2019 CONFERENCE THEME
WELCOME FROM THE ALGIM CE
ALGIM is continuing to support councils to digitally transform their organisations and communities with the 2019 ALGIM annual Conference. Our Annual Conference this year is themed around “Going Smart: A World of Opportunities” very fitting for councils digitally transforming.
We are delighted to have Dr Jordan Nguyen, a world-renowned digital innovator and producer of documentaries for Discovery Channel, ABC and National Geographic, who will open the event in Wellington on November 4th.
Mike Manson, CE ALGIM
Smart cities is a big topic whether you are a city, district or region, and to show case the topic we have invited Adam Beck, Executive Director of the Smart Cities Council to address us on innovative case studies. IoT is also a hot topic so we will be exploring this with the chair of the IoT Alliance of Australia, Catherine Caruana- McManus.
I personally want our members to see the innovation coming out of Deakin University, which received a 92% uptake of its digital assistant Genie. So, we invited them to showcase this with a view to how it could be used within local government.
The programme is full of opportunities to learn more about 5G, ALGIM’s Cybersecurity Programme, government initiatives, cloud, data governance, IT security, innovation and collaboration across the sector.
To finish is someone who has taken up those opportunities and founded Rocket Lab, worked for Virgin Gatalic, and is now with Kea Aerospace. Mark Rocket will show how a smart Kiwi can really fly. I wish to thank the many councils involved in the organising committee to make the Annual Conference a truly local government event. We hope to see you there.
41 sessions over three days

DAY ONE 4TH NOVEMBER 2019
Introducing
Petra Bagust ALGIM Annual Conference MC
We are racing into the heart of the 4th Industrial Revolution and as we grapple with this growing changing cyber landscape, I believe relationship, smart processes and a willingness to learn are keys to our success. I count it a privilege to be part of this coming together; discussing and planning for that future.
When I reflect on working with ALGIM and all of you for the first time 4 years ago, I recall blown away by how much aroha was in the room - people passionate about their people and the business of doing council, community and life well. As well as meeting the growing challenge to do it better, bigger and faster. These are real challenges and we can’t face them alone - so its excellent to get together again for an injection of information, inspiration and practical solutions.
It’s a pleasure to be back at ALGIM Annual Conference 2019 ready to launch into 41 sessions of goodness dedicated to Local Government Information Management over the next 3 days! I’m ready to guide us through some seriously smart speakers, plenty of opportunities to connect, eat and drink, and of course to keep everything running on time. This is time well spent whānau let’s make the most of it!

DATA GOVERNANCE: CONCEPTS TO IMPLEMENTATION
Manisha Joshi, Head of Enterprise Data, Environment Canterbury
Data Governance is often acknowledged as one of the foundational cornerstones for the data outcomes. Still, a lot of organisations struggle with getting started on a practical level.
This is Environment Canterbury’s story of exploring and converting concepts to a practical working data governance framework.
Like any story, it has its share of ups and downs, I would love to share these to help others on the similar journey. More importantly, you will have a better understanding of characters that are involved in writing a data governance story. Come and have a listen.

WANT A KICK ASS EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE?
Jason Poyner, Founder & CEO, Deptive
What is a company without its people? If you are part of a great company, look around and I’m sure you are surrounded by great people. Since people are so important, as leaders, what we are doing to create an environment where employees actually want to show up for work? A place where people are proud to tell friends where they work, even want to show friends around and tell them about the organisation. In other words, what are we doing to create an awesome employee experience?
In this session, the audience will learn about the three key pillars of employee experience (culture, physical spaces, and technology), the impact of improved employee experience, and steps to take to transform the experience of the technology pillar. If you are passionate about providing your people with technology experiences that wow, then this session is for you.
