August 2019 Dear Friends, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Seuss Congratulations and welcome to the 2019 Training Institute. We’re looking forward to another amazing TI; one that prepares you for another OUTSTANDING HOBY year. One of the first things Hugh ever said to me was “HOBY volunteers are the life-blood of HOBY.” Of course, as with many things, Hugh was right. Volunteers are the reason we inspire over 10,000 youth leaders each year. You bring the vision and mission of HOBY to life through all our programs. We truly cannot thank you enough. The Training Institute is a unique opportunity to expand on personal strengths and address areas for development. This weekend you’re surrounded by more than 150 amazing volunteers like you, with approximately 750 years’ worth of HOBY volunteer experience. You will have access to HOBY staff, experienced trainers, guest speakers and special guests as well. In the spirit of HOBY, you have a weekend filled with learning, networking, and fun. This is your time to build resources, adopt and adapt proven techniques, share best practices, and forge friendships that will fuel your success in the coming year and the years to come. HOBY is always a journey of inspiration and discovery, no matter your age or role. As key volunteers, you are critical in determining the success of your site, in inspiring your Ambassadors and other volunteers to be more and do more than they thought possible. You have chosen to be here, to be a HOBY volunteer. Somewhere along the way, you had an OUTSTANDING HOBY experience and you want to bring that experience to a new group of Ambassadors. Our hope for you is that you will take advantage of this TI opportunity to prepare yourself for the coming adventure.

WELCOME FROM THE TI CHAIRPERSON August 2019 Welcome HOBY Volunteers!

I am excited to be able to welcome you to the 2019 Training Institute on the behalf of the entire TI planning team. I have been a HOBY volunteer for the Texas Gulf Coast site since 2005 and currently serve as the Corporate Board President. It has been an honor to be able to also serve as the TI 2019 Chairperson and be able to lead the dedicated team of volunteers that have put so much time and effort into this experience. We have refreshed not just many of the courses at TI but also what our key goals are for you as your site’s ambassador to TI. We have worked hard to make this an event that allows you to share your knowledge and experience as well as learn from the wealth of knowledge and experience of those around you.

My first task as TI Chairperson was to pick a theme. I reflected on the experiences I’ve had in my professional life, my HOBY life, and my personal life that helped to build me into the leader that I am today. There was a point in my path where I realized that I needed to allow myself to be more open and vulnerable to be able to become the leader I wanted to be. This realization gave me the courage to share my successes AND my failures. It allowed me to share the moments when I felt confident AND the moments when I felt uncertain and overwhelmed. It created a space where I’ve been able to be built into, what I hope, is a positive, empathetic, and worthy leader that is constantly learning and growing with the help of people like you. This building process required the support of all the people around me in my professional life, my HOBY life, and my personal life. And that’s how I came to decide on the theme, “Building Each Other.”

There are things that each of our HOBY sites excel at and there are things that each of our HOBY sites need to improve. You have been chosen as an ambassador for your HOBY site to attend TI. I hope you will take advantage of this time to share the strength your site has to share and build on the areas your site needs to improve. The TI planning team has worked to develop a curriculum that will allow you to leave with actionable steps and takeaways that you can immediately use to make your site stronger. All that’s left is for you to decide to open yourself up to those vulnerable moments where you ask for help, say you don’t understand, or share something you know you do really well. We are all Building Each Other this weekend.

HUGH O’BRIAN (1925-2016)

Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership: His Lasting Legacy In 1958, Mr. O’Brian was privileged to spend nine inspirational days with the great humanitarian and 1952 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr. Albert Schweitzer at his clinic in Africa. Dr. Schweitzer’s strong belief that “the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves” impressed O’Brian. Upon his return to the United States, he put Schweitzer’s words into action by forming Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY), a non-profit organization. Its format for motivation was simple: bring a select group of high school sophomores with demonstrated leadership abilities together with a group of distinguished leaders in business, education, government, and the professions, and let the two interact. Using a question-and-answer format, the young people selected to attend a HOBY Leadership Seminar held each spring in their state get a realistic look at what it takes to be a true leader, thus better enabling them “to think for themselves.” Today HOBY offers multiple leadership development programs for high school students based on the Social Change Model of Leadership and incorporating community service. Community Leadership Workshops (CLeWs) are held each year locally for freshmen. HOBY State Leadership Seminars for sophomores are held throughout the United States every spring. The World Leadership Congress (WLC) for rising juniors is held each summer in July at a major university in the U.S. and invites students from around the world to participate. HOBY style programs are also conducted in Canada, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Iraq, Mexico, the Philippines, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The cultural differences that exist between countries of the world are explored in friendship by the American students and their international counterparts when they come together at the WLC. The HOBY experience is truly an inspirational event of a lifetime for student leaders. The Advanced Leadership Academy for juniors and seniors launched in 2013, HOBY’s 55th anniversary year. HOBY boasts more than 450,000 alumni worldwide. Its alumni programs include international tour and service trips for high school and college students. Each program year, Mr. O’Brian wrote this message to the current year’s ambassadors and we pass it on to all of you. “I don’t have any children of my own, but I’ve got a couple of hundred thousand like you out there who I’m proud to call my family. So, shine bright my friends; you are all my tomorrows and the future is yours to make outstanding!! I wish you love and Godspeed”

TRAINING INSTITUTE MISSION AND OBJECTIVES ● To provide a leadership development opportunity and motivational experience for key

volunteers who will be leading HOBY programs in their state. ● To provide key volunteers from each site with appropriate training to carry out HOBY

programs in their state. ● To provide key volunteers from each site with the opportunity to network with other

volunteers from around the country. ● To provide key volunteers from each site with the opportunity to share best practice, ask

questions, and exchange ideas with other volunteers and HOBY International staff. ● To provide tangible takeaways that will all participants to be prepared to use the

information they obtain at TI to directly benefit their site.

TRAINING INSTITUTE TRAINING FORMAT Training will be provided in the form of topic-specific sessions. Participants have the option of choosing a pre-selected Curriculum Track for their volunteer role or to customize their curriculum by choosing sessions to meet their specific training needs and/or needs of their affiliate site. HOBY staff and/or volunteers facilitate sessions and incorporate outstanding examples of good practice from sites across the country. Every session has 1-2 tangible takeaways so that participants have examples to take back and use at their site. Topics and sessions are reviewed and enhanced each year.

AWARDS CRITERIA AWARDS FOR AFFILIATE CORPORATIONS, CORPORATE BOARDS, AND THEIR PRESIDENTS Awards are based upon overall performance and the completion of milestones in the areas of Management, Finance, Program and Public Relations. Corporate Boards that meet the required criteria qualify as either Superior or Outstanding. Recognition indicates that HOBY believes the awarded Corporate Boards are the models for all corporations.

AWARDS FOR LEADERSHIP SEMINAR CHAIRPERSONS Leadership Seminars are evaluated in 5 categories: Seminar Management, Finance/Fundraising, Program, Team Leadership and Recruitment. Seminars that capture all five categories by meeting the criteria qualify as "Outstanding"; those that capture any 4 of the 5 categories qualify as "Superior"; and those that capture any 3 of the 5 qualify as "Excellent."

AWARDS FOR ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS AND THEIR ALUMNI ADVISORS Alumni Programs are evaluated based upon a point system awarded for Management, Development, and Other Activities. To receive an Outstanding Alumni Association Award a total of 45 points must be earned; for the Superior Award a total of 35 points; and the Excellence Award a total of 25 points. AWARDS FOR CLEW PROGRAMS Awards for the Directors of the Community Leadership Workshops (CLeWs) are based upon successful completion and management of CLeWs. Sites that hold 5 CLeWs with a total of 150 or more students in attendance qualify as “Outstanding”; sites that hold 4 CLeWs with a total of 120 or more students in attendance qualify as “Superior”; sites that hold 3 CLeWs with a total of 90 or more students in attendance qualify as “Excellent.” AWARDS FOR DIRECTORS OF RECRUITMENT Leadership Seminars are acknowledged for their hard work to serve more and more deserving students each year. Awards for the Directors of Recruitment are given to those seminars that achieve 100% of their student recruitment goal for the year.

SUPERLATIVES Superlatives are designed to acknowledge special achievements made by a site. These superlatives are measurable achievements that are not included in or rewarded by other awards. The superlative award will be in the form of a certificate and is announced at the annual Training Institute.

2019 TRAINING INSTITUTE VOLUNTEER TEAM

TI CHAIRPERSON: MEGAN SIP, REGION H Megan has been a HOBY volunteer since 2005 with HOBY Texas Gulf Coast (TGC). She has held many roles in TGC including Facilitator, Director of Programs, and is currently the Corporate Board President of HOBY TGC. Megan works at NASA on the Exploration Program doing vehicle systems integration. She credits her experiences and the people with which she’s worked, both within HOBY and professionally, with having helped her to learn about and build her leadership skills. She’s looking forward to being able to share what she’s learned while also continuing to learn from the wealth of knowledge brought by all the HOBY volunteers as the TI Chair this year. TI CURRICULUM LEAD: CASEY SHILLER, REGION O Casey Shiller is the Director of Operations and Corporate Board Member for HOBY Missouri and served as Leadership Seminar Chair from 2014-2018. Outside of HOBY, Casey is the Program Coordinator of Baking and Pastry Arts for St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. Casey was named the ACF’s National Chef Educator of the Year in 2012 and named the 2013 St. Louis Chef of the Year. In June 2011, Casey won the TV Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, and he appeared and garnered a second win on Cupcake Wars in 2013. Casey and his wife, Anne, enjoy travelling, attending theater, and are avid St. Louis Blues ice hockey fans. They welcomed a daughter, Allison, into their family in May 2016.

TI CURRICULUM LEAD: ERIC SEYMOUR, REGION B Eric feels passionately about the mission of HOBY. Eric came to HOBY Central Pennsylvania in 2014 as a facilitator, and he has served as the Director of Facilitators for the past two years. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Eric graduated from Dickinson College 2012 and now works in Baltimore as a Program Manager for an immigration non-profit organization.

TI CURRICULUM LEAD: NATHAN HENDRIX, REGION Y Nathan is a 2008 HOBY alumnus from Tennessee. He has served in several roles including Leadership Seminar Chair for HOBY TN for the past four years. In 2020, Nathan will be serving as a Regional Project Director for Region Y. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor’s in Software Engineering and from Johns Hopkins University with a Master’s in Computer Science. Nathan is currently an Embedded Software Engineer living in Baltimore, MD with his husband, Ken, and their dog, Fox. TI OPERATIONS CO-DIRECTOR: ASHLEY DUCHESNEAU, TENNESSEE, REGION Y Ashley is a 2004 HOBY Florida-Mid alumna and has served in several volunteer roles at various HOBY Seminars ever since. She currently lives in Nashville, TN and serves as a Regional Project Director for Region Y. Ashley currently works for Nissan North America as the Fixed Operations Manager for the Memphis District.

2019 TRAINING INSTITUTE VOLUNTEER TEAM TI OPERATIONS CO-DIRECTOR: JAY BARNHART, ARKANSAS, REGION Y Jay is a 2006 HOBY Mississippi and WLC alumnus and has been serving HOBY in several roles, including Regional Project Director for Region Y. He currently serves as Leadership Seminar Chair for HOBY Arkansas. Jay graduated from The University of Mississippi in 2012 and from The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in 2017. He is currently a Pharmacy Manager for Walgreens. Jay resides in Madison, MS.

TI OPERATIONS ASSISTANT: COURT COOK, OHIO-SOUTH, REGION O Court is a 2000 HOBY alumnus and has served HOBY in many roles including: Director of Operations, Co-Leadership Seminar Chair, Corporate Board Member as well as on the Operations Team at TI for the past several years. Court graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio in 2006. Currently, Court works for Blackboard Inc. where he manages their global real estate and facilities teams and is based in Baltimore, MD where he lives with his partner, Shawn and their two dogs Sully and Grace.

TI OPERATIONS TEAM MEMBER: SHELLEY LAVIANA, NEW YORK, REGION B Shelley was introduced to HOBY in 2002 by a co-worker. She has been volunteering with New York-East ever since and is currently serving on the seminar planning committee and the NY Corporate Board. She has held numerous volunteer positions at various HOBY programs, including HOBY OK, WLC, TI, and International Programs. She was honored as HOBY’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year. Shelley is a Regulatory Compliance Manager for Anthem, Inc. in NY.

TI PHOTOGRAPHER: LEANNE GOMPF, OHIO, REGION O LeAnne has been a volunteer with HOBY Ohio South since 2002. She has held most volunteer roles, including Corporate Board President and Leadership Seminar Chairman. LeAnne has also served as a TI volunteer as a Trainer and Photographer for several years. She has most recently taken on the role of Regional Project Director for Region O. At most HOBY events you will find LeAnne behind the lens of the camera, capturing those moments that create a lasting “visual” memory of the HOBY experience. In her spare time, LeAnne works professionally as a REALTOR with Century 21 Gold Standard and, along with her husband, Gene, owns and operates four funeral homes in the Central Ohio region. TI STAFF OPERATIONS LEAD: ROSE SANTINI, CHIEF NATIONAL PROGRAMS OFFICER Rose has been with HOBY since 1998 and has served as an Alumni Advisor, Co-Leadership Seminar Chair, Corporate Board President, District Director, and TI Operations Chair. She manages TI registration, facility requirements, travel arrangements, and general operations in support of the curriculum team. Rose has been on staff for 14 years. TI STAFF CURRICULUM LEAD: HEATHER MYERS, REGION O, DNP Heather is a 1993 Central PA alumna and has served on Seminar and CLeW Committees in Central Pennsylvania and Western New York in a variety of roles including Director of WLC Selection, Director of Program, Vice Chair of Ambassador Relations and Recruitment, Regional Project Director, and Leadership Seminar Chair. She oversees the TI curriculum, Curriculum Leads, and Trainers. Heather joined the HOBY staff in June 2018.

The HOBY Story In the summer of 1958, Hugh O’Brian received the invitation that would change his life forever. At the time, O’Brian had already made a name for himself as an actor portraying the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp on television and appearing in numerous films. When he received a cable from Dr. Albert Schweitzer welcoming him to French Equatorial Africa for a visit, he did not hesitate to accept. O’Brian had long admired the German doctor-missionary-theologian-musician, and within two weeks he arrived at Dr. Schweitzer’s remote hospital complex in Africa. During his visit, O’Brian spent his days assisting the volunteers in the hospital and his nights with Dr. Schweitzer discussing global peace and world politics. During their discussions, Dr. Schweitzer told O’Brian that he felt “The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves,” which O’Brian would never forget.

After an inspiring nine days, O’Brian prepared to return to America. Before saying goodbye, Dr. Schweitzer took O’Brian’s hand and asked, “Hugh, what are you going to do with this?” It was these words combined with his unforgettable visit that compelled Hugh O'Brian to form Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY). Two weeks after returning from his 1958 visit to Africa, O’Brian put together a prototype seminar for young leaders.

From 1958 to 1967, leadership seminars took place in Los Angeles for sophomores from California. In 1968 the scope of the HOBY program grew to include national and international participants which led to the expanded eight-day global leadership seminar called the World Leadership Congress (WLC) held annually. In an effort to include more students nationwide, three-day and four-day HOBY Leadership Seminars were instituted in 1977 in which high schools throughout the country may nominate a sophomore to attend a HOBY seminar in their state.

Five decades later, HOBY is still inspiring young people all over the world to develop their leadership and critical-thinking skills to achieve their highest potential. Currently, more than 10,000 tenth graders, representing almost as many high schools nationwide, attend HOBY Leadership Seminars each year. These seminars are run by over 4,000 volunteers with community leaders, business executives, educators, and parents involved in every seminar. Each seminar strives to follow the HOBY motto of teaching students, “how to think, not what to think,” thus ensuring that Dr. Schweitzer’s hope for young people lives on.

Hugh O’Brian: Visionary, Legendary Humanitarian

Hugh O’Brian was born April 19,

1925 in Rochester, New York. At 17, he became the youngest drill instructor in Marine Corps history, but found his true passion was acting. O’Brian gained national fame and notoriety with his portrayal of frontier lawman Wyatt Earp in “The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp.” This top-rated television series ran from 1955-1962 and made O’Brian an overnight success. After the series ended, O’Brian went on to other acting projects in film, television, and Broadway while devoting the rest of his time to HOBY.

The honors and awards he has received from his work with HOBY are numerous. In 1983, the National Society of Fund Raising Executives honored him with their premier award for overall philanthropic excellence as a volunteer, fundraiser and philanthropist. This is the only time one individual has received the award in all three categories. In 1989, he received the 60th Annual American Education Award presented by the American Association of School Administrators. O'Brian joins Norman Rockwell, Lyndon Johnson, Helen Keller, Walt Disney, and Bob Hope as a recipient of this most significant award. Mr. O’Brian died on September 5, 2016 at the age of 91.

THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE Unfortunately, a very small number of our young people seem to attract most of the news. They are in the public eye because they have stolen cars, vandalized schools, created disturbances – in some way rebelled against society. These headline-makers represent only a small part of our teenage population. It is a fact that 98.7 percent of our young people are law-abiding, constructive citizens. There is too much focus on the negative. It is time we accent the positive – pat the good guys and gals on the back – let them know there are rewards for being responsible members of the community.

I do NOT believe we are all born equal – CREATED equal in the eyes of God, YES – but physical and emotional differences, parental guidance, varying environments, being in the right place at the right time, all play a role in enhancing or limiting an individual’s development. But I DO believe every man and woman, if given the opportunity and encouragement to recognize his or her own potential, regardless of background has the Freedom To Choose in our world. Will an individual be a taker or a giver in life? Will that person be satisfied merely to exist, or seek a meaningful purpose? Will he or she dare to dream the impossible dream?

I believe every person is created as the steward of his or her own destiny with great power for a specific purpose to share with others, through service, a reverence for life in a spirit of love.
