1.1 ThePromotionofInnovationandExcellenceinLearningandTeachingatCurtin
CurtinlearningandteachinggrantprogrammesaimtoprovidefundingtosupportCurtinstaffindevelopmentactivitiesandcapacity-buildingapproachesthatfosterexcellenceandScholarshipofLearningandTeaching.ThesegrantssupportallacademicsrolesandarealignedwithCurtin’sLearningandStudentExperienceStrategicPlan2018-2020.ThegrantssupportCurtin’svisionfor2020:topositionCurtinontheinternationalstageasaleaderintheprovisionofqualityteachingandresearch,andtoeffectchangeandmakearealdifference.
Outcomesoftheprojects/activitiesareexpectedtoleadtoapositiveimpactonthestudentexperienceandlearningoutcomes,andinmanycasesareexpectedtoformthebasisoffutureapplicationstoexternalfundingbodies,suchastheAustralianCouncilofEducationalResearch(ACER).
1.2 BroadaimsandprinciplesCurtinGrantsaredesignedtosupportdevelopmentactivitiesandcapacity-buildingapproachesthatfosterinnovation,excellenceandscholarshipinlearningandteaching.
InnovationandScholarshipofLearningandTeaching(iSoLT)meansthedevelopmentandimplementationofinnovativeapproachestolearningandteaching(teachingdeliveryandteachingrelatedduties)attheUniversity,andsystematicevidence-basedscholarlyenquiryintolearningandteaching.(CurtinUniversityAcademic,ProfessionalandGeneralStaffAgreement,2017–seesection21.3http://ebastaff.curtin.edu.au)
CurtinGrantprojects:
• aresituatedwithintheoryandcurrentliterature,• requireasystematicapproachtothecollection,analysisandinterpretationofdata,and• resultindocumentedoutcomessubjectedtopeerreview.
CurtinGrantsalsosupporteducationalresearchthatcontributestotheoreticaldebatesanddevelopmentinthefieldofeducationalresearch(alsocalleddiscipline-basededucationresearch)focussesonresearchquestionsrelatedtohowstudentslearnaspecificdiscipline,andinterventionstoenhancestudentlearning.Thisresearchisbroadlyapplicablebeyondasinglecourse.
ThefollowingprinciplesunderpintheCurtinLearningandTeachingGrantsScheme:
Principle1:FundedgrantschemeswillalignwithCurtin’sStrategicPlanandkeyinstitutionalstrategiclearningandteachingprojects.
Principle2:EachgrantschemewillbeinclusiveandequitableforallCurtinteachingstaff.
Principle3:Thegrantschemes’applicationprocessesandreportingrequirementswillbemanageableforclaimantsandthoseprocessingapplications.
Principle4:Thegrantschemeswillbesubjecttoannualevaluationandreviewtoensuretheschemesremainfit-for-purpose.
CurtinLearningandTeachingGrantsareoverseenandfundedbytheDVCAcademicandmanagedbyCurtinLearningandTeaching.ProgressisreportedtoAcademicBoardviatheULTCsub-committee.

1.3TheCurtinLearningandTeachingGrantsScheme(CurtinGrantsScheme)TheCurtinGrantsSchemeofferstwotypesofgrants:
1. SeedGrantswhichprovidetheopportunityforstaffinTeachingAcademicappointmentstobuildtheirprofileiniSoLT.ThesegrantswerepreviouslycalledtheTeachingAcademicScholarshipSeed(TASS)grants.
2. InnovationGrantsforallacademicstaffwhoareinvolvedinteachingatCurtin(TeachingAcademics,TeachingandResearchAcademics).ThisfundingprogrammewaspreviouslycalledtheTeachingExcellenceDevelopmentFund(TEDF).
1.3.1 SeedGrants
SeedGrantssupportpilotprojectswhichtestandevaluateanoriginalidea,orstand-alone,small-scaleproject,orprojectswhichbuildthecapacityofTeachingAcademics.ApplicationsshouldaddressoneoftheStrategicPriorities.Themaximumdurationoftheseedprojectsisoneyear.
Funding:Fivegrantsof$10,000eachareavailable
1.3.2 InnovationGrants
InnovationGrantssupportiSoLTprimarilyrelatedtotheenhancementoflearningandteachingatCurtin.ThesegrantsmayalsobeusedtosupportprojectsthatinvolvepartnershipswithATNinstitutions.Additionally,theUniversityencouragesapplicationsthatworkacrosstheCurtincampuseswhichhelppromote'OneCurtin'thinkingandwaysofworking. ApplicationsshouldaddressatleastoneoftheStrategicPriorities.ApplicationsmaycovermorethanoneStrategicPriority,butapplicantsshouldindicatetheonethatismostalignedtotheirinterests.TheCurtinGrantsSchemeCommitteereservestherighttoreallocateanapplicationifitbelievesitfitsmoreappropriatelyunderadifferenttheme.
ThemaximumdurationoftheInnovationGrantprojectsisoneyear.
Applicationsforfundingareexpectedtoproposesignificantprojectsthathaveasolidevidencebaseandshowawell-developedstrategyforachievingimpact.Asoutlinedabove,applicationsmayinvolveapartnerATNinstitution,orinvolvemorethanoneCurtincampus,butthisisnotobligatory.
AnapplicantmayindicatetheirinterestindevelopingtheirproposalforalargerprojectthatinvolvespartnershipswithATNinstitutions.TheCurtinGrantsSchemeCommitteewillonlyconsidersignificantprojectsthat:haveasolidevidencebase,addressastrategicpriorityandpromptsystemicimpactforCurtinandpartnerATNinstitution(s).
TheCurtinGrantsSchemeCommitteereservestherighttorequestthataproposalbemodifiedand/orresubmittedforadecisionofsuitabilityandmaydecidetofundasignificantgranttoamaximumof$50,000.
Funding:Atotalof$350,000isavailableforindividualsorteachingteamsviaacompetitivebidforfunds.Projectsarelimitedtoamaximumof$25,000fundingunlessthegrantissuitableforfurtherdevelopmentasasignificantprojectand/oraprojectwhichinvolvesanotherATNinstitution.
ThereisonlyonefundingroundeachyearandmoneywillbecommittedattheendofNovember2018.

1.3 Eligibility
1.4.1 SeedGrants
SeedGrantsareonlyavailabletoindividualsorteams,eachofwhomisemployedinaTeachingAcademicroleandwhohasanappointmentofatleast0.5full-timeequivalent.Theappointmentmustbeforatleastatwo-yearterm(aprovisionforexceptionalcircumstancesmaybeconsidered).
1.4.2 InnovationGrants
InnovationGrantsareavailableforallacademicstaffwhoareinvolvedinteachingatCurtin(TeachingAcademics,TeachingandResearchAcademicsatallCurtincampuses).
Individualsorteams:Full-time,part-timeandsessionalacademicstaffwhoareactivelyinvolvedinlearningandteachingrelatedactivitiesareeligibletoapplyforthisGrant.Theprojectleadshouldholdanappointmentofatleast0.5full-timeequivalent.Theappointmentmustbeforatleastatwoyearterm(aprovisionforexceptionalcircumstancesmaybeconsidered).
BothGrantsarehighlycompetitiveandsuccessfulapplicationswillbeselectedonmeritaccordingtothefollowingcriteria:
• Relevancetostrategicpriorities
• Academicmeritandclarityoftheproposal
• Systematicvalidapproachofinquiry
• Impact,transferabilityandsustainability
• Budgetsustainability

1.4 GrantApplicantResponsibilityAllGrantapplicantsshoulddiscusswiththeirHeadofSchoolorDepartmentwherethereareworkloadimplicationsofproposedactivitiesorprojectstoensurethattheyhavesupportfortheapplication.
ApplicantsmayonlybetheLeadononefundedproject,butmayparticipateinotherfundedprojectssubjecttotheirworkloadconsiderations.ApplicantsarenotabletoreceivefundingfromtheSeedandInnovationGrantforthesameproject.
AlldisbursementoffundstocostcentreswilloccurinJanuary2019.Itisanexpectationthatallrecipientsof2019fundswilldisseminateandpublishtheirprojectfindingsandoutcomeswithintheUniversitycommunityandmorebroadlywhereverifpossible(see1.14).
1.5 StrategicPrioritiesfor2019AllCurtinLearningandTeachingGrantsSchemeapplicationsshouldbedirectedtooneofthefollowingstrategicprioritiesandshoulddescribehowtheywillhaveahighimpactoncoursesandunits.TheCurtinLearningandTeachingGrantsschemeprioritiesare:Effectiveandefficientassessmentapproachesthatsupportandevidencestudentachievementofemployabilitycapabilities

• Improvingfeedbackthatpromotesstudentlearninganddevelopsself-regulatinglearnersthatmanagetheirownlearningandcareersanddrawsfromavarietyofsources(egpeer/industry/teachingstaff);
• Effectivenessandefficiencyofassessmentsaimedataddressingassessmentrelatedworkloadforstudentsandstaff;
• Reducedrelianceonexaminations,andreplacinginappropriateuseofexamswithcourse/industry/workrelatedformsofassessment.
• Developingassessmentliteracystrategiesfordisciplineteachingteams.DevelopmentofMOOCsthatmodelopendesignprinciplesandincorporateformalandinformallearningapproaches
• MOOCsthathavedirectandexplicitconnectionstoCurtincoursesandcanpathwayfromastand-alonecredentialtoaCurtindegreeprogram;

1.6 PartnershipswithATNuniversitiesWhereanInnovationGrantincludesapartnershipwithanATNUniversity,partnersmustbeemployeesofthatUniversity(QUT,RMIT,UniSA,andUTS).Inthegrantapplication,theapplicantshouldclearlyidentify:
• therolesandresponsibilitiesofproposedprojectteammembers.Adiagrammaticdepictionofprojectgovernanceisencouraged.
• demonstratedcapability(skillsandexperience)andcapacity(time)oftheprojectteamtodeliverontheproposedscaleandscopeoftheproject(NB:thequalityandtimelinessoftheprojectleader’spreviousworkwillbetakenintoaccountwhenconsideringapplicationsforfunding).
WhereaprojectincludesanATNpartner,CurtinmustundertaketheleadontheprojectandmustensureeachnamedcollaboratingATNinstitutionhasagreedtohaveitsnameputforwardasacollaboratinginstitutionbeforesubmittingaprojectproposal.Formalpartnershipsmustbeacknowledgedindocumentationregardingtheproject.Collaboratinguniversitieswillcontributesubstantiallytotheproject,usuallythroughaprojectteammember.Toacknowledgethiscommitment,projectproposalsmustbeendorsedinwritingbywayofaletterofendorsementfromtheDVCAcademicorequivalent,ofthepartnerinstitutionsbeforesubmission.

1.7 ObligationsassociatedwithreceivingagrantThereareanumberofobligationsassociatedwithreceivingagrant.Applicantsshouldbefamiliarwiththeobligationsofgrantholderswhenconsideringapplyingforagrantandinthedesignoftheirgrantproposal.DetailsoftheseareprovidedatAppendix3.

Impactisthedifferencethataprojectmakesinitssphereofinfluence,bothduringandafterthefundingperiod.Maximisingimpactrequiresforecastingandplanning.Thequestionsandmatrixbelowprovideastructuretopromptactiveandongoingconsiderationandre-evaluationofimpactandhowitmaybemaximisedgiventheevolutionoftheproject.Maintainingupdatedresponsestothetemplateisnotintendedtobeareportingrequirement,ratherastrategicsteeringtoolfortheproject.Theresponsestothequestionsbelow,includinginputtothematrix,areexpectedtochangeoverthelifeoftheproject,astheworkandresultsprogress.CurtinLearningandTeachingwillbeinterestedindiscussingevolvingprojectionsofimpactatkeypointsduringtheproject,includingatprogressandfinalreportingpoints.
