Jim Williams, AWWA RepresentativePresident-Elect (2018–2019)American Water Works Association
ark your calendars to attend Illinois Section of American Water Works Association’s WATERCON 2019, Illinois’ largest Total Water Annual Conference! This year’s theme is “We Are Water – It Takes a Team.” Each year, our team of Super Heroes pull off
the best total water conference ever. To keep with our teamwork theme, our keynote speaker will be Thanet Natisri, a self-taught groundwater expert, who lives in Illinois! The Thai military enlisted him to come up with a way to keep water out of the cave during the Cave Rescue in Chiang Rai province, Thailand in June to July of 2018. He will show how it takes true teamwork to reach your goal. You definitely will want to see his presentation on Monday at 1:00!
Come and receive all your CEUs in one event with more training sessions and educational presentations than you can ever imagine. You will have opportunities to network and tap into the knowledge of old friends and meet new ones. Check out the exhibit hall (more than 150 exhibits) and see the latest technology in the water industry. Want to get more involved with our section? Visit the committee booths or pop in to one of their meetings. If you are interested in getting your next license or operator-in-training level, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a water or wastewater refresher course and then take the test while attending our conference. We have a variety of contests consisting of Top Ops, Hydrant Hysteria, Meter Madness, Tapping Competition, and our newest – the Water Tower Contest. Sign up to compete or plan to attend and cheer the contestants on!
Check out our pre-conference program by highlighting your interests. Register to attend, whether it is for one day (Operator’s Day) or for the entire conference. Do not forget to make your hotel reservations early because hotels will sell out!
I look forward to seeing each one of you in Springfield, March 18 through March 21!

WATERCON 2019 | PRE-CONFERENCE PROGRAM & REGISTRATION2
e are pleased to welcome Thanet Natisri, a self-taught groundwater expert. He was enlisted by the Thai military to come up with a way to keep water out of the cave during the Cave Rescue in Chiang Rai province, Thailand in June to July, 2018.
Thanet is a Thai native, who moved to and has lived in America since 2004.He was already working in Thailand at the time the incident took place, helping with a
Groundwater Recharge project with the Department of Local Administration of Thailand to help ensure people would have enough water in the dry season.
Thanet received a call from the Thai military on June 28 saying they needed his expertise for a rescue operation.
In the beginning, he didn’t think it was going to be this big. But later on, it was one of the most difficult water management rescue missions anyone had ever seen.
His job was to coordinate the efforts of civilian, military, and volunteers to control the amount of water in the cave. And to come up with solutions to lower the water level inside the cave and stop water from going in.
Thanet NatisriGroundwater Expert Cave Rescue Chiang Rai Province, ThailandKeynote Speaker Monday, March 18, 2019
Stay tuned for more details about our
other special guests at WATERCON!
ALL SESSIONS earn training credits for Operator Certification renewal and PDH credits.
The team that he coordinated included soldiers, volunteers, a geologist, a hydrologist, engineers, U.S. military rescue personnel, and cave divers from the United Kingdom, as well as Navy SEALS from several countries.
We look forward to hearing Thanet’s story on Monday at the Keynote Session from 1:00–2:00 pm.
