During 2019, Jesus Christ, our cornerstone, was active in creating new ways to encounter Him and his people through God’s gifts of Nawakwa, Kirchenwald, and the Wittel Farm . Christ was made known and the gospel was proclaimed to all who participated in and supported LCC’s unique ministries of summer camp, retreats, day camp, confirmation camps, family camps, facility rentals for spiritual formation, and the growing projects.

The mission of the LCC, to serve, support, and extend the ministry of the congregations of the Lower Susquehanna Synod, was enhanced and grew because of the spirit-led dedication and generosity of many ministry partners who guided and participated in this ministry in 2019 . Thank you for your leadership, support, and thoughtful kindness .

This annual report is shared as a way of reporting our 2019 ministry activity . We give thanks for your partnership in ministry . We also give thanks for the foundation of those “apostles and prophets” of the past who helped establish this unique ministry and have entrusted us with its care . We also give thanks to God for calling us to serve in so many exciting ways .

Although this report is about 2019 ministry year, I’d be remiss if I didn’t address, at least briefly, two significant ministry occurrences of the current year:

• The first is the COVID-19 pandemic. Yes, it is heartbreaking that the 2020 summer ministry season was unable to happen . I miss seeing our campers as much as they miss being with us . Although it is a far stretch from the typical summer camp program, we are pleased to offer cabin rentals for those who wish to get away to the camps this summer as well as some small group retreat rental (information is on the LCC web site) . We look forward to the fall with the expectation that retreat ministry will resume, and we have already begun planning for the 2021 summer camp season . I know the strong ministry foundation established by so many generous and supportive friends will continue to sustain these ministries which we all care so much about .

• Second is to acknowledge and thank Marianne Brock for her long and impactful ministry as Nawakwa’s as camp director as she moves on to new ministry as the Regional Gift Planner for the ELCA Foundation .

Introduction


As we press on through the first few months of 2020, no doubt you too have experienced a change in the way you interact with others. Our routines have been amended and our social circles have shrunk. What an important time to reflect on our Bible study theme from camp last summer- Transformed Community. How do we continue to be a community of disciples in a time when community is so hard?

The truth is, being in community has always been a challenge . Jesus reminds us of that through his parables that forced the early listeners to shift their perspective of what it meant to be people together . Those same parables are still pertinent today . The wedding banquet from Luke 14 . The Good Samaritan from Luke 10 . The laborers in the vineyard from Matthew 20 . All three of these stories, which we studied at camp, bring a transformative power to our preconceptions of what it means to be community. Jesus teaches inclusion, compassion, and justice - values that we practiced at Kirchenwald last summer and that will serve us well in the world today .

Just as nothing can separate us from God’s love, nothing can separate us from the love we have for one another as a camp community . 2019 was a summer of great communal growth and celebration . We looked back on 50 years of ministry, rejoicing in the people and experiences that brought us to where we are today. And there is a lot to be joyful about. Our community included 432 youth and adult campers, plus an additional 71 confirmation campers. Compassion abounded for the 40 children who enjoyed their week as part of Camp LionHeart. And 67 of God’s passionate children dutifully brought a sense of faithful justice to their full days of service as staff (28) and volunteers (39) for the program.

Thank you to all who were a part of the Kirchenwald community this past year and over the past five decades. We eagerly prepare a place for you and all the beloved as we continue to transform as community together .

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25

As I write this, we are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The words “uncertain” and “unprecedented” pepper nearly every news story, every commercial, and sermon we hear . Today, the wind is whipping through the hillsides and valleys at Nawakwa and those tall, tall white pine trees are swaying in that way that makes me a little jumpy. Strong rains blew through a few nights ago, and new “streambeds” crisscross the wide path out to Fischer Memorial Chapel .

In spite of all of this, Nawakwa looks pretty much like it always has . Assembly Hall stands in the center of camp, daffodils are shooting up through the ground, and the deciduous trees are faithfully budding and blooming … all of this pointing hopefully to a new season of camp… even in these uncertain times.

We know that all times are uncertain; we are not ever promised tomorrow .

And yet, as children of a God who works through resurrection – bringing new life from death – we step forward in hope, knowing that God can do great things .

Over 90 years ago, when the world was also living through uncertain and unprecedented times, Nawakwa was prayed into existence in the hope that this camp would be a shining light in the darkness and a place of (Lutheran) leadership development for the sake of the world . And here we are, still working toward those same goals .

We give thanks to all of you who have given so generously to continue to strengthen the firm foundation on which this ministry has been built. We’ve withstood rains and winds and floods, and even epidemics in the past. With your continued support, we will continue to do the same, now and into the future .

A sower went out to sow hi seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundred fold. Luke 8:5-8

The ministry at The Wittel Farm is one of sowing seeds - all kinds of seeds . We sow the seeds of faith formation, spiritual renewal, and Christian community as we gather together in prayer, worship, and Bible study . As those seeds take root and grow, those who visit The Wittel Farm grow in faith, enjoy Christian fellowship, and the Church is strengthened .

Those spiritual seeds also grow as we gather and work together, planting actual seeds that grow into nutritious vegetables which are harvested and given away through various food distribution partners to help reduce food insecurity across south central Pennsylvania. In 2019, The Wittel Farm Growing Project donated nearly 16,000 pounds of vegetables into the food relief system .

The Wittel Farm is a quiet, peaceful ministry site for personal and small group retreat, as well as a place where many come to practice discipleship by caring for our hungry neighbors . All who visit The Wittel Farm experience a Christ-centered ministry, from which they emerge renewed and encouraged to go forth and proclaim the Gospel . This outstanding ministry is only possible because of the generous support of many, many individuals, congregations, and organizations helping The Wittel Farm be a place where the Gospel is alive and active . Every year the Lutheran Camping Corporation is supported and enriched by the generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure of countless ministry partners who generously give in so many ways. 2019 was no different! We give thanks to God for these wonderful gifts and for all who have given, in many and various ways, in support of this vibrant ministry .

In 2019 56 congregations and 640 individuals made contributions in support of LCC ministries .

The Lower Susquehanna Synod of the ELCA provided $71,836.70 in financial support.

$31,785 in Campership assistance was provided to 91 children who would have missed our joyful and faith-building ministry due to financial hardship.

71 golfers participated in the Annual Golf Tournament raising $7,851.37 for the campership fund through the charitable portion of the registration fee, through sponsorships from businesses and individuals .

47 individuals, 22 churches, and 2 businesses donated quilts, crafts, and other items to make the Quilt & Craft Auction a success, raising $14,064.70 to grow the Endowment Fund.

$45,769.20 in STF contributions helped reduce the Nawakwa ministry site expansion mortgage to $158,221.36. As more contributions are received and the ELCA/Lower Susquehanna Synod Always Being Made New Campaign proceeds the debt will continue to be reduced .

Thanks to Thrivent Financial which continues to be a generous ministry partner . 97 Thrivent members directed $13,313 to LCC ministries through Thrivent Choice. Other Thrivent members created Thrivent Action Teams with various projects benefitting the camps.

Generous financial support helped keep facilities attractive and user friendly, and also enabled significant ministry site improvements including the upgrade of Kirchenwald’s high ropes course .

Countless volunteer hours from camp nurses, camp chaplains, handi-men / women, kitchen helpers and others helped make the camp mission possible .

I hope that the stories, images, donor lists, and figures in this report inspire you to become deeply involved in the ministry happening at Kirchenwald, Nawakwa, and The Wittel Farm .
