The Elm Grove School for Lifelong Learning (EGS4LL) is dedicated to enriching the lives of others. Our mission is to create a nurturing environment in a classroom atmosphere for adults in the immediate and surrounding communities of the school. Our vision is to operate a program of classes that will promote education, conversation, and socialization in our communities.

The school is grateful for the generosity of our committee members, volunteers, and presenters, as well as our supporting church staff, all of whom have helped us to get our program started and also help us to make the school run smoothly. Welcome, participants! You make it happen; thank you!

Welcome to Our School! Elm Grove School for Lifelong Learning (EGS4LL) continues its third year this fall as we look forward to having you join us in our classes. EGS4LL is a self-supporting, non-profit organization and outreach of Community United Methodist Church (CUMC). The school is dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults by providing an opportunity for educational learning and social interaction. The school is staffed, and classes are taught, by a group of dedicated volunteers.

There are plenty of classes offered in our school, including a wide range of topics such as Travel, History, Crafts, Music Appreciation, Games, Opera, Science, Health, Senior Living, Computer Applications, Movies, Religion, Literature, and Sewing!

We invite you to become a new EGS4LL Member or renew your membership now for a low fee of $10. To join or renew, just check the box on the registration form and enclose your fee with your class selections. Our 2019 membership year runs for the current school year and covers both the Summer and Fall sessions. You may register now for the Fall, but if you have already registered this summer, you don’t need to do it again. Membership is optional. If you do not wish to join, just pay the higher prices indicated for the classes in the schedule. Membership each year entitles you to …. ❖ a lower price on all our classes; ❖ a periodic electronic school newsletter with info on special topics; ❖ early online access to the catalog via your email; ❖ invitations to special events or previews; & free classes! ❖ Free classes require a membership. ❖ You will receive your Membership number when you first join.. ❖ ID tags are issued and required by the school for security reasons.

Some classes may have fees separate from the cost of the course itself. The teachers request these fees to cover their costs in providing materials to the participants. There may also be deadlines for some courses for you to provide pictures or samples to the teachers. Please be sure to include a separate check for these fees and pay careful attention to the requirements for these courses so you can enjoy them the most.

#401 International News That Impacts the USA Cost: $24/$30 3 Classes—Note the Dates Presenter: Frank Loh Dates: Wed., Sep 11, Oct 2, Nov 6 Time: 9 am – 10 am Disciple Room 229 In this course, we will be interpreting current international news that impact the USA both economically and politically. We will take a broad look at many countries, including those wo always think about, such as China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as others. FRANK LOH is a business instructor who has lectured at WCTC, Concordia University, Upper Iowa University, and Ottawa University. #402 Chinese Mahjong (Sichuan-style) Cost: $48/$60 6 Classes Facilitator: Heather Hein Dates: Wed., Sep 11 – Oct 16 Time: 9 am – 11:30 am Hearth Room 201 Mahjong is a popular tile-based Chinese gambling game, similar to the card game Rummy, played by four people. Every district in China has its own version of Mahjong and Sichuan-style is the simplest. It’s a great way for beginners to be introduced to the game and don’t worry—we’ll play for fun, not money! HEATHER HEIN was very fortunate to have lived in Shanghai for 3 years with her husband and daughters when their family relocated to China for her husband’s work. While there, Chinese friends taught her several different versions of Mahjong which she would like to share with you #403 Tourist Trains of Wisconsin, the US, and Beyond Cost: $32/$40 4 Classes- Wed and Fri Your Conductors: Chuck Gevaert & Jim Schaefer Dates: Sep.11-13, & Sep 25 -27 Time: 9 am – 11 am Highland Room 229 This class will meet in different rooms—check your schedule when you attend. The class will focus on many tourist trains, depots, museums, and train spotting sites across the country. It will concentrate primarily on the Midwest but also the railroads of other regions as well—especially in CO, CA, AZ, WV and others out east.

CHUCK GEVAERT and JIM SCHAEFER are both retired educators, Chuck at Waukesha and Jim at Arrowhead. Both have been avid train watchers and riders for a long time and wish to share their enthusiasm of the rails with you. Presently, they are very active in Learning in Retirement (LIR) of Waukesha Country, and both love to travel extensively, especially by rail. #404 It’s a Wonderful Life (Magazine) Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: David Stephan Date: Wed., Sep 11 Time: 10:30 am – 11:30 am Disciple Room 229 This course will include the history of America’s iconic magazine, Life Magazine, and include a discussion of some of their most famous photos and their back stories. DAVID STEPHAN has always had a passion for historical photos. Now that he is retired, he can often be found looking for them at rummage and estate sales. #405 Gardening for Life Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenters: Liz Burke and Marilynn Cech Date: Wed., Sep 11 Time: 12 pm – 1:30 pm Disciple Room 229 Gardening for Life stresses the educational aspects of the Lifelong Gardening Committee, whose purpose is to educate the public about the tools, techniques, and plant selection which will allow you to garden throughout your life, despite physical challenges, whether you are young in age or just young at heart. Marilynn and Liz will do a presentation which will cover tips and techniques for gardening with ease, while protecting your joints, preventing injuries, and enhancing your wellbeing. LIZ BURKE has been a Master Gardener since 2012 and a member of the Lifelong Gardening Committee since 2014. Her gardening passion is roses! MARILYNN CECH has been a Southeast Wisconsin Master Gardener since 2006 and on the Lifelong Gardening Committee since 2011.

#406 Writing the Stories of Your Life Cost: $32/$40 4 Classes Presenter: Angela Otts Dates: Wed., Sep 11 – Oct 2 Time: 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm Highland Room 233 Document the stories of your life for your children and grandchildren. Some may be funny and frivolous and some may be historic or educational. Learn how to organize and write your stories. They will always be a remembrance of you and what you have experienced. The classes will include a complete outline of how to go about your story project which can be a marvelous gift for your family. ANGELA OTTS is an award-winning columnist and feature writer. She is an instructor in programs for seniors in Alabama and has been a writer for over 40 years.

#407 Introduction to Mah Jongg Cost: $48/$60 6 Classes Presenters: Patty Johnson, Mary Mazurek, Diane Kocs Dates: Fri., Sep 13 – Oct 18 Time: 9 am – 11 am Disciple Room 229 In this class, you will learn the basics of playing Mah Jongg. This ancient game is played using the rules established by the National Mah Jongg League. It is a fun, enjoyable pastime that you can master by learning the principles and then playing the

game. The first class will be an introduction to the tiles, racks, and cards. In weeks 2 – 6, we will be playing the game. There is something new to learn in every session. There will be up to three instructors (see list above) for this class, with one instructor assigned to each table of four players. Among the teachers, we have had many years of experience playing the game with each other and in groups. We believe you learn by playing the game and invite you to join us for some fun.

#408 Introduction to the Pennywhistle Cost: $32/$40 4 Classes—Whistle Fee ($10, Key of D) Presenter: Ron Kral Dates: Fri., Sep 13 – Oct 4 Time: 9 am – 10:30 am Highland Room 233 This course will introduce the six-hole penny/tin/Irish whistle and guide the participants in the basics of playing it. They will learn a number of songs and resources to find many more. Students may purchase a whistle from the instructor at the first class ($10). REV. RON KRAL bought his first Pennywhistle in 1999 and has enjoyed playing it ever since. He has been part of the Finian McCoy Band since 2003 where he plays the whistle, Irish flute, mandolin, and bouzouki.

#409 Watercolor Painting Demonstration Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: Thomas Mulhaney Date: Fri., Sep 13 Time: 11:30 am – 1:30 pm Revelation Room 230 This is a show-and-tell class to get your started. Tom will talk about watercolor painting, including all the supplies and techniques, and will complete a painting in two hours of class time. He will explain as he goes along what he is doing and the various options you have for the various steps. He will answer questions you might have while he paints. TOM MULHANEY has done watercolor painting for 40 years and is self-taught. He has instructed at WCTC for 3 years and taught at Brookfield Senor Center for 21 years. #410 Sew a Quilted Tote Bag Cost: $32/$40 4 Classes—Craft Fee: $30 Facilitators: Bonnie Klamik and Judy Giljohann Dates: Fri., Sep 13 – Oct 4 Time: 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm Disciple Room 229 In this class, we will guide you through the steps to sew a large quilted tote bag. A kit including fabric for piecing the outside and for the limning and handles and batting will be provided to you at the first class. You will need to bring a sewing machine to the class. Basic quilting supplies, such as a rotary cutter, mat, ruler, and sewing supplies, will be helpful. BONNIE KLAMIK and JUDY GILJOHANN together have 30 years of quilting experience. Over the years, they have advance3d their skills through classes at WCTC and local quilt shops. They would love to share their passion for this fun hobby with you. #411 The Spirituals and the Blues (Book by James Cone) Cost: $40/$50 5 Classes—Please buy and read the book Facilitator: Mark Hilgendorf, Ph.D. Dates: Fri., Sep 13 – Oct 11 Time: 11 am – 12:30 pm Highland Room 233 Using James Cone’s book, we will look at the depth of the faith that African Americans had during slavery to help them survive in a world that they did not create. MARK HILGENDORF received his PhD from Duke University and has taught religion and history for 35 years at Milton Academy in Boston.

#412 Introduction to Ikebana and Workshop Cost: $8/$10 1 Class—Craft Fee: $35 Presenter: Laurie Wareham Date: Wed., Sep 18 Time: 9:30 am – 12 pm Disciple Room 229 Friendship through Flowers is the motto for Ikebana. What is Ikebana? Laurie will give a short keynote presentation to introduce the history of Ikebana. Plus, there will be a workshop where you create one arrangement. This workshop includes all supplies such as container, kenzan (metal round disc with metal spokes to hold the flower), the arrangement flowers, and handouts. You should bring a pair of good scissors and a towel for the workshop. Please note: the cost of flowers is at wholesale to you; this arrangement is valued at $75 or more. LAURIE WAREHAM is a certified Ichiyo Instructor and Junior Master of the Ichiyo School of Ikebana. She is President Elect of the Ikebana International (Tokyo, Japan, Chapter #22, which is located in Milwaukee. #413 Getting Over the Sticker Shock of Senior Living Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: Liz Eaton Dates: Wed: Sep 18 Time: 10:30 am – 11:30 am Highland Room 233 Find out what senior living costs and the options available to you. Make sure you are in a position to make the most informed decision about your future. LIZ EATON, from Luther Manor, helps seniors and their families understand their options when it comes to senior living accommodations and the cost associated with it #414 Gold Star Mothers and Widows Pilgrimages of the 1930s Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: Dr. Peter H. Jacobsohn Dates: Wed: Sep 18 Time: 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm Disciple Room 229 In this class, there will be a discussion of the government-sponsored mothers’ and widows’ pilgrimages of the 1930s to the graves in Europe of their WWI fallen loved ones. The class will be a PowerPoint presentation and will also include time for you to examine an exhibit of memorabilia. DR. PETER H. JACOBSOHN is professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Marquette University School of Dentistry. He is curator of the Marquette University Dental and Medical Museum. He collects historical artifacts and exhibits them at his presentations.

#415 Beginning Level Crochet Cost: $32/$40 4 Classes—Craft Fee $5 Presenter: Maryagnes Kuehmichel Date: Wed., Sep 25 – Oct 16 Time: 10:30 am – 12 pm Highland Room 233 In this class, Maryagnes will teach you how to crochet by making a chain reversing it to increase. We’ll also learn how to make circles instead of squares. A supply of needles and yarn will be provided along with the instruction. MARYAGNES KUEHMICHEL has been an Elm Grove resident for 15 years. She is a retired school nurse and Air Force veteran who loves to cook, travel, read, and just enjoy life! #416 Fall Risk Prevention Cost: $8/$12 1 Class Presenter: Christine Denton Date: Fri, Sep 25 Time: 11:30 am – 1 pm Disciple Room 229 During this presentation, we will talk about how one’s balance system works and how it changes with age. In addition, we will talk about strategies to decrease the risk of falls by examining environmental hazards, unsafe equipment and footwear, as well as discuss techniques for improving your balance and safety. CHRISTINE DENTON is a senior professional with over 30 years of experience in the field and a background in occupational therapy. #417 Moving in the Right Direction: Senior’s Guide to Downsizing Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: Bruce Nemovitz Date: Wed., Sep 25 Time: 12 pm – 1:30 pm Highland Room 229 In this class, you will learn how to (1) address and overcome the challenges of finding the right housing; (2) the process of selling and downsizing; as well as (3) how to handle the challenges of procrastination and fear which hold us back from a making a positive move. BRUCE NEMOVITZ is the author of two books relating to the challenge of moving from one’s longtime home. Specializing in senior real estate sales over 35 years, he’s won awards from his peers and helped over 3,000 families make the transitions required in moving to a new place.

#418 General Trivia Team Competition Cost: Free* 1 Class- *Members only Presenters: Ray and Goldie Jones Date: Wed., Sep 25 Time: 1:30 – 3 pm Fellowship Hall Participate for fun in a competition with 10 multiple choice questions per round, 5 rounds total. Prizes will be awarded for winners, to be determined by number of participants. GOLDIE AND RAY JONES are both retired elementary educators in the Franklin, Indiana public schools. Goldie taught 37 years in K-4 grades, while Ray was teacher, principal, and district-wide technology director for a 46-year career. They retired in 2008 and moved to their home in Dickson Hollow in 2016. They have been active in teacher organizations and as volunteers since retirement.

#419 Book: The Color of Law: A Forgotten History Cost: $48/$60 8 Classes of How Our Government Segregated America (Rothstein) Presenter: Marsha Thrall Dates: Fri, Sep 27 – Nov 15 Time: 1 pm – 2:30 pm Revelation Room 230 In a December 2018 report, the Brookings Center ranked the greater Milwaukee area as the “most segregated metro-area” based on a multi-year (2013-2017) survey by American Community Survey. How did we get here? We will begin exploring the roots of this problem through an engaged reading and seminar-style discussion of Richard Rothstein’s book entitled above. MARSHA THRALL is the Religious Education Coordinator of Unitarian Universalist Church-West in Brookfield, WI. She is currently a Ph.D. student in Religion, Ethics, and Culture at Chicago Theological Seminary. #420 High-Speed Tour through Russia Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: David Irwin Date: Fri., Sep 27 Time: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm Revelation Room 230 This class makes its way through 200 years of Russian history as seen from Moscow and St. Petersburg, where David spent part of this past winter. The format is conversational and interactive. DAVID IRWIN is a business person and widely-traveled students of the world. He earned an AB in Economics at Dartmouth and his MBA at the Wharton School.

Join this class to learn more about HOW this monumental, ecumenical masterpiece came into being, and WHY it took more than

15 years for the word-class team of calligraphers, artists, and theologians to complete. View fine art reproduction books and prints and see how modern day themes and historic events were incorporated into artwork as a means of igniting spiritual imagination and bringing the Bible to life in the 21st century. In one of her many retirement pursuits, MISSY CREEVY was a specialty marketing representative for Liturgical Press, and sold Saint John’s Bible art, books, and cards for church fundraising.

#422 Dealing with Death: The Exchange of Gifts in Hospice (Book) Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter/Author: Catherine Labinski Date: Fri., Oct 4 Time: 9 am – 10:30 am Revelation Room 230 Catherine shares stories of her work and encouragement in a hospice setting from her book. She speaks about the life-affirming moments she has had with the dying and how meeting their needs can bring much joy and satisfaction. This class also provides a forum for questions and answers so that participants who may be dealing with death and dying situations can share and benefit from the class. CATHERINE LABINSKI brings over fifteen years of experience as a hospice chaplain with her to this class. She is the author of the book which is the subject of the class and will bring along copies of it with her

DARLENE ROSE, MS, is a retired speech pathologist, with special training in stroke, degenerative disease, and cognition. She is a former Mrs. Wisconsin, a published poet, a cancer survivor, and public speaker.

#425 Challenges Facing Youth in Rural Africa Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: Art Wigchers Date: Wed., Oct 9 Time: 10:30 am – 11:30 am Disciple Room 229 Art returns to update us on the challenges facing youth in the rural areas of Africa. Over 2/3 of the children live in rural areas. Learn what we can do to help young girls and boys reach their potential here. ART WIGCHERS has traveled extensively in the last 15 years to Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. He has observed numerous projects funded by USAAID and other donors.. #426 Got Clutter? Making Wise Choices as you Downsize Cost: $8/$10 1 Class Presenter: Dawn Eyre Date: Wed., Oct 9 Time: 12 pm – 1 pm Disciple Room 229 Got clutter? Take heart! This class has the information you need on how to determine what you can do with all that clutter you’ve accumulated over the years. DAWN EYRE is the owner of Segues since 2004. She has a background in business and social work.

#427 Survey of English Poetry – Part 1 Cost: $48/$60 6 Classes Presenter: Ralph Bielenberg Date: Fri., Oct 11 – Nov 15 Time: 9 am – 11 am Revelation Room 230 In this class, we will take a brief but intimate look at twelve major English poets, representing periods from 500 AD to 1900. Become familiar with various types of poetry and poetic terminology and revisit some favorite poets. She found herself running a clinic, making sandwiches, translating legal documents, and confirming plane reservations Peggy will describe her experiences and discuss what she learned and witnessed in the refugee shelter. How did the brewing process, packaging, and sales change from the time of early settlement through the 1930s? How did the industry survive the years of Prohibition? DAVE FEHLAUER is a former educator and school administrator. The mansion is transformed for the Christmas season, so we will take a peek. Woodstock was a music festival held between August 15–18, 1969, which attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music", it was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, 43 miles southwest of Woodstock. Over the sometimes rainy weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors. It is widely regarded

as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation. Rolling Stone listed it as number 19 of the 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll. This class features the only documentary and live performance film of the entire festival. We’ll look at how the festival was organized, the lifestyle of the times as depicted by those who attended, and a good sample of the live acts done throughout this three-day festival. OWLS is an organization formed in 2005 by members of Community United Methodist Church (CUMC) in Elm Grove. Our purpose is to serve older members of the congregation and the surrounding community. We provide friendship and fellowship to all of our members through entertainment, fun, inspiration, adventure, and service to the community. We’d love to have you as a member. EGS4LL Policies

Schedule: The Elm Grove School for Lifelong Learning (EGS4LL) operates for two

sessions during each year – Summer Session (one six-week term) and Fall Session (one ten-week term). The Summer Session begins in July (after July 4th) and ends in mid-August. The Fall Session begins in mid-September and runs to mid-November. There are separate catalogs for these two sessions.

Classrooms: There are three classrooms in use for the school. Two of these

classrooms have an exterior door so that access is possible directly from the parking lot. Highland Room, 233, has a ramp and door entrance at street level. Disciple Room, 229, has an exterior door entrance at street level. Revelation Room 230 is accessible inside the building. Follow the signs inside the church.

EGS Membership: The school offers an optional annual membership option for a low

$10 fee. Membership entitles you to enjoy the lower prices for classes quoted in this catalog and you are placed on an early mailing and email list.

Registration: Register for classes by mail by filling out the registration forms in the

catalog and mailing them to us with the information requested. Make a copy of your form and mail it with your fees to: CUMC-EGS4LL, 14700 Watertown Plank Road, Elm Grove, WI 53122. Registration is based on the date the forms are received. Maximum enrollment for any class is around 25 people, sometimes less. Classes may fill quickly; so please register early.

Cancellation/ Refunds: Refunds are issued only if a class is cancelled. Some classes

may be cancelled if enrollment is low, so it is best if you register early for classes you like to help assure the class can be taught. Classes may be cancelled for inclement weather. Absences from classes will not be refunded, including brief illnesses, conflicts, or moving out of the area. Refund policy will be strictly enforced. Please choose your classes carefully. Contact staff if you have questions or needs.

Weather: In general, the school will follow the guidelines for the Elmbrook School

District for inclement weather. You should hear the announcement on radio or see it on TV. If a class is held only one session, a cancellation will result in a refund. If an alternate date or multiple sessions are held, we will try to include missed content in the other or later sessions. Also, call or check your email.

Parking: Parking is FREE and available in the CUMC Parking Lot, which you can

access via Watertown Plank Road and/or the Madera Circle. There is limited parking on the west side of the church off Highland Drive. NO PARKING is permitted on Highland Drive itself. The posted speed limit is 25 mph in town.
