To our Community,

As I write this thank-you letter, I am locked in my house for my 36th day! This is not how I had imagined our volunteer and donor appreciation event looking.

Krystal Valencia, the Director of Development at Home Suite Hope (HSH), had organized a fun evening at the Oakville Club that included snacks, beverages, thank-you speeches and the reveal of our new infomercial.

After such a difficult 2018, we as an orga-nization were looking so forward to joining you all to celebrate, and appreciate, all that you made possible in 2019.

In 2018, under the leadership of Britta Martini-Miles, the process of rebuilding HSH began. A paramount part of this was working to reconnect our community to the organiza-tion. Britta passed the torch to me at the beginning of 2019, and the team at HSH and I kept gaining momentum. 2019 was a resounding success, thanks in large part to all of you!

Like many of you, I have been experiencing down days since the start of the COVID-19 crisis. This is difficult for everyone; however, we are very lucky to live in the era of technology! Our computer, internet, cellphones, Netflix, CRAVE, Amazon Prime, gaming systems etc. are keeping us and our children occupied.

Our participants do not have the same experience of this crisis as most of us. Most do not have the extras that make this more bearable and are forced to finish their own school-ing, while also attempting to home school their children. This crisis is at times unbearable for them. This crisis how-ever has also reinforced the gratitude we feel for all of you.

Your outstanding combined commitment helped safeguard 23 single parents and their 53 children from enduring this homeless. Home Suite Hope’s community of volunteers and donors wrapped their arms around us in 2019 allowing us to strengthen every aspect of programming, and staffing. Your support allowed us to move 9 families from home-lessness to Home Suite Hope programming in our biggest intake to date.

NINE NEW FAMILIES MOVED FROM HOMELESSNESS BECAUSE OF YOUR

SUPPORT. That begged repeating!

In addition to this, we were financially stable enough to bear the impact of the first month of COVID-19 without too much disruption to capacity to pro-vide support. As most of you know, I have worked as a researcher with marginal-ized populations in many communities

across Canada prior to settling my work life in the Halton Region. What has al-

ways impressed me about this community is the collaborative and innovative approach-

es to supporting your struggling neighbours.

Homeward Bound Halton is its fifth year of a successful collaboration with the Halton Region, Sheridan College, Oakville Community Foundation (OCF), and the YMCA of Oakville, and its fifth year of funding from Genworth Canada and the Peter Gilgan Foundation. This collabora-tion has allowed 11 single moms to graduate from college and disrupt generational poverty in its tracks.

Our volunteer pool grew substantially this past year, helping us to continue with our fresh produce from Blue-berry Fields and with providing holiday gifts and meals to our participants.

In addition this past year, we were able to reinstate a new and improved Industry Council to help guide our participants in the world of employment, and solidify a two-pronged mentorship program including executives at Sheridan College and devoted community members.

In addition, 2019 saw the very successful return of Empty Bowls due in large part to an astounding committee of volunteers, sponsors and donors. Additionally, our past participants banded together to launch the volunteer Alumni Committee to give back to HSH and provide guidance to our new participants.

Your individual, foundation, religious, service club and corporate donations have allowed us to ensure that our families are experiencing food security and are able to continue to build their competencies through life skills and professional development training.

Thanks from our Executive Director

Thank you from everyone at HSHThe Zonta Club and Well Dressed Homes helped to ensure that each new family had home furnishings as they moved from homelessness to their very own apartments.

Philip Feitz, owner of It’s the Right Move, volunteered his time and his truck to move many of our families.

St. Jude’s Anglican Church provided our first “start of school” donation allowing us to purchase every single student — mothers and children — backpacks full of school supplies, and refurbished laptops for each of our nine new participants.

We were also the recipients of a new website through 7Com-munications, which features videos by Bob Fleck and Fleck Productions highlighting our programs and participants.

And, for the first time ever we were able to offer a partici-pant’s child a scholarship to their first year in postsecond-ary through FCT’s William G. Davis Scholarship program.

I would be remiss to not also thank HSH’s volunteer Board of Directors who banded together, strengthened, commit-ted, encouraged and supported my staff and I through all of the challenges and victories of 2019. We recognize all that

you do for this organization in addition to your full-time careers and family obligations.

We sincerely wanted to have the opportunity to thank all of you in person as there are just too many of you to list in this opening letter. Writing lists upon lists of supporters was never the intention, however in this time of social distancing, it is the best we can do. We did not want to let Volunteer Appreciation Week pass without acknowledging all that you do.

Please know that we at Home Suite Hope — Board of Directors, Staff and participants alike are filled with sin-cere appreciation of each and every one of you. Thank you for committing to permanently changing lives for the better.

We raise a proverbial glass to each of you,

Sara and the HSH staff

Seventeen families living in Oakville, Burlington and Milton are looking to connect with 17 partners to help them journey from homelessness or precarious housing to a stable home, education and a brighter future — hope. As 2020 loomed on the horizon, Halton-based Home Suite Hope (HSH) officially launched its newest mission on Giving Tuesday Dec. 3 in 2019 to help make those con-nections happen under the banner of its new Partners in Change campaign. The families are led by single parents, moms working hard to make a new life for themselves and their children. All hail from harrowing life journeys. One fled an abusive relationship, another’s world crashed when she was blind-sided by the discovery of a spouse making pornographic videos of their child. Yet another is struggling to parent her child — a gift, albeit born of an unexpected pregnancy. All turned to non-profit Home Suite Hope to get back on track — in an effort to give their children the best they can. After meeting eligibility criteria, they enter the multi-pronged Stabilizing First Halton, through which families get their feet on the ground with housing and life skills. It’s fol-lowed, if the academic upgrading proves promising, by the elite employment program known as Homeward Bound Hal-ton, a scholarship two-year college education — in marketable programs in either academic or skilled trades — through partner Sheridan College. That’s followed by a year of employment training, job searching and aftercare. Wraparound supports are also provided, including intensive case management, a rental subsidy, community referrals, mentorships from Sheridan executive-level staff and volunteers, and partnerships with industry leaders. ‘Graduates’, who now earn above average salaries and provide stable homes for their children, are beacons of hope thanks to the program’s success. Of the $48,075 total annual cost per family, $38,571 is secured through HSH’s funding collaborations, however each year, we fall short by $9,534, which draws our attention to the importance of having active donors.

In this report, you will read about the hundreds of individuals and corporates who have made our programs possible.

Dear friends of Home Suite Hope,

Similar to Home Suite Hope’s (HSH) wrap-around approach in changing the trajectory of single-parent families’ lives, the Halton community wraps around HSH, too, in times of despair — igniting hope for our future.

As highlighted throughout this booklet, our beloved HSH community has shown its support in a variety of ways: whether it be monetary, in-kind, or volunteering time. Every bit counts, no matter how big or small.

Home Suite Hope would not have touched the lives of so many Halton-based families, without those who believed in us since the start.

Dedicated volunteers and community leaders, such as Glen and Ann Herring and Michael Shaen, have paved the way to ensure the pieces were put in place for Homeward Bound Halton (HBH) — our flag-ship program, which has made an impact on the lives of over 60 single-parents and children in our neighbour-hoods.

Individuals and corporations alike have come together to ensure HSH will weather any storm, and HSH’s 2020 theme of Adversity, Resilience, and Success proves to be no different.

Thanks from our Director of Development

CHANGING THE PATTERNS OF POVERTY TO A LEGACY OF PROSPERITY

The Taylor Group has been instrumental in successfully implementing our signature

fundraising event Empty Bowls and Crack Pot Studio and Sheridan College’s Ceramics Studio put the bowls into our Empty Bowls event; Genworth Canada and The Peter Gilgan Foundation supported the replication

of Homeward Bound Halton since its first day; Ken Stockstill spends numerous

hours every week managing our community gardens where Meagan Richardson has been an

invaluable volunteer; Vanessa & Mark Barr pledged a multi-year personal gift to our core programming; and the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF and its fund holders have come through to gift, not only by increasing their annual giving, but by introducing us to industry lead-ers who volunteer on our Industry Council.

The programs HSH offers are beyond here and now — the residual impact will span generations. And it’s your commitment to our organization, today and every day, that will push HSH and our families to have a brighter and more prosperous tomorrow.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all that you do for us,

KrystalKrystal Valencia
