played four of five home games at Hillsboro, and has had some one-off games in recent years.

HEAD COACH BRUCE BARNUM

Bruce Barnum is in his fifth season as Portland State Head Football Coach and his 10th year overall with the program in 2019. Barnum has the distinc-tion of earning FCS National Coach of the Year and Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year in 2015 after leading PSU to its best season ever at

the Division I level (9-3). The season included wins over FBS Washington State and North Texas, and five nation-ally-ranked FCS teams. The Vikings had their best season in Division I history (9-2) before losing to Northern Iowa 29-17 in the FCS Playoffs. In his time as Head Coach, Barnum has molded the team in his image; tough, blue-collar and fundamental-ly-sound, instituting #BarnyBall. Barnum spent his first five seasons at PSU as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. In his five seasons as of-fensive coordinator, the Vikings had tremendous success. In 2013, PSU set school-records for total offense (6,486 yards), offense per game (540.5), rushing offense (3,330 yards), rushing offense per game (277.5) and rushing touchdowns (36) while maintaining balance in the attack with 263.0 yards per game in the air, leading the nation in yards per completion (16.7). Portland State ranked third in the nation in total offense (first in the Big Sky) and third in rushing offense (second in the Big Sky). The Viking program has averaged 200+ rushing yards per game in all seven seasons that Barnum has been on the Park Blocks. Though this is Barnum’s first head coaching posi-tion, he has more than 25 years of coaching experience and 15 years as an offensive coordinator. Barnum is the 14th head coach in the 72-year history of Portland State football.

2019 SCHEDULE NOTES• This will be the 73rd season of Portland State football (1947). Due to the extra weekend before Thanks-

giving this year, PSU will be playing a 12-game schedule for only the third time in school history (2013, 2014).

• Year in and year out Portland State football has one of the most challenging Football Championship Subdivision schedules in the country, and 2019 will be no different. The Vikings play a pair of FBS oppo-nents, Arkansas and Boise State, and face two Top-10 programs from 2018 - national runner-up Eastern Washington and UC Davis.

• This will be the 10th time that Portland State has played at least two FBS level programs in the same season (the Vikings played three in 2006).

• Portland State plays two lower division schools in 2019 (Simon Fraser, NCAA II; Eastern Oregon, NAIA). The Vikings are 16-0 in games against lower division opponents since moving to Division I in 1996. It marks the first time PSU has played two lower division schools since 2013.

• PSU faces only five teams in 2019 that were on the schedule in 2018 (Idaho State, Idaho, Northern Colorado, Montana, Eastern Washington).

• In the Big Sky Conference’s unusual 14-team format in 2019 (Idaho returned in football in 2018 and North Dakota has departed but remains in the scheduling rotation until 2020), Portland State faces just eight of the other 13 members. PSU will miss Big Sky schools Weber State, Montana State, Cal Poly and Sacramento State on their schedule in 2019. In addition, the Vikings will play Northern Arizona for only the third time in seven years and first time on the road in 2012.

• It is incumbent upon the Portland State program to create a home field advantage at Hillsboro Stadium. In the 17 games it has played all-time at the surburban stadium, PSU is 7-10. Portland State played the entire 2000 (4-2) and 2010 (1-3) seasons at Hillsboro due to construction at Providence Park. In 2018, the Vikings played four of five home games at Hillsboro (1-3). Including some one-off contests in other seasons, PSU is now 7-10 all-time at Hillsboro Stadium as its home field.

THESE ARE NOT TYPOS Yes, it’s true. Viking newcomer John Krahn is 6-foot-10, 410 pounds. Would that make him the biggest Viking ever? Yes, it would. The biggest player in college football this season? Without scanning hundreds of college football rosters, we will say... possibly, probably. Krahn is a junior college transfer from Riverside Community College. He played high school football at King HS in Riverside. Perhaps just as interesting as Krahn’s height and weight is his arm length. Krahn was measured at 36.5 inches arm length in the spring - a full three inches longer than any other player on the team. That reach should be handy while blocking on the offensive line. Also on the line in 2019 is JR Daniel Giannosa. He moves over after two seasons at tight end to play offensive tackle. Giannosa came to PSU as a 6-8, 240-pound freshman. He now stands 6-9 1/2 and 280 pounds.

STAFF CHANGES Portland State has added Skyler Fulton to its coaching staff as the new wide receivers coach. Fulton spent the past two seasons coaching with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Vikings lost a pair of coaches in the off-season. Nick Whitworth, formerly the special teams coordinator, moved on to a similar position at Texas State. AC Patterson, formerly the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, is now with the Minnesota Vikings. Assistant coach Evan Mozzochi is now coaching quarterbacks and tight ends. He, along with defen-sive backs coach Colin Fry, are in charge of recruiting. Defensive Coordinator Payam Saadat was elevated to the role of Associate Head Coach in the off-season as well.

VIKINGS TABBED 10TH IN PRESASON POLLS OF 13-TEAM BIG SKY The Big Sky Conference released preseason coaches and media polls in July with Portland State picked 10th in both polls in the 13-team league. The Vikings will strive to better those projections as they did last season. In 2018, PSU was picked last, but finished in a tie for ninth at 3-5, which included a win over nationally-ranked Montana. Preseason rankings are always a challenge in the Big Sky as teams only play eight of the other 12 members in a given season. That means the schedule in a given year has a significant impact on a team’s potential – it could feature a very strong group of opponents, a weaker group, or somewhere in the mid-dle. On paper, Portland State’s schedule appears to be challenging once again. The Vikings will play at 2018 national finalist Eastern Washington (Nov. 23) – which has been picked to win the Big Sky in both polls. The Vikings will host consensus number two pick UC Davis (Nov. 9), as well as 4/5 pick Montana (Nov. 2). PSU also meets Southern Utah (Oct. 5) and Northern Colorado (Oct. 19), schools ranked below the Vikings, and three schools in the middle of the polls: Northern Arizona (Oct. 26), Idaho State (Sept. 28) and Idaho (Oct. 12).Tyler Harman

REMEMBERING DEANTE Deante Strickland never played a down for the Portland State Football team, but he will never be forgotten. Strickland, who played basketball for two seasons with the Vikings, earned his degree in June and was preparing to compete in football in his fifth year. But the former Central Catholic (OR) football and basketball star never got the chance. He died tragically on Aug. 2 at the hands of a senseless act of violence. Strickland was a popular and well-known Portlander for his athletic achievements. After compet-ing at Casper College in Wyoming he came back to PSU and played two seasons of basketball, competing in 65 games for the Vikings. His love for football never waned, and after completing his basketball career, Strickland knew he wanted to get back on the gridiron. Although that dream did not come true, he will always be remembered by his Viking Family. Rest in peace, Deante.

ruary 2014. TE Julius Thomas (‘10, Denver) and DB DeShawn Shead (‘11, Seattle) both played in Super Bowl XLVIII. Shead returned to the Super Bowl in 2015 with the Seahawks. He joins Clint Didier and Ted Popson as former Vikings with Super Bowl rings. Thomas was named a Pro Bowl tight end in 2013 and 2014. In the 2014 off-season, he signed the richest tight end contract in the NFL to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thomas retired in the 2018 off-season after a seven-year career that included 71 games, 226 receptions, 2,406 yards and 36 touchdowns. Shead, a starting corner with the Seahawks in 2016, missed 2017 due to an ACL injury, then signed and played with Detroit in 2018.

• LB Patrick Onwuasor starred with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 while LS Kameron Canaday was a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers and DB DeShawn Shead was with the Detroit Lions.

2019 SEASON PREVIEW If you are around Portland State Football Head Coach Bruce Barnum for any length of time you will, at some point, hear him say - “The plan is coming together” - sometimes in seriousness, sometimes in jest. However, there is no question he means it in all seriousness when discussing his Viking football team in 2019. After spending the past couple of seasons rebuilding from the ground up, Barnum will put a team on the field that has the most experience since the playoff squad of 2015. And that experience should begin to show. Though the Vikings still have more combined freshmen and sophomores than they have junior and seniors - and the senior class is still the smallest of the four - Portland State can boast 46 returning letterwinners, including 19 starters (nine on offense, eight on defense and two on special teams). The plan also included an earlier spring practice season, running from late February to mid-March. That allowed the team a longer rest and recuperation period off the field, but also a long, uninterrupted stretch of weight training through the spring and summer. Spring practice also included a lot more live sessions than normal, allowing a still relatively young squad to get more “game-like” experience. “The only way to learn football is to play it and we played more football this spring than I’ve ever done in my life as a college coach,” Barnum said. “My philosophy is, we didn’t make the playoffs so those playoff teams got a lot more football in than we did. We’re going to catch up.” Barnum expects a modest (though vastly improved) 4-7 record in 2018 to blossom into a winning record in 2019.

OFFENSE A youthful offense last season now features upperclassmen at quarterback, eight letterwinners at

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

PORTLAND STATEAND VIKING FOOTBALL

Portland State University, located in Portland, OR, is the second-largest school in the state of Oregon with 28,407 students. It was founded in 1946 as Van-port College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior col-lege in 1946-47, but competed in the Oregon Colle-giate Conference at the NAIA level from 1950 to 1964, winning three OCC football titles (1962, 1963, 1964). PSU became a four-year institution in 1955. Portland State joined the NCAA in 1965 and com-peted at the College Division level (the forerunner of NCAA II). PSU was an NCAA 1-AA member from 1978-80, then moved back to Division II in 1981, where it competed through the 1995 season. The Vikings were members of the Western Football Conference from 1982 to 1992, winning six conference championships. PSU made eight NCAA II playoff appearances from 1987 to 1995. In 1996, Portland State moved to the Big Sky Con-ference and up to the NCAA 1-AA (now FCS) level. The Vikings made their first playoff appearance at their current level in 2000. In 2015, Portland State had its best season ever at the Division I level, compiling a 9-3 record and reaching the NCAA playoffs. Portland State’s football program has produced such legendary figures as Coach Mouse Davis, quarter-backs Neil Lomax and June Jones, Tom Oberg (the first Viking to play in the NFL), Coach Pokey Allen (who led the Vikings to two NCAA II National Championship ap-pearances), and some 30 players who have appeared in the NFL. In 2014, three former Vikings reached NFL Cham-pionship games: Julius Thomas with Denver, DeShawn Shead with Seattle and Jordan Senn with Carolina. Thomas and Shead went on to meet in Super Bowl XL-VIII with their respective teams and Shead became a Super Bowl Champion - just the third former PSU Viking to do so (Clint Didier, Ted Popson). Shead made a return appearance to the Super Bowl in 2015, while Thomas was selected to his second Pro Bowl in as many years. He later signed a free agent contract with the Jackson-ville Jaguars, making him the highest paid tight end in the NFL. Portland State football plays at Hillsboro Stadium, west of downtown, a 7,200-seat stadium.

wide receiver (after having one in 2018), nine at offensive line, three at running back and three at tight end. Davis Alexander (5-11, 195) and Jalani Eason (5-11, 185) have run virtually all the plays behind center the past two seasons. Now both juniors, the dual-threat quarterbacks have the moxie to lead the Viking offense. Alexander started 10 of 11 games last year, had more than 2,000 yards of total offense and was responsible for 23 touchdowns. Eason had over 700 yards of offense and six touchdowns. Rutgers transfer Jalen Chatman (FR, 6-0, 185) may also have something to say at quarterback. He was originally recruited by the Vikings and was able to compete in spring practice. Portland State’s “by-committee” running game lost senior Darian Green (470 yards), but returns seniors Carlos Martin (5-11, 205) and Sirgeo Hoffman (6-0, 215) to lead that group. Despite injury time for both, they combined for over 600 yards and four touchdowns. Alexander and Eason had nearly 800 yards and 15 touchdowns in the running game. Junior college transfers Evyn Holtz (5-9, 190, American River College) and Malik Walker (6-0, 190, Riverside CC) are also expected to have an impact in the backfield. The passing game begins with All-American tight end Charlie Taumoepeau (6-3, 245). The senior is so well-respected, that despite missing a big chunk of the middle of last season due to injury, he still garnered first team All-Big Sky Conference recognition and a host of All-America awards. He was leading the nation in touchdowns and yards per catch after three weeks but an ankle injury cost him a couple of games and slowed him in several others. Taumoepeau still finished with 28 catches for 580 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Vikings. Right behind Taumoepeau is another talented tight end in junior AJ Ruffin (6-5, 250, 15-177-0) and, returning from injury, sophomore Malik Thirdgill (6-4, 240). Perhaps the most improved group on the roster is at wide receiver. The Vikings ran a host of fresh-men and sophomores on the field last year, and they had virtually no collegiate experience. A year later, they look very good. Sophomores Mataio Talalemotu (6-1, 180, 23-402-2) and Emmanuel Daigbe (6-1, 200, 23-373-4) combined to start 20 games last season. They should see a big advancement in their games in 2019. Sophomores Davis Koetter (6-2, 195) and George McCorley (6-3, 200) and senior Jacob Bystry (6-0, 180) are all experienced players now adding great depth at the wideout spot. The slot receiver position is one area from which Barnum is demanding more production. The Vikings should be loaded with juniors Easton Trakel (5-9, 180) and Antwone Williams (5-8, 170) and sophomore Beau Kelly (5-9, 165). Trakel and Kelly combined for 17 catches last season and would have had more, but both spent significant time on the sidelines with injuries. Williams moves over from running back to take advantage of his open-field running skills. In addition, JoJo Siofele (5-10, 205) may find a role at slot receiver or in the backfield as a true freshman. The offensive line will be anchored by All-Conference guard Korbin Sorensen (6-6, 305), now a ju-nior. Sorensen is likely to move to the left tackle spot in 2019. Another returning starter is center Garrett Stauffer (6-4, 295), who was granted a sixth year of eligibility after having two injury seasons (2015 and 2017). Stauffer has started at center the last 16 games he has been healthy. Speaking of health, the Vikings starting right tackle, Carlos Barraza (6-3, 300), will try to bounce back from a spring leg injury. Whether he is ready to go in the fall has yet to be determined. Fortunately for the Vikings, a number of experienced players are back to compete for starting time. Sophomore Tyson Pauling (6-5, 310) had a preseason injury last year, but came back to start four games at guard for the Vikings. Sophomore Brady Brick (6-5, 285), seniors Larry Brister (6-2, 285) and Spencer Reed (6-3, 270) and junior Tommy Laverde (6-5, 290) have all seen game action at guard. Another letterwinner is Daniel Giannosa, who has spent the past two seasons at tight end. At 6-9, 280 pounds, Giannosa has been moved over to tackle and showed signs of potential during spring practice. A group of redshirts, led by Babak Ghadaksaz (6-2, 300), Shiloh Ta’ase (6-3, 275) and Alex Rock-well (6-3, 270) are also ready to go, while the Vikings have brought in an intriguing newcomer in 6-10, 410-pound John Krahn from Riverside Community College. Krahn has been touted as (though not confirmed to be) the biggest man in college football. His time in spring practice with the Vikings showed he will have a role. “Somebody is going to have to run around him,” Barnum said of the big man. “Very few will run through him, and if they do they have to climb a mountain and run back down the other side he’s so big.”

DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings also return a solid group of players. Defensive Coor-dinator Payam Saadat will have to answer the question at middle linebacker though as last year’s two anchors, Kasun Jackett and Houston Barnes, were seniors. Up front, the Vikings may have the most experience with senior tackles Kenton Bartlett (6-3, 275) and Anthony Del Toro (6-2, 295). Bartlett was third team All-Big Sky. Those two, along with junior Semise Kofe (6-1, 310, HM All-Big Sky) provide a big, strong rotation in the middle. Improved pass rushing is a continued area of emphasis for the Viking defense. It will come from a number of sources, but PSU needs it from the defensive end spot. Starting defensive end Noah Yunker (6-4, 250) is back following a break-through season. An ankle

injury ended his year early, but the junior should be healthy for fall camp. Senior Shawn Richard (6-2, 235) and sophomore Jake Porter (6-4, 245) are the other two letterwinners back at defensive end. A transfer from Washington, Jarryn Bush (6-1, 265), will be counted on to contribute at the rush end position. Junior college transfer Jayson Pace (6-2, 260) and redshirt freshman James Thomas (6-1, 245) will be looked to to break through and contribute at defensive end as well. The whip linebacker role is a type of hybrid stand-up defensive lineman, and the Vikings have re-turning experience there as well with juniors Nicolas Ah Sam (6-1, 250) and Dylan Hanley (6-2, 225) and sophomore Boogie Davis (6-3, 255) returning. Sophomore transfer Moses Finau (6-1, 240) also brings an intriguing talent and size to the role. Finau has one year experience at Division II Humboldt State where he was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. A number of players contended for the middle linebacker role during spring practice. Junior Steffen Jacobsen (6-2, 220) may have a chance to fulfill his promise at the position as he enters fall camp at the top of the depth chart. Isaiah Henry (5-11, 205) and Storm Crozier (6-1,185) are a pair of redshirt freshmen who are trying to break through at the position as well. Senior Romeo Gunt (5-10, 190) is likely to lead the rover position in 2019. Gunt became a big factor on defense from mid-season forward last year and was one of PSU’s top playmakers. He is the team’s top returning tackler with 58 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery last year. Sophomore Robert Holt (6-2, 215) returns at the position and redshirt freshmen David Joseph (6-1, 200) appears ready to go as a contributor. Portland State’s defensive backfield has the most overall experience with six returning letterwinners and all four starters. Barnum feels that group could be the strength of the team in 2019. Safeties Ryan Lesch (6-1, 200) and Anthony Adams (6-0, 180) combined for 90 tackles. Adams added seven pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery. He is just a sophomore and will be a key member of the defense for seasons to come. Junior Sam Inos (5-11, 190) is experienced after four starts last year and provides depth at the safety positions as does transfer KJ Walker (6-0, 175), a redshirt at Boise State last year. At cornerback, starters Maxwell Howell (6-2, 190) and Deon Crayon (6-2, 180) both return as well as key backup Montre Brown (6-1, 185). All three had interceptions last season and combined for more than 50 tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS Portland State should be solid on special teams with the return of senior long snapper Riley Shack-elford (6-1, 235) and sophomore kicker Cody Williams (5-10, 190). Shackelford started every game of his career until a mid-season knee injury last year. He will be available when the season starts and delivering to Williams on a regular basis. As a true freshman, Williams opened eyes with a 52-yard game-winning field goal at Montana in the closing seconds. He produced 11-14 field goals overall, all 37 extra point attempts, and earned third team All-Big Sky honors. The Vikings have brought in junior college transfer Seth Vernon (6-5, 230) to handle punting duties this season.

GET ON THE BUS: THE AMERICANA TOUR Portland State Football Coach Bruce Barnum is renowned for taking his team on the bus to as many road games as possible. He calls it “The Americana Tour.” It has made for some long bus rides, but Bar-num often lets his team out to see the sights. Barnum also feels it promotes team unity (and saves a few dollars in the budget). In the past four years, PSU has logged 16,282 bus miles with a “program record” of 4,906 in 2016.• Coach Barnum led his first “Americana Tour” in 2015, which included bus rides to Pullman, WA,

Pocatello, ID, San Luis Obispo, CA, and Cheney, WA. In all, the Vikings logged 4,394 bus miles and approximately 80 hours round trip to those four destinations (PSU also flew on two road trips). The Americana Tour included such things as dozens of on-bus movies, a stop to buy a lottery ticket on the way home from beating Washington State, a practice on Boise State’s blue turf, a sight-seeing trip to Alcatraz (in which equipment manager Mike Haluska was left on the island… but soon retrieved), and a midnight McDonald’s run at a lonely truck stop in eastern Oregon. In addition to the economy of the bus trips, Barnum contends the time together draws the Viking team closer.

• The 2016 Americana Tour included round trips to San Jose, Seattle and Sacramento (twice). There was also a return bus ride from Ogden, UT and a shorter trip from Las Vegas to Cedar City... the trip to San Jose was a total of 1,340 miles. It included a stop off at Oregon Wildlife Safari and the obligatory In-and-Out Burger visitation in Medford... on the trip to Southern Utah, PSU flew into Las Vegas, took in the Criss Angel Show at the Luxor Hotel and made another midnight In-and-Out run... while traveling to Weber State, PSU visited Temple Square and the Hogle Zoo... after a pair round trips to Sacramento (UC Davis and Sacramento State), PSU had accumulated 4,906 bus miles for the season.

• The 2017 season was limited to just three bus trips: Oregon State, Idaho State and Eastern Washington. There was also a bus portion from San Jose, CA to Cal Poly. And, Portland State’s trip to Corvallis was a mere 168 miles round trip. The Americana Tour bus trip to Pocatello, ID was 660 miles one way, 1,320 miles round trip. The Vikings made a stop in Pendleton and toured the Pendleton Rodeo Museum and Hall of Fame, as well as a stop along the Snake River... the Vikings had bus travel from San Jose Airport

to San Luis Obispo for the game at Cal Poly. It was 376 miles round trip and included a stop over on the Monterey Peninsula on the way down. No golf was played... the final week’s bus trip from PSU to Eastern Washington was 339 miles one way, 678 round trip. That made the Vikings’ Americana Tour for 2017 a total of 2,542 miles.

• In 2018 Portland State made bus trips to five different states. They includ-ed Nevada (1,156 miles round trip), Oregon (218 miles), Idaho (718 miles), Montana (1,098 miles) and Sacramento State (1,158 miles). That made for a total of 4,348 bus miles.

• The 2019 Americana Tour started early as the Vikings bussed to Camp Rilea Armed Forces Training Center in Warrenton, OR (176 miles round trip) for the first three days of preseason practice. The Vikings stayed in the barracks, ate at the mess hall and practice on a makeshift field on the Helipad. Numerous team bonding exercises took place, including bowling night, a beach bonfire and three hours of liberty in Seaside, OR... only three bus trips are on the docket for 2019. They include Boise State (864 miles round trip), Idaho State (1,326 miles) and Eastern Washington (678 miles). Total bus miles for 2019 are 3,044.

2018 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS• Although the Vikings had a modest 4-7 record overall, it was a four-game

improvement over a winless 2017 season. PSU won three straight games at midseason, marking their longest winning streak since 2015. A 22-20 victory at 14th-ranked Montana was the first over a nationally-ranked team since 2015 and a first-ever Big Sky Conference win in Missoula.

• JR TE Charlie Taumoepeau was named second team All-American by STATS Inc. and Hero Sports in their post-season award selections.

• JR TE Charlie Taumoepeau led a list of seven Vikings honored by the Big Sky Conference. Taumoepeau was named 1st team All-Big Sky after earning pre-season All-Big Sky and preseason All-America honors. Named third team All-Big Sky were SR LT Josh Brown, SO RG Korbin Sorensen, FR K Cody Williams and JR DT Kenton Bartlett. SR DE Larry Ross and SO DT Semise Kofe earned honorable mention All-Big Sky.

• SO DE Noah Yunker was named CoSIDA Academic All-District. He was one of 25 Division I players from all conferences in the eight western states to earn

the honor. Yunker goes to the national ballot in December. • Portland State had a record 19 student-athletes named to the Academic

All-Big Sky Conference list in 2018. Included were: FR S Anthony Adams, SR LB Houston Barnes, JR DT Kenton Bartlett, FR OL Brady Brick, JR OL Larry Brister, SO QB Jalani Eason, SO TE Daniel Giannosa, JR ROV Romeo Gunt, SO WR Nathan Hawthorne, JR RB Sirgeo Hoffman, SO LB Steffen Jacobsen, JR S Ryan Lesch, SO P Ben Niesner, FR DE Jake Porter, FR S Jared Reed, JR DE Shawn Richard, SO OL Korbin Sorensen, FR WR Mataio Talalemotu, SO DE Noah Yunker.

• FR K Cody Williams earned Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors after kicking a 52-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to lead PSU to a 22-20 win at Montana on Oct. 6. It was Williams’ third field goal of the game and gave PSU its first-ever Big Sky Conference win in Missoula.

QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL: SO QBs Davis Alexander and Jalani Eason split time during the season, although Alexander got the majority of the snaps, starting 10 games.• The QB combo was very effective, combining to pass for 14 touchdowns and

only seven interceptions. In all, PSU passed for 2,193 yards (199.4 per game) and averaged 14.7 yards per completion (15th in the nation).

• The tandem also rushed for 786 yards on 171 carries with 15 touchdowns. Not counting sack yardage, they had 962 positive yards (87.4 yards per game).

• Alexander completed 126-238 passes for 1,786 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ranked second on the team with 424 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs - the most by a Viking since 2013 - and had one reception for 17 yards.

• In 13 career starts, Alexander is 208-382 (.544) for 2,951 yards (227.0 per game), 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions... he passed for 409 yards at Cal Poly in his starting debut in 2017.

• Eason completed 21-40 passes for 343 yards, three touchdowns and no in-terceptions. He also rushed for 362 yards and three touchdowns... in a win over Sacramento State, Eason had touchdown runs of 82 and 47 yards, fin-ishing with a career-high 165 yards.
